Features

Dolby Atmos Loudspeaker: The Elac Debut DA42 has been specifically designed to be used as the "elevation" or "height" speaker in a Dolby Atmos system from 5.1.2 to 7.1.4. The DA42 's constructions & performance characteristics follow the strict guidelines set by Dolby in order to deliver a true Dolby Atmos experience. The Elac Debut DA42 fires sound toward the ceiling which is then reflected to the main listening area to create the height information embedded into Dolby Atmos soundtrack.

Dolby Atmos: Dolby Atmos takes surround sound to a completely new level, by adding the third dimension of height to the two dimensional front/back left/right 5.1 or 7.1 sound mix. In Dolby Atmos, the floor speakers create the sound "bed" and the Dolby Atmos enabled elevation speakers are fed a separate, discrete signal to move "sound objects" around the room with pinpoint accuracy. The effect is totally convincing, and really elevates the home cinema experience to new heights.

Note: A Dolby Atmos AV receiver or processor (sold separately) will be required for Dolby Atmos surround.

Two-Way Coaxial Driver Design: The Elac Debut DA42 Dolby Atmos enabled loudspeaker features a two-way coaxial driver design with a 0.5" tweeter, 4" woofers, and a 2,000Hz crossover. The tweeter is positioned in the center of the woofer cone. Both the tweeter and woofer have been custom designed by Andrew Jones to deliver an exceptional audio experience that can't be delivered with typical off-the-shelf parts

  • Polymer Dome Tweeter: The Debut DA42 features a coaxially mounted 0.5" polymer dome tweeter for crisp, clear highs.
  • Woven-Aramid Fiber Woofer: The Dolby Atmos enabled speaker features a single 4" woven aramid-fiber cone woofer with rubber surround, oversized magnet, and vented pole piece. Woven aramid fiber offers a superior stiffness-to-weight ratio and damping over common polypropylene or paper cones. The added strength allows more flexibility in design to achieve a smoother, extended frequency response.
  • Custom Crossover: A custom seven-element crossover (2,000Hz) with audio-grade components is implemented to ensure smooth transition between the tweeter and woofer.

Acoustic Suspension MDF Cabinet: The Elac Debut DA42 Dolby Atmos enabled loudspeaker uses an acoustic suspension (sealed) cabinet for tight, accurate midbass performance. The cabinet is made of MDF (Medium Density Fiberboard), helping minimize unwanted vibrations that can discolor music or movie content. The MDF outer walls of the cabinet are covered with a wood-grain vinyl black finish. Detachable metal grilles are included.

5-Way Binding Posts: The Elac Debut series DA42 is fitted with a set of 5-way binding-post terminals which will accept bare-wire (up to 10AWG), pin-connectors, spade-lugs, and banana plugs (single or dual).

Applications: The Elac Debut series DA42 can be used in 5.1.2, 5.1.4, and 7.1.4 Dolby Atmos configurations. Make sure to following mounting, placement, and room requirements for best performance.

  • Mounting Options: The DA42 is designed to set on top of the Debut Elac DF52/DF62 floorstanding speakers or (DB52/DB62 bookshelf speakers, matching perfectly. It can also be used with other brands of conventional bookshelf or floorstanding speakers that feature a flat top-panel on the speaker cabinet.
  • Placement: For optimal effect and to minimize direct radiating audio at listener level, place the Dolby Atmos enabled speakers at or slight above the height of your ears when seated. Avoid placing the Dolby Atmos enabled speakers higher than one-half the height of your wall. The Dolby Atmos enabled speakers should be placed no closer than 3' from the main listening position; ideally they should be positioned 5' or more away.
  • Room Height: For optimal performance, the ceiling should be flat, (not angled or vaulted), with a height of 14' or less, and made of an acoustically reflective material; such as drywall, plaster, or hardwood. The ideal ceiling height is between 7.5' and 12'. Sound-absorbing and sound-diffusing treatment for handling unwanted reflections from the walls and floor is recommend to improve sound quality and system performance.
Note: The DA4.2 speakers are specifically designed for use as Dolby Atmos enabled speakers. They cannot be used as traditional speakers; doing so will damage the speakers.

Elac Debut 2.0 Series: The Elac Debut 2.0 series family of loudspeakers consists of two floorstanding loudspeakers (DF52/DF62), two bookshelf loudspeakers (DB52/DB62), two center-channel loudspeakers (DC52/DC62), a Dolby Atmos enabled loudspeaker (DA42), and two powered subs (S10EQ/S12EQ).

Q
Will these speakers be okay if my receiver has 100 watts per channel?
will  Feb 27, 2023
1 answer
A
It is likely that these will be just fine paired with an AVR with that rating. Nevertheless, our advisors would be happy to review your system in detail just to be sure. You may reach us via online chat or phone at 1-800-324-9695.

Q
Do these have the same "voicing" issues you would encounter when series matching the front array of speakers? Wondering how they would do on top of a set of SVS Ultra Bookshelves in front?
fred  Nov 02, 2021

A
Hello Fred T, I have these on top of Elac Uni-Fi 51 floor-standing speakers. I have not encountered any voicing issues - that said I can't say what you will experience with SVS Ultra's. Overall I have been very impressed with the Elac brand and would recommend their speakers. Best Regards Dan

They work very well for me and I placed them on top of my ELAC Debut 2.0 B6.2 Bookshelf Speakers

Q
I have a marantz SR-5013. I have an 18ft ceiling in my family room and planning to add the ELAC debut 2.0 A4.2 atmos speaker. Do you guys think that will work on that high ceiling?

A
Well I have nine ft ceiling ,although I can't tell if they really make a difference or not.
tery  Oct 18, 2019
A
I have these speakers as well. In my opinion upfiring is a noble attempt but falls very short. I have 9 Ft ceilings and have them cranked all the up in speaker management on my Yamaha RX A 2060. So no I do not think you will get much benefit with the height you have. Try it though worst case send them back.
michael  Oct 18, 2019
A
I have these on a 15 foot cathedral set up and they work great. They added just the right amount of spatial fill for what ii was looking for in a set of Atmos speakers. I think you'll love them.
marc s  Oct 18, 2019
A
I can't say for sure. I have an 8ft ceiling with Onkyo NR 676 and the sound doesn't really bounce but my ceiling isn't very reflective. I honestly am using my 6 and 7th channels high in back and not the Elacs any longer.
george w  Oct 17, 2019
A
Do you have flat or vaulted ceilings? Is there any popcorn finishes or textures? 18ft is pretty high for up-firing units, a ceiling mount or mounting high on your wall with an up-fire might be better. But if you have a flat smooth ceiling you should be okay. Just make sure to run room correction software on your avr.
vincent  Oct 17, 2019
A
No the ceiling is too high, to much travel time for the sound. You need in ceiling mounted speakers over head aimed straight down. A4.2 bounces off ceiling to deliver sound.
james  Oct 17, 2019
A
Maybe if you have a receiver with room correction, otherwise that may be a little too far for them to work as they should.
leonard  Oct 17, 2019
A
It depends on how high they'll be placed. It is recommended that they be positioned to fire up towards the ceiling and placed on top of your floor standing speakers.
victor  Oct 17, 2019
A
I have had theses speakers for a while and they are used for Dolby Atmos. To tell you the truth, I do not notice much coming from Atmos. They are about 1 foot from the ceiling and maybe that is why there is not much effect.
lawrence  Oct 17, 2019
Q
Would these pair effectively on Wharfdale Reva 2 bookshelf speakers or are there better options?
james  May 12, 2019

A
I've never listened to the Reva 2, but I have my Elacs partnered with a set of Mirage OM-9 bipolar speakers and it all sounds great. I'm a firm believer in making sure your two fronts and center are all voice-matched, but for the rear surrounds and Atmos speakers I don't think it's critically necessary. The Atmos speakers are primarily producing ambient sounds and sound effects and they don't need to be the same brand as your fronts & center to get the job done. I have no doubt that someone dropping $100K on a dedicated home theater, and searching for perfection, would attempt to brand-match the whole setup but for regular folks in regular living rooms with regular budgets I'm sure these will pair nicely with the Reva 2.
eric  May 26, 2019
A
I have these with kEF Q300. I can't say that this makes a big difference in sound. I have not tried any others to compare.
michael  May 24, 2019
A
I have them sitting on top of some Paradigm bookshelf speakers and they work great. They would essentially work on any flat surface, just check the dimensions to make sure they fit on top of your speakers.
leonard  May 24, 2019
Q
Are these wall mountable?
wayne  Feb 22, 2019
16 answers
A
They are really meant to sit on top of speakers and point to the ceiling. You may be too close to the ceiling for the full Dolby Atmos experience if you do manage to fit them to the wall.
paul  Mar 04, 2019
A
They don't come with brackets, but they're not very heavy, so I'm sure you could put even light picture brackets on the underside to wall mount them. They'd have to be mounted very high though I would think, otherwise the sound would be off.
marc s  Feb 27, 2019
A
I don't know, I bought stands for them.
tery  Feb 23, 2019
A
There are no mounting holes on the bottom/back of the speaker if that is the question. Also no mounting bracket/hardware included.
david  Feb 23, 2019
A
No, designed to sit on top of speakers
kevin c  Feb 22, 2019
A
No unfortunately. Also they use reflex drivers meant to aim at the ceiling. If you wall mounted for height use wouldn't reflect properly.
james  Feb 22, 2019
A
There are no mounting points on the base or the back but it would be simple to attach a slim fixture to the base so that a wall mounted high speaker could be configured without unsightly brackets.
phillip  Feb 22, 2019
A
No. They just sit on top of you bookshelf or tower speakers. They're no holes to mount them.
michael  Feb 22, 2019
A
They are not designed to be wall mountable. The speakers must face upward toward the ceiling if you are using this for Dolby Atmos.
lawrence  Feb 22, 2019
A
No these are not wall mountable. Elac makes wall mountable speakers in the Debut 2.0 series for Dolby Atmos. These are meant to sit on top of your front left and right channel speakers.
nicholas  Feb 22, 2019
A
No. There is no provision to mount them. They are designed to sit on top of your speakers and fire upward to reflect sound off of the ceiling.
george w  Feb 22, 2019
A
I don't believe there wall mountable there designed to sit on top of your front right and left speakers.
james  Feb 22, 2019
A
There are no mounting brackets on the back, and no screw holes, so if you want to mount them on a wall you'll need to add your own hardware which should be easy. Because these were designed to lay flat on an entertainment center or stand surface, the underside is flat and clean so there's plenty of room to add wall-mounting hardware.
eric  Feb 22, 2019
A
No, their not. Wall mountable are the Debut 2.0 OW4.2.
mario  Feb 22, 2019
A
No they are top speakers that rest on top of the speaker box.
augustus  Feb 22, 2019
A
No, not really made for that...no mounting bracket. I guess you could put them on a shelf mounted on the wall though.
