Reverse with confidence

"Why do I need a camera to back up when I have mirrors?" Yep, I was one of those guys, but now I'm a total backup camera convert. For such a tiny addition to my vehicle, it can make a big difference in how I drive. No parking spot is too challenging. And Audiovox's ACA800 backup cam delivers everything you need to be a parking pro too.

The big view

This compact camera delivers a wide 150-degree horizontal view enhanced with parking lines so you know exactly how much wiggle room you have behind you. And don't be afraid of backing up in a parking garage or at night, as the ACA800 is enhanced to give you a crisp picture, even in low light. It can be surface-mounted or license plate-mounted.

Or use it for a front view

Audiovox gives you a mirrored mode in case you want to mount this on the front of your vehicle and keep an eye on high curbs or other scuff-makers. Wherever you mount the camera, you'll just run the included video cable from the camera to the monitor in your dash, connect the power cables, and you're in business.

Installing this camera yourself? Here's what you should know.

What does it do? Unless otherwise noted, a backup camera is only intended for use backing up your vehicle. (If you require a front-view or constant rear-view camera, check for that capability.)

What tools and supplies will I need? A panel tool, a wire cutter/stripper, a soldering iron, and a rosin-core solder with heat shrink tubing are recommended, along with whatever tools are needed to remove the radio from the dash.

How much wiring is required? Wiring instructions vary from camera to camera. Some cameras have power wiring that can only be connected near the radio. Others let you power the camera at compatible reverse lights. In all cases, the camera must be wired for power and ground, the camera's video output must be connected to the radio/monitor, and the radio/monitor must be connected to a reverse trigger in your vehicle. Some radio replacement interfaces supply a reverse trigger wire for the radio -- using that wire to power your camera will damage the interface.

Will the included video cable be long enough? You'll need to route the camera's video cable from its mounting location outside your vehicle into your vehicle's cabin and all the way to the screen in the dash. This often requires drilling a small hole in your vehicle or filing some metal and or plastic. You'll also need to estimate the length of cable needed to run from the camera to the dash, which will not be a straight shot. Each camera's cable length is listed.

Features

Backup Camera: The VOXX ACA800 backup camera features a high-performance HD CCD image sensor with a minimum illumination of 0.1 Lux for excellent visibility in bright or lowlight. Its wide-angle lens provides a 150° horizontal viewing angle that offers great visibility.

Note: This rearview camera is meant as a back-up aid only. You should never solely rely on the camera when backing-up. In addition to using the rearview camera, always look behind you to make sure everything is clear.

Configuration Options: The ACA800 can be used as a backup camera with a mirror image or front camera with a normal image. It can also display parking assist lines. To configure these camera functions, two wire loops are provided on the camera cable (about 6" from the female RCA jack) that can be cut or left uncut to accommodate these options:

  • Mirrored or Normal Mode: By default, the ACA800 is setup as a backup camera. To use it as a front camera, cut the thin blue wire loop on the cable that is attached to the camera.
  • Park Assist Lines: By default, the camera will display park assist lines to help you back into a parking spot. To turn off the park assist lines, cut the thin green wire loop on the cable that is attached to the camera.

Composite Video Output: The VOXX ACA800 backup camera is outfitted with a composite video connector (RCA) which makes it compatible with virtually any in-dash receiver with integrated video monitor and a composite video camera input. The total length of the camera's video cable is 22'.

Waterproof (IP67): The VOXX ACA800 features a waterproof (IP67) housing to protect it from the elements. It's totally protected against dust and protected against the effect of immersion at 1 meter for the duration of 30 minutes.

Mounting Options: The VOXX ACA800 backup camera includes a license plate bracket which mounts behind your vehicle's license plate frame. A surface-mount bracket is included, if you cannot use the license plate mounting bracket. Mounting hardware is included for the installation of either bracket. Both brackets allow you to adjust the up and down angle of the camera.

Note: The license plate bracket is designed to work best on vehicles that have a license plate located at the center and above the bumper. If your vehicle has a plate location that is offset to the left side, right side, or your plate is located under the bumper, then the surface-mount bracket is the better choice.

Power and Ground Wires: The VOXX ACA800 features a 7' accessory power wire (red) and a 7' ground wire (black); the 22' composite video cable aslo provides an accessory power wire. The power and ground wires will need to be hardwired. Power can be obtained from your vehicle's reverse light circuit or from the +12V accessory wire of your aftermarket stereo (if applicable). The ground will need to be connected to your vehicle's metal chassis.

Note: Some vehicles with LED style tail lights will require the camera be connected to an accessory power source, as the tail light circuit is not designed to power other devices.

Q
Will this fit an xav-ax6000?
steve  Feb 29, 2024
1 answer
A
Greetings Steve. Thank you for your question. This camera and most all the backup cameras we have are universal. They connect to a touch screen stereo via composite video cable (RCA). Any touch screen stereo we currently have can connect up to this camera.
hogan  Mar 02, 2024 (Staff)
Q
Will the plug fit a new 2024 Toyota Tundra?
john  Feb 06, 2024
1 answer
A
Greetings John. Thank you for your question. This camera is universal for connection to an aftermarket stereo. Factory cameras and radio systems have proprietary connections, so you have to buy a compatible camera from the dealership in most cases. At this time we do not have a backup camera that can work on your 2024 Tundra factory radio screen.

Q
Does the camera have to be mounted centered or can it be off to one side?
david carter  Nov 07, 2023
1 answer
A
Greetings David. Thank you for your question. If mounted off to one side, you lose the on center image. Perhaps the mounting bracket can be bent a tad to get you close.

Unfortunately, Audiovox has not published this information for their retailers.

Q
How about night time use? Night vision capable?
joel  Aug 01, 2023
1 answer
A
This Audiovox ACA800 has a clear picture and great performance, but it does not have any specific night vision capabilities Joel. Our universal backup cameras will not have any true night vision, but you can use the Boyo VTL17IRTJ in the link below that has an infrared filter to aid in low light use! https://www.crutchfield.com/p_707V17IRTJ/Boyo-VTL17IRTJ.html

How many pins is the female black connector coming out of the camera? 4 or 5? Is there a notch in the top? Also what is the diameter? Can someone send me a screenshot of the end of theirs?

Q
If mounted on the bottom of the license plate, the camera would be upside down. Will it rotate to right side up?
j  Jan 08, 2022
2 answers
A
No, I don't think it will.
ben  Feb 03, 2022
A
If I am not mistaken, I believe the whether the rotation/orientation of the picture can be changed will be determined by the display screen and not the camera

Will this work on a 2016 BMW 3series with no navigation? There is a display screen for car information. But no navigation option installed.

I'm not sure if this would work, if your OEM BMW display has an extra video IN port than it may work. I do not know if it would auto switch to the reverse view when you put the vehicle in reverse.

I installed this on my 04 Sequoia. No problem at this time. Question is: Is there a way to make parking lines wider so I know when car is about to hit objects on the sides?
orlando  Jul 07, 2021

A
You can adjust the parking lines to be wider from your head unit by going into Settings/System/Camera Settings/Parking Assist Guide Adjust. Once you are in the Parking Assist Guide Adjust you can use the arrows to adjust the parking lines. Not sure if it will work or show up for your head unit and installation. Good luck.

Q
I am thinking of purchasing the Sony XAV-AX7000. Will this work well with this head unit? WIll it plug directly into the HU? Thanks.
larry  Jun 16, 2021
1 answer
A
This backup camera will work with that Sony receiver! It's video cable will plug directly into the rear view camera input. There is no place to plug the camera's power wiring into the receiver so that must be connected elsewhere. We give lifetime technical support on items purchased from us and they can help with finding the best place to connect the power wiring for the camera. We include their toll free number on the order invoice to make it easier to reach them

Q
What are the red wires at each end of the RCA/video cable for? The instructions say the red trigger wire goes to the reverse light wire, the black wire goes to ground, and the RCAs go to the camera and camera input. I don't see anything in the instructions about what to do with the red wires at each end of the video cable. Thanks!
charles  Jun 09, 2021
2 answers
A
That red wire is for head units that do not have a dedicated rear/backup camera wire. If your head unit has one dont use that red wire if u do not have a dedicated backup camera wire (purple) then attach that wire to the hot wire of ur rear reverse light.
steve  Jun 09, 2021

Worked perfectly for my 2007 Suburban, so I imagine it would work for your truck, too.

It reached in my 99 Suburban, so I think it will probably be long enough.

This unit installed on a pick up truck that stays outside at night was not affected by temperatures in to the low teens last winter if that is any help. That's been my personal experience for what it is worth.
everette  Nov 03, 2020
A
Yes; it does. Michigan Winters. Keep in mind that the bracket is metal so you will either paint the bracket every 2 years or paint with a good coat or 2 of rustolium to keep from rusting when it's new. The camera is good though.

Q
Can you turn the parking grid lines off?
christopher  Aug 13, 2020
2 answers
A
There are two very thin wires looped off of the camera connector. One is green and the other blue. Cutting the green wire removes the parking lines. Cutting the blue wire will reverse the image.
david  Nov 24, 2020
A
I like the grid lines, so haven't attempted to turn them off. But I don't think it's an option.

Q
I want to install a camera on a 2012 Chevy HD 2500 to use mostly to assist in backing to hitch to a trailer. Will it be useful for this and what is a good option for a monitor if neither GPS nor audio upgrade is desired?
david  Apr 20, 2020
1 answer
A
I have it mounted above my license plate on an 06 Dodge. Great view of my hitch close up. The higher you can mount it the better the view for depth perception but the license mount still works well for hitching up. I upgraded my audio and thus use that for my monitor So I am no help there. The wiring was just barely long enough to reach with a long bed crew cab so don't get to playful with your routing if youre truck is a yacht

Q
Anyone know if this camera will work with a Kenwood DDX375BT?
roger  Mar 25, 2020
1 answer
A
It absolutely will work! You will need a few wire taps for power, ground, and reverse triggers, but every camera will require that!
thomas  Apr 15, 2020 (Staff)
Q
with this camera, I just bought the Sony head unit XAV-AX1000. Does it just plug the camera to the back of the head unit, or does it still need to tap into the reverse lights? This is for a 2013 GMC Sierra
dennis  Mar 15, 2020
1 answer
A
Camara does plug into back of head unit at the camera input. My head unit allowed to turn the camera on when desired by pressing button on the unit or to automatically come on when in reverse. I chose to have it come on only when in reverse which did require tapping into one of the reverse light wires. This is easy to do. Turning on manually from head unit does not require tapping into wire. The only time consuming part is just running and securing the camera wire from back of vehicle to the front.
ray  Mar 15, 2020
Q
How well does this gauge the width of a given vehicle? For example I drive an 08 suburban which is pretty wide and when installed on the back center, does the camera calibrate for the width of the vehicle so it can accurately guide into tight spaces based on the driving lines and such?
william  Feb 09, 2020

A
I have this on a 2012 Subaru Legacy. I does have lines in display and you may be able to turn these off. I think this would work fine when used in conjunction with side & rear view mirrors.
thomas  Feb 21, 2020
A
Its centered when it's on the center of the tag.. the view and everything is a little better than the factory backup camera that's on my 2013 suburban..
dale  Feb 21, 2020
A
I mounted this with my '04 Silverado rear license plate and can't see the sides of the truck. What it is helpful for is to see things and to determine how close you are to an object directly behind and less than 180 degrees (like 130 degrees) from the rear bumper. You can't see the sides of the vehicle unless you add cameras on the sides. If your stereo has the 360 degree capability you can add more cameras to see the sides.
chad  Feb 21, 2020
A
I installed this camera on my daughter's 2009 Toyota Sienna and it works just fine for her. The width of that vehicle is more than adequately covered in the view of that camera and allows for a clear view while backing.
robert  Feb 20, 2020
A
It's a static width. The grid fits just inside the lines of a normal sized parking spot so you are still going to have to utilize your side mirrors when backing into tight spaces.
kristopher  Feb 20, 2020
A
I drive a Ford Ranger which is smaller, but it works fine for me in backing up. I don't think the camera view is adjustable but the colored lines on the screen are. I parked on level ground and set some boards on the ground behind me at a certain measurement and adjusted my colored lines accordingly
robert  Feb 20, 2020
Q
How do you install it with the Sony Xav 1000?
mason  Jan 22, 2020
1 answer
A
The only connection to the radio is an RCA connector to the camera input. The other 2 connections for camera power can be made at the tail light.
adam  Jan 22, 2020
Q
Can i install a backup camera on a manual 6 speed?
jennifer robin  Sep 29, 2019
1 answer
A
Thank you for your question! You can install a backup camera on a manual vehicle. The backup camera will require a connection to your vehicles reverse light, which will signal the camera to turn on when in reverse. If you would like to go over your options, and be sure you have all you'll need for your installation, please chat with an Advisor online or by phone at 1-800-324-9695. They will be more than happy to help you out!
