About the Klipsch Reference R-41SA

Take your Klipsch home theater to a higher level

Maybe you've heard about Dolby Atmos. It's an expanded type of surround sound that enhances your movie soundtracks by accurately positioning sounds all around you — including above you. If you've got Reference tower speakers, the add-on R-41SA pair lets you add "height" sound effects to movie night.

How do they work?

Each R-14SA speaker has a 4" woofer and a horn-loaded tweeter on its top baffle. These drivers are angled to reflect sound off of your ceiling and back down to your listening position. These compact add-on modules sit right on top of your existing Reference speakers. Use a pair with your front speakers for a "5.1.2" system. With a compatible receiver, you can even add another pair to the rear surround speakers for an even more enveloping experience.

The R-41SA can also be wall-mounted for use as regular surround speakers.

Does your receiver have what it takes?

You'll need a home theater receiver with Dolby Atmos in order to get enhanced surround sound with these speakers.

There is a keyhole slot on the back, as well as four integrated rubber feet on the bottom of the speaker.

  • Dolby Atmos "Topper" Dimensions: Keep in mind the R-41SA's dimensions when using it as a Dolby Atmos topper, as it must be able to rest on top of your floorstanding or bookshelf loudspeaker. It measures 5.75" (w) x 7.125" (h) x 12.75" (d). The rubber feet on the bottom of the speaker have a footprint that measures 4.5" (w) x 10.125" (d).
  • Wall-Mount Dimensions: When wall mounted, the R-41SA measures 5.75" (w) x 12.75" (h) x 7.125" (d).

1" Horn-Loaded Tweeter: The R-41SA Dolby Atmos speaker features Klipsch's proprietary Tractrix Horn technology mated with a 1" aluminum LTS tweeter, for impressive high-end response and greater extension, enhanced imaging and powerful dynamics.

  • 90°x90° Tractrix Horn: Klipsch exclusive 90º x 90º Tractrix horn technology ensures that the R-41SA high frequency energy is aimed at the ceiling and bounces down to the listener with laser precision - all while reducing artificial reverb or filtering. The Copper-Spun IMG (Injection Molded Graphite) woofer is exceptionally light while being extremely rigid - providing remarkable low frequency response, with minimal cone breakup and distortion.

Q
Can I have these on the floor? I got them for dirt cheap and have the Klipsch reference theatre pack 5.1. Will that make this 5.1.2? I have satellite speakers that are not standing and mounted to wall. Any help or tips is helpful! Thanks!
travis  Aug 03, 2022

A
Greetings Travis, and thank you for your question. These by design go on top of larger bookshelf speakers, or floor standing speakers. They do have a slot on the back for wall hanging as well. Sitting on the floor might not get you the reflection off the ceiling correctly.

i wouldn't think so. and if you gear is like mine. a mic will balance it out during setup
robert  Mar 04, 2022
A
That is actually a good question and I'm not 100% sure if the answer either way but I have enjoyed watching Atmos enabled audio since adding these to make a 5.1.2 system. A lot of people recommend in-ceiling down firing speakers for their height speakers but I didn't go that route for many different reasons and I'm not disappointed. I also have popcorn ceilings and can still easily hear the height effects sometimes more than others depending on what I'm watching. Hope that helps some!

I think they have a key hole in them to hang from a screw. I wouldn't suggest using these for surrounds however. They are angled to bounce of the ceiling. They also lack mid bass being a 4 inch woofer. They work great for ATMOS though.

Q
Can these be used with Sonos?

A
They should work, however I am not familiar with SONOS
michael  Feb 22, 2021
A
I own these speakers and they are not made to work with Sonos from what I can tell. I have never tried to use them with Sonos, but these speakers are made to be wired to a receiver. Their is nothing smart about the speakers and they are not wireless speakers.

Q
If putting these atop your front main speakers on a 5.2 set up how do you wire them? Do you parralell them to the fronts Or to another output?
thomas  Dec 15, 2019

A
These are designed Dolby Atmos and should be used and connected as "height" speakers in your system to get the effect of sound from above.. If your receiver doesn't process Dolby Atmos and you are still wanting to use these they should most likely be used as a rear surround or similiar and not as a "front" as I'm guessing your wanting to add them to your front towers.. These should run at higher Hz frequency setting than fronts typically would in order to achieve a higher crisp sound from them. I hope this helps..
nicholas  Dec 31, 2019
A
These are Dolby Atmos speakers....originally for 6.1 and beyond, but you can use them however you like. If you want surround you the dedicated output for them, never parallel. Always observed polarity. Rock on!!!!!!
luis a  Dec 31, 2019
A
To wire them correctly, your receiver should have connections dedicated to outputting the atmos signal to these speakers.
albert  Dec 30, 2019
A
You will need a separate out power your receiver.
roy  Dec 30, 2019
A
I used another output
dustan  Dec 30, 2019
A
You will need a 7.1 channel receiver at a min. It also needs to have Dolby ATMOS. You would then hook these up to the 7-9th channel etc, and in your setup menu set them as atmos. Hope this helps.
lynsey  Dec 30, 2019
A
I hooked them up directly to my amp which had separate hookup for atmos speakers.
simon  Dec 15, 2019
A
I'm assuming you mean 5.1.2 or 5.2.2 ((main.subwoofer(s).atmos)) for Dolby Atmos setup? If so, you will need to run them from separate channel's. For a 5.x.2 your receiver will need a minimum of 7 channels with the last two channels dedicated to the Atmos speakers and set to the 5.x.2 Atmos setting. If your just adding additional speakers to an existing 5.x ((main.subwoofer(s)) setup then yes you would run them parallel with your front mains if that is where you plan to put them and if you only have a 5 channel receiver.

Q
CAN YOU MOUNT THIS SPEAKER ON THE CEILING FACING DOWN?
c_innova  Apr 03, 2019
5 answers
A
Anything is possible but my question to you is, why? For one these may look small but they are heavy. Second if you are using them as Atmos speakers and using them correctly according to Dolby Atmos Laboratories recommendations then there is no need because they project sound off the ceiling back down to the listening area. I have these and they do exactly as they were made to do and sound great.
curtis  Apr 14, 2019
A
I don't think it would be a good idea, these speakers are fairly heavy and only have a single keyhole slot on the bottom, I imagine they would rattle unless you modified them for a firmer mount.
david  Apr 05, 2019
A
possibly do a ceiling mount..extra work, i have them on a wall shelf setting by bose 301's works great less headache..use wire channeling to neatly hide speaker wires....
william  Apr 04, 2019
A
I would not recommend that simply because of the weight of the speakers.
david lawrence  Apr 03, 2019
A
I suppose you could, but they're quite heavy, and could hurt someone badly if they fell
david  Apr 03, 2019
Q
What is the crossover setting I should use for this speaker? I'd like to go with 80Hz if it allows. Right now I use 100Hz just to be safe. Looked into the specs on Klipsch website and it doesn't have the lower range of Hz capability of this speaker. Thank you.
tintin  Feb 17, 2019
4 answers
A
That setting is perfect.
luis a  Dec 31, 2019
A
First of all these speakers have 4 inch woofs, that dont produce deep bass......so be safe with 100Hz. Or go with your receivers crossover setting.ENJOY.....and MAY THE FORCE BE WITH YOU.
luis a  Feb 20, 2019
A
I have mine on 100.
connie  Feb 19, 2019
A
The frequency response for this speaker is 80 Hz to 21kHz, however the filter cutoff frequency is 4.2 kHz at the upper range. Therefore, if the speaker performs exactly to spec, you could use a crossover setting of 80Hz.
albert  Feb 19, 2019
Q
cant place them in front. Will I get the same effect if I use them as my surrounds to the left and right of my seating or in the back? 7.1 setuo
jpetro  Jan 25, 2019

A
I am assuming your going to wall mount these as "surrounds"? If i am correct then you can use these in that manner however these type of speakers will be just that, surround, as you stated 7.1 which will be work. According to Dolby Laboratories the Dolby Atmos enabled speaker setup, which you can find several articals online, state that these type of speakers should be mounted in front at the left and right position preferably on top of the floor speakers firing upward for proper Atmos effect. Then your speaker configuration would be 5.1.2 assuming you have fronts, rears, center & subwoofer. Otherwise your setup of 7.1 is just 7.1 surround which you will loose the Atmos effect. I have these speakers setup in the 5.1.2 configuration as mentioned above and I love it. You do get that direct overhead Atmos effect which you would not get with them being mounted as surrounds.
curtis  Jan 25, 2019
A
I purchased these for Atmos but they can be used as surrounds for your setup. These should give you clearer highs as they are meant to project sound. Hope this helps.
josue  Jan 25, 2019
A
I would think they would work fine for what you want to do, could always call crutchfield and ask advisor but I think they will tell you the same thing, but does not hurt to ask they are very knowledgeable, I don't want to mislead you
casey  Jan 25, 2019
A
I have these on top of my front mains, use them in a 5.1.2 setup, wonderful speakers, does make a difference, highly recommend, if receiver is capable of running these in that setup you will not be disappointed, hope that answers your question
