Overview

Our take on the ELAC Debut F6

It's not often that we see breakthroughs in the world of home loudspeakers, but renowned speaker designer Andrew Jones has done it with ELAC's Debut series speakers. They are the culmination of Jones' years of engineering experience, and the results are simply astonishing. The F6 towers are the flagship model within the Debut family, and they offer jaw-dropping performance for the price. Strong words, true, but you should have seen the look on people's faces when ELAC stopped by our training room recently and fired them up. Custom-designed drivers deliver sparkling detail with deep, room-filling bass. Use a pair of the F6s as the front channels of your home theater. Or make them part of a two-channel music system and bring a concert hall into your listening room.

Detailed, theater-like sound

Immersive full-range sound

One of the secrets behind the F6's incredible performance is its custom-designed 10-element crossover. Jones uses this important component to ensure smooth frequency distribution between each of the drivers. It routes high frequencies to the 1" silk dome tweeter, while sending mids and lows to the powerful  6-1/2" woven aramid-fiber midrange and bass drivers. The result is full, natural sound at an affordable price.

A legendary speaker designer strikes again

Andrew Jones made a name for himself designing phenomenal high-end speakers across the industry. Lately, he's turned his attention toward creating speakers that offer excellent performance at very affordable prices. The Debut F6 floor-standing speakers are his latest triumph. They make a perfect match in a surround sound setup with the entire ELAC Debut line, all of which were designed by Jones.

ELAC "Speakers from Heaven"

Anonymous from Apopka, FL on 3/25/2018

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have never heard of ELAC but I kept seeing videos on youtube saying that these speakers were the best money could buy for the price they are selling for. Wow were they right. I had Polk Audio 60 monitors which I liked but these are so much better. I use them mostly for 5.1 surround and my 2 thoughts are this. 1. The highs and mids are more detailed meaning I hear more things like birds in the background and heavy breathing that I didn't hear with my Polks. 2. They sound fuller or to put it another way the sound seems thicker and more room filling (Hope that makes sense) and its a good thing. If you are interested in these speakers then make sure you check and see if they have any open box or scratch and dent. The price is really awesome if there available.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Super clear sound. The highs are top notch. Mids are lacking and bass is nearly nonexistent. The fit and finish is second to none. I have 4 of these speakers a center elac and a svs1000 sub. Not getting the volume I'm looking for. Driving system with a Denon3400H. Just ordered a svs2000 sub and 2 warfdale 250s to supliment system.

Pros: Fit and finish and high quality materials. Highs are crystal clear.

Cons: Lack power and volume. Little bass and mids.

My impression

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great speakers just what I expected from Andew Jones. I used to own a pair of Yamaha concert series floor speakers I purchased new back in 1992 3 way with a 12" woofer and was sceptical about the lows on the F6's was I wrong... I could hear every instrument at its finest and the bass was tight and balanced not boomy like my Yamaha's. I would highly recommend these speakers and would not consider them entry level.

Pros: Great sound reproduction very detailed music or movies. Great build quality

Cons: None

I absolutely love these speakers. I'm hearing guitar and piano notes on my favorite songs and music that I have been missing on my old speakers. The bass coming out of them is perfect, not needing a sub woofer. Very happy with my purchase of these speakers, especially for the money.

Cons:

More bang for the buck than most big name brands I've had.

Good speakers for the money. Each speaker I've heard in this price range has its own limitations, but to my ear, the Elac F6 seemed to be the most well rounded and best value when compared with similarly priced Klipsch and Polk towers I considered.

I bought this speaker thinking it is good as ELAC Debut B6 which is an excellent one. F6 doesn't sound good as the review says. I compared with my old Cambridge Sound Works Tower II using Denon AVR X4300H. Rega P3. Mid range and high frequencies getting lost in F6, you can also hear the box noice too.

Cons: Sound quality

I have been using this pair of speakers for a month now. Let me start by writing that it needs a break in period. Once it is broken in, it will continue to give you an excellent soundstage. The highs as well as the mids is just enough, not too bright. Bass is also not bad, it is just enough in my own opinion. I can't afford to buy speakers with a price tag as much as brand new car. But for me this pair of speaker will give me a long time of good music listening.

I am very happy with the sound of these Elac Debut F6 speakers. The other reviews that I have read are true. Excellent sound quality at an affordable price. No wonder that they rank as "One of the best floor standing speakers of 2017 for under $1,000".

Pros: Impressive tonal range with plenty of power for a medium to large size room.

Cons: None

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have been using these speakers for a week or so. I am exceptionally happy with their performance so far. The highs are crisp, the mids are clear, and the lows resonate without being punchy. I listen to most types of music and these speakers handle them well. They provide a Soundstage where each instrument is easy to locate. I would recommend them.

Pros: Great sound. Ease of connection. Doesn't require a perfect listening environment to shine.

Cons: None so far.

Great speakers and a nice price.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Late last year I began upgrading my audio rig, new DAC, new tube pre-amp and-after 30 years of a satellite-style speaker setup-new speakers. I'm a pretty eclectic listener, a lot of jazz, indie, classical as well as rock, even the occasional hip-hop. After reading many positive reviews and getting supporting feedback from the experts at Crutchfield, I went with the ELAC Debut F6s. The speakers sound great. I'm hearing things I don't remember hearing before. Smooth highs and midrange and the bass is clean and tight with a presence my old sub never had. I couldn't be more pleased.

Pros: Great sound at a very reasonable price.

Cons: I haven't found any.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Wow. I am an old time sound man, 63 years old. Just now updating my last sound set up bought 38 years ago. Just could not afford to update any sooner with work, family etc. So today it can be difficult to check out any kit since there are almost no sound stores around. You have to do your research and a lot has changed since I last did sound work. I read a lot about these F6s and decided to give them a try. I am driving these with a new Yamaha RS700 receiver with 100 watts per channel. The result-Wow!!!! The speakers sound very good for their price. Highs are good without being too shrill, midrange is clear and the bass is clean and present. Since these speakers are triple rear ported, placement is very important. At first I had these 2 feet from the wall and they lacked presence. Then I moved them to 1 foot from the wall and with a little toe in and they came to life. I also put in about +4dB of bass and these sound like floor speakers should sound, lots of presence, clean, and a wide range of frequency response. When I put some power into them, the sound is so clean that the hears don't hurt. All my music, rock, jazz, folk, and of course the Beatles sound great. With rock at higher volumes, these almost sound like some the sound stage speakers that I had build and experienced. Overall these sound way ahead of their price at all sound levels.

Pros: Great range, clean sound, medium size towers, lot of sound and speaker for the money

Cons: Not really a con, because of their triple rear ported design, make sure these are placed close to a wall

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Just got these f6's today and they are amazing. Songs I've heard a thousand times feel new again. I can hear so much more in the recordings that I've never heard before. It's easier to hear each separate instrument as well. I'm using a Sansui SR-525 turntable through a Sansui Solid State 4000 reciever. Both were manufactured in the early 1970s so I can tell you these speakers work very well with vintage gear. Over all they are fantastic speakers and well worth the money.

Pros: Amazing sound quality. Affordable audiophile gear.

Cons: None

Can hear it all

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great sound, surprisingly crisp, can hear every instrument. Quite good enough to stand alone. Read a lot of reviews on many speakers and listened to a variety from different brands. I took a chance, bought these and glad I did. As far as the case goes,it looks very good. Fake wood doesn't cut it for me.

Pros: Excellent sound in all ranges

Cons: None

I have had the ELACs for about 2 months. They are replacing my beloved Magneplanar 1.6s. The Maggies need a LOT of room, and simply cannot be made to work in my new house. One thing about the Maggies is their uncanny ability to disappear within the soundstage. I was delighted to witness the ELACs do this disappearing act as well. Amazing. I could go on and on about the sound of these jewels, but allow me to say that the highs are clear and extremely dynamic and the bass is taught and punchy. No need for a sub here, at least not for me. Mid-range sounds such as female voice are great as well, close to the Maggies, in fact. Stevie Ray Vaughn's "Couldn't Stand the Weather" is simply mesmerizing. WOW! I'm using these in a system I've been building/developing for decades - C-J tubed preamp, monster Onkyo (M-508) power amp, and (kinda) high-end vinyl. I sincerely NEVER thought I could live with such affordable loudspeakers, but these babies "ain't goin' nowhere." Bottom line: I haven't had this much fun listening to my system in a long, long time.

Pros: Amazingly good sound Price Look great Small footprint

Cons: Binding posts require creativity in using some cables Avoid bananas

ELAC Debut F6 speakers

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I chose Crutchfield to buy my speakers from, primarily because of the confidence they gave me during the pre-purchase phase. I felt like they would/will back me up 100% if there are any problems. While my F6's are still breaking-in, they are sounding excellent. I've even enjoyed records over the past couple of days that I had been considering selling. I may update again, regarding specific SQ characteristics that I hear. I am an audiophile with a good set of ears, although my amp and some equipment is not currently of the caliber that it will be, as previously. Cosmetically, I could not disagree more with a recent review that I saw on Amazon regarding the Elac Debut's cabinet appearance. At this price point, while the cabinets obviously could not be finished off like a piece of fine furniture, they still look great! The cabinet-look, is very modern dark gray in color. To me, the finish does not look as if the designers were trying hard to emulate wood. This usually turns out very bad, regardless of the product. Instead, Mr Jones and company gave these an attractive satin gloss almost metallic type of appearance. After removing the grills (recommended) and throwing a ceiling spotlight or two on these babies, they look killer. Designer, Andrew Jones, appropriately put the "beef" into his drivers. I am hearing sounds and space on records that I had not noticed before with some quality B&W and LSA speakers. These are excellent speakers at an awesome price.

Features

Three-Way Driver Design: The Elac Debut F6 floorstanding loudspeaker features a three-way driver design with a 1" tweeter, one 6.5" midrange drive, two 6.5" bass woofers, and a 100Hz/3000Hz crossover network. The tweeter, midrange driver, and woofers have been custom designed by Andrew Jones to deliver an exceptional audio experience that can't be delivered with typical off-the-shelf parts.

  • Cloth Dome Tweeter w/ Wave Guide: The Elac Debut F6 features a 1" cloth dome tweeter with a custom-designed waveguide with a deep spheroid profile. This waveguide design is utilized to improve directivity control and shield the tweeter from cabinet diffraction.
  • Woven-Aramid Fiber Woofers: The floorstanding speaker features three 6.5" woven aramid-fiber cone woofers (1 midrange driver/2 bass woofers) with rubber surround, oversized magnet, and vented pole piece. Woven aramid fiber offers a superior stiffness-to-weight ratio and damping over common polypropylene or paper cones. The added strength allows more flexibility in design to achieve a smoother, extended frequency response.
  • Custom Crossover: A custom nine-element crossover (100Hz/3,000Hz) with audio-grade components is implemented to ensure smooth transition between the tweeter, midrange driver, and bass woofers.

Bass Reflex MDF Cabinet: The Elac Debut F6 floorstanding loudspeaker uses a bass reflex cabinet with three rear-firing flared ports for greater efficiency and bigger bass response. The tweeter and midrange driver are isolated from the rest of the speaker cabinet. The cabinet is made of MDF (Medium Density Fiberboard) with two horizontal braces to strengthen and stiffen the cabinet, helping minimize unwanted vibrations that can discolor music or movie content. The MDF outer walls of the cabinet are covered with a textured vinyl black finish. A detachable cloth grille is included.

5-Way Binding Posts: The Elac Debut F6 floorstanding loudspeaker is fitted with a set of 5-way binding-post terminals which will accept bare-wire (up to 10AWG), pin-connectors, spade-lugs, and banana plugs (single or dual).

Rubber or Spike Feet: The Elac Debut F6 floorstanding loudspeaker features integrated rubber feet for safe placement on hardwood, laminate, vinyl, and tile floors. Four spike feet are also included for secure placement on carpeted flooring. The spikes screw into the bottom of the speaker's rubber feet and add approximately 0.875" of height to the speaker.

Note: There is a pre-installed safety clip on the back of the speaker cabinet for securing the floorstanding speaker to a wall to prevent tip-over. Wall-mount hook, screws, and cord are all sold separately and can be found at your local hardware store.

Applications: The Elac Debut F6 floorstanding loudspeaker can be used in a 2ch stereo application, or used as your front speakers and/or rear surround speakers in a multichannel home theater application.

  • 2Ch Stereo or Front Speaker Placement:  For optimum stereo imaging, place the speakers so that an equilateral triangle is created between the speakers your main listening position. You can also angle ("toe in") the speakers towards the listening position to gain a more focused central image.
  • Rear Surround Placement: In a 5.1channel surround setup, avoid placing the speakers forward of your listening position. The speakers should be spread apart wider than the front speakers.
Note: In either application, the speaker should be placed 1' to 2' away from boundaries such as wall and corners. Close proximity to a side or rear wall will enhance bass performance, but being too close may result in bass that is unnatural.

Elac Debut Series: The Elac Debut series family of loudspeakers consists of two bookshelf speakers, two floorstanding speaker, a center-channel speaker, a Dolby Atmos enabled speaker, and two powered subs.

The ELAC speakers sound great - very neutral, uncolored. One caveat: with the Marantz producing 50- ish watts at 6 ohms, if you like to listen loud, you may want something with higher sensitivity. [ PROFILE  Apr 10, 2017 ]
I'm using them with my Sansui au555a amplifier and sounds amazing. I think they would sound great with almost anything. [ Jack  Apr 08, 2017 ]
Tony, I shouldn't even answer this question as I am not an expert on audio things. I can tell you I paired this with a 2 channel Yamaha RS700 and they sound fantastic, far better than anything on the floor in Best Buy or other box stores. Your amp is lower power but within the range of the speakers. Call crutch field that's what I did you won't be disappointed. [ TERRY L  Apr 08, 2017 ]
It would but unfortunately due to the 45W (8 ohms), 60W (4 ohms) rating of the Marantz, you would not be taking full advantage of the 3 way Elac F6. I pair them with a Yamaha Aventage A760 and they sound awesome.. [ Ashis  Apr 08, 2017 ]
