Overview

Our take on the SVS SB-1000

SVS's compact SB-1000 offers deep, punchy bass that belies its modest price and small size. This room-friendly sub packs 300 watts of power and a 12" woofer into a cabinet that can fit inconspicuously into almost any space. You may not see where the bass is coming from, but you'll hear powerful, natural lows that will put some excitement back into your movie nights and music listening sessions.

Deep, powerful bass from a compact subwoofer

SVS's compact SB-1000 offers deep, punchy bass that belies its modest price and small size. This room-friendly sub packs 300 watts of power and a 12" woofer into a cabinet that can fit inconspicuously into almost any space. You may not see where the bass is coming from, but you'll hear powerful, natural lows that will put some excitement back into your movie nights and music listening sessions.

Airtight design for accurate bass

The SB-1000 has a built-in Digital Signal Processor (DSP) that dynamically controls amplifier power to ensure you hear deep, low-distortion bass no matter how loud your music and movies get. It also uses an acoustic suspension (sealed) cabinet design with no hole or port to interact with your room, so you'll experience tight, lightning-quick response from this sub that gives added depth and dimension to drums, bass guitars, and keyboards. And since the driver creates some serious pressure inside the closed cabinet, SVS builds the SB-1000 strong and rigid to eliminate any cabinet flex and keep the bass clean.

Easy system integration

Line-level inputs and outputs let you easily connect this sub to most audio systems. A Low Frequency Effects (LFE) input accepts the subwoofer connection from your A/V receiver. Its back-panel volume, crossover, and phase controls help you fine-tune the bass to ensure a perfect sonic match with your main speakers and your room. The sub includes four conical feet that reduce surface contact area to decrease the amount of vibrations transmitted to the floor. The SB-1000 makes an excellent addition to just about any stereo music or home theater setup.

SVS SB-1000

william from Altamont, NY on 4/2/2018

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Comparing this sub with my retired Boston acoustic mss-130 sub I'm a little disappointed. That was a 10" sealed down firing sub, this is a 12" forward firing with more power yet it seems slightly less powerful. It suits my system but I was expecting a little more. It still fills a larger HT room though. Shipping was quick and the price was decent. If I had th cash and to do again I'd opt for the SB2000 though. Over all good sub.

Pros: Small size. Good sound quality

Cons: Expected more bass from a 12" sub rated at this power level

Great sound, compact

Works well with my bookcase speakers and room size. Easy setup using the SVS recommendations. However, if you have a large room, this sub may not be what you're looking for.

Pros: Small size, great sound.

Cons: A bit pricey.

Good but not enough volume. I just ordered a svs2000 to supplement

Pros: Small and clean presentation. Lows tight and clear

Cons: Lacks volume

Great with music

John from Stratford, CT on 2/19/2018

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Very nice sub. Had hooked up with speaker wire. Now it is with RCA with full input ,using its own crossover. Works great either way. Kicks out those low tones. Used just for music. Went on SVS web site and gave me starting point crossover for my speakers. Very nice sounds much better than my surround sound sub did. Thanks to Tyler for recommendation.

Pros: Compact size and made nice. Like blue light when it's working.

Cons: None

Pros: Compact

Cons: Not for massive bass

Bass so loud it shakes the place

NIKKO from Santa Clara, CA on 12/1/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This thing rocks. I'm definitely no expert but for my living room, it can easily overwhelm you. Some people talk about feeling bass in your chest and even at higher volumes, this sub doesn't give you that sensation but you do feel it in your butt as it vibrates and shakes the floor. We have had to add felt pads behind all of our picture frames on the wall because they vibrate and the cabinets in our hallway on the complete other side of the house "breathe" when the bass hits so we have had to felt pad those doors as well. Overall - this thing rocks and makes music and movies whole.

Pros: Smallish, powerful, powerful, completely transforms the movie watching experience.

Cons: I needed to fortify everything in my house to stop it from rattling when this thing really starts to slam.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

If you are looking to compliment bookshelf speakers in a small to medium sized area, this sealed subwoofer is simply outstanding. Tight, detailed electric bass blends seamlessly and drums have clarity and impact. This subwoofer is easy to set up and I haven't mentioned a price that is half what you should expect to pay. I would recommend a SVS PB1000 ported subwoofer for use in a surround sound system for even more dynamic punch.

Accurate Bass Response

Arjun from San Francisco, CA on 11/10/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This woofer is amazing! Precise and real loud. I was contemplating between the ported vs sealed woofer and i can assure you that i made a wise choice choosing the SVS SB-1000. My apartment is pretty small and the living room where i am using this is around 14*10 feet. This woofer makes me feel every beat and thump that i was missing with my previous Bose home theater. I am using it only at 50% volume but boy... This thing is real good. I tried cranking it up to 100% and i could hear everything rattling around in the apartment. I am pairing this with the Denon AVR-X4300H and keeping this to LFE with 0 phase and 50% volume. I am so happy!!

Pros: 1. Precise Sound 2. Accurate Reproduction

Cons: 1. Should have included the SVS stands. Neighbors would be really unhappy!

Bass for Days!

Anonymous from Atlanta, GA on 8/3/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I had a tough time deciding on this mainly due to the price. It was a lot of money for a single sub-woofer especially compared to my previous ones. Though this time I wanted to try something different to see if I was missing out on anything. Oh boy was I missing out! This sub-woofer works beyond great with movies and music and is really accurate even as you crank the volume up. I had to talk to several people (friends and Crutchfield advisers) and everyone said to go with SVS hands down. I'm glad that I did and wish I took the plunge sooner. If you are on the fence like I was just dive in! You will not regret it!

Pros: Accurate and house filling sound (it fills way more than a room with sound)

Cons: None

Boomy Bass

Donald from VA on 7/24/2017

I bought this subwoofer based on the recommendation of a representative from Crutchfield. After having it for a little less than a year, I can say that I do not like it. Bass, yes, there's lots of it but not the kind that pleases my ears. The SB-1000 is very boomy and not well defined, in other words, mushy. It will not be part of my surround sound system for much longer.

Pros: Bass and lots of it

Cons: Boomy and mushy, too large and they are not very attractive

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Initially I did not notice any difference from my old Polk sub. I spoke with SVS and they suggested I use my receivers auto calibration system. What a difference! The bass is clean clear and awesome. Thank you Crutchfield and SVS

Pros: Easy to set up and great sound.

Cons: None

Awesome sub!

James from Sayreville, NJ on 6/27/2017

Incredible sub for the money period. I mean this thing really rocks the house, and I only have it on 50%. Really great sub that really makes a home theater what its supposed to be. I'm just thrilled with the PB-1000.

Pros: Super deep bass for a low price. Its a high quality bass too, not boomy at all.

Cons: None that I can find.

Clean tight bass

clean tight bass, blends in beautifully with music and movies. Sealed sub is the way to go.

Pros: Tight hard hitting bass, blends in perfectly. Small compact size

Cons: my neighbors are to close

You can feel the boom.

I love this subwoofer. It has deep tight bass. Awesome with music. Great bang for the price. It has better bass than my 10 year old M&K.

Pros: The compact design works well with smaller rooms.

Cons: None

Love it!

David from Jersey City, NJ on 1/18/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This SVS subwoofer is used along with a Arcam integrated amplifier with Sonus Faber Venere 2.5 speakers and a Peach Tree DAC iTX. All my music is FLACs including high-bit rate (e.g. 24/192) from a Synology NAS via async USB B. It sounds great as an audio 2.1 system and it has no issues for film / TV / BluRay. Great low bass with high accuracy / tight. I've played all sorts of music -- pop, jazz, blues, classical, hip hop, metal -- and it does it all. I've set it only at 1/3 volume and can't imagine going much above it in the living room of my one bedroom apartment which is not a tiny room by any means. Aesthetically the black gloss piano finish and compact size goes well with my decor -- real walnut furniture (mid century modern), walnut veneer speakers, back glass entertainment console, black LCD TV, etc. So it's a win / win for me!

Pros: Has all sorts of inputs -- high level, LFE, etc. Adjustable -- cross over frequency, volume, phase control Standby mode (both awake/sleep) works flawlessly without the mono trigger cable to amp Good looking in black gloss piano finish Modest price for the sound quality On-time free two day shipping as usual

Cons: Can't think of anything besides wishing that Crutchfield had a local listening / viewing center

There's a reason for all those great reviews.

Ken K from Buffalo, NY on 1/6/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I replaced an older down-firing, rear-ported beast of a sub with the SVS SB-1000. Sorta like replacing a manatee with a gazelle. No more one-note, bloated, boomy bass. Instead I now have velvety, deep, fast musical bass. Who knew bass players played more than one note?! My living room is 16'x 20' with 9' ceilings. I was concerned that the SB-1000 would be a little underpowered for the room. Not at all! Not even close. This thing rocks the whole apartment just fine. Finding a sweet spot for it was easier, too, due to it's compact size. Holds it's own with movie soundtracks, too. Super deep, well-controlled accurate bass at a decent price. I couldn't be happier.

Pros: Bass like butter! Great on movies, but really shines with music.

Cons: I'd like to have the option to purchase a steel grille for it (like the one on the SB-2000).

Compact size and good bass

Gene from Spokane, WA on 12/18/2016

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This sub passed the wife test first as it is compact enough to fit behind some furniture and isn't seen. It was easy to setup and adjusted to my room and system easily. I using it with a .Marantz integrated amp which uses speaker line level outputs for the sub and also Klipsch Rpm160 speakers in a room 25 by 35. I found the bass to be tight and gets deep deep enough for the jazz and blues i listen too. I like it and am happy with it.

Pros: compact size, good bass for music

Cons: none i can think of

Strong, tight and fast bass

Paul from Ottawa, Ontario on 12/8/2016

After a great deal of research, I puchased an SB-1000 as a modern upgrade to my HK 3350 receiver and B&W satellites. I was seeking a sub that could deliver clean and accurate bass in a 12 x 16 foot living room connected to a slightly smaller dining room. My interests are purely musical though quite broad (60s-80s classic rock, 70s prog rock, Motown, R&B, and the odd pop riff), so I wanted something that had a capacity ranging from drums to bass and cello. The multiple inputs (including a high level one) simplified the connection to my older system. Owners of newer amplifier/receivers also have the choice of line-level or LFE hook-up. Either way, the initial set up was very simple (see SVS' article on subwoofer set up). The SB-1000 delivered fast, tight, and accurate bass right away. It dramatically improved my system's sound stage to the point where a blindfolded listener could be excused for thinking that I'm running a systen of hundreds of watts (RMS) through towers. The form factor of the SB-1000 is compact, fitting into my living room unobtrusively. Sonic performance is superb and very linear. It proportionally delivers strong bass, saving one from the hassle of having to fiddle with gain at low or high volumes. I really enjoy this sub and would highly recommend it for apartments and medium sized homes. In my view, it offers the best bang for the buck out there, making it a safe choice for those new to subwoofers.

Pros: Performance, ease of installation and set-up, small form factor

Cons: Rear mounted controls (would be handy setting up initially near a wall or corner), difficult to find at retail level (best ordered online or thru distributor)

Disappointed

James from Goose Creek, SC on 6/5/2016

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I like to set my sub to "Auto" so it will turn itself off after I turn my receiver off (Denon mid level receiver). In standby it shows a red light and it has a blue indicator light which turns on when the unit is on, but my unit doesn't come on when I think there's enough bass in the movie or program i'm watching to warrant the subwoofer to be assisting my speakers. When it comes on it sounds good, but my unit comes on intermittently and not when I think it should be on. I read the reviews for this unit before I decided to buy it and there were enough positive reviews for it for me to decide to buy it. I need to call Crutchfield and discuss this with one of their techs.

Pros: It sounds good when it works.

Cons: 50% of the time when the unit is set to "Auto" it stays in the off mode even when there is clearly bass in the movie or program i'm watching that needs the sub and the unit doesn't come on like it should. I'm disappointed to say the least.

Fantastic Packaging, nothing like i have ever experienced, thats where the positive ends. Understand your room's cubic volume, I would rate this sub at best as a PC sub or for a very small room. SVS S B-2000 could have and should have been what I was sold. RCA Jacket pulled off the LSE speaker jack, you only get one opportunity to make a first impression. Im sure a good product, just a poor fit and a wrong selection by my sales person.

Pros: small but has plenty of punch

Sub woofer .

Richard D. Bills from Jacksonville, FL on 4/5/2016

In the last 6 year I have had to replace 2 sub woofers,( paying over $600.00 for each name brand)due to amp fail. I picked this sub, because of 5 year warranty and good ratings. Set it up with my 3D sound system(6.1) Testing with some of the DVD I knew had outstanding sound. Did a fine tune and I love the sound. I did get what I was looking for at a price I liked.

SVS is now my favorite powered subwoofer

Paul from austin, TX on 3/23/2016

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The SVS SB-1000 powered subwoofer surpasses all my expectations. The compact design that houses a large 12 inch subwoofer in an acoustic suspension means loud, deep and accurate bass. This subwoofer blends perfectly with my Definitive Technology ST8020 as the low extension of the SVS subwoofer round out my entire system. The bass is always nicely controlled and even on very loud passages the driver never had a hiccup. I have always had ported powered subwoofer and after hearing how clean and accurate an acoustic suspension powered subwoofer sounds I am never going back.

Pros: Powerful accurate bass Very easy to adjust and tailor to your existing system Low distortion at loud passages Very compact and light design for a 12 inch subwoofer

Cons: None so far

The old. Onkyo Receiver, Bose 6.1 system that's 10 years old, still sounded good and was working well, buy It was out of date. No bluetooth, wifi, usb, etc... In with the New! Yamaha Aventage RX-A840 purchased from a different online retailer. Everything else is from Crutchfield. Cables are AudioQuest Pearl & Cinnamon HDMI. Speaker cables are AudioQuest Type 4 & Rocket 33 for speakers & Black Lab for Sub. SVS SB-1000 Sub (Scratch & Dent) Focal Chorus 705 Bookshelf Speakers & Focal Chorus 716 Floor Speakers. Center Channel Klipsch RP-440C. And all housed in a Rosewood 7ft x 9ft entertainment center with a 3 yr old LED Samsung 50 in TV. I probably spent $3K 10 yrs ago and I did not use AudioQuest cables. The old system was nice, but my ears have matured away from Bose since upgrading my car system to Focal, listening to Hi-Res music files with a DAC, and having high end Headphones and Earbuds. I understand there are much nicer systems for a lot more money. But, for the money, I am a very happy customer. I would have loved to use a Focal Center, but I needed a center that could hold my TV, and Klipsch had one. The sound is amazingly Smooth, balanced, and powerful! Everything blends well despite being a front facing 5.1 system. I get Great separation on movies, music, and TV programs. Yamaha does an excellent job of processing and I don't miss having speakers behind or beside me. Very clean Highs, Mids & Lows singing in perfect harmony...

Pros: Powerful & Very Smooth Bass. Not Boomy unless you want it to be.

Cons: None

Makes a Big Difference

Ken S from Maryland on 10/1/2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Was running a 3.1 set-up with a Yamaha RX-V677 AVR, and Definitive Technology 800 side speakers and sub, as well as a DT 1000 center speaker. Sounded good, but decided to upgrade a bit. Changed my side speakers to Definitive Technology 1000. Nice difference. Movies sounded good, but felt music was a little underwhelming. Planned on upgrading the sub to Definitive Technology 1000 Pro Sub, but decided to do a little research first. After reading a number of forum posts and reviews, came away with the impression that there were better choices for a powered subwoofer. SVS subs consistently received stellar reviews from customers and industry reviewers. Picked the SB 1000 sub over the PB 1000 because 1) many reviewers said it was better for music, and 2) it was smaller. I live in a townhouse and my living room is not too large. I added a set of SVS Soundpath Subwoofer isolation feet which raised the sub a bit more off the ground and helped prevent floor and wall shaking. Want to stay on good terms with my townhouse neighbor. Love the sound and depth coming from the SVS sub. Much more complex than what I got from the DT 800 sub. Of course, I didn't compare it to the DT 1000 sub, but I'm very happy with my choice. The SVS sub and Definitive Technology speakers are a great package.

Features

12" High Output Woofer: The front-firing 12" high output woofer of the SVS SB-1000 powered subwoofer pumps out deep and powerful bass with low distortion, for smooth and accurate performance on music and movies soundtracks. The woofer features a lightweight 12" cone for enhanced sensitivity and transient response, a long-throw suspension for high output at low frequencies, plus a rubber surround for durability and long-life. It also incorporates FEA-optimized motor technology for low distortion, high-power voice coil for excellent thermal management, and vented pole piece for greater cooling.

STA-300D Sledge Amplifier: The SB-1000 powered subwoofer employs a Sledge STA-300D amplifier with efficient and cool-running Class D topology. The amplifier is conservatively rated at 300 watts RMS and 720 watts Peak. This amp features a highly advanced DSP processor offering unmatched control over the subwoofer at all volume levels, for distortion free bass.

Rigid Sealed Enclosure: The SVS SB-1000 powered subwoofer features a rigid and strong cabinet to resist unwanted distortion caused by vibration. The enclosure is an acoustic suspension (sealed) design for tight, accurate bass response. The cabinet is elegantly finished in a premium black ash wood-grain vinyl or gloss piano-black lacquer, and fits with practically any décor.

Variable Controls: The SB-1000 subwoofer has simple and straightforward control options that make integrating the subwoofer into your listening environment an easy task. The control knobs are actually digital actuators for precise and noise-free adjustment.

  • Volume Control: The Volume Control (Min/Max) affects how loud the subwoofer plays. It should be adjusted to match the output level of your loudspeakers.
  • Low Pass Crossover: This Low Pass Crossover affects the upper frequency limit of the powered sub. The control
range is 50-160 Hz, along with a "LFE" (disabled) setting. The slope of the low pass crossover is 12 dB/octave. For connection to a home theater receiver, the low pass should be set to "LFE" (disabled). For stereo receiver, it should be adjusted to blend with the natural roll-off frequency of your loudspeakers.
  • Phase Control: The Phase Control (0-180°) delays the signal being processed through the amplifier. It should be adjusted to obtain the most coherent and stable soundstage and transition between your loudspeakers and the powered subwoofer.

Low-Level and High-Level Connectivity: Comprehensive and flexible connectivity with low-level or high-level options allow for easy set-up and integration into your home theater or stereo system

  • LFE/RCA Inputs: These unbalanced RCA inputs are used for line-level connections between your receiver and the powered sub. For a single mono connection to a home theater receiver, use the R/LFE input. For stereo receivers, use both the L/R inputs.
  • Speaker Inputs: This connection method is for 2-channel stereo applications where the integrated amplifier or stereo receiver only has high-level (i.e., speaker-level) outputs. The powered sub's speaker inputs consist of 5-way binding posts that will accept bare wire (up to 10AWG), pin-connectors, spade-connectors, and banana plugs (dual or single).
  • RCA Outputs: These unbalanced RCA outputs are used in stereo applications to high pass the signal being sent to the loudspeaker amplifier. The line level outputs feature a fixed 80 Hz 12 dB/octave high pass filter.

Placement Options: If possible, place the subwoofer near the front stage, for best blending with the front and center loudspeaker channels.

  • Corner Placement: Corner placement will accommodate most rooms and will reduce the chances for encountering a null (an acoustic cancellation in the bass response) at the listening position. If your AV receiver equalizes the subwoofer channel during auto-set-up, corner placement will often provide the best overall performance.
  • Other Placement Options: If corner placement sound excessively boomy, then try moving the subwoofer to other available locations along the front stage, listening for the best balance of output and a smooth accurate response. Always redo the auto-set-up of your AV receiver after moving the subwoofer to a different location to ensure the acoustic distance and calibration level are set correctly.
  • Dual Subs: To maximize the bass output and impact of your home theater, two SB-1000s can be paired; one on either side of your room.

Auto/Standby & On Switch: If this switch is set to "Auto/Standby", it will automatically turn-on the powered subwoofer in the presence of an audio signal. If no signal is present for a period of several minutes, the powered subwoofer will enter "Standby" mode, where power consumption will be less than 0.5 watts. If this switch is set to "On", the amplifier will remain on continuously and will not enter "Standby" mode.

Power Status Light: The power status light is located on the front-panel of the powered subwoofer in the upper left corner. The light will illuminate blue when the amplifier is on. The light will illuminate red when the amplifier is in standby mode.

3V-12V Trigger Input: When in standby mode, the powered sub's trigger input (3.5mm) can be used to automatically turn on the powered subwoofer if a signal is sent to this input from another component in the system (like your AV receiver) that features a trigger output.

Crutchfield asked
Why did you buy this?

My old Cambridge Soundworks Bass Cube 12S stopped working, so I needed a new sub for my office. I am happy with the SVS PB12-NSD I have for my home theater setup, so I figured I couldn't go wrong with a smaller sub from SVS. [ Davin  Mar 27, 2018 ]
Good reviews, Small size for a big sound. matches with my current surround speaker package. [ WILLIAM  Mar 19, 2018 ]
Great sound and value for the price [ IBRAHIIM  Mar 08, 2018 ]
reviews and research [ Mitchel  Mar 07, 2018 ]
SVS reputation, product compact size with a 12 inch woofer and price. Would have preferred a frequency range that extended to 20 HZ or below but 24 HZ was close enough. The options and features offered a lot of flexibility. [ Winfield  Sep 06, 2017 ]
My choice was based on Crutchfield articles and contact with a representative. [ Ronald  Jun 20, 2017 ]

Recommended by one of your advisors based on my application and size of my cabinet. [ J  Jan 23, 2017 ]
Wanted a sealed sub, as I prefer tight bass to boomy overwhelming sound. Great reviews on SVS brand. Didn't want to break the bank, but I do love bass. [ Theodore  Jan 10, 2017 ]
Has speaker level inputs, compact size and reputation of company that makes it is good. [ Gene  Dec 01, 2016 ]
David at Crutchfield recommended it over the Klipsch R-112sw I was looking at. [ David  Oct 25, 2016 ]
Reviews are pretty good. [ Andrew  Oct 05, 2016 ]
I had a Klipsch sub woofer that just didn't work and I read the reviews for this SVS unit and it sounded like a good unit for me. I've been pleased with it since I made the purchase from Crutchfield and i'm glad I decided on this unit. [ James  Sep 14, 2016 ]
Reviews..haven't heard it yet... [ Mickey  Aug 16, 2016 ]
Best independent reviews. Reviews verified manufacturer specs. [ John  Mar 20, 2016 ]
I have never heard of SVS before, this was recommend by my advisor Abe. I did some online research and for the most part most audio experts agree that SVS makes great Subs for the $$$ [ Aaron  Dec 31, 2015 ]
Small footprint with very high ratings from a company that was started just to make great subs. Replacing a Polk PSW-111 whose amp died after just 5 yrs of light use. Much cheaper than the SVS, but I'm hoping the SVS will perform better and last longer. [ Guest  Dec 28, 2015 ]
For older two-channel systems like my tube amplifier, this has speaker level inputs (non-banana plug). Fingers crossed that it'll pair well with my Klipsch Heresy III speakers! [ Mark  Jul 08, 2017 ]
I had read a lot of articles about the benefits of two subwoofers in a large home theater setup and am very happy with the outcome. It helps fill a room with 10.5' ceilings and odd harmonic characteristics in a way that my original subwoofer could not do without the second subwoofer. [ JOSEPH P  Jul 19, 2017 ]
