How to shop for furniture, stands & mounts

Making a sizable investment in a new TV or audio system? Make sure you have furniture, stands, and mounts that can safely and attractively support your gear.

Below you'll find some shopping tips. For more detailed info, read our articles about A/V furniture, speaker stands, and TV wall mounts.

Furniture

Well-designed entertainment centers, TV stands, and audio cabinets provide adjustable shelves, proper ventilation, and handy cable management features. For example, a cabinet with built-in wheels makes it much easier to access the cable connections and to occasionally move your rig for cleaning.

Speaker stands

Small loudspeakers are often called "bookshelf speakers," but that's too bad. They really don't sound good when placed on bookshelves. They sound much better when strategically positioned on a set of sturdy speaker stands. Don't want to devote floor space to your speakers? You might try speaker wall mounts.

TV wall mounts

Mounting your TV on a wall gives you a very clean, safe, and space-efficient installation. Which type of mount is right for you?

A simple, low-cost fixed mount is a good choice if you'll be sitting directly in front of the TV, and you can position the TV at about eye-level when you're seated.

If you have to mount the TV higher on the wall, get a tilt mount, so you can angle the screen toward your eyes. This can make a big difference in perceived picture quality.

Full-motion (also known as "articulating") mounts let you tilt and swivel the TV to adjust for seating and to deflect glare away from your field of vision. Fireplace-mount models let you temporarily lower the TV from above the fireplace to a more comfortable viewing height.

Projector mounts

To get your home theater projector out of harm's way, hang it from the ceiling, using one of these sturdy projector mounts.

Cable management

Wire ties and cable wraps help you tame the wire mess behind your A/V receiver. Raceways, also known as cable covers, help you conceal wires without actually running them inside your walls.

Power relocation kits

When you wall mount a TV, how do you conceal the cords and cables? With a power relocation kit, you can hide the power cord and HDMI cables without paying an electrician.
