Our take on the Shure PGA98H by Crutchfield's Ralph Graves
If you're looking to step into the world of professional sound but need to watch your budget, check out Shure PG ALTA™ microphones. PG ALTA mics combine Shure engineering excellence, durability, and great sound. Best of all, you'll find a model for almost any application — studio, home recording, or live venue.
An instrumental mic for wireless systems
Shure made their PGA98H condenser microphone for use with brass or woodwind instruments. Just clip the mic on to the bell of the instrument, and use the flexible gooseneck to position the mic. The mic's cardioid polar pattern picks up audio from the source while rejecting unwanted noise. And don't worry — the PGA98H can take it. Its tough cast zinc housing will hold up to years of recording sessions and gigs. The mic comes with a TA4F connector for use with wireless systems.

Overview: The Shure PG ALTA series of microphones is designed and manufactured with the highest quality and construction. The PGA 98H microphone is designed specifically for horn and woodwind performance and recording. It has a horn clamp with a flexible, discrete gooseneck design. At the end of the 5' cable is a TA4F connection for plugging into a wireless bodypack transmitter. The PGA 98H also comes with a foam windscreen, and a zippered storage pouch.
Note: This TQG version of the PGA 98H cannot be plugged directly into a mixer or audio console. It is designed for wireless systems, and requires a wireless bodypack transmitter with a TA4F connector. The XLR version of the PGA 98H is compatible with wired microphone systems.
Pickup Pattern: The PGA 98H has a cardioid polar pattern, which reduces feedback and rejects unwanted background noise. The microphone has dual mesh grilles with an arrow to indicate which direction to aim the microphone toward the source. The tailored response microphone cartridge is designed for clear reproduction of wind instruments sound sources.
Power Requirements: Condenser microphones require power to operate. For the PGA 98H-TQG, this power comes from the wireless transmitter to which it is connected. Unlike the PGA 98H-XLR, no preamplifier is included.
Construction: The microphone has an industrial design with a black metallic finish and grille for an unobtrusive visual presence.
Mounting: The PGA 98H comes with an integrated, spring-loaded horn clamp that allows you to attach the microphone directly to the horn of a woodwind or brass wind instrument. The flexible gooseneck lets you position the microphone exactly where you want. The included foam windscreen is recommended for outdoor performances.
Connector: The Shure PGA 98H has a 4-pin female TA4F connector at the end of its 5' cable. This connector plugs directly into many wireless bodypack transmitters.
