About the Kenwood KDC-2022

Robert Ferency-Viars
Kenwood built an impressive list of features into its attractively-priced KDC-2022 CD receiver. Its detachable face boasts an easy-to-see backlit LCD display and easy-to-use controls. The powerful internal amp (22 watts RMS/50 peak x 4 channels) stays clean, even when the music's gettin' down and dirty.

System Q Sound Control whips the sound into shape with six preset tone curves and three tone controls (bass, treble, and midrange). Its Speaker Setting function lets you choose from three settings to tailor the KDC-2022's output to the speakers in your vehicle. Source tone memory stores a System Q setting for each source (CD, FM, AM, and CD changer).

Kenwood's CR-2 tuner does a great job of hauling in and holding your favorite stations, whether you're in Montana or the middle of Manhattan. If you're into building a system, the KDC-2022 will control a Kenwood CD changer and includes two sets of preamp outputs to simplify adding outboard amplifiers. Plus, Kenwood throws in a wireless remote control so you can make system changes without taking your eyes off the road.

Features

Integrated Quad 1-bit D/A Converters: The KDC-2022 is equipped with four Digital-to-Analog converters, two for each channel, which improve playback sound quality, musical detail and resolution. Using two D/A converters for each channel cuts distortion by half.

System Q Sound Control: Six EQ curves are preset into memory, allowing you to recall the best preset EQ curve for different types of music. The preset curves are named "Flat", "Rock", "Top 40", "Pops", "Jazz", and "Easy", and are displayed as SQ-1 through SQ-6. Each preset has its own bass, middle, and treble level settings.

Speaker Settings: The Speaker Setting function tailors the System Q Sound Control settings according to the type of speakers in your vehicle. You may select a Speaker Setting of "SP F" (flat), "SP O." (for OEM factory speaker systems), "SP 6" (for systems with 6" and 6"x9" speakers), or "SP 5" (for systems with 4" and 5" speakers).

Dual Information Display: When in the Tuner mode, you can choose to display the clock at the same time as the frequency of the tuned station. In the CD mode, the track information is displayed, and you can switch between the elapsed time of the track and the clock display.

Source Tone Memory: This feature allows you to store System Q bass, middle and treble tone settings for each source (CD, FM, AM and Changer).

Attenuator With Smooth Volume Return: This unit's attenuator button allows you to quickly lower the volume by a preset level with the press of a button. When the attenuator button is pressed again, the Smooth Volume Return feature gradually increases the volume to the original level, eliminating the jarring change in volume.

CR-2 Advanced Tuner: This unit uses Kenwood's CR-2 Advanced tuner for clear radio reception. You can choose one of three tuning modes: Auto 1 (seek tuning), Auto 2 (cycles through and tunes the selected band's preset stations only with each button press), or Manual.

Clean Reception System Circuit (CRSC): This circuit controls multi-path distortion by reducing stereo separation. As stereo separation is reduced, multi-path has less effect on the radio signal, improving reception in areas with tall buildings and mountains. The CRSC circuit can be turned on or off.

Last Position Memory: If the unit is shut off or switched to the tuner mode while a CD is playing, the next time CD is selected as the source, playback will resume from the point where it left off.

Disabled System Indicator: A red indicator will blink on the unit after the faceplate is removed, warning potential thieves. This feature can be turned On or Off.

Remote Control: The KDC-2022 comes with the RC-410 wireless remote control, a 22-button full-function remote with a 10-key number pad. It is powered by a CR-2025 battery (supplied). The dimensions of the remote are: L=4.915", W=2.162", D=0.559".

Changer Controls

Compatibility: This unit is directly compatible with Kenwood changers manufactured in 1998 or later. If the changer has an O-N switch, the switch will need to be set to the "N" position. If you have a Kenwood changer manufactured before 1998, you will need the KCA-S210A switching adapter. Changers manufactured before 1994 require the CA-DS100 converter cord and the KCA-S210A switching adapter.

Changer Controls: In addition to basic disc navigation features, this unit has the following changer controls: direct disc access (using the remote), direct track access (using the remote), track intro scan, track repeat, disc repeat, disc random, and all disc random.

Note

Display Illumination/Clock Display: When the unit is in Standby mode, the face/button illumination is "keyed". In addition, while the unit is in Standby mode, the Clock Display can be turned on or off. When the Clock Display is turned on and the unit is in Standby mode, the Clock Display is also "keyed". Pressing and holding the source button turns the unit off completely.
