Our take on the Marshall Stanmore

Marshall built the Stanmore to resemble their guitar amps — and the resemblance goes beyond just looks. This powered speaker delivers solid, no-nonsense sound that remains clear and undistorted even at maximum volume. And it features a top-mounted brushed-brass control panel with three smooth-motion knobs and a sturdy power switch that are classic Marshall.

Connections, old and new

The Stanmore has a stereo minijack input for your portables. But this is Marshall. So you also get a stereo minijack cable that looks like a vintage guitar coiled cable. Into vinyl? The Stanmore also has stereo RCA connectors so you can hook up your turntable with built-in stereo preamp, or other audio component.

Quality sound and build

The system has built-in Bluetooth with high-performance aptX® audio coding, which lets you stream near-CD quality sound from compatible portable devices. And of course the Stanmore works with regular Bluetooth, for use with all smartphones and tablets.

Inside the Stanmore's sturdy case are two 3/4” dome tweeters and a brawny 5-1/4” woofer. Each speaker is powered by its own Class D amplifier, ensuring clarity and rich details in your music.

Fantastic BT Speaker

Setup a snap, connectivity always fast, looks great and sounds awesome.

Pros: Nothing I don't like about it now that I own it

Cons: A little pricier than some others with comparable sound quality

Setup a breeze. Music highs are crisp , bass has punch. No distortion at high levels. Just clean sound pinched out. Controls are probably the best in industry. They have the retro on off Switch from the old days [ toggle ]. For the price actually sounds beter than bang and olufson I previously had purchased. Only drawback no app for remote. But if you don't mind that this is speaker for you. I have been through a lot of speaker Aiwa, bang and olifson, and riva And if you want a compact speaker for your bedroom this is the one O

Pros: I have heard of Marshall mostly because of musical products they sell. I had purchased the riva turbo which is a fantastic speaker, only con not enough power. The Marshall stanmore can be summed up in three words smooth as silk. Highs, bass, and plenty of power. Controls are awesome. r

Cons: None

Doesn't work with current generation Apple products

Cody from Lawrenceburg, KY on 4/27/2017

Wow, I bought this speaker and it worked great while my iphone had iOS 9 on it. After updating to iOS 10 the blue tooth no longer works. It still works fine with my iOS 9 ipad... Apple says that this is Marshall's fault for making a speaker that doesn't have firmware update capability and I agree with them. Marshall says that they aren't responsible for future proofing their devices against iOS updates... which is only true if they don't plan to continue to sell the things! So basically, I have a EXPENSIVE Marshall amp shaped brick taking up space on shelf. If you have an iphone, which I'm certain that many of you do, then DO NOT BUY THIS!

Pros: Great sound

Cons: Doesn't work after iOS 10 update

Guilty pleasure.

Thus far, the Stanmore is performing better than I expected, which is good. It does seem to be tuned to the particularities of Bluetooth sources. That's no surprise since it's a Bluetooth speaker. It does a brilliant job of handing FM signals. It sounds like quality PA system in that regard.

Pros: It's a handsome devil. It seems to be well built. It brings back many fond memories from the 70's and 80's.

Cons: It could benefit from a remote. The on/off switch could be a little less hardcore authentic amp, and have a more subtle click.

My son was looking for a sound system for his room and everything he got just wasn't up to snuff, our main home system is mostly Bose sound equipment. He went through a number of small portable systems and they never produced the sound he wanted. He was using my Bose L1 compact in his room, but every time I had a small show or presentation for the L1 we had to disconnect the system, pack it and load it in the car. So, I got him the Stanmore for Christmas. He loved it. It doesn't sound like mom and dad's old classic rock sound stuff. Its got its own great sound quality and perfect for the music he listens to and the sources he uses: 1/8 " TRS aux, stereo RCA, optical sound and bluetooth. The sound is clear and present, and altogether sparkly, just like my old Marshall 30 watt tube combo with Strat and Les Paul. All the other sound systems he tried had audible high end distortion, weak bass control, muddy mids, and disturbingly audible equalizer and phasing problems. Stanmore is small and portable, a little weighty (just like a Marshall should be). I walk in his room and the sound is pounding out that strange electronic sounds/electronic percussion/vocal mechanic/minor chord stuff he likes to listens to, his ipad sitting on the Stanmore. Solid bass, clear mids and sparkly highs, what a great sound. Makes me feel like Bose is really more suited to NPR talk of the nation or Prairie Home Companion (just kidding). No battery and really well-built.

Trusted Quality, Vintage Look, Modern technology & Sound!!!

Sprumford from Clifton Park, NY on 1/9/2017

I finally fired up the Marshall "Stanmore" Wireless Speaker that I bought myself for Christmas. Words that immediately came to mind were, "Wow!", "Sweet!", and "Holy Moly!" I'm not sure what power problems the last fella who reviewed this speaker was having..... but I suspect he didn't have the volume turned up on his device. The Marshall Stanmore has copious amounts of power! I'm cranking Led Zeppelin's "The Ocean". The volume is all the way up on my iPhone, the volume on the Marshall is less than 3 out of 10 and the sound is filling my great room with ease! The Marshall Stanmore wireless speaker is simply awesome. You can't beat the coolness factor of the vintage design, resembling the legendary Marshall amps we've grown up admiring. The speaker has a nice weight to it and the quality is obvious. No cheap plastics here! The Stanmore has separate Bass and Treble nobs, a feature I'm loving and not used to having on a wireless speaker. Other than the obvious Bluetooth connectivity, there are also two other input locations. On the top, there's an input for a 3.5mm jack and on the back there's Left and Right RCA inputs. The Marshall "Stanmore" is the perfect mid sized wireless speaker for any home. Trusted quality, vintage looks, modern technology, and rich stellar sound! What more could you possibly want? **Remember** This is NOT portable and requires a regular 120V household outlet. If you need portablility, check out the Marshall "Stockwe

Pros: Great Value Looks like a vintage Marshall amp Separate Bass & Treble knobs The Sound is Rich, Full, and Powerful

Cons: None.......Although I'd love a choice between the gold tone or perhaps a silver tone.

Easy Set Up, Big Sound, Great Looking,

Rick from Montgomery, AL on 10/5/2016

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have been wanting a good quality blue tooth speaker to have out on my patio when the weather is nice. For over a year I have been using another device to play Pandora, IHeart Radio, or my own playlists while I am outside, but I really felt the need for something with a bigger sound. The Crutchfield website offers a bewildering array of blue tooth products, so I picked up the phone and called a customer specialist and asked for a recommendation. She was very patient with me and we discussed the pros and cons of various products. After hearing her advice, I made my purchase and two days later the Marshall Stanmore was delivered. I couldn't be happier with it. Very easy to set up and connect to blue tooth sources. It has a great sound, plenty loud enough for me-- and for my neighbors to hear as well if they want to--my wife is frequently admonishing me to turn it down. It also looks great and several visitors have commented that they really like the retro design. It looks like an old-fashioned guitar amp from the 50s and 60s. I have the cream color. Come by my house most nights between 6 pm and 8 pm and you'll see me out there, sipping a Martini or drinking beer, maybe reading a book, maybe grilling burgers, and listening to rock and roll on this awesome speaker. PS-- I like this so much I'm buying another one as a wedding present for my business partner.

Pros: Sound, Looks, Set-up

Cons: No battery. It needs an AC outlet.

Great Speaker; looks and performance!

This speaker was recommended by the customer support rep, he couldn't have been more right!

Pros: Power, style, ease of operation.

Cons: Needs two hands to carry, no handle. Bluetooth occasionally disconnects if the energy saver switch is on.

Love it!!

Great Looking, But Lacks Sound Quality

Rindy 18 from Rome, NY on 6/2/2016

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is one cool looking speaker. It is easy to set up and easy to use. It has plenty of input options. The only thing I did not care for is the lack of power. I have a small Jabra Bluetooth speaker that can put out as much sound as this unit. I was looking for the "Big" sound of Marshall, but it is not there. I would recommend this for a casual listener. It looks great and is built very well.

Pros: Multiple input options Great looking Beautifully built, high quality construction The brown color is rich and elegant I would highly recommend this speaker for the casual listener!

Cons: It lacks the power and the sound that a speaker of this size should be able to put out. It don't recommend this speaker for the person who wants to really crank it up and expects a "Big" sound.

Q & A

Customer Q&A

Crutchfield asked
Why did you buy this?

Best sounding home bluetooth hifi speaker. Fantastic clarity and base response even at low volume. No distortion at higher volumes detected. Classy retro appeal. High end control components-volume, bass, treble pots and on-off toggle switch. Pairing with a Denon DCD 50SP cd player. Ted R Sr., Pasadena, CA [ TEODORICO  Aug 01, 2017 ]
Great sound and good looks! [ Georgina  Dec 14, 2016 ]
Actually, I had been looking for a Bluetooth speaker and the Salesman at Best Buy couldn't say enough good things about this Marshall product. That was 6 months ago. They no longer carry them at Best Buy. My Beau said you can probably get a deal on Crutchfield. I was happy to see the speaker I like at $70 off. Sold to the indecisive girl and in a vintage brown that was an unexpected surprise! Merry Christmas to me. Thank you~ [ Claudine  Dec 12, 2016 ]
Good reviews and color goes with furniture [ John  Jul 24, 2016 ]

2 questions already asked

I think that with an auxiliary or line output from the receiver it would work. There is no phono input so you would need a phono preamp with a line or aux output for the Marshall. [ CHARLES  Jul 06, 2017 ]
The Stanmore has several inputs, and hooks up via bluetooth, so it could hook to a record player or receiver if those have the specific inputs the Stanmore has. *Goes and checks* It has Bluetooth, and two different types of speaker connections. [ John T.  Jul 03, 2017 ]
If you have a optical input or an analog ( red and white input) the answer is yes. [ GREGORY  Jul 03, 2017 ]
Marshall built their Stanmore Bluetooth speaker to resemble their guitar amps, but this is solely a Bluetooth audio speaker system and wouldn't handle connecting a guitar directly. I hope that helps. My Bio: [ Larry  May 18, 2016 ]  Staff
