A small camera with vast potential

When you boil it down to the essentials, the Leica Q is basically an impeccable wide-angle Leica lens that just happens to have an amazing, very portable full-frame camera permanently attached — really, an unbeatable value when it comes to Leica products. The Q combines classic and contemporary features in a convenient, compact camera with a simple design that reflects its Leica pedigree.

One incredible lens at the center of it all

Leica paired a 24-megapixel full-frame CMOS sensor — a feature typically only found in larger DSLR cameras — with a premium Summilux 28mm f/1.7 lens in the Q to bring you a unique camera that captures high-quality photos with rich, natural colors and sharp details. Great for street photography, landscapes and architecture, the virtually distortion-free wide angle lens has a bright aperture that gives you dreamy defocused backgrounds. Manual focus and aperture rings on the lens barrel let you emphasize the details you want to highlight and dial in the amount of background defocusing you'd like, while a dedicated macro ring reveals a second distance scale when you turn it, allowing for close-range focus and detailed studies of small subjects. While I doubt you'll take issue with the Q's single focal length, just in case you want to go a bit closer than 28mm, there's a Digital Frame Selector that gives you 35 or 50mm crop modes for added versatility. Raw files maintain the original 28mm focal length while the selected crop is reflected in the JPEG version of the image.

A powerful fusion of digital and mechanical, manual and automatic

The Q's high-speed Maestro II processor gives you high-resolution, low-noise imaging up to ISO 50,000. In continuous shooting mode, it delivers an impressive 12 consecutive frames at a rate of 10 frames per second at full resolution. Super-fast processing enables an equally fast contrast-based autofocus system with face recognition and subject tracking for crisp, accurate focus. A lock button on the focus tab allows for effortless switching between manual and automatic focus. Focus Peaking and Live View Zoom help you achieve sharp manual focus when you want artistic control.

Leica Q laser-engraved details

Laser-engraved lettering, numbers, and dials are easy to read and add to the Q's luxury feel

The Q's manual controls are buttery-smooth, and familiar buttons on the back let you manage settings like ISO and white balance with ease. But if you're more comfortable letting the camera call the shots, there are aperture and shutter priority shooting options and an automatic program mode to fall back on. Or you can go full auto and use one of the Q's preprogrammed scene modes to let the camera choose all the appropriate settings for your situation.

A high-resolution electronic viewfinder seamlessly integrated into the Q's design gives you a bright frame for easy, ergonomic composition and shooting. You can also use the 3" LCD monitor to compose your shots. Activating the optional touchscreen controls allows for touch focusing and shooting on the Q's capacitive touchscreen, or you can keep it old-school, if you prefer.

Smartphone compatibility adds convenience and control

Transfer images from the Q to your phone or tablet for instant sharing using the camera's built-in Wi-Fi or NFC touch pairing. The Leica Q app has a remote control function that lets you set aperture and shutter speed and also triggers the shutter release for self-timer shots, group portraits and shots taken from odd angles.

Features

Overview: The Leica Q (Typ 116) is a full-frame compact camera with unparalleled performance. The camera features built-in Wi-Fi, a high quality prime lens, and comes with a high-capacity rechargeable battery, battery charger, and neck strap.

3" LCD Monitor: The camera has a 3" touch-sensitive, TFT LCD monitor with approximately 1,040,000 pixels. Some functions can be controlled by fingertip gestures (tap, swipe, drag) on the touch-sensitive monitor. There are several monitor displays to choose from, including Upper and Lower Information Lines, Level Gauge, Grid, Clipping, and Histogram.

Viewfinder: In addition to the 3" LCD monitor, the Q has an electronic viewfinder with an LCOS display. The viewfinder has a 4:3 aspect ratio and a resolution of 1280 x 960 pixels x 3 colors, or 3.68MP. The diopter lets you adjust the focus of the viewfinder to your eyesight, and an eye sensor automatically switches between the viewfinder and monitor as you bring the camera up to your eye, or away from it.

Lens: The Q is equipped with Leica Summilux 28mm f/1.7 ASPH lens. With a full-frame (35mm) image sensor, the focal length and angle of view are a true 28mm. The aperture range is f/1.7 to f/16 in 1/3 EV increments. The lens can focus from approximately 11.81" (30cm) to ∞ (infinity). In Macro mode, the cameras focus range is 6.69" to 11.81". The lens features 11 elements in 9 groups, including 3 aspherical surfaces.

Image Sensor: The camera features a full-frame (24mm x 36mm) CMOS image sensor, with 26.3-million total pixels and 24.2 effective pixels. The sensor has a native 3:2 aspect ratio.

Still Image Recording: The Leica Q can record still images in JPEG and DNG (RAW) formats. JPEG images can be recorded in 4 sizes: 24 MP: 6000 x 4000, 12MP: 4272 x 2848, 6MP: 2976 x 1984, and 1.7MP: 1600 x 1080. If desired, you can record a full-resolution DNG (RAW) format, along with the JPEG image.

Digital Frame Selector (Digital Zoom): The camera lets you record photos at two other trimming sizes, corresponding to the images you would get with lenses with focal lengths of 35mm (1.25x) or 50mm (1.8x). When you select one of these trimmed sizes, a frame will appear in the viewfinder or monitor showing you the area of the photo that will be captured. When photos are taken at 35mm or 50mm, the DNG (RAW) image will still remain at the 28mm full frame size.

Still Image Resolution: Still images can be captured at the following resolutions:

Focal Length
28mm 35mm 50mm
24MP 6000 x 4000 15MP 4800 x 3200 8MP 3360 x 2240
12MP 4272 x 2848 8MP 3424 x 2288 4MP 2400 x 1600
6MP 2976 x 1984 4MP 2384 x 1592 2MP 1680 x 1120
1.7MP 1600 x 1080 1.1MP 1280 x 856 0.5MP 896 x 600

Shooting Modes: The power switch, which surrounds the shutter release button, has three settings: Off, S, and C. Setting the camera to S (Single) lets you take individual exposures with each press of the shutter release. If the switch is set to C (Continuous) to take a Picture Series. You can choose frame rates of Low (3 frames per second), Medium (5 fps) or High (10 fps), and picture sizes up to full resolution. The High rate is only available with shutter speeds of 1/60s or faster.

Time Lapse: The camera allows you to observe a motion sequence over a long period of time by taking a time lapse series. You can set a starting time, an interval between photos (1 second to 59:59:59), and the number of photos (up to 9999).

Video Recording: In addition to shooting stills, the Q can record videos in MP4 format. You can choose between Full HD (1920 x 1080) at 60 or 30 fps, or HD (1280 x 720) at 30 fps. Audio is recorded in AAC format using the built-in stereo microphone.

Memory Cards: The Q has a memory card slot that will accept SD, SDHC, or SDXC memory cards, including UHS Speed Class 1 compliant cards.

Wi-Fi: You can share your photos wirelessly via email, Instagram, Facebook, Flickr, and other social media sites through the camera's integrated Wi-Fi function. The Leica Q app connects your camera to your smartphone or tablet, and lets you control the camera remotely and access the images. In an existing Wi-Fi network, you can connect the camera using the Client mode. Using the Host mode, the camera creates its own Wi-Fi network for connecting the camera. The Leica Q app is available for iOS devices running iOS 7.0 or later, and Android phones and tablets operating on Android 4.0 and up. Android devices compatible with NFC (Near-field Communication) can pair with the camera by touching the device to the camera's "N" mark.

Exposure: The Leica Q offers four exposure modes: Automatic Program (P), Aperture Priority (A), Shutter Speed Priority (T), and Manual Exposure (M). You can select the exposure mode by setting the Aperture and Shutter speed dials. Other exposure-related features include:

  • Exposure Compensation: In P, T, and A modes, you can adjust the exposure from +3 to -3 EV in 1/3 EV increments to make the exposure darker or lighter as desired.
  • Automatic Bracketing: Bracketing allows you to take a series of three pictures with graduated exposures. The graduations are produced by changing the shutter speed for the P, A, and M modes, or the aperture for the T mode. You can vary the exposure from +3 to -3 EV in 1/3 EV steps. You can then choose the best picture for your use.
  • Exposure Metering: The camera offers three exposure metering methods: Multi-field Metering (49 zones), Center-weighted Metering, and Spot Metering.
  • White Balance: White balance makes sure the color rendering is natural regardless of the light source. You can choose from the following: Automatic WB, Daylight, Cloudy, Halogen lighting, Shadow, Electronic Flash, two manual settings, and two manual color temperature settings.
  • ISO Sensitivity: The camera can set the ISO speed automatically or manually. With Auto ISO, the sensitivity range and slowest shutter speed can be specified. You can also set the ISO manually between ISO 100 and ISO 50000 in 1 EV increments.

Flash Photography: The Q does not have a built-in flash, but has an accessory shoe for adding an external flash. Flash modes include: Automatic flash, Manual flash, and Automatic flash with slower shutter speeds.

Image Playback: The Leica Q lets you play back still images one at a time, or in an index of 12 or 30 thumbnail images.

Power Requirements: The camera is powered by the Leica BP-DC12 Lithium-ion rechargeable battery (7.2V, 1200mAh). The battery charges in approximately 3 hours 20 minutes using the supplied BC-DC8 battery charger. A fully charged battery has the capacity for approximately 450 exposures.
