8" weather-resistant surface mount speaker for distributed audio systems (White)
Our take on the Atlas SM82T by Crutchfield's Eric Angevine
All-weather paging and music — with some bass punch — for your business
Looking for a commercial sound solution for your open-air seating area or outdoor amphitheater? The Atlas SM82T is weather-resistant, so you don't have to worry about it if a sudden downpour sweeps through. The included C-shaped mounting bracket makes initial installation easy, and allows quick removal when you need to check connections or adjust the built-in 70/100V tap. The speaker's 8" woofer and 1" titanium dome tweeter ensure customers can hear you when you page them to their tables. And music comes through loud and clear with plenty of low-frequency punch.

Overview: Atlas Sound surface mount speakers are designed for commercial, professional, and residential applications. These weather-resistant, full-range speakers can be used indoors or outdoors, in monaural or stereo configurations. Each SM-series speaker comes with a C-shaped mounting bracket.
Construction: The Strategy Series surface-mount loudspeakers feature weather-resistant construction for indoor or outdoor use year round. The talc-impregnated, injection-molded polypropylene enclosure is UV-resistant to withstand fading and breakdown. The speaker cabinet also withstands 100 hours of salt spray testing (per ASTM B117). The enclosure features powder-coated aluminum grilles with all-brass hardware inserts. The included heavy duty steel C-bracket is Zinc Chromate-plated and powder-coated, and is color-matched to the enclosure.
Paintable: The enclosure and grille can be painted to match your décor, if desired. The cabinets should be primed with two coats of spray primer before painting with oil- or water-based house paint or spray paint. The grille should be removed before painting with two thin coats of paint (primer not needed). Care should be given not to clog the grille holes with paint.
Drivers: The Atlas Sound SM82T-W is equipped with a 1" Exit Titanium high frequency compression driver, and a highly-efficient 8" Hycone-treated paper woofer. The drivers are crossed over at 2.2kHz (6dB/octave low pass, 12dB/octave high pass). The speaker's high-frequency TRX Waveguide System provides 65° horizontal and 65° vertical coverage. The PolyGuard High Frequency Circuit provides protection to the tweeter from damaging transient signals.
Wiring Options: The SM82T-W has a two-pole barrier strip terminal with a weather-resistant cover. The barrier strip can accept spade connectors or bare wire. For runs up to 500', 18-gauge wire is recommended, 16-gauge wire for 500'-1000' runs, and 14-gauge for runs over 1000'. The speaker is equipped with line matching transformers, requiring an amplifier capable of driving a 70.7V/100V line. Depending upon the amplifier's wattage rating and the number of speakers being driven by the amplifier, you can select a 0.94, 1.9, 3.8, 7.5, 15, 30, or 60-watt tap at 70.7V/100V. You can also bypass the line transformers and connect the speaker to a consumer amplifier (the speaker has an 8Ω impedance).
Speaker Placement: The speaker is wedge-shaped, which provides a number of placement options. For outdoor use, the speaker can be placed under an eave or other protective overhang. Indoors, you can use the natural boundary effect to increase the overall output. When you mount the speaker against one surface (wall), the boundary effect will increase the output by 3dB. Mounting the speaker against two surfaces (two walls or a ceiling and wall), the output increases by 6dB. Mounting the speaker against three surfaces (in a corner near a ceiling), the output will increase by 9dB. The bottom of the speaker cabinet is flat, and 90° to the speaker baffle, allowing you to place the speaker on a shelf. You can also place the speaker horizontally in any placement option.
