About the Sony DSC-RX0

Deia Z.

Not your ordinary action cam

Sony's ultra-compact DSC-RX0 camera is tough enough to go along on any adventure, but it's got quite a lot going for it besides that. With a large 1" sensor, blazing-fast processor, and high-quality wide-angle ZEISS lens, this unique little camera excels at capturing high-resolution video and stills, even in low light or difficult environments.

Create stunning 4K movies

The 'RX0 has pro-level features for recording richly detailed movies in 4K or Full HD resolution. The camera's Picture Profile system includes S-Log 2 gamma curves for shooting wide dynamic range scenes. A clean HDMI output sends uncompressed movie data to an external recorder or monitor. You can keep recording internally to the camera even when using this function.

Sony DSC-RX0

The Sony DSC-RX0 lets you freeze time with high-speed action captures.

Slow down time

The 'RX0's speedy processing lets you take high-speed photos and slow-motion video. You can freeze objects in motion with electronic shutter speeds up to 1/32,000 seconds, or slow down time with 40X super-slow-motion HD video capability. Capture fleeting moments like fireworks bursting in midair, or a butterfly flapping its wings, and watch the action unfold in ways you've never seen before.

Creative shooting freedom and flexibility

The 'RX0 expands the capabilities of the action camera beyond anything we've seen so far. A full complement of available accessories lets you add external microphones, lights and filters, and even take the camera underwater down to 330 feet — a tenfold increase over its native capabilities.

This capable little camera works great as part of a multi-camera system. Sony's PlayMemories Mobile app gives you smooth control of multiple cameras from your phone or tablet (up to 50 cameras with version 6.2; possible firmware update required). And if you need even more, Sony's CCB-WD1 Wired Control Box lets you link up to 100 cameras via a wired IP connection for seamless control and precise video sync support.

Recording Features

Ultra Compact Camera: The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX0 digital camera is a miniature digital camera with maximum performance. Measuring only 2-3/8" x 1-5/8" x 1-3/16" (WxHxD), the RX0 packs a lot of technology into a tiny form factor. The camera has a 1", 15.3MP image sensor and a Zeiss lens for excellent picture quality. It also features a waterproof, shockproof, and crushproof body.

1.5" LCD Screen: The DSC-RX0 has a 1.5" Clear Photo LCD screen with 230,400 dots. The LCD brightness control can be set manually from -2 to +2, or to Sunny Weather for shooting outdoors. There is no separate viewfinder.

Recording Media: The camera is compatible with the following recording media: microSD, microSDHC, microSDXC, and Memory Stick Micro (M2). SD Speed Class 4 or faster or UHS Speed Class 1 cards are recommended for recording still images, MP4 movies and AVCHD movies. SD Speed Class 10 or faster or UHS Speed Class 1 (SDHC or SDXC) cards are recommended for XAVC S movies.

Image Recording Formats: The camera records still images and movies in the following file formats:

  • Still Images:
    • JPEG (Extra Fine, Fine, and Standard compression)
    • RAW (Sony ARW 2.3 Format)
    • JPEG+RAW (images from both formats created at the same time)
  • Movies:
    • XAVC S (MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 video; 2-channel, 48kHz/16-bit LPCM audio)
    • AVCHD Ver. 2.0 format (MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 video; Dolby Digital 2ch audio)
    • MP4 (MPEG-4/H.264 video; 2-channel AAC audio)

Image Sensor: The camera is equipped with a 1.0" stacked, back-illuminated Exmor RS CMOS image sensor with a DRAM chip. This 13.2 x 8.8mm (1") image sensor has approximately 21.0-million total pixels and 15.3-million effective pixels and a 3:2 aspect ratio. Paired with the image sensor is the high speed BIONZ X image processor.

Lens: The camera is equipped with a bright Carl Zeiss Vario-Tessar T* (T-star) 7.7mm (24mm equivalent) lens with F4.0 aperture. The lens is constructed with 6 aspheric element in 6 groups.

Rugged Construction: The DSC-RX0 has an extra rigid, super duralumin body that is built to withstand even the toughest photo shoots. The camera underwent rigorous texting to ensure superior performance, and was certified to the following standards:

  • Waterproof: The camera is sealed so that it is waterproof down to 33 feet (10 meters) without a waterproof housing.
  • Shockproof: The quality craftsmanship of the camera helps the internal components withstand the impact of drops to the ground from heights of 6-1/2 feet (2 meters).
  • Crushproof: The super-rigid body makes the camera crushproof under weights of up to 400 foot-pounds (200kgf / 2000N).

Anti-Distortion Shutter: The camera's Anti-Distortion Shutter is capable of shutter speeds of up to 1/32000 sec. Coupled with the speed of the Exmor RS sensor, image distortion of swiftly moving objects, caused by conventional rolling shutters, is minimized.

Still Image Sizes: When recording digital still images, the DSC-RX0 allows you to choose from multiple image sizes in four aspect ratios: 3:2 (for printing), 16:9 (for viewing on an HDTV), 4:3 (for viewing on a computer), and 1:1 (for shooting as a medium format camera). The following image sizes are available:
