About the Ring Alarm Security Kit

Emily S.

Whole-home security in your hands

Ring has made home security easier and more affordable than ever with the release of their Ring Alarm Security Kit. Why pay for professional installation when you can set up Ring Alarm by yourself, in no time at all? This kit comes with everything you need to get started — you don't even need any tools.

Family enables Ring Alarm system on keypad as they leave through front door.

Ring Alarm gives you peace of mind at an affordable price.

The heart of the system is the base station, which connects to your network via Wi-Fi® or Ethernet cable. It communicates with the rest of the components wirelessly as you add them to your system. The base station provides visual and audio feedback regarding system status changes and events, including user-configurable "chirps" that sound when a device is tripped.

Those trippable devices include motion detectors and contact sensors. The kit includes one of each, but you can add on as many as you need to get the coverage you want. They have a range of 250 feet from the base station, but the included range extender lengthens the range of the secure mesh network created by your Ring Alarm system.

The system's keypad allows you to arm and disarm the system, bypass certain sensors, or trigger the alarm. It comes with a quick-release wall bracket so it can stay mounted or go with you from room to room.

Monitoring options

You can monitor and control your home's security on your smartphone using the free mobile app. But if you want an extra layer of protection, you can purchase a Ring Protect Plus plan. For $10 per month, or $100 per year, you can get 24/7 professional monitoring of your home.

When your sensors get tripped, your base station will inform the monitoring center to call the authorities. Cellular backup is included in the plan so that you are still covered if you lose Wi-Fi.

This service is a great option if you are planning to add an optional video doorbell or Ring camera to your system, because it includes cloud storage for unlimited Ring devices at a single location. That allows you to save and share your videos, rather than simply monitoring in real time

The best part? No lengthy contracts and no cancellation fees.

Expandable to fit your needs

If you have a larger home or even just a home with a lot of windows, you might want to consider adding some additional components to your alarm system. If you regularly enter through the garage or back door, it might be convenient to add a second keypad to the system. And you can secure that back door or any especially vulnerable windows with extra contact sensors. If you want to cover a broader area inside your home, pick up an extra motion detector or two.

Part of your ring of security

Remember — the Ring Alarm system is just one piece of your home protection puzzle. Fill in the gaps with these other Ring devices:

Some jurisdictions require permits for professionally monitored alarm systems. If you sign up for monitoring with a Ring Protect Plus plan, you will receive an email with information about permits and how to obtain them if necessary.

More details on the Ring Alarm Security Kit

Product Research

Features

Overview: The Ring Alarm Security Kit is an expandable home security system that helps keep your home, family, and valuables safe. The kit includes a base station, keypad, motion detector, contact sensor, and range extender. Additional sensors can be added to your system to give you extra layers of protection. The Ring Alarm also works with Ring security cameras, smoke detectors, video doorbells, and lighting products*. You can keep track of what's happening in your home through the free Ring App, available for iOS and Android devices. Optional Ring Protection plans can be purchased, starting at $3 per month.

* Note: When integrating the Ring Alarm with Ring smart lighting products (spotlights, floodlights, landscape), the Ring Smart Lighting Bridge, sold separately or included with the lighting products, is required.

Base Station: The Ring Alarm Base Station controls your entire home security system. It connects to your home network, either via Ethernet or Wi-Fi (2.4 GHz or 5 GHz), and communicates with all of your Ring Alarm devices. It also links to third-party Z-Wave and Zigbee devices, such as smoke and CO detectors. The Base Station has a built-in 110-decibel siren, and a 24-hour backup battery. It can be placed on any flat surface, or wall-mounted with the included hardware. Dimensions: 6-5/8"W x 1-1/2"H x 6-5/8"D.

Keypad: You can arm or disarm the alarm system with the included Keypad. The Ring Alarm system has three security modes: Disarmed (all sensors deactivated), Away (all sensors activated), and Home (activates designated sensors). Sensors can be placed in your garage, upstairs, or other convenient areas. The Keypad connects to the Base Station via Z-Wave, giving you a 250-foot range. It can be placed on any tabletop or shelf, or wall-mounted with the included quick-release bracket. The Keypad plugs into to any standard power outlet, and has a rechargeable battery to keep it operating during power outages. Dimensions: 5-13/16"W x 3-15/16"H x 1"D.

Contact Sensor: The included Contact Sensor lets you know when doors or windows are open. The sensor and magnet should be installed side-by-side, no more than 1/4" apart when the door or window is closed. When the door or window is opened, the magnet and sensor are separated, triggering an alert. The sensor and magnet can be mounted with the included tape or screws. The built-in 3V CR123 Lithium battery lasts for approximately 3 years. Sensor Dimensions: 3-1/4"W x 15/16"H x 15/16"D.

Motion Detector: The Ring Alarm Security kit includes one Motion Detector, which sends an alert when it detects motion in the room. The detector mounts to virtually any flat wall or corner in your home. Advanced motion sensitivity can tell the difference between a person and pets (under 33 pounds), so you get fewer false alarms. The Motion Detector connects to the Base Station via Z-Wave, which has a 250' range. It is powered by a 3-volt CR123 Lithium battery. Dimensions: 2-3/8"W x 3-1/2"H x 1-3/4"D.

Range Extender: The included Range Extender provides additional range for your Ring Alarm components. It plugs directly into any AC wall outlet, and has an integrated tab for securing the device to the outlet's cover plate screw. The Range Extender eliminates dead zones in larger homes, keeping your devices connected. The extender connects to the Base Station via Z-Wave, and extends Z-Wave connectivity another 250 feet. The built-in rechargeable battery powers the Range Extender for up to 24 hours, in case of a power outage. Dimensions: 1-7/8"W x 3.5"H x 1-3/16"D.

Ring App: The free Ring - Almost Home app pulls together all of your Ring devices, including the RingAlarm System, Video Doorbells and Security Cameras. You can have multiple users on your Ring account, each with the ability to view video from any of the video devices. The app sends an instant alert to your phone or tablet when someone triggers a Motion Detector, or if a Contact Sensor indicates a door or window was opened. If you have the Ring Video Doorbell, the app alerts you when someone rings your doorbell. You'll be able to see, hear, and speak to anyone on your property through your Ring security cameras. In addition, the app lets you create a virtual Neighborhood Watch and receive alerts from your neighbors. The app lets you zoom and pan for a better look, customize the Motion Zones, times for receiving (or not receiving) alerts, and how often to be notified for motion events. The Ring App is available for Apple iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch running iOS 9.1 or later, and for Android devices running version 5.0 and up. The app also works with Windows 10 and Mac OS.

Optional Protection Plans: The Ring Alarm Security System keeps you connected to your home in real time, with instant alerts sent directly to your smartphone or tablet. If you have Ring security cameras or Video Doorbells, you also get live view and 2-way talk. A free 30-day trial of Ring Protect Plus is included when you initially set up the Ring Alarm. Ring Protection Plans do not require contracts or long-term commitments. You may cancel your subscription at any time. There are two subscription plans available:
