Overview

Our take on the Master & Dynamic MH40

I'd heard a lot about Master & Dynamic's MH40 over-ear headphones, so I was thrilled when they showed up at Crutchfield. The New York-based company has quickly developed a reputation for crafting rock-solid headphones with old-school looks and killer sound. And boy do they know presentation. Just pulling these headphones from their leather storage case felt like a big deal.

Retro-looking headphones that live up to their rep

I'd heard a lot about Master & Dynamic's MH40 over-ear headphones, so I was thrilled when they showed up at Crutchfield. The New York-based company has quickly developed a reputation for crafting rock-solid headphones with old-school looks and killer sound. And boy do they know presentation. Just pulling these headphones from their leather storage case felt like a big deal.

The MH40s feel both refined and rugged. High-quality leather lines the flexible metal headband. It's reinforced with steel headphone sliders. When I slipped these 'phones on — even without active noise cancellation — they fit firmly and blocked out office chatter and ruffling papers.

Incredibly clean, accurate sound

I tried the MH40 headphones on an unfortunate, mournful day for music fans — the day we lost David Bowie. Shocked at the news, I listened to his new album and a playlist of his legendary catalog. Perhaps the best compliment I can give the MH40s is that they stayed out of the way. On a day when I just wanted to hear Bowie, Masters & Dynamic made that happen, without flavoring.

His new song "Sue (Or in a Season of Crime)" stood out. The bass line and drums hit with authority, while cymbals shimmered and the horns sounded open. Vocals melted their way into the mix cleanly and beautifully. Even when all these sounds collapsed on one another to evoke chaos, I could pick out each distinct instrument through these 'phones — especially Bowie's sweet yet visceral pipes.

Well-built and softly padded

As cool as these heavy-duty metal 'phones feel in your hand, you may worry that they'd be tough to wear. Not true. Padding and proper weight distribution ensure a comfortable fit. Soft lambskin leather lines the memory foam earpads so that, while snug, the headphones never feel like they're clamping. And the sturdy construction is very much welcome. They simply don't slip around as you listen throughout the day.

Take calls and control your iPhone®

A smaller, round leather case is packed inside the larger one. It holds two cloth-covered cables: a 2-meter listening cable and a shorter cable with a built-in remote for controlling Apple® devices. Play and pause music, skip forward and back, and adjust the volume. The built-in microphone also lets you take calls with your iPhone, or talk to friends and family on FaceTime.

Excellent Build and Sound But a Bit Heavy

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Overall I'm very satisfied with Master and Dynamic MH40 headphones. They sound very natural and accurate. Watch out for crappy recordings, you'll hear it!

Pros: Both, build quality and sound reproduction are excellent

Cons: I do find Master and Dynamic MH40 a bit heavy and after wearing them for awhile I really start feeling the weight and need to adjust them on my head

Comfort for your ears, power & clarity for you tympanic membranes.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Incredible build quality and sound clarity at an affordable price. These phones are not for the weak of heart. If you're looking for a pair of phones to power your most demanding HiFi music- these are the ones. Using these with my Fiio X5ii and a library of FLAC albums ripped from vinyl. Even my 55 year old dad, who generally is pretty reluctant to 'buy into' products that market 'better' quality audio or video said "wow!" when I let him try them out and even started dancing around the room. Haha. Thanks Master Dynamic (and Bob Marley).

Pros: Crisp clear sound, extraordinary build quality (metal and leather, no cheap plastic), and super comfortable. Also deadens outside noise- even though they are not meant to be 'noise cancelling'.

Cons: A hard case would've been nice as a opposed to the soft pouch, but do we really need to find something to complain about? I think not. I'm super happy with my purchase.

O.O

Audio Junkie from Nashville, TN on 1/19/2016

I originally ordered from another vendor, but then I found that this website is better for reviews.

Pros: First thing's first. Build quality. These things are built like a tank, and with swiveling earcups, these headphones are also very comfortable. Now we are getting to the best part. Sound. These are my new favorites as far as this is concerned. It cancels out noise before you even plug them in, and they are very precise and balanced.

Cons: There are only two bad thins about this. One is the price. They are rather expensive, but they are still worth it. The other problem is that they do not fold. This problem is solved by a big ol' hard case that also fits the headphones. Without the ability to fold, they are not very portable.

Ear Pads/Headband: The ear pads are made with memory foam, covered in soft lambskin for superior comfort and breathability. The ear pads are removable for cleaning or replacement, and attach to the ear cups with magnets. The headband features heavy grain premium cowhide on the outside and lambskin on the inside.

Supplied Cables: The MH40 headphones come with a 4' tangle-resistant woven cable with an in-line 3-button remote, and a 6.5' woven cable without remote. Both cables have a straight 3.5mm plug that's compatible with many smartphone cases. A snap-on 3.5mm-to-6.3mm (1/4") adapter is provided for use with home components. The in-line microphone is separate from the remote, and placed closer to your mouth for better vocal clarity and reduced noise. The remote and mic are compatible with Apple products: iPhone 3GS or later, iPad, and iPod touch (2nd generation or later). Remote functions for Apple include: Volume Up/Down, Play/Pause, Answer/Hang up call, Skip forward, Skip Backward, Fast forward, Fast reverse, and Voice Commands. The remote has limited functionality (play/pause) with Android devices.

Dual Audio Ports: The headphones have 3.5mm audio ports on both ear cups. This allows you to connect the headphone cable to either the left or right side. It also allows you to share your music by plugging another set of headphones into the unused headphone jack.

Mute Button: The MH50s are equipped with a mute button on the outside of the right ear cup. When the button is pressed in, the audio is muted. When the button is pressed, the button springs out, and the audio is un-muted.

Why did you buy this?

After extensive review and trying out multiples headphones from friends and at a few stores, I decided that this pair was the most well rounded of my choices: Excellent sound quality with impressive bass and beautiful highs and mids, along with an unmatched build quality at price that fit my budget.
