About the Fujifilm FinePix XP130

Emily S.

Everything-proof

It's good to have a camera in your bag that can take a bit of abuse. I was once playing fetch with a dog, and the camera on my wrist flew off into the middle of the river. Fortunately, it was waterproof like this FinePix XP130, so it was fine when I fished it out. My socks and shoes were not so lucky.

Fujifilm's XP130 is just that kind of rugged, go-anywhere camera. Unlike our phones — which can be delicate and slippery — it's not going to get hurt if your kid drops it, and you won't have to put it in a cup of rice if it gets wet. So you can feel free to capture the fun at the beach, on a boat, or underwater.

Handy features

There's a companion "Camera Remote" app that allows you to remotely release the camera's shutter — great for capturing selfies, group shots, or even wildlife. The mobile app also makes it easy to transfer photos to your phone for adding your favorite filters or sharing with friends and family.

I frequently take short movies of dogs playing at the local animal shelter where I volunteer, and I love that the XP130 allows you to capture still photos while you are filming a video. And speaking of dogs, the built-in level gauge ensured my couch wasn't off-kilter in all the dogs-being-lazy shots I took while I was testing it out.

Fun with advanced filters

The XP130 has over twenty helpful shooting modes, including a few that give you great low-light shots without a flash. But if you dig a bit deeper in the menu, you'll be rewarded with an abundance of really cool advanced filters. Here are a few of my favorites:

toy camera

Toy camera creates a shaded border for a nostalgic effect.

miniature effect

Miniature mode blurs the top and bottom of the frame.

high key

High key enhances brightness and reduces contrast.

dynamic

Dynamic mode creates a fantasy HDR effect.

partial color modes bring out single colors

There are several partial color modes that single out one color while washing out the rest. This is partial color mode in yellow.

sketch

My cat Radar helped me demonstrate sketch mode.

    Features

Overview: The Fujifilm FinePix XP130 is a rugged camera that is designed to withstand all of your family's adventures. The camera is waterproof, shockproof, freeze-proof, and dust-proof, so you can take it wherever you want without worry. The XP130 comes with a rechargeable battery, AC charging adapter, USB cable, and a 16 GB SDHC memory card.

5x Zoom Lens: The camera is equipped with an F3.9-4.9 Fujinon lens with a 5x optical zoom. It has a focal length of 28-140mm (35mm equivalent). Combined with the intelligent digital zoom of approximately 2x, the total zoom is 10x.

LCD Monitor: The XP130 has a 3.0" color LCD monitor featuring approximately 920,000 dots and approximately 100% horizontal and vertical coverage in the shooting mode.

Rugged Build Quality: The XP130 features a rugged build quality that meets standards for water, dust, and shock resistance (through Fujifilm's in-house testing). It has a specially sealed chassis, including a locking battery compartment, that gives it a IPX8 water resistance rating (to 65 feet), and an IP6X dust resistance rating. Its rugged, reinforced body is shockproof, withstanding drops up to 5.8 feet (MIL-STD-810F-516.5 standard). The camera can also freeze-proof down to 14°F.

Image Sensor: The FinePix XP130 features a 1/2.3-inch BSI-CMOS image sensor with 16.76-million total pixels, and 16.4-million effective pixels.

Recording Media: Still images and movies can be recorded onto SD, SDHC, or SDXC memory cards. The XP130 also has an internal memory of approximately 90 MB to allow you to store a few extra images in case your memory card is full. A 16 GB Class 10/UHS-I-compatible SDHC card is included.

Bluetooth/Wi-Fi: You can wirelessly connect your camera to your smartphone, tablet, or computer. Using Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE), you can view or transfer photos from your camera on your device. You can also operate the camera remotely from your smart device, or send photos to an Instax SHARE printer for instant prints. The camera can communicate with a smartphone, tablet, or computer via Wi-Fi. A dedicated button on the back of the camera lets you easily pair the camera to your device. Using Fujifilm PC AutoSave software (free via download), you can connect to your computer via Wi-Fi for saving images. For smartphones and tablets, you'll need the Fujifilm Camera Remote app, available for iPhone/iPad/iPod touch (iOS 8.0 or later), and Android devices (running Android 4.0 and up). For devices using Android 6.0 or later, you can transfer location information from your device to the camera to tag your images.

Still Image Quality: The FinePix XP130 records still images in JPEG format in three sizes (Large, Medium, and Small) in four aspect ratios (4:3, 16:9, 3:2, and 1:1). You can set the image quality to Fine (low compression) or Normal (high compression). The image sizes for each aspect ratio are as follows:

    Image Size 4:3 3:2 16:9 1:1
    Large 4608 x 3456 4608 x 3072 4608 x 2592 3456 x 3456
    Medium 3264 x 2448 3264 x 2176 3264 x 1840 2432 x 2432
    Small 2048 x 1536 2304 x 1536 1920 x 1080 1728 x 1728

Motion Panorama: You can shoot panoramic images as you pan across a wide or tall scene. You can shoot 360°, 180°, or 120° panoramas, either in vertical or horizontal orientation in the following resolutions:

    • 360°: 11520 x 1632 (vertical); 11520 x 1088 (horizontal)
    • 180°: 5760 x 1632 (vertical); 5760 x 1088 (horizontal)
    • 120°: 3840 x 1632 (vertical); 3840 x 1088 (horizontal)

Movies: The XP130 can record high definition and standard definition movies in MOV format (MPEG-4 AVC/H.264) with monaural Linear PCM audio. A card with an SD speed Class 10 or better is recommended when shooting movies. The following options are available:

    • Full HD:
      • 1920 x 1080p, 60 fps
      • 1920 x 1080p, 30 fps
    • HD: 1280 x 720p, 60 fps
    • VGA: 640 x 480, 30 fps
    • High Speed:
      • 640 x 480, 120 fps
      • 320 x 240, 240 fps
      • 160 x 120, 320 fps

Shooting Modes: You can set the camera to suit your level and style of photography. The shooting mode choices include: Scene Recognition, Auto, Program AE, Cinemagraph, Action Camera, Pro Low-Light, HDR, Natural and Flash, Multiple Exposure, Portrait, Landscape, Advanced Filter, Motion Panorama 360, Sport, Night, Night (Tripod), Sunset, Snow, Beach, Underwater, Underwater (Macro), Party, Flower, and Text.

Advanced Filter: The camera offers 11 Advanced Filters for making creative photos. You can preview the filter effects on the LCD monitor. The available Advanced Filters include: Sketch, Pop Color, Toy Camera, Miniature, Soft Focus, Partial Color (Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, or Purple), Cross Screen, High-Key, Low-Key, Dynamic Tone, and Fish-eye. Seven of the filters can be used for movie recording.

Intelligent Face Detection: When Face Detection is On, the camera automatically detects human faces anywhere in the frame and sets the focus and exposure for shots that emphasize portrait subjects. This mode will prevent the camera from focusing on the background when taking group portraits or self portraits. Intelligent Face Detection also offers a red-eye removal option for removing the red-eye effects caused by the flash.

Image Stabilization: When shooting in a poorly lit area, any degree of camera shake can cause blurry pictures. In this case, sensor-shift Image Stabilization can be activated to reduce the effect of the camera shake. You can choose whether the image stabilization is performed at all times (Continuous) when the camera is in the shooting mode, or only when the shutter button is pressed halfway (Shooting Only). Image Stabilization can be turned off when using a tripod.

ISO Sensitivity: You can manually set the camera's sensitivity to ISO 100, 200, 400, 800, 1600, 3200, or 6400. The Auto settings will adjust the sensitivity settings according to the shooting conditions. The higher the sensitivity setting, the better the camera is at reducing blur in poor lighting conditions, however, high settings can result in more noise in the recorded images.

White Balance: White balance is used to preserve natural colors under different types of lighting. You can select Auto, Direct Sunlight, Shade, "Daylight" fluorescent lamps, "Warm White" fluorescent lamps, "Cool White" fluorescent lamps, and Incandescent light.

Exposure Compensation: You can alter the exposure from the value suggested by the camera, making pictures brighter or darker. You can adjust the exposure a total of 13 steps from -2.0 to +2.0 EV in 1/3 EV steps. Exposure compensation is available in the Program AE shooting mode only.

Continuous Shooting: You can capture motion in a series of pictures using the Continuous Shooting mode. There are several continuous shooting speeds to choose from, including three "Final" options, in which the camera records and saves the last several pictures.

    Speed Frame Rate Maximum Frames
    Large, Medium Small
Continuous Hi 10 fps 10 frames 20 frames
    Continuous Med 5 fps
    Continuous Lo 3 fps
    Continuous Burst 60 fps N/A 40 frames
    (1920 x 1080 only)
Last Hi 10 fps 10 frames 20 frames
    Last Med 5 fps
    Last Lo 3 fps

Self-timer: The camera gives you the choice of a 10-second or 2-second self timer. In addition, you can take pictures of yourself with others using the Couple Timer or Group Timer. With the Couple Timer, the camera starts the timer when it detects two portrait subjects close together. You can also vary the proximity of the two persons (near, close-up, super close-up). When the Group Timer is used, the camera starts the timer when the selected number of portrait subjects (1-4) is detected.

Interval Shooting/Time-Lapse Movie: You can capture multiple images of a scene taken at set intervals to capture a beautiful sunset or a flower blooming. You can save the still images only, or save the still images and create a time-lapse movie. The time-lapse movie will condense the scene from minutes or hours into seconds. You can set the shooting interval to 3 sec, 5 sec, 10 sec, 15 sec, 30 sec, 60 sec, 5 min or 10 minutes. The shooting duration can be set to 5 min, 10 min, 30 min, 60 min, 2 hours, 3 hours, or 6 hours.

Focusing: The XP130 uses contrast-detection TTL (through the lens) Auto Focusing. You can choose from Center, Multi, Area, or Tracking focus modes for still images, and Center or Continuous Movie AF Modes. The camera's focus range is approximately 1.9' to infinity (wide angle) and 3.2' to infinity (telephoto). In the Macro mode, the focus range is approximately 3.5" to 6.5' (wide angle) and 3.2' to 9.8' (telephoto).

Flash Modes: The FinePix XP130 has a built-in flash with an effective range of 2.3' to 14.4' (wide angle), 3.2' to 12.4' (telephoto). In Macro Mode the flash range is 1.0' to 6.5' (wide) and 3.2' to 9.8' (telephoto). Red-eye removal minimizes the "red-eye" effect, and is available for each flash mode. You can choose from the following flash modes:

    • Auto: flash fires automatically as required by the shooting conditions
    • Fill Flash: flash will fire whenever a picture is taken
    • Slow Synchro: auto flash combined with slow shutter speeds (tripod recommended)
    • Flash Off: You can close the pop-up flash when flash photography is prohibited, or to capture natural lighting under dim light.

Light Metering: The XP130 uses 256-segment, TTL (through-the-lens) metering, where the camera automatically assesses the scene and selects the optimum exposure.

Viewing Images: Images can be played back one-at-a-time or in a variety of multi-frame views. Multi-frame options include a side-by-side two-frame display (with smaller thumbnails of the previous and next frames), 9-image grid (3 x 3) and a 100-image grid (10 x 10) of micro-thumbnails. In the 9- and 100-image grid views, the highlighted image is slightly enlarged.

Image Search: The Image Search function lets you search pictures by the following criteria:

    • Date: Viewing images by date makes it easy to locate specific events or occasions.
    • Face: Portraits can be selected based on composition: groups, couples, or solo portraits.
    • Favorites: Search for photos by rating
    • Scene: Pictures shot in Auto or SR Auto modes can be replayed according to the type of scene: portrait, landscape, night scene, or macro.
    • Type: You can easily search your pictures according to the type of photos: still photos, edited images, or movie footage.

Playback Zoom/Cropping: You can enlarge a still image in the monitor according to the image quality (size). After you have zoomed in and scrolled the picture to the desired composition, you can create a cropped image of a picture. Copies will have an aspect ratio of 4:3, and will be saved as a separate file.

Resize: To create a small copy of a picture, you can select "Resize" from the menu. The new images vary in size with the original image.

Slide Show: You can view pictures in an automated slide show. You can select normal playback, or with a Fade transition. If the images is of faces, the camera automatically zooms in on the faces detected by Intelligent Face Detection.

Printing Pictures: Using DPOF (Digital Print Order Form), you can designate which images to print, and whether to print them with or without date. Pictures can also be printed wirelessly via Bluetooth to Fujifilm instax SHARE printers.

Power Requirements: The FinePix XP130 is powered by the supplied NP-45S Lithium-Ion rechargeable battery (3.7V, 740mAh). A fully-charged battery is good for approximately 240 shots. The supplied BC-45S battery charger will charge an NP-45S battery in about 120 minutes.

Auto Power Off Function: When the camera is operated on battery power, the Auto Power Off function will automatically turn off the camera to reduce the drain on the batteries if no operations are performed for 2 minutes or 5 minutes, as set in the menu. Regardless of the option selected, the camera will not automatically turn off when connected to a printer or computer, or when a slide show is in progress.

    Connections

Micro HDMI: The FinePix XP130 is equipped with a Type-D Micro HDMI output for connecting the camera to a High Definition TV using an HDMI cable (not supplied).

Micro USB: The camera features a Micro-B USB port for connecting the camera to your computer for image transfer, or to the included AC power adapter for charging the battery. A Micro-USB cable is included.

    Software
