"Natural Sound" Concept: Yamaha, with a long history of over 125 years as a musical instrument maker, also has a high reputation for HiFi components. Yamaha's A-S501 integrated amplifier takes advantage of this rich experience and high technological expertise. Based on the concept of "Natural Sound", for reproducing all music as it really sounds, and built with scrupulous care from circuit design to basic sound production, the A-S501 reproduces high sound quality and musically rich sound.

Proprietary Yamaha Technologies: The Yamaha AS-501 integrated amplifier employs proprietary Yamaha technologies for optimum performance and sound reproductions.

  • ToP-ART Design: When processing and transmission of the audio signal is simple and direct there is less chance of it being affected by noise and distortion. Yamaha's amplifier design technology called "ToP-ART" features an I/O (input to output) Direct Symmetrical Design, with left and right channels organized in a straight, symmetrical layout for highest signal purity.
  • ART (Anti-Resonance and Tough): In addition, the ART (Anti-Resonance and Tough) Base bottom chassis and a solid center bar provide high-rigidity support and vibration damping.

High Current Amplifier: The Yamaha A-S501 features a dynamic, high current stereo amplifier with low impedance drive capability. The amp is rated at 85 watts x 2-channels, measured from 20-20 kHz into 8 with 0.019% THD (100 watts x 2-channels, measured from 20-20 kHz into 6 with 0.038% THD).

High Quality Parts: Custom-made power transformer, custom-made block capacitors, two direct signal path speaker relays, one-point grounding system, aluminum-extruded heat sinks and other top-quality parts effortlessly handle demanding audio signal conditions. The quality of each individual part, as well as how they work together, basically determines the sound quality of any component. Yamaha uses only very high quality parts, carefully selected and tested.

Sophisticated Front-Panel Design: With a beautifully simple and unique design inherited directly from Yamaha's HiFi audio components, this amplifier also boost an easy-to-operate button layout. The aluminum front-panel has a richly textured silver hairline finish. The control knobs are also of the same luxurious construction as used on our top-end models. The rotary encoder makes it quick and easy to select input sources. The luxury hairline finish material offers a nice tactile feeling. LEDs clearly show which source is selected, so you can easily switch sources even in a dark room


Pure Direct Mode: The Pure Direct mode causes the music signals to travel the shortest possible circuit route, bypassing the buffer amp and the tone, loudness and balance controls to virtually eliminate any signal degradation for the purest sound quality.

Variable Loudness Control: The A-S501 also feature a new analog loudness control on the front-panel that uses electronic volume for higher sound quality, which lets you adjust the loudness effect as desired. Separate from the overall volume, this controls the balance of the low- and high- frequency sounds, providing full tonal range at any volume level; compensating for the natural loss in the human ear of high and low frequencies at soft levels.

Tone Controls: The integrated amplifier features independent bass (20 Hz) and treble (20 kHz) controls so you can increase or decrease the low and high frequency response (+/-10dB). You can also adjust the output balance of the left and right speakers.

Impedance Switch: The integrated amplifier features a rear-panel impedance switch to match the impedance level of the speakers connected. Choose High or Low:

  • High: Select High if using one set (A or B) of speakers with impedance of 6-ohm or higher; when bi-wiring the impedance of the speaker must also be 6-ohms or higher.
  • Low: Select Low if using one set (A or B) of speakers with the impedance of 4-ohm to 6-ohm; if using two sets (A and B) of speakers simultaneously, the impedance of each speaker must be at least 8-ohms; when bi-wiring the impedance of the speaker must also be 4-ohms to 6-ohms.

Simple Remote Control: The clean, simple design of the remote control provides easy-to-understand one-hand operation. The easy-to-use design makes it simple to adjust song volume and order. The remote has a sophisticated looking hairline finish that matches the design of the amplifiers. You can also use the remote to control a Yamaha CD/SACD player.

Auto Power Standby: The amplifier has a power management function that detects when it hasn't been used for a long time (about 8 hours) even though the power is on, and automatically shifts it into standby mode. So even if you forget to turn it off, power consumption will be minimized.


Gold-Plated Terminals: The Yamaha A-S501 has gold-plated terminals for all of its inputs and outputs. These gold-plated terminals ensure a high quality connection that prevents signal loss.

Analog & Digital Inputs: The Yamaha A-S501 integrated amplifier offers analog & digital inputs for connection of a variety of home audio components.

  • RCA + Phono: The Yamaha integrated amplifier is equipped with six analog stereo (RCA) inputs for connecting external analog audio sources, including a turntable. The Phono input can be used to connect a turntable with an MM phono cartridge to play vinyl records. The unit's Phono input also features a ground terminal.
  • Optical & Coaxial Digital Inputs: The A-S501 is equipped with both optical (toslink) and coaxial (RCA) digital audio inputs. The optical and coaxial inputs will accept 2ch PCM (not Dolby Digital/DTS). The audio stays in the digital domain, giving you pure, pristine dynamic sound for all your entertainment sources, from sports and other programs to movies and concerts.

Recording Outputs: There are also two pair of RCA outputs for recording audio through the amplifier to recording device.

A & B Speaker Terminals: The Yamaha integrated amplifier features binding post terminals for its A & B speaker outputs. You can use the A & B speaker outputs to power two pair of speakers, or bi-wire a single pair of compatible speakers. The terminals are not 5-way binding posts because a plastic collar prevents their use with spade lugs and they are too far apart for dual banana plugs.

Sub Output: A terminal for connecting a subwoofer is provided, allowing you to increase the bass output of your system for a more powerful sound with better overall sound quality

Headphone Output: The A-S501 integrated amplifier is equipped with a front-panel 1/4" headphone output for connecting a pair of headphones (sold separately). The headphone output and speaker outputs will work simultaneously; you will need to rotate the speaker selector switch on the front-panel to the Off position to turn off the sound from your connected speakers.

After hours/days of research I settled on this amplifier because it has three things that every other amplifier in its price range lacks (or has 2/3 options): 1) Phono input - everyone seems to be getting back into records these days and I am no different. The manual indicates that the maximum power per channel at 6 ohms is 100 watts per channel - it only gives the minimum watts per channel minimum for 8 ohms and 6 ohms, so for 4 ohms the minimum watts per channel is in excess of 100. Plus the "dynamic power per channel (IHF), which I understand as the maximum at any moment or headroom, is 185 watts per channel at 4 ohms; ironically, in this category the manual does give us the power rating for 8 ohms, 6 ohms and 4 ohms. Again, the manual does not give a minimum watts per channel rating for 4 ohms while it does indicate that it is 85 watts per channel for 8 ohms and 100 watts per channel for 6 ohms. As you can see, as the ohms go down the power goes up, so it is accurate to say it will have more minimum power at 4 ohms than it has at 6 ohms, so it would be in excess of 100 watts per channel minimum for 4 ohm speakers with the ability to produce peak or headroom power at 185 watts per channel for 4 ohm speakers. Looks to me that you would have to use analog via RCA type connectors. If you wanted to connect using one of the digital cables you need to purchase the dacmagic plus. [ UncleDave7  Jun 06, 2018 ]
I see nothing in the specs that would indicate that the tuner input is any different than the other inputs. There is no mention of a low band filter in the manual so I assume (with 51% confidence) that there is none. The Toslink and coax inputs both accept PCM stereo signals. Any difference between the two would be more a result of the cable you are using. I personally can not tell much difference but then I use consumer-grade cables. The opinion of some reviewers is that the coax is slightly better unless you use a high-quality optical cable - AudioQuest, for example. You can have one device connected to Toslink and another connected to coax and select either from the front panel. Hope this helps. [ Howard  May 25, 2018 ]

I don't have any Bose speakers so, I can't say for sure, However, my advice is to look at the spec.'s on the Bose speakers. Most speakers are 8 Ohm speakers and they may require a minimum amount of power to drive them. For example I have some old AR-3 speakers that were 4 Ohm speakers and required a minimum of 25 Watts per speaker, just to start to drive them. However, it is very hard to find an Amp that will put out the 4 Ohms to drive my speakers. This particular unit has a switch on the back to drive either 4 Ohm, or 8 Ohm speakers, which is what I was looking for. According to the spec's for this unit, this unit will put out 100 Watts per channel @ 4 Ohms, which should be more than enough to drive my speakers. If the Bose speakers are 8 Ohm speakers, which are much more common, see what the minimum spec's are for driving them at 8 Ohms. According to the spec sheet for this unit, this unit will put out at least 85 Watts per channel and I suspect that the Bose speakers requirements will be under that amount, which will be OK, but I am not sure. Check the Bose speaker Spec Sheet to see what the requirements actually are. Another concern would be to note what is the maximum amount of power that the Bose speakers will take. In earlier years, I have blown out some speakers by applying much more power to the speakers than they were designed to take, but fortunately for me the particular speakers that blew were kind of cheap so the lesson wasn't very costly, but I took note for future considerations. I'm sorry, but I don't think that I can answer your question. I do note that there are 2 sets of RCA Out connections on the back of the unit, but I have no idea if they would as a pre-amp. I assume that each set might be able to be used as a tap monitor loop because of the in and out function, but that was not my reason for purchasing this particular unit. I have a pair of Acoustic Research AR-3 speakers that I purchased back in the middle 50's that were some really great speakers for my purposes and I had a Heathkit Amp that I constructed from a kit in the same time period to drive them. My amp lasted quite a few years, but it had old style fuses to protect the device. The old fuses were no longer made and I would blow the fuses pretty regular. So, recently, a recommended replacement fuse was put in the amp and the amp burned. So much for the amp. My main problem was that the speakers were 4 ohm speakers and very few, if any, companies made a reasonably priced amp that would provide the 4 ohms required to drive the speakers. This unit has the ability to put out the 4 ohms and have more than enough power to drive my speakers and no fuses to buy. The holidays are here now and I haven't had enough time to hook everything up, so I don't know how they will work, however, I suspect that the old speakers just might blow before the new amp does. In any case, I don't have an answer for Mike D's problem and I am hoping that I will be able to relive those wonderful days of my youth, when I finally am able to finally get this unit hooked up and operating and listening to my old AR-3 speakers. The Yamaha 501 should not have any problem powering the speakers that you are looking at. The amp can deliver 85 watts into an 8 ohm load and 100 watts per channel into 6 ohm speakers. Your speakers recommend 50-120, so you will be in the sweet end of that range with the 501. My experience with the Yamaha and bookshelf speakers rated at 88 decibel sensitivity is quite powerful and high volume levels at at about a 12 o'clock volume setting. My speaker have a nominal impedance of 8 ohms, your 6 ohm speakers would get a bit more power out of the amp. Hope this helps. [ Arthur  Aug 11, 2017 ]

You should be able to record any source that you are listening to onto your tape deck or cd recorder by attaching them to either the line 2 or line 3 inputs and rec outputs as described on page 9 of the owners manual. I have not done this myself yet, but it should be rather straightforward. I definetly do recommend this amp as I am very happy with pure sound quality and ample power that it provides. Generally, an integrated amplifier will sound much better than a receiver. however, I had a HK Blu-ray/ tuner /amp a BD model I think all built in along side this exact Yamaha. While the HK was good, the Yamaha was an over all more detailed and better amp.My suggestion is why don't you purchase the integrated and try it in your own environment that way you be the judge. Yes, the 501 has a built-in preamp, but if your TT has it's own preamp just connect through Line 1, 2,or 3. I never tried two preamps, but I'm sure it would cause considerable sound distortion. [ John  May 09, 2016 ]

Ed i have a non-preamp numark going through my 501. naturally the volume is much lower than my tascam cdrw and kenwood tape deck ( which have 5 and 3 watts of power.) i can only imagine your turn table's extra power will ad to total quality. JON [ jon  May 07, 2016 ]
Edward you don't want to go through two (2) pre-amps. If you cannot by-pass your built-in pre-amp on your turntable, then you want to connect to either the 'Tuner' input or 'Line 1' input on the back of the device. The turntable pre-amp that is included with this Yamaha integrated amp is fine though limited to MM (moving magnet), not MC (moving coil). This is a very good sounding IA but give it some time. I did not like it at first, but after two weeks of running it (burn in) it sounded great! It also has plenty of power! Kevin [ Kevin  May 06, 2016 ]
I would connect the turntable to one of the line inputs, since it has already been preamplified. I would NOT connect to the phono input, as I would expect real distortion from two gain stages. I haven't used it so I don't know, but in the past you need an output, not an input into another device that can "record" the incoming signal. There is no device on or no media to insert the unit. The A-S501 has no Internet connected services. It's purely a stereo amplifier that will power speakers and take various analogue and digital inputs. I use mine with an Apple TV connected via optical input and play Spotify through the Apple TV. Works great! [ Samuel  Jun 03, 2015 ]

Not that I find but it is Bluetooth ready. I purchased the Yamaha YBA-11 adapter and it works great with Android phone and IPad. So, I would think you could play through Spotify that way [ Eugene  Jun 03, 2015 ]

Very eas easily. I have a pair of rf-82s and it sounds wonderful through this amp. The 82s are very efficient at 98 db per watt. My back up amp is only rated at 10 watts and the 82's scream. [ N1K  Feb 24, 2015 ]
I asked Yamaha repair techs this question and was told that even though it isn't listed in the manual, the sub out filters out anything above 90Hz. [ Christopher  Mar 12, 2016 ]
I forwarded your question to an Advisor and they responded with the following: There is not a separate subwoofer crossover on the amplifier. You would need to adjust and control this from the subwoofer itself. The bass control affects the speakers and subwoofer and it is set at 400 Hz. Plastic. Unfortunately makes a high quality device feel less so. But don't let the cheap knobs overly influence your purchase. It's performance is excellent, so far, with tuner, CD, cassette deck (still holding on to the past), and Bluetooth inputs. [ Eugene  Dec 26, 2014 ]
