August Smart Lock HomeKit™ Edition - It installs on the interior side of your door, and works with your existing hardware and key
From August: Smart Lock Homekit Enabled
The August Smart Lock installs on the interior side of your door, and works with your existing deadbolt lock and key.
August set the bar for intelligent home access with their first-generation Smart Lock. Now, they've raised that bar even higher with the newly updated HomeKit Edition. The Smart Lock provides intelligent access to your home so you and your welcomed guests can come and go hassle-free. Use Siri to lock or unlock your door with voice commands, anywhere in your home. You can also have her check the status of your lock from across the house. The Smart Lock integrates into your HomeKit system, working seamlessly with other compatible devices.
This sleek, technology-packed lock replaces the manual knob on the interior side of your existing deadbolt, giving you peace of mind over when and how your door is locked and unlocked. Because the Smart Lock is only installed on the inside of your door, your original hardware remains in place. You can still use your existing house key anytime you like. Installation is straightforward, and your original deadbolt thumb turn can be reinstalled anytime — ideal for renters or if you move. Best of all, there's no indication from the outside that anything has been changed on your door.
Using Bluetooth® Low Energy, the Smart Lock senses when you leave your home with your smartphone and can automatically lock the door for you. When you get back, it unlocks as you approach the door, freeing up your hands and eliminating the need to insert a key. You can manually lock and unlock the door from inside by rotating the Smart Lock. The front cover is easily removable to access the replaceable "AA" batteries. (August explains that 4 "AA"s last approximately 6-9 months when the Smart Lock is installed correctly and your deadbolt isn't "sticky.")
Does the babysitter or dog-walker need to get in while you're away? Instead of hiding a key under the doormat (or even worse, forgetting to leave one at all), use the free August app for Apple® to generate one-time access codes. Or, create a scheduled window of time that they can come in. Using just their smartphone, they'll have secure access anytime you want them to, and no access when you don't.
With the August Connect linked to your home Wi-Fi® network, you'll get notifications on your phone when someone comes and goes, so you'll always be in the loop. You can also remotely let guests in at the touch of a button, even when you're across town or across the country. Install the August Smart Keypad in your doorway for secure, code-based entry into your home. It's perfect for letting the kids in without needing either a physical key or a smart device. Use the August Doorbell Cam to monitor entry and communicate with guests.

If you need to have people come and go in the house when you are not home, this is the best lock you can find. We use it to let in workers and then keep track of how long they are there and how often they need to come back. The app could be a bit faster to connect but we have been happy with the purchase.
Not impressed so far. They claim to offer an install service. I contacted the service and after 48 hrs was told no one in my state installs August professionally. They were right. Could not get anyone to come to the house to install lock, not even a physical security expert who lives 4 blocks from my house. Turns out it was Easy to install for someone who can barely connect a soundbar Took 15 minutes with hardware. Then the fun began. Tried to connect to Apple Home via Apple TV. No. Tried to connect via Nest. No. Downloaded app on iPhone. It works fine. Tried to access app from iPad. No. 3 factor authentication ( have not seen that on a consumer product) results in an error message rather than promised access email. Every time. I'd wait until they get their act together. UPDATED 6/27/17: I want to change my review of this product. Since I wrote the review of August Smart Lock, I spoke with their support. The live support was excellent. All my issues were resolved. I want to give the product 4 stars. Thank you.
Pros: Easy to install Good online instructions
Cons: Poor/non-existent network support in all senses of the phrase network support
I bought a house 45 min to 1 hour away from where I live right now, and I need to be able to let a lot of various contractors into the house. I just re-keyed the entire house, so I didn't want to let more than a dozen people all have access to my new keys. Also, I wanted to know exactly when someone entered my house. As advertised, the install took 15 minutes, and I'm no handyman. It was important for me that this would work through Wi-fi, so I used Apple HomeKit through my AppleTV. It worked great while I tested it, but then I left town later that day, and I couldn't communicate with it. I was disappointed, until I realized that remote access required a 4th generation AppleTV and I had been using a 3rd generation. Once I bought a 4th gen Apple TV, it has been great! It has saved hours and hours of time by avoiding having to leave work and meet a contractor to let him into my house. So far, (knock on wood) I haven't experience any of the negative issues that other people have mentioned. The only thing I'd say that is remotely negative is that I was a bit surprised how large it was. I expected it to be the diameter of a can of soda, but it's much larger.... like the size of a Costco muffin.
Pros: Fast, easy install Consistent performance so far Works remotely
Cons: Slightly larger than expected.
I bought this (for a second home) because reviews said it was best in class. However, unlike my Nest thermostat and my Ring doorbell, I cannot control it from my phone unless I am close to it or have set up another piece of equipment to serve as a "bridge." Since my Apple TV (which could serve as a bridge) is on the second floor -- while the lock is on the first -- it's too far to serve as a bridge. And I will not buy another iPad to leave in this second property just to serve as a bridge. I wish I had not bought it.
Pros: easy to install
Cons: needs extra equipment to control remotely
I bought one Smart Lock so that I could get into my shop by using a keypad and 2 others so that the doors on my home would unlock automatically when I approached. Both of the features work most of the time, but every fourth or fifth time the auto unlock doesn't work and the keypad access is even less reliable. The Smart Lock at the shop is out of Bluetooth range while in the house and has an August Connect as a bridge from Bluetooth to WiFi. The lock works with Apple's HomeKit when close enough to make a Bluetooth connection, but when far enough away that the connection must be made through WiFi using the August Connect, they don't work with HomeKit App, but still can be locked, unlocked and monitored using the August iPhone App.
Great product, solid design, and easy to install. The update takes a little time as you might expect with any new device, but it's worth the wait.
A fun little product. That it unlocks your door as you approach is really cool when your hands are full or dirty.
Pros: fun. Easy to install
Cons: So far none.
Easy to install works like a charm
Pros: Easy to install Simple directions
Cons: Tape in box not adequate to hold lock on the outside.
Overview: The August Smart Lock HomeKit Edition attaches to your existing deadbolt lock and lets you lock and unlock your door with your smartphone. With Smart Lock, you no longer have to fumble for keys, as the Smart Lock unlocks the door as you approach and locks it as you leave. You can grant temporary access to others ("virtual keys"), and use your smartphone to keep track of who comes and goes anytime of the day and night. Smart Lock replaces only the interior portion of your deadbolt, allowing you to continue using your traditional key whenever you want. It is powered by 4 pre-installed "AA" batteries.
Compatibility: August Smart Lock is compatible with standard deadbolt locks that are mounted and operates independently of the door handle. It does not work with integrated lock and handle or mortise deadbolts in which the thumb latch and handle are on the same plate, nor is it compatible with rim cylinder-style locks. Click here for the August Deadbolt Compatibility List. To install the Smart Lock, you will need to remove the interior portion of the deadbolt, and replace it with the Smart Lock unit. Installation requires a standard Phillips screwdriver, and typically takes less than 15 minutes.
Apple HomeKit Compatible: This version of the August Smart Lock is enabled with Apple HomeKit, which provides exclusive features when used with an iPhone or iPad (iOS 9+). For example, you can use Siri to lock or unlock the door using a key phrase. Plus, if you have a 3rd or 4th generation Apple TV within Bluetooth range of the Smart Lock, you can remotely operate the door (with or without Siri) from anywhere using your iPhone.
Note: August Smart Lock is also available in a non-HomeKit enabled version. Please see items 967ASL3 and 967ASL4.
Smartphone Integration: The Smart Lock interacts with your smartphone or tablet via Bluetooth Smart (Bluetooth v4.0) and the August Home app. The app must be loaded to the phone of all users, including guests. As long as your smartphone is range, you can lock or unlock the door from the app. Each time the door is locked or unlocked by a user via the app, a notification is sent to selected users, and the event is logged to the app.
Note: The August Home app is compatible with iPhone, iPad, iPod touch running iOS 8.0 or later and with Android devices running Android 4.4 and up.
2 Factor Authentication: To keep your August Smart Lock and account secure, August uses 2 Factor Authentication in order to access the app. When signing up, you will need to validate both your email and phone number, and a token is stored on your account and device. If you try to sign in on a new device, you will have to authenticate your account using both your password and with a code sent to either your email or phone number.
Smart Keypad: The August Smart Keypad is an accessory for the August Smart Lock. It attaches to the wall outside your home, and allows you operate the Smart Lock without a smartphone. Unique codes can be generated for each individual, including guests or service personnel. The unique codes tie your guest's name to each entry so you can keep track of who comes and goes. The Smart Lock and Smart Keypad can create a 24/7 log of who entered your home and when.
Smart Connect: The August Connect is an accessory for the August Smart Lock, and uses your home's Wi-Fi network (802.11b/g/n, 2.4GHz) and Internet connection to control the Smart Lock from anywhere using the August app. Connect plugs into a standard AC outlet, and should be installed within 15 feet of the Smart Lock for optimal performance and reliability.
August Lock Users: There are several levels of users of the August Home app. The Home Owner is the individual who originally set up the lock and has access to all of the settings and can invite (and delete) guests. A Lock Owner has all of the same access to the settings and guest lists. A Guest can lock and unlock the Smart Lock at any time, but cannot change settings or invite other guests. Access types for Guests include: Always, Recurring, and Temporary. The account of each Owner or Guest can be set up whether or not to trigger notifications when that specific user operates the lock.
