About the Garmin Edge® 820

Ken Nail

When it's more than a bike ride

I've learned through experience that serious training requires more than just "going by feel." When you've got big goals and are pushing for peak performance, you need a serious tool — like Garmin's Edge 820 cycling computer. This powerful bike computer does more than just record how far and how fast you've gone. When used with optional tools like a powermeter and heart rate monitor, it records valuable metrics from your rides, then works in conjunction with Garmin Connect to provide a detailed analysis of your performance, with valuable insights like VO2 max calculations, recovery time advice, and advanced cycling dynamics. Bottom line? You'll train smarter and improve more quickly.

Garmin Edge 820 2.3" Touchscreen Cycling GPS

Edge 820 tracks your location on the display.

Situation awareness

The Edge 820 taps into the power of your iOS® or Android™ smartphone with a suite of features accessed through the free Garmin Connect™ Mobile app. You'll enjoy features like live tracking, social media sharing, and weather reports, both during and after your ride. Plus, the Edge 820 transfers ride data to your smartphone via Bluetooth®, so you can share the details with your circle of friends immediately. Edge 820 tracks you in real time.

Real-time ride segment results

Garmin Connect also provides you with real-time ride segment results when you're riding — so you'll know right away if you've bagged the KOM prize for your favorite climb, or beaten your training buddy's best on your favorite sprint. Garmin's Group Ride feature keeps track of other similarly equipped riders in your group, so you'll know how you stack up with the rest of the group. And if you're a Strava addict, you'll really dig challenging yourself with Strava Live Segments. Finally, if the worst happens, Incident Detection will notify your contacts if it detects a possible crash.

Stay on course

The Edge 820's navigation tools will keep you heading in the right direction, with onboard mapping data that isn't dependent on cell coverage, including free map updates. If you need a ride of a certain distance, enter your mileage goal, and Edge 820 will calculate three cycling-friendly routes to choose from, complete with elevation profiles. If you want to take charge, you can create route maps directly on the Edge 820, using the map, plus info you've downloaded from Garmin Connect.

Analyze your efforts

The Edge 820 is compatible with ANT+-enabled power meters (not included), including Garmin's innovative Vector™ power meter system, so you can track your power output in watts when you ride — one of the most effective training methods available. And when it's paired with a heart rate monitor (not included), the Edge 820 tracks your heart rate, so you can train in the proper heart-rate zone to optimize your workout. Plus, you can customize the touchscreen to display the info that you want to see while you're riding.

Even without optional tools, the Edge 820's high-sensitivity GPS receiver records speed, distance, time, plus ascent and descent. A built-in barometric altimeter yields precise elevation measurements. You can compare successive rides over the same route with the Courses feature, and you can compete against past performances. The 820's screen also displays Auto Pause, Auto Lap and temperature readings. Plus it'll even tell you what gear you're riding in, when it's integrated with Shimano DI2 electronic shifters.

Product Research

Features

Overview: The Garmin Edge 820 is a compact, GPS-enabled advanced bicycle computer with connected features, such as live tracking, social media sharing, weather, and the ability to send and receive courses. The Edge 820 is waterproof (IPX7 rated), and comes with two standard handlebar mounts, and the Out Front Bike Mount, so you can mount it on multiple bikes.

Touchscreen Display: The Edge 820 has a 2.3" backlit, high resolution color touchscreen LCD (1.4"W x 1.9"H), with a display resolution of 200 x 265 pixels. You can maneuver through the menus and make selections directly on the touchscreen display. The display will show your elapsed time, speed, distance, time of day, and calories burned (if applicable).

Maps: The Edge 820 is equipped with Garmin Cycle Maps (US 2016.10) for bike-specific, turn-by-turn navigation. The maps include roads and bike paths that can be used for routing, plus elevation data and points of interest. You can also search for specific addresses. You can select the map orientation to suit your needs: North Up, Track Up, or 3D mode. The Edge 820 allows you to add maps to the device, such as maps of other areas or map updates.

GPS: The Edge 820 has a high-sensitivity GPS receiver that calculates your position faster. When you turn on the unit outdoors, it finds satellites quickly, so you can start your ride quicker. The time of day and the date are automatically set by the GPS receiver. If training indoors, you can turn off the GPS receiver to save battery power.

GLONASS: In addition to the GPS (Global Positioning System), the Edge 820 is compatible with GLONASS (GLObal NAvigation Satellite System), operated by Russia. This gives the device increased performance and accuracy in challenging environments, and faster position acquisition. By default, the unit is set to GPS + GLONASS. For increased battery life, you can select GPS Only.

Strava: The Edge 820 is compatible with Strava, a cycling and running website and mobile app, which lets you set goals, training plans, get power analysis, and compare your results with other athletes in your age and weight class. You can download Strava segments to the Edge 820 for competing against your previous segment times, or others who ride the same route. Segment results appear in real time, showing the Distance to Go and Time Ahead (or Behind) your competitor. A free 3-month premium membership to Strava is included with the Edge 820 Bundle.

Smartphone Compatible: You can wirelessly link your device to a smartphone (Android or iOS) using the Garmin Connect Mobile app. At the end of your ride, you can transfer the ride data directly to your phone via Bluetooth. Using the app, you can analyze the details of your ride, or share it with others. You can also search out courses and workouts stored at Garmin Connect, download them to your smartphone, and send them to your Edge 820 wirelessly. Real-time weather updates and alerts can be sent from your smartphone to your device.

Live Tracking: Another connected feature of the Edge 820, Live Tracking, allows your friends and family to follow your races and training activities in real time. You can invite your followers via email or social media to view your live data on the Garmin Connect tracking page. Once they see your invitation, they can click to follow your progress on a map and see your stats.

GroupTrack: A new Garmin feature, GroupTrack, lets you keep track of other riders in your riding group. If you find yourself separated from the rest of your group, you can see where they are along the route on the Edge 820 display. Each rider that wants to be visible to others must have a LiveTrack-compatible Edge or Forerunner device, and be connected to Garmin Connect. You will need an Edge 820 or Edge Explore 820, connected to Garmin Connect, to be able to see other riders on your map.

Controls: Most of the controls are located on the touchscreen. On the Home screen, you can access your bike profile, change your activity profile, manage your history, courses, and workouts, and start a new ride. During your ride, you can use the front panel buttons to start/stop the timer and mark a new lap without having to look at the screen. The power and backlight button is located on the side.

Waterproof: The Edge 820 is waterproof to IEC Standard 60529 IPX7. It can withstand immersion in 1 meter of water for up to 30 minutes. The casing is totally sealed, including the front-mounted controls, and the USB port has a water-resistant cover to prevent corrosion.

ANT+: ANT+ is a wireless technology that allows certain accessories to communicate with the Edge 820. ANT+ sensors generally work within 10 feet of the unit. In addition, an increasing number of health clubs and fitness centers have ANT+ compatible equipment in their facilities, so you can use the same accessories separate from your device. Compatible Garmin ANT+ accessories include:

  • Heart Rate Monitor: When the Edge 820 is paired with the optional Premium Heart Rate Monitor, the unit tracks your heart beats per minute and calculates your calorie consumption as you train. You can train in a certain heart rate zone to improve your fitness level or compare your pace and heart rate to past performances.
  • Speed/Cadence Sensor: The optional Speed/Cadence Sensor measures your speed and pedaling strokes per minute. The Edge 820 has a Non-Zero Averaging option to let you include or exclude the zero values (when you're not pedaling) when calculating your power ratings.
  • Varia Bike Radar/Lights: Varia Rearview Radar and Smart Bike Lights work with the Edge 820 to keep you safe as you ride on the highway. Varia Rearview Radar can alert you of vehicles approaching from behind. Varia Smart headlights and tail lights integrate with the Edge 820 and change intensity with your speed.

Incident Detection: A built-in accelerometer can detect if you have difficulty along the route, and will send your location coordinates to an emergency contact. When an incident is detected, a message appears on your device and paired smartphone, indicating your contacts will be notified after 30 seconds have elapsed. If you do not need assistance, you can cancel the automated emergency message. You must be connected to Garmin Connect mobile app, with emergency contacts entered, for Incident Detection to properly function.

Auto Pause: The built-in timer will pause automatically when it detects you're not moving. The timer will restart when you resume your ride.

Auto Lap: The Auto Lap feature lets you automatically mark the lap at a specific position. This helps you compare your performance over different parts of a ride (i.e. a long climb or training sprints). You can also use Auto Lap to mark laps at a specific distance.

Data Storage: The Edge 820's built-in memory (approximately 16 MB) stores at least 200 hours of ride data. The unit not only has an odometer to keep track of your mileage, but includes data on your last ride, longest ride, fastest ride, and all rides. Ride data can be sent to your smartphone via Bluetooth using the Garmin Connect app.

User Profile: The Edge 820 allows you to enter data about yourself to create a User Profile. This data (gender, birth year, weight, and height) is used to calculate accurate ride data.

Bike Profile: In addition to User Profiles, the Edge 820 allows you to customize ten bike profiles. In order to accurately calculate the ride data, the bike weight, odometer value, crank length, and wheel size are used.

Garmin Connect: Free web-based Garmin Connect software lets you store your workout data for comprehensive analysis. Garmin Connect is used by cyclists worldwide, and presents your data in an easily understood manner, with maps, reports, and suggested activities. You can create fitness goals and send them to your device. As you complete activities toward your goals, they are tracked on both the device and on Garmin Connect. In addition, the Garmin Training Center software lets you track and analyze your fitness activities and create workouts to send to your device, without requiring Internet access after the initial download.

Courses: The Edge 820 can save your ride data as you train. From that saved data, you can use Garmin Connect software to create courses that you can follow in the future. Each time you follow the course, the unit will compare your time to previous rides, or to other riders, and let you set performance goals. As you ride along the course, the display will indicate distance and time to upcoming maneuvers.

File Transfer: The Edge 820 allows you to transfer courses, segments, and workouts from one compatible Edge device to another, wirelessly via Bluetooth. Both devices must be within range of each other (approximately 3 meters apart).

Virtual Partner: During your workout, you can use the Virtual Partner to help you meet your goals. The Virtual Partner rides along with you and provides incentive for you to keep up or stay ahead. If necessary, you can adjust the speed of the Virtual Partner during the ride.

USB Port: A Micro USB port is provided on the back of the unit for charging and connecting to your computer. A water-resistant cap keeps moisture out.

Power Requirements: The unit is powered by a built-in Lithium-Ion battery. It charges via the included USB cable when connected to your computer. The battery charge level is expressed as a percentage on the display. When in GPS training mode, the Edge 820 will provide approximately 15 hours of battery life. Battery life with typical usage is 12 hours. Extremely cold temperatures will also reduce battery life.

Mounting: The Edge 820 can be mounted to your bicycle's handlebars or stem. Two sizes of O-rings are included for best fit. Two complete mounts are included to allow you to use the unit on multiple bikes. The included Out-Front Bike Mount lets you put the device in front of the handlebars for easier, heads-up positioning and increased safety.
