V-MODA style and substance meets wireless freedom

When V-MODA stopped by our headquarters with some of their headphones — including the Crossfade Wireless — buzz traveled through the building fast. The good-looking, smooth-sounding 'phones caused such a stir that Senior Advisor Manager Jimmy Baranik rearranged his schedule to make it to a listening session. He liked what he heard so much that we let him take the first trial run with the V-MODA Crossfade Wireless 'phones.

He took them home and paired them with his smartphone easily. "I didn't look at the directions once," he told me, "they were as user-friendly as my iPhone."

V-moda Crossfade Wireless

The V-MODA Crossfade Wireless headphones, shown in Gunmetal, are incredibly durable and come with a heavy-duty "exoskeleton" case for extra protection.

"Sounded like they were wired"

Jimmy, like many skeptical audio enthusiasts and experts, figured wireless convenience would come at the expense of sound quality. But when he fired up some tunes, he heard robust, powerful bass and crystal clear highs. "These bad boys exceeded my expectations," he said.

Whether he placed his phone across the room or in his pocket, the audio never dropped out. As far as music, he put on a little bit of everything and said they sounded better than a lot of wired headphones. On Van Morrison's "Into the Mystic," he said, "the vocals jump out at you...It's a song we've all heard a million times, but through Crossfade Wireless it felt like a new experience." He also noted how well they handled a Fugees track, Lauren Hill's voice came through sweet and beautiful over the tight, solid bass line.

Constructed for comfort and durability

Jimmy was impressed with the rock-solid metal earcup plates and steel headband sliders. V-MODA puts the Crossfade Wireless through a quality and stress assessment that's beyond military standards. While there's no active noise cancellation, these headphones are built to naturally isolate noise — something Jimmy appreciated while he did some yardwork. "My leaf blower makes an annoying, screechy sound," he said, "it was a treat to block out the commotion."

But while they're extra-rugged, they feel quite comfortable to wear. Jimmy said the leather, memory foam-filled earpads "felt as pleasant as an expensive couch." And the headband is extra-flexible for a snug fit that's also relaxed. (V-MODA even offers optional extra-padded ear cushions.)

Wired mode and customization

V-MODA goes to great measures make sure the headphones fit your needs and taste. If you want to save battery power, you can listen wired. The included cable is reinforced with Kevlar® and features a one-button remote and mic for taking phone calls. Plus you can pick up some of the offered accessories, like a BoomPro mic cable for video games, Skype®, or podcasting.

Outperform any headphones in this price range. I have Bose QC 25 and believe me..these are better than Bose's. XL size earcups should come along with it.

Very solid build. But most importantly they sound great. Very balanced sound. I have heard details in my music I have never heard before. I play mine through a high quality hi res music player and headphone amp. Hate to take them off.

It's pretty good for being Bluetooth and wire at the same time. The only flaw is that sometimes it can be too loud

V-Moda Nailed it!! Amazing headphones amazing price

Stewart from Frederick, Maryland on 7/29/2016

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I had the Sennheiser Momentum 2.0 wireless headphones but sent them back after a month. They have hardly no padding in the headband and for a bald guy that is extremely important. Sound quality was good...just audiophile sound...aka flat. V-Moda has been able to bring "wired" headphone sound quality...in wireless mode. These headphones get plenty of loud and the bass is strong and very punchy, but not over produced. The mids are perfect and the highs and just right. I can't really turn these up as loud as they will go for risk of serious hearing loss..."that's a good thing". Forget Beats, Master and Dynamic, Sennheiser, Bose...these are the perfect balance between an audiophile headphone and a fun sounding headphone as well. Very comfortable to wear as well. Even classical music is nailed perfectly on these headphones. Build quality feels amazing, I almost feel like I should have paid more for these. The only plastic is around the headphone itself. The rest is 90% metal...incredible build quality. Get a pair before the price goes up, you won't regret it. After trying several headphones I finally found perfection!

Pros: amazing price for what feels like a very expensive set of headphones...sound quality is second to none. No difference between wired and Bluetooth sound....incredible. The hype behind V-Moda headphones is well deserved.

Cons: none!

Best Headphones ever!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These headphones have excellent fit and finish, great design and are very comfortable. I was able to pair them with my iPhone in seconds and they have worked flawlessly. The sound quality is awesome, great bass and highs. I use these on my lawn tractor and they do a good job of keeping the external noise out. I would recommend these to anyone.

Pros: Fit to head and ears

Cons: none

Amazing Headphones

Pamela from Durham, NC on 6/10/2016

These headphones are amazing! I am so glad I listened to the customer service rep and ordered them instead of beats. They fit even the largest of heads with ease and the sound quality is perfection. You can order different shields for a truly customized look. Seriously, order these headphones you will not be disappointed!

Pros: Everything

Cons: You have to purchase a share cord separately. (Only a con if you want one and they arent that expensive)

Not that great..for me

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

So I have the sony mdr-xb950bt extra bass Bluetooth headset an decided to try the v-moda because of all the good reviews and build quality, but was disspointed. Sony has more bass and also has the extra bass button, the v moda does have a little less bass and for some reason I feel more bass on the left side than the right side, also they have a lot of treble, now I am no soound expert just a regular guy, I know a lot of people likes the v moda. Now on the build quality, they do look better build than the sony, they look more for younger people tho, the sony look more sleek i think, the v moda are too shinny and yes i know you can change the plates, also you have to purchase the xl pads if you want a better fit, for this price they should come with it, all tho the case is pretty cool and the sony doesn't have a case but does come with the thicker ear pads, sony has nfc and 20hr battery life and the extra bass button, I purchased a hard case for large headsets and they fit great in it. Once again I am no expert, hope it helps.

Pros: Build quality Nice hard case

Cons: Sound, too much treble for my taste Battery life for the size of the headset So so bass Have to buy the xl pads (guess it is okay for some since it comes with a cool hard case}

My first BT headphobes.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've been looking at wireless headphones for a while and read a ton of reviews on the ones of interest to me. I wanted headphones that sounded great wired and wireless. I value sound quality above all else and these Vmodas are pretty close to my needs and wants. To compare, I also have B&W, Grado, Sony and NAD headphones and the Vmodas are the ones that get the most use as of lately. They sound very, very good and the convenience factor is liberating. Not inexpensive, but in this case, you truly get what you pay for. Highly recommended.

Pros: Sound; plenty of bass but not overbearing or flabby. Excellent BT range. Build quality. Industrial heavy-duty look.

Cons: Fatigue after a few hours of head-clamping pressure.

Sturdy Heaphones, Powerful Sound

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

As a first-time V-Moda customer, I must say I'm impressed. First off, lets get the boring stuff out of the way. As far as build quality goes, these cans seem like they will last a very long time. There's a bit more metal than plastic in these things, and they've got the metal where it counts: in high-stress positions in the frame and on the ear cups (the metal shields on the cups can also be replaced and customized). They also come with a compact hardshell case. As far as comfort goes, I highly recommend shelling out an extra 20 bucks for the XL ear cushions. I can't imagine why they don't come standard, as they greatly improve comfort and isolation, and they even widen the soundstage a tiny bit. The built in mic and controls work beautifully. My only gripe is that occasionally the sound over Bluetooth cuts out briefly. I don't know for sure that its the headphones, but it never happens with my BT speaker. Anyway, the sound: These guys are very strong in the low frequencies compared to almost any other headphones I've used. Strong, but clean. The Crossfades don't compromise in the mids and highs to achieve this either. The snares and hi-hats are crisp and the vocals are full, though sometimes a bit warm. The bass is always just where it should be: massive when you want it and non-existent when you don't, but never overpowering or muddy. After listening to all my favorite music on these, from drum & bass to jazz, I can honestly say these things are just plain fun to listen to

Pros: High quality materials, compact hard case, incredible sound

Cons: Less comfortable without XL ear cushions ($20 upgrade), Bluetooth unreliable at times

A Solid Wireless Headphone

aMyth! from Texas on 12/4/2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is my first V-Moda headphone ever and I decided to go for it after extensive research on quality headphone in the $300 price range. And I wasn't disappointed. These sound absolutely phenomenal! You can really "feel" the bass, and the mids and highs are great too. The difference is sound quality between the wired and wireless mode is hardly noticeable. Do note these are not active noise cancelling headphones, but they do isolate the sound pretty well. The headphone is well built, and the packaging was impressive. I bought the Gunmetal Black version but the shields are a little too "chrome" for my liking. Not exactly how it looks in the product images. I also purchased the XL ear pads for this, though honestly I did not find that very helpful, but then I have slightly bigger ears. The one thing I was concerned about was the warranty. V-Moda offers a 1 year warranty on this model and an Immortal Life Program but you have to purchase the product from one of their verified sellers. I did not see Crutchfield listed on their website and wasn't sure if I should return the headphone and purchase from one of the other resellers. I should add that Crutchfield also had the best price for this model. But then I emailed both V-Moda and Crutchfield about this and they assured me everything is fine and my purchase is indeed covered. Now I see V-Moda has updated the list and Crutchfield is indeed in there. So, it's all good and I am very happy with the purchase.

Features

Overview: The V-Moda Crossfade Wireless over-ear headphones feature an immersive 3D soundstage, and a rugged metal construction, built to withstand the rigors of everyday life. With built-in Bluetooth, you can listen to your favorite music or take phone calls without being tethered to your phone. The headphones can also be used as wired headphones, if desired, and include a Speakeasy cable with an in-line microphone and 1-button remote. Also included with the headphones is a tough hard-shell exoskeleton carry case.

Over-ear Design: The Crossfade Wireless have a circumaural (over-the-ear) design that's designed to isolate outside noise, and minimize sound leakage. The supple Bliss Memory Foam cushions naturally form to your ears, providing ergonomic comfort, and creating a seal to shut out external distractions.

Bluetooth: The Crossfire Wireless are equipped with low-power CSR BlueCore technology with Hi-Fi AAC+, AAC, MP3, SBC codecs, and OTA (over-the-air) Flash ROM upgradeable features. The headphones have a wireless range of approximately 33 feet when paired to a Bluetooth device. You can pair them to two devices at once, such as a smartphone + laptop, smartphone + tablet, or smartphone + smartwatch. You can also pair the Crossfire Wireless to some gaming consoles (Sony PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita) via Bluetooth.

Identical Sound: The V-Moda Crossfade Wireless headphones are the result of years of precise engineering to tune and design the wireless electronics to sound virtually identical to the wired Crossfade M-100. You'll experience the exact same performance from the Crossfade Wireless, whether wired or wireless. This was accomplished while maintaining the iconic look and build of V-Moda headphones.

50mm Drivers: The Crossfade Wireless headphones have V-Moda's LP-Class "Live Play" sound signature, with large 50mm Dual-Diaphragm drivers with inner and outer rings that separate the bass from bleeding into the mids and highs. Made with master-crafted materials, the drivers deliver deep, precise bass, lifelike vocals, and crystal clear highs. V-Moda uses more expensive driver components than other headphones in this price range, and quality tests them at 6 different frequencies for more consistency.

Metal Construction: The headphones are built and tested beyond military-level quality standards (MIL-STD-810G). Unlike the plastic headphones from their competitors, the Crossfade Wireless have a steel frame with interchangeable, aircraft-grade metal shields. The Steelflex headband is virtually indestructible; each band is bend-tested flat over 10 times. The headphones will stand up in high or low temperatures, humidity, salt spray, and UV exposure.

Note: Custom metal shields are available from V-Moda in several colors, and with pre-made or custom designs.

Battery Power: The built-in rechargeable battery charges via USB power, using the included V-Micro USB cable (Type A USB and Micro USB connectors). A full charge can provide up to 12 hours of playback, depending upon the volume levels. You can partially charge the battery for shorter playback times:

Charge Time Playback Time
30 minutes 3 hours 30 minutes
60 minutes 7 hours 30 minutes
110 minutes 10 to 12 hours

SpeakEasy Cable: The Crossfade Wireless come with the 54" SpeakEasy cable for use with your smartphone or tablet. The cable has a 45-degree 3.5mm plugs, and is made withstand over 1 million bends. The SpeakEasy cable has a microphone and an in-line 1-button remote that can control music playback and phone calls on most smartphones, and tablets.

Note: For SpeakEasy cable functionality, see the V-Moda Compatibility Matrix.

Exoskeleton Case: The included hard-shell, form-fitting Exoskeleton Case protects your headphones when they're not in use. Panels with V-Straps are provided to store your cables and adapters. A carabiner clip is included for securing your headphones to your backpack.

Optional Accessories: The following items are genuine V-Moda accessories for the Crossfade Wireless:

  • BoomPro Microphone: a flexible, professional-grade boom microphone with an in-line mute and volume control.
