Crutchfield at CES: AKG N60 NC noise-canceling headphones
Our take on the AKG N60 NC by Crutchfield's Jeff Miller
Exceptional noise-cancellation in a travel-size package
The AKG N60 NC headphones fit comfortably and have active noise cancellation that's tuned to block out travel sounds.
I've lived with the irritating, incessant hum of the air ducts above my desk for a long time. To me, it often resembles the roars of jet engines on a crowded tarmac. But when I slipped the extra-light AKG N60 NC headphones on my ears and turned on the active noise cancellation, all the gnashing and grinding sounds seemed to fade away.
AKG's noise-canceling circuitry is fine-tuned to suppress the din and racket of travel, but it worked well in the office, too. Of course, headphones also need to sound good. Fortunately, AKG leaned on their music studio roots and these ultra-portable 'phones delivered.
AKG's studio-mastered sound
As the office sounds vaporized, the appropriately-titled track "Dissolve" by the LA-based band Private Island replaced the workplace hustle and bustle with chill-yet-powerful vibes. AKG headphones are standard equipment in many modern recording studios, so I wasn't surprised that the N60 NC 'phones produced detailed sound across all frequencies.
They were especially pleasant and memorable in the midrange. A tight drumbeat established a toe-tapping groove, allowing the guitar-driven melody to wash over me. The potent vocals pierced through the building riff and rhythm, with all the instruments sounding spread out around my head.
On-the-go design with inline remote and mic
The N60 NC's built-in rechargeable battery provides up to 30 hours of noise-canceling operation per charge. That's plenty of time for most plane or train trips while you watch movies, binge shows, listen to tunes — or just zone out in silence. You can also extend battery life with passive mode listening when you don't need noise-cancellation.
A one-button in-line remote lets you quickly answer phone calls. You can talk right through the headphones thanks to the built-in mic. When you get where you're going, these 'phones fold down to an incredibly compact bundle that fits into the included crescent-shaped carrying pouch.

Overview: The AKG N60 NC noise-canceling headphones are designed for travelers who want to hear their music, and only their music. With Active Noise Canceling technology, the distracting noise you encounter, from other travelers talking to the drone of airline engines, simply disappears. The headphones come with an audio cable with in-line remote, a USB charging cable, and an airline adapter for plugging into on-board entertainment. The N60 NCs feature a unique folding design for storage in the included compact padded pouch.
Active Noise Canceling: The N60 NC features high-performance, active noise-canceling technology to reduce ambient noise and create a quiet environment inside the headphones. This active circuit picks up ambient noise, reverses its polarity, and re-introduces the noise into the headphones to cancel out the external distractions. You can turn the ANC circuit on or off as needed, using the slide switch on the back of the left ear cup.
Rechargeable Battery: The Active Noise Cancellation circuit is powered by a built-in Lithium-Polymer rechargeable battery (3.7V, 320mAh) in the left ear cup. An LED inside the switch glows green to indicate the circuit is turned on, blinks green to let you know the battery needs charging, and glows red during charging. The battery charges in less than 3 hours, using the included USB charging cable. A fully charged battery provides approximately 30 hours of ANC use. You can listen to the headphones in passive mode using the audio cable at any time, even if the battery is exhausted.
Construction: The headphones are made of premium materials, such as aluminum, memory foam, and leather. The padded ear cups rest comfortably on your ears, while the closed back design keeps out much of the external noise.
Cable: The N60 NCs come with a 51" detachable straight audio cable for connecting to your music source. The cable terminates into a narrow, right angled 3.5mm stereo mini-plug. The cable has a universal, in-line 1-button remote/microphone that is compatible with most smartphones. The button allows you to answer/hang up your phone calls, as well as play/pause your music, and skip to the next track. The remote does not have volume control.
Folding Design: The headphones' unique 3D Axis folding mechanism allows you to fold them flat for storage or to pack in a suitcase or briefcase. The N60 NCs come with a padded neoprene storage pouch with a zippered closure.

Wanted some on ear headphones with noise reduction. I wear glasses a lot and can't do the total over the ear headphones. I wanted something other than earbuds. These are completely on par with the Bose as far as ANC (over the ear), but much more comfortable for me!!! [ TRACEY Dec 04, 2015 ]
2 questions already asked
2 answers How durable are the AKG N60 NC headphones? I have the Bose QC25 headphones and after 2 years of moderate use, the ear cups are falling apart. The stitching on the ear cups has come undone and the memory foam is exposed and can easily fall out. They still work, but they look ridiculous. [ H Mar 19, 2017 ]
I've had these for a year now and use them primarily for travel but also around the house. I was torn on buying these given I've had a Bose head set before. They have held up really well. Great set of headphones. [ Michael Mar 21, 2017 ]
Ive owned these headphones for almost 2 years with less moderate use and they still look and function like new. Love these headphones for travel. [ Jangjin Mar 20, 2017 ]
2 answers I recently purchased the akg noise cancelling headphones. They work very well, but i have 2 questions: 1/ is it OK to charge using an electrical outlet plug than accepts a USB input? & 2/ is there an indication light on the unit that lets you know it's charging and when fully charged (& if so, where is the indicator on the unit? Thank you, Richard [ Richard Dec 17, 2016 ]
I charge this N60NC using a 5VDC/3.1A USB charger built into a power adapter that is plugged into a wall outlet. The USB contacts of the AKG charging cord should face the contacts in the USB charging port. Now, the power-switch channel on the left ear can has two LED indicators. One LED is located at the top of the channel (right below the "NC" mark). With the power switch in OFF position, this LED shines red during charging, and goes off when the battery is fully charged. The other LED is located at the bottom of channel. With the power switch in ON position, this LED will shine green as long as you still have battery power. Footnote: if you left the power switch in the ON position during charging, both the green and the red LEDs will shine, but the red light will be partially covered by the power switch. Hope this helps. [ Moshe Jan 08, 2017 ]
You can charge the headphones by a wall outlet or even your computer. The lights for charging are actually behind the o/off switch. [ Michael Dec 19, 2016 ]
