About the BOSS Audio BV960NV

Dominic DeVito

Superb directions and sonic options galore

Taking the scenic route might be a grand idea for a lazy Sunday afternoon, but most of us need to get to our destination as quickly as possible. The BV960NV navigation receiver from BOSS Audio fills out your 4" dash opening as a trusted guide and entertainment center, so you can drive to the music that puts you in the mood you want, rather than just being stressed out about being lost. Boss even includes a wireless remote control so your passengers can get in on the action. This receiver's a tremendous value, too, so you can stop for that extra-fancy coffee along the way without feeling guilty.

A 6.2" touchscreen display

The BV960NV sports a gorgeous, user-friendly monitor, which allows you to see the included maps of the United States (except Hawaii) and Puerto Rico with ease. And you'll have millions of points of interest to choose from when it's time for a break from the road. Pull up audio and video sources through the touchscreen, including digital files stored on USB drives or SD cards, streaming audio from your smartphone, a wired portable MP3 player, and good old-fashioned discs.

Dependable directions

Not only does the Boss provide accurate guidance, it helps you with text-to-speech voice prompts, which announce actual street names at turns. You'll hear "turn left on Cordelia Drive," instead of "take the next left." Lane guidance ensures you'll be in the correct position for your next turn, and you can see realistic views of some highway signs for added assurance.

Bluetooth® calling and music streaming

The BV960NV offers Bluetooth connectivity, so you'll be able to make and take calls using your compatible phone through the stereo. You can talk right through the built-in mic on the front panel, so your callers will hear you clearly. You can stream music from your smartphone, and control basic playback functions with the receiver's touchscreen.

Plenty of connections

The receiver's front-panel slot accommodates your SD card loaded with jams for the long haul, while the front aux in works with portable devices. A front USB input makes it easy to connect a thumb drive full of music, or you can jack a satellite radio tuner or other device into the rear audio/video input. Dedicated inputs on the rear panel accept optional rear-view and front-view cameras so you can get in and out of tight spaces more easily. A composite A/V output lets you send movies or other video content to external video monitors, so you can keep the backseat crew entertained.

Hit the road with your digital media

The BV960NV works with MP3 and WMA files from USB drives and SD cards. A 10-band equalizer lets you tweak the audio settings to suit your tastes, and the full complement of preamp outputs includes a dedicated subwoofer out with low-pass filter and level control.

Bluetooth note: Use of this receiver's Bluetooth features will depend upon your phone's Bluetooth capabilities. Learn more in our article explaining Bluetooth profiles.

You'll need a wired connection to your parking brake to access settings and other features on this receiver. Your parking brake must be connected and set in order to view video on its screen.

Touchscreen + Remote Features

6.2" LCD Touchscreen: Boss BV960NV navigation receiver features a fixed 6.2" widescreen touchscreen LCD monitor. The screen has a resolution of 800 RGB x 480 with 1,152,000 total pixels. This unit has touchscreen controls with interactive video graphics, making menu navigation easy.

  • Wallpaper/Backgrounds: You can choose from 5 preset wallpaper/backgrounds.
  • Clock & Date: You can set and display the date & time.
  • Backlight Brightness: You can adjust the LCD touchscreen monitor's brightness for day and nighttime viewing.

Note: For safety reasons, you cannot view a video source on the built-in LCD screen as long as the vehicle is in motion. In order to display video, the light green wire (attached to rear-chassis) must be hardwired into the vehicle's parking brake light circuit, and the vehicle's parking brake must be engaged.

Start Up Time: The Boss BV960NV has a start up time of approximately 8.1 seconds from Off to an AV Source screen, and a start up time of 21.7 seconds from Off to the Navigation Map screen.

Hard-Key Controls: In addition to the unit's LCD touchscreen controls, the BV960NV also features hard-key controls on the left edge of the screen (including a 3-way rotary audio control).

IR Remote: The Boss BV960NV includes a 39-button IR remote control for complete wireless operation of the navigation receiver.

Optional Steering Wheel Control: The unit features a SWC (steering wheel control) input which lets you keep your vehicle's factory radio steering wheel remote controls when used with an optional Metra, PAC, or Maestro steering wheel control adapter (sold separately).

Onboard Navigation

NDrive Navigation Software: The Boss BV960NV contains map coverage of the United States (except Hawaii) and Puerto Rico with over a million points-of-interest from TomTom; all stored on the pre-installed 8GB microSD card. The BV960NV employs NDrive software for turn-by-turn visual and voice guidance to your selected destination. The software quickly calculates step-by-step directions to any destination available on the included on-screen navigation map.

Note: While the receiver's map database (2015) was judged to be as accurate as possible at the time of its release, a map database can never be 100% accurate. Road information that is maintained in the map databases, such as turn restrictions or road names may change over time.

Map Updates: NDrive offers periodic updates (purchase fees will apply) for data such as roads, new addresses, and other navigational information that will keep the Boss navigation system up to date and provide the best possible experience. For updates and add-on options, please visit NDrive.com.

Note: Currently there are no map updates for this unit and no ETA on any future map updates.

GPS Receiver & Antenna: The Boss BV960NV features a built-in GPS receiver and includes an external GPS antenna which determines vehicle speed and heading changes, along with longitude and latitude information, to accurately determine vehicle heading and position on the system's digital map. The GPS antenna can be mounted inside or outside of the vehicle.

Note: The navigation receiver took approximately 53.1 seconds to calculate directions from Virginia to California. It only took 22.7 seconds to calculate directions from Virginia to Maryland. These tests were done inside the Crutchfield Lab of the Crutchfield Headquarters. Results will vary based on length of calculated route and your surrounding area.

2D or 3D Map: The unit's on-screen 2D or 3D map shows your vehicle's current position (a Green arrow), the recommended route (a violet line), the surrounding map area, and your destination (checkered flag). The on-screen map shows streets, roads, and highways in a way that is similar to how a paper road map show them. A road's width and colors corresponds to their importance, so you can easily tell a freeway from a small street. When navigating a route, the top section of the map screen shows information about your next route maneuver and the next street. When approaching a turn, the map screen will zoom in and raise the view angle to let you easily recognize your maneuver at the next junction. If the next turn is at a distance, it will zoom out and lower the view angle to be flat so you can see the road in front of you. The map also displays data; such as the posted speed limit, your current speed, current time, distance to your destination, time left before you reach your destination, and your arrival time.

Lane Information & Signposts: The Boss BV960NV's navigation map offers helpful lane information and signpost guidance

  • Lane Information: When navigation on multilane roads, it is important to take the appropriate lane in order to follow the recommended route. If lane information is available in the map data, the map screen will display the lanes and their directions using small arrows at the bottom of the map. High lighted arrows represent the lanes you need to take.
  • Signposts: Where additional information is available, signposts substitute arrows. Signposts are displayed at the top of the map. The color and style of the signposts are similar to the real ones you can see above the road or by the roadside, They show the available destinations and the number of the road the lane leads to.

Voice Guidance w/ Text-To-Speech: In addition to graphic directions, the BV960NV provides voice guidance with text-to-speech. You'll get turn-by-turn instructions with the announcement of street names. You can select from English, French, or Spanish languages.

Destination Search: You are able to select a destination by touching an area on the map screen, entering an address, choosing a POI, picking a saved Favorite, or choosing from your recent History.

  • Browse Map: Select a point on the map for your destination by touching the screen.
  • Address: Enter a full address or a part of an address; you can enter Country, State, Town, and or Street.
  • POIs: Search millions of POIs (points-of interest) near you current location, in a city, within a postcode, or around a set of coordinates.
  • Favorites (Home): You can save your favorite addresses (like Home & Work) and POIs for quicker access the next time you are traveling.
  • History: The places that you have set as destinations in the past are automatically stored for easier access.
  • Itinerary: You can select from saved Itineraries and Waypoints.

Routing Options: You can choose how the head unit's navigation system calculates your route by selecting Fastest or Shortest. You can also indicate if you want to use or avoid Toll roads.

Preview Route: Once the unit has calculated the route to your destination, you can preview the turn-by-turn instructions, view the map route, and simulate travel along the route.

Route Alternatives: The NDrive navigation software gives you the option to calculate an alternative route, place a roadblock (if for any reason a part of the route is blocked), avoid part of the route (due to traffic or other info), or re-calculate the original route if you made any changes.

Safety Alerts: The unit's navigation software features visual & audible safety alerts.

  • Speed Limit Alarm: An audible alarm will ring when you exceed the speed limit which you configure; you may choose to turn this feature off.

Q
Is there a way I can still have my steering wheel controls with this system?

Q
Is this item plug and play for 2017 brz?
michael  Nov 27, 2023
1 answer
A
The Boss Audio BV960NV is not plug-and-play Michael, you will need installation accessories for a complete install. This Boss BV960NV receiver will not retain your vehicle settings menu or steering wheel audio control buttons. For install you would need the Metra 95-8912HG dash kit in the first link below, and the Crux SWRSU-38C wiring interface in the second link below. When you pair the install accessories with your radio package you get a nice discount on the parts! The Crux interface retains your Starlink, subwoofer, backup camera, and AUX input. We can make the install easier for you with our ReadyHarness pre-wiring service, but the package is not plug-and-play. If you have any questions, need help deciding which radio and install package is right for you, or need help getting your order placed do not hesitate to call us at 1-800-324-9695 and a live Advisor would be happy to help! https://www.crutchfield.com/p_120958912H/Metra-95-8912HG-Dash-Kit-Gloss-Black.html https://www.crutchfield.com/p_120958912H/Metra-95-8912HG-Dash-Kit-Gloss-Black.html

Yes is does, the data that comes with it is pretty current, but with new roundabouts going in it doesn't recognize changes that have been currently made eventually I'll have to get an update but it's been working great for me hope that helps you

Yes, it works independently.

GPS works on it's own. Maps are pre-installed already, location is shown accurately by putting a 3M Tape antenna on your dashboard. You can't update maps by 'sync' your smartphone.
adrian  Jul 03, 2020
A
The GPS is not dependent on being synced with any outside devices. The system works extremely well, even in Midtown and lower Manhattan where I personally have had issues with the GPS of my iPhone.

Will this hook up to my XM radio?
bobby  Feb 18, 2020

That Boss is not Sirius/XM ready. The only way you would be able to add satellite radio would be by plugging a dock-and-play unit like the Onyx Plus into the AUX input. It will not work with an existing factory XM tuner. https://www.crutchfield.com/I-rET1c290/p_220SXPL1V1/SiriusXM-Onyx-Plus.html

No, it uses a version of Windows. Still, a solid stereo for the price.
james  Dec 05, 2017

No. The Boss. BV960NV is not a Android device. You can't download software. No Google play store. The only thing you can do is remove the sd card that contains the navigation software for update. It is a nice unit. You can load up songs and movies on usb drive and or sd card. It streams from your mobile phone as you play music from your phone or mobile device. It receives calls that's answers automatically or you can set it on manually. As you enter your vehicle it connects automatically to the Boss unit's Bluetooth were it displays your cell's phone log, (contacts, outgoing, incoming and contact list. There are 2 things I don't like about the unit. In daylight there is a glare on the screen that's so bad until it's very hard to see it. The second thing is the program area that tells you the name of the show you are listening and the title othe song etc is too small. I realy hope this info helps you out. PS: the navigation system is real good too. Toney G

Does this support Bluetooth so that I can play music from my phone with no Aux cord, or is it like my old receiver where it can only take and answer phone calls?
filip  May 07, 2017
4 answers
A
I do not believe the Boss BV960 NV has the feature you are referring to. It has the standard Bluetooth function, not aware of anything additional. I would not recommend this product, several months after installation the audio system began functioning intermittently. Sometimes it works for minutes, sometimes hours, sometimes not at all. It appears to be completely random. When you start the vehicle, the power comes on but there is about a 50% chance you will have audio; but even if you do, there is about a 75% chance the audio will suddenly cut off for no apparent reason. I was very happy with the service I received, just not the product.

Does this come with navigation ready to go or do you need to buy a sd card with navigation on it first before the navigation part works?
kyle  Apr 19, 2017
3 answers
A
Navigation is ready to go out of the box. It comes with the GPS mount for either rooftop or dashboard. I chose the dashboard and just ran the cable through the speaker area and behind the dash before installing the head unit. All told the installation took about an hour and a half in my rogue. There's no additional downloading required, though I haven't looked to see if there are any updates on the Boss website that would be of any value. Multiple voices (male and female in various accents and languages) for the speech directions are also available or if the box. Altogether a very solid unit for the price.

greg  Apr 06, 2017

I'm afraid you would not be able to bridge the Boss BV960NV's built-in amplifier down to 2-channels for higher power. You can still connect 2 speakers to the front output channels only, but they would be receiving 20 watts each from the built-in amplifier. If you would like to discuss further, feel free to contact an Advisor directly by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat.

paul r  Dec 31, 2016

It is sort of a rubber door that is connected by a couple of rubber tabs. It doesn't really hinge out and isn't rigid so it isn't likely to be broken from bumping it. If you were to leave a usb cable or dongle in all of the time I don't think that would damage the door in any way.

I love my new Boss. The door port for the aUSB could have been made a little better but with the flexible hing it works just fine. There was one issue I have with the mic, I have to speak a little louder sometimes when the person on the call tells me they can't hear me.
perry  Dec 30, 2016

Just installed this in my wife's vehicle and since she uses an iPod I was concerned about this as well. It appears to be a rubber hinge rather than a plastic one. Seems like it's fairly robust and would hold up to constant usage. Hers will remain open since the iPod stays in the car all the time.

what is the difference between the RCA (rear) and the mini (front) auxiliary input? and will the mini for the front wok with a normal AUX. cable?
aarom  Dec 23, 2016

They're different types of connections for different equipment. Rear RCA connections are more for connecting amps and other components, usually permanently installed. The mini on the front is your typical aux input for your headphone jack on your phone, mp3 player, etc. I only used the aux once because I connect my phone via Bluetooth and that works great.

Q
Will the DVD function work while driving if you install a television in the rear view for kids?
calvin  Jun 20, 2016
2 answers
A
Hello, I should think so. Connect to any video device's video output and connect to a moniter, it will work. Thank you,
toney  Nov 22, 2016
A
The A/V outputs will remain active when the vehicle is in motion so, yes, you can provide audio/video to external, backseat monitors while driving. The unit's built-in parking brake sensor will only prohibit video being displayed on the unit's built-in screen (unless the vehicle is parked). I hope that helps. There is an SD Card slot strictly for navigation. There is also another slot right underneath for another SD Card that you could put your own music on and then insert the card. (That SD card isn't included)
