Our take on the Garmin Edge 1030 by Crutchfield's Ken Nail
Your cycling multi-tool
We all have different reasons for riding a bike. But I've never seen a cycling computer that covers the many aspects of riding a bike like Garmin's Edge 1030. This powerful bike computer does more than just record how far and how fast you've gone. It will help you find new routes, train more effectively, and analyze your efforts — all while tapping into the power of your smartphone to keep you connected with the cycling community, both on and off the bike.
Edge 1030's preloaded Garmin Cycle Map will let you know your current location and what's coming up during your ride, and you can generate new routes with turn-by-turn prompts based on your location and distance through Garmin Connect. Popularity Routing taps into the data gathered by Garmin Connect to find the routes and trails that your fellow riders have grown to love. When you're on a group ride, you can keep tabs on the other riders with GroupTrack — and even use rider-to-rider messaging to let them know your status.
Your loved ones will never worry about you with Edge 1030 and your smartphone. Pair with your phone and features like live tracking and social media sharing will keep them in the loop. If the worst happens, Incident Detection will notify your contacts if it detects a possible crash. When your ride is done, Edge 1030 can automatically transfer ride data to your smartphone, so you can share the details of your epic day with your circle of friends immediately.
Real time training apps
Garmin Connect also provides you with real-time ride segment results when you're riding — so you'll know right away if you've bagged the KOM prize for your favorite climb, or beaten your training buddy's best on your favorite sprint. And if you're a Strava addict, you'll really dig challenging yourself in real time with Strava Live Segments.
Train and analyze
When you're serious about upping your performance level, this Garmin is your coach. When used with optional tools like a heart rate monitor, it records valuable metrics from your rides, then works in conjunction with Garmin Connect to provide a detailed analysis of your performance, with valuable insights like VO2 max calculations, recovery time advice, and advanced cycling dynamics. Bottom line? You'll train smarter and improve more quickly. The Edge 1030 is also compatible with ANT+-enabled power meters (not included), including Garmin's innovative Vector™ power meter system, so you can track your power output in watts when you ride — one of the most effective training methods available.
Even without optional tools, the Edge 1030's high-sensitivity GPS receiver records speed, distance, time, plus ascent and descent. A built-in barometric altimeter yields precise elevation measurements. The 1030's screen also displays Auto Pause, Auto Lap and temperature readings. Plus it'll even tell you what gear you're riding in, when it's integrated with Shimano DI2 electronic shifters.

Overview: The Garmin Edge 1030 is a compact, GPS-enabled advanced bicycle computer with connected features, such as live tracking and social media sharing via Garmin Connect, weather, and the ability to send and receive courses. It contains a pre-loaded Garmin Cycle Map, and has the option to add detailed maps via microSD card. The Edge 1030 is waterproof (IPX7 rated), and comes with two standard handlebar mounts and the new Flush Out-Front mount so you can move the device from bike to bike with ease.
Touchscreen Display: The Edge 1030 has a 3.5" diagonal backlit color touchscreen LCD (1.75"W x 3"H), with a display resolution of 282 x 470 pixels. You can maneuver through the menus and make selections directly on the touchscreen display. The display can show navigation maps along with your speed and distance, or show your elapsed time, speed, distance, elevation, and total ascent. With available accessory ANT+ wireless sensors, your pedaling cadence, calories burned, and heart rate can also appear on the display.
GPS Navigation: The Edge 1030 has a built-in high-sensitivity GPS receiver. The time of day and the date are automatically set by the GPS receiver. The device has preloaded Garmin Cycle Maps, showing on-road and off-road routes and points-of-interest. Using billions of miles of Garmin Connect ride data, Trendline popularity routing shows you the best on-road and off-road bike routes. The device is also compatible with optional detailed street maps and topographical maps available on microSD card. The maps, in combination with the GPS, can guide you while you're touring, commuting, competing, or working out.
Smartphone Compatible: You can wirelessly link your device to a smartphone (Android or iOS) using the Garmin Connect Mobile app. At the end of your ride, you can transfer the ride data directly to your phone via Bluetooth. Using the app, you can analyze the details of your ride, or share it with others. You can also search out courses and workouts stored at Garmin Connect, download them to your smartphone, and send them to your Edge 1030 wirelessly. Real-time weather updates and alerts can be sent from your smartphone to your device.
LiveTrack: Another connected feature of the Edge 1030, LiveTrack, allows your friends and family to follow your races and training activities in real time. You can invite your followers via email or social media to view your live data on the Garmin Connect tracking page. Once they see your invitation, they can click to follow your progress on a map and see your stats.
GroupTrack: GroupTrack allows you to keep track of other riders in your group in real time while you ride. Using LiveTrack directly on your Edge 1030 screen, you can see other riders in your GroupTrack session on the map screen. A rider in your group can be selected from the list, and that rider's location appears centered on the map. In addition, you can send prewritten messages to other riders in your group. All connected riders in the GroupTrack session must be within a range of 25 miles.
Incident Detection: A built-in accelerometer can detect if you have difficulty along the route, and will send your location coordinates to an emergency contact. When an incident is detected, a message appears on your device and paired smartphone, indicating your contacts will be notified after 30 seconds have elapsed. If you do not need assistance, you can cancel the automated emergency message. You must be connected to Garmin Connect mobile app, with emergency contacts entered, for Incident Detection to properly function.
Controls: Most of the controls are located on the touchscreen. On the Home screen, you can access your bike profile, change your activity profile, manage your history, courses, and workouts, and start a new ride. During your ride, you can use the buttons below the front panel to start/stop the timer and mark a new lap without having to look at the screen. The power button is located on the left side.
Waterproof: The Edge 1030 is waterproof to IEC Standard 60529 IPX7. It can withstand immersion in 1 meter of water for up to 30 minutes. The casing is totally sealed, including the front-mounted controls. The microSD card slot and USB port have a water-resistant cover to prevent corrosion.
ANT+: ANT+ is a wireless technology that allows certain accessories to communicate with the Edge 1030. ANT+ sensors generally work within 10 feet of the unit. In addition, an increasing number of health clubs and fitness centers have ANT+ compatible equipment in their facilities, so you can use the same accessories separate from your device. Compatible Garmin ANT+ accessories include:
- Heart Rate Monitor: When the Edge 1030 is paired with an optional Heart Rate Monitor, the unit tracks your heart beats per minute and calculates your calorie consumption as you train. You can train in a certain heart rate zone to improve your fitness level or compare your pace and heart rate to past performances. Available heart rate monitors (HRM) include the Soft Strap Premium HRM, the HRM-Tri, and HRM-Swim.
- Speed/Cadence Sensor: Speed and Cadence Sensors measure your riding speed and pedaling stroke patterns. The Edge 1030 has a Non-Zero Averaging option to let you include or exclude the zero values (when you're not pedaling) when calculating your power ratings. Garmin offers separate bike cadence and bike speed sensors, or a combo unit.
- Varia Bike Radar/Lights: Varia Rearview Radar and Smart Bike Lights work with the Edge 1030 to keep you safe as you ride on the highway. Varia Rearview Radar can alert you of vehicles approaching from behind. Varia Smart headlights and tail lights integrate with the Edge 1030 and change intensity with your speed.
Auto Pause: The built-in timer will pause automatically when it detects you're not moving, or when your speed drops below a specified value. The timer restarts when you resume your ride. This feature is helpful if your route includes stop lights or other places where you have to slow down or stop.
Auto Lap: The Auto Lap feature lets you automatically mark the lap at a specific position. This helps you compare your performance over different parts of a ride (i.e. a long climb or training sprints). You can also use Auto Lap to mark laps at a specific distance.
Data Storage: The Edge 1030's built-in memory (approximately 16 GB) stores at least 200 hours of ride data. The unit not only has an odometer to keep track of your mileage, but includes data on your last ride, longest ride, fastest ride, and all rides. Ride data can be sent to your smartphone via Bluetooth using the Garmin Connect app.
microSD Slot: The device has a slot on the back panel for installing a microSD card for saving ride data or installing pre-loaded maps. The unit supports FAT32-formatted microSD cards up to 2 TB. The card slot has a waterproof cover.
User Profile: The Edge 1030 allows you to enter data about yourself to create a User Profile. This data (gender, birth year, weight, and height) is used to calculate accurate ride data.
Activity Profiles: In addition to User Profiles, the Edge 1030 allows you to customize several activity profiles. You can create separate activity profiles for training, racing, and mountain biking. Each activity profile contains such data as activity totals, alerts, training zones (heart rate and speed), training settings (AutoPause and AutoLap), and navigation settings.
Garmin Connect: Garmin Connect is a free web-based or mobile application that lets you store your workout data for comprehensive analysis. Garmin Connect is used by cyclists worldwide, and presents your data in an easily understood manner, with maps, reports, and suggested activities. You can create fitness goals and send them to your device. As you complete activities toward your goals, they are tracked on both the device and on Garmin Connect. In addition, the Garmin Training Center software lets you track and analyze your fitness activities and create workouts to send to your device, without requiring Internet access after the initial download. Garmin Connect is available for the following devices:
- Mobile: Garmin Connect Mobile works with a wide variety of mobile devices. It is compatible with Apple iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch with iOS 9.0 or later, Android devices (version varies with device), and Windows devices running Windows 10 Mobile.
- Computer: You can download and install Garmin Connect on your PC or Mac using Garmin Express. It is compatible with Windows 7 SP1 or newer, and Mac OS X 10.10 or newer.
Performance Measurements: The Edge 1030 can track your personal statistics and calculate performance measurements. With optional ANT+ heart rate monitors, and other wireless sensors, your maximum oxygen volume (VO2 Max), an indication of your athletic performance, can be calculated. Other performance measurements can be calculated, including Stress Score, Training Load, and Recovery Time. These scores are graphically displayed on the screen in vivid color gauges.
Courses: The Edge 1030 can save your ride data as you train. From that saved data, you can use Garmin Connect software to create courses that you can follow in the future. Each time you follow the course, the unit will compare your time to previous rides, or to other riders, and let you set performance goals. As you ride along the course, the display will indicate distance and time to upcoming maneuvers.
Strava Live Segments: With a membership to Strava, a social network for cyclists, you can download routes to the Edge 1030. Strava routes have segments that allow you to compete against other Strava members that have ridden the segment before, as well as your own personal bests. The Edge 1030 will alert you that a Strava segment is coming up, and where the start and finish lines are.
Virtual Partner: During your workout, you can use the Virtual Partner to help you meet your goals. The Virtual Partner rides along with you and provides incentive for you to keep up or stay ahead. If necessary, you can adjust the speed of the Virtual Partner during the ride.
USB Port: A Micro-USB port is provided for charging and connecting to your computer, using the included Micro USB cable. A water-resistant plug keeps moisture out.
Power Requirements: The unit is powered by a built-in Lithium-Ion rechargeable battery. It charges via the included USB cable when connected to your computer or an optional AC or USB power adapter. The battery charge level is expressed as a percentage on the display. Under typical usage, the battery life is approximately 20 hours. Extremely cold temperatures will also reduce battery life.
Mounting: The Edge 1030 can be mounted to your bicycle's handlebars or stem. Two sizes of O-rings are included for best fit. Two complete standard mounts and the Flush Out-Front Bike Mount are included to allow you to use the unit on multiple bikes. The Flush Out-Front mount has two rubber pads: a thick one for handlebars with a diameter of 25.4mm (1"), and a thin one for 31.8mm (1-1/4") diameter handlebars.
