A first-class camera, reimagined

Whether you're a seasoned professional looking for a top-of-the-line full-frame DSLR with 4K video capabilities or you're just stepping up to your first professional camera, the Canon EOS 1D X Mark II deserves a serious look. And if you're already a devoted user of the original EOS 1D X, we think you'll appreciate all the refinements Canon's latest flagship camera has to offer. It retains its predecessor's shape, build, and ergonomic handling, but housed within that familiar sturdy dust- and moisture-resistant magnesium alloy body are some powerful and convenient new features and technologies — all geared toward increasing your productivity and maximizing the quality of your results.

Fast and focused

This is the fastest EOS 1D yet, thanks to Dual Digic 6+ image processors and high-speed recording to the CFast™ card slot. You can fire off consecutive shots at up to 14 frames per second, or up to 16 fps in Live View Mode. The improved 61-point autofocus system has a wider subject tracking area for better performance when subjects change speed and position. An impressive 360,000-pixel metering sensor lets the camera quickly recognize subjects for more precise autofocus, metering, and exposure compensation. Canon's Intelligent Tracking and Recognition system uses this information to provide more consistent autofocus on moving subjects.

A low-light dynamo

A 20.2-megapixel full-frame sensor enhances the EOS 1D X Mark II's low-light performance, with reduced noise in dark portions of an image, even at high ISO settings. The camera's high standard and expanded ISO range, high signal-to-noise ratio, and powerful noise reduction make it easier to shoot in different situations with changing light.

Improved tools for quick composition and viewing

The EOS 1D X Mark II's improved viewfinder can show more information on its LCD display, letting you compose your shot and change settings easily. Check autofocus, white balance, metering, and more, all while keeping your eye on your subject. Autofocus points are highlighted in red to make them easier to see, even with difficult ambient lighting. The addition of a touchscreen interface to the camera's rear LCD monitor adds some exciting capabilities. While shooting in Live View mode, you can switch AF points and magnify images right from the touchscreen. You can also use the touchscreen to protect and erase images quickly, and create slideshows with your images.

4K and Full HD video recording for videographers of all levels

You can capture smooth 4K video at up to 60 fps, thanks to the speed of the EOS 1D X Mark II's dual processors. This is also the first EOS camera to record Full HD at 120 fps, so you can capture details that are normally imperceptible to the human eye in slow motion video. If you're a less experienced videographer, the 1D X Mark II is easy to handle. Intuitive touchscreen operation lets you select AF points while the camera is rolling. You can rely on continuous autofocus for easy shooting, even during 4K recording. You can easily verify that 4K video recordings are sharply focused with 8.8-megapixel in-camera still frame grabs.

GPS and optional Wi-Fi for a better workflow

The EOS 1D X Mark II's built-in GPS system helps you tag your images with location data and automatically adjusts the time and timestamp settings. The camera can use GPS together with the WFT-E8A wireless file transmitter (not included) to quickly upload geotagged images when you're shooting in remote locations.

Recording Features

Lens Compatibility: The Canon EOS-1D X Mark II is compatible with all Canon lenses in the EF lineup (with the exception of EF-S and EF-M lenses).

Rugged Exterior Body: The EOS-1D X Mark II's magnesium alloy chassis is designed to endure almost any condition. All of the camera's controls, buttons, and external covers are dust- and water-resistant. The durable shutter mechanism is designed to shoot 300,000 cycles.

Viewfinder: The EOS-1D X Mark II features an eye-level pentaprism viewfinder that offers 100 percent coverage vertically and horizontally. The built-in diopter lets you adjust the focus of the viewfinder to your own eyesight. The viewfinder has a built-in eyepiece shutter, which blocks stray light from entering the camera while taking a picture without looking at the viewfinder.

Clear View LCD Touchscreen Monitor: The EOS-1D X Mark II features a 3.2" Clear View II TFT color LCD monitor with approximately 1.62-million dots. The touchscreen allows you to choose an AutoFocus point by touching the subject on the screen. You can also add grid lines to aid you in composing your shots, and a dual-axis electronic level that displays both roll and pitch in 1-degree increments.

Live View: The Live View Function enables you to compose and shoot directly from the camera's 3.2" LCD monitor. You can zoom in and navigate the composition at up to 10x normal size for critical focusing and attention to detail. Live View Function can be used remotely via computer through the USB connection, if desired.

20.2 MP CMOS Sensor: The EOS-1D X Mark II features a high-resolution, full-frame (35.9 x 23.9 mm) CMOS sensor with approximately 21.5-million total pixels and 20.2-million effective pixels.

Dual DIGIC 6+ Image Processors: The camera is equipped with dual DIGIC 6+ Image Processors, which can process images at full resolution up to 16 frames-per-second, as well as 4K/60p videos. The combination of the CMOS sensor and Dual DIGIC 6+ processors help to give you high quality images that are recorded with speed and accuracy.

Recording Media: The EOS-1D X Mark II has dual memory card slots to accommodate both Compact Flash and CFast Memory cards. The camera can record images on Type I CompactFlash Cards, including UDMA 7 cards. The camera is also compatible with new CFast 2.0 memory cards. When both types of cards are loaded into the camera, you can choose to record either on a CF card or a CFast card, or to both simultaneously. No recording media is supplied with the camera. The number of images the camera can take in a single burst is as follows (Full = shooting is possible until the memory card becomes full):

Image-Recording Quality Compact Flash Card CFast Card
Standard UDMA 7 CFast 2.0
Large JPEG 140 Full Full
RAW 59 73 170
RAW + Large JPEG 48 54 81

Image Recording Formats: The camera records 3:2 still images in JPEG and RAW (14-bit) formats. Simultaneous RAW+JPEG recording is also possible. In addition, the camera can record 4K Motion JPEG video (AAC audio) and Full HD video in the MOV format (H.264 video, Linear PCM audio). Sound is recorded with the built-in monaural microphone, an optional external stereo microphone, or from the line input. You can select from the following image sizes and formats:

  • JPEG: You can choose from the following JPEG resolutions: Large (20MP: 5472 x 3648), Medium 1 (12.7MP: 4368 x 2912 pixels), Medium 2 (8.9MP: 3648 x 2432) and Small (5.0MP: 2736 x 1824 pixels). For each resolution, you can set the compression between 1 and 10 (1-5 Normal; 6-10 Fine).
  • 14-bit RAW: The RAW file format records the image data as captured by the camera CMOS sensor without further processing and converts it to digital data and records it onto the card as is. RAW images can be adjusted, then developed and produced into JPEG or TIFF images using the provided software. You can choose from the following RAW resolutions: RAW (20MP: 5472 x 3648), M-RAW (11.2MP: 4104 x 2736), or S-RAW (5MP: 2736 x 1824). You can also record a large JPEG image simultaneously with any sized RAW image (RAW, M-RAW, S-RAW).
  • 4K Motion JPEG: The camera can record 4K video (4096 x 2160) at bit rates of 59.94p, 50.00p, 29.97p, 25.00p, 24.00p, 23.98p.

    • High-Speed: maximum 14 fps; 16 fps during Live View shooting
    • Low-Speed: maximum 3 shots per second
  • Self-Timer: The camera will record an image 2 or 10 seconds after pressing the shutter button.
  • Silent Shooting: The shooting sound for silent shooting is quieter than normal. The internal mechanical operation is not executed until you return the shutter button to its halfway position. You can shoot Silent Singles, Silent High Speed (at approx. 5 fps maximum), or Silent Low Speed (at approx. 3 fps maximum).

Vertical Grip: The camera bottom has vertical-grip buttons and a dial that allows you to operate the camera more comfortably while taking vertical photographs. You can switch the vertical-grip controls on or off as needed.

Built-in GPS: The camera's built-in GPS can receive satellite navigation signals from GPS satellites (USA), GLONASS satellites (Russia), and the Quasi-Zenith satellite system (QZSS)(Japan). The receiver provides geotag information, such as latitude, longitude, and elevation, which can be appended to still images and movies you shoot. The GPS logging function captures GPS information at regular intervals so you can record the route of your travels. The shooting location of geotagged images, as well as the GPS logs, can be displayed on a map on your computer. Time and date information obtained from the GPS signals can also be used to set the camera's internal clock, and can be added to your photos and movies.

Ethernet: The EOS-1D X Mark II has an RJ-45 Ethernet terminal for connecting the camera to your local network.

Optional Wi-Fi: With the optional WFT-E8A Wireless File Transmitter, you can wirelessly upload images from your camera to your computer, smart phone, or tablet. The transmitter attaches to the camera and provides ultra high speed image transfer (up to 433 Mbps) over a wireless network (IEEE 802.11ac/n/a/g/b). It transmits on both the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands, and has a range of up to 492 feet. In addition to image transfer, the iOS and Android app lets you use your smart device as a remote control for still and video capture. The EOS-1D X Mark II has a 12-pin System Extension Terminal to accommodate the WFT-E8A.

EOS Webcam: Using Canon's EOS Webcam Utility software, you can use the camera as a webcam and livestream from a remote setup. You will need to connect the camera to your computer, using the included USB cable. While you are streaming, you can also record the video internally on the memory card. The software works with many of your favorite streaming apps, including YouTube Live, Zoom, Skype, Facebook Live, Microsoft Teams, Apple FaceTime, and Messenger. EOS Webcam Utility is compatible with Windows 10 (32- or 64-bit) and macOS Catalina, macOS Mojave, and macOS High Sierra.

AF System: The EOS-1D X Mark II has a newly developed, high-precision Area AF sensor with 61 manually-selectable points, including 41 cross-type, high-precision AF points for exacting and fast focusing no matter the subject. New AI Servo AF III+ focus tracking features improved algorithms that help improve stability, reliability, and focus, no matter the situation.

Shooting Modes: The EOS-1D X Mark II offers the following shooting modes:

  • Program AE: This is a general-purpose shooting mode, the camera automatically sets the shutter speed and aperture value to suit the scene's brightness
  • Shutter-priority AE: In this mode, you set the shutter speed and the camera automatically sets the aperture value to suit the brightness of the subject
  • Aperture-priority AE: In this mode, you set the desired aperture value and the camera sets the shutter speed automatically to suit the subject brightness
  • Manual Exposure: In this mode, you set both the shutter speed and aperture value as desired
  • Bulb Exposures: When bulb is set, the shutter is open during the time you keep pressing the shutter button fully. Bulb is useful when a long exposure is necessary for capturing night scenes, fireworks, the night sky, etc.
  • Custom (C1, C2, C3): You can register current camera settings, such as shooting functions, menu functions, and custom functions, and store them as one of three available Custom Shooting Modes.

Exposure Compensation: In Program AE, Shutter-priority AE, or Aperture-priority AE modes, exposure compensation is used to alter the camera's standard exposure setting. You can make the image look lighter (increased exposure) or darker (decreased exposure). The exposure compensation amount can be set up to +/-5 stops in 1/3-stop or 1/2-stop increments.

Auto Exposure Bracketing: With auto exposure bracketing (AEB), the camera automatically changes the exposure level up to +/-3 stops in 1/3-stop increments for three successive shots.

AE Lock: AE lock enables you to lock the exposure at a different place from the point of focus. After locking the exposure, you can recompose the shot while maintaining the desired exposure level. This feature is useful for backlit and spotlighted subjects.

63-Zone Dual-Layer Metering Sensor: The EOS-1D X Mark II features a 360,000-pixel RGB+IR metering sensor, and 216-zone TTL open-aperture metering. You can select from the following metering modes:

  • Evaluative Metering: The camera's standard metering mode suited for most subjects even under backlit conditions, after detecting the main subject's position, brightness, background, front and back lighting conditions, etc, the camera sets the proper exposure.
  • Partial Metering: Effective when the background is much brighter than the subject due to backlighting, etc, uses approximately 6.2% of the viewfinder area, weighted at the center.
  • Spot Metering: For metering a specific part of the subject, uses approximately 1.5% of the viewfinder area at the center.
  • Center-weighted Average Metering: Metering is weighted at the center and then averaged for the entire scene

ISO Speed: The camera's ISO speed can be set between 100 and 51200 in 1/3-stop increments to suit your shooting conditions. In addition the camera features an Auto ISO setting which allows the camera to automatically set the ISO speed. The ISO Speed is fixed to 400 with flash, and during "bulb" shooting. The Custom Function feature allows you to expand the ISO Range to ISO 50 (L) for the lowest speed, and ISO 204800 (H2) or ISO409600 (H3) for the highest speed.

External Flash: The camera is compatible with Canon's external EX-series Speedlites (sold separately) mounted to the hot shoe, with functions settable with the camera. It has no built-in flash. Non-Canon flash units can synchronize with the camera at 1/300 or 1/250 sec. or slower. The camera's PC terminal can be used with flash units having a sync cord.

Picture Style: By selecting a picture style you can achieve various effects matching your photographic expression or the subject. You can also adjust the Sharpness, Contrast, Saturation and Color tone of each Picture Style. Picture Style selections include: Auto, Standard , Portrait, Landscape, Fine Detail, Neutral, Faithful, Monochrome, and User Defined 1-3.

White Balance: You can choose from the following white balance settings:

  • Auto: The camera sets the white balance automatically according to shooting conditions -- Ambience priority or White priority selectable; color temperature: 3000-7000 K.
