About the Audio-Technica AT-LP3

Eric A.

A convenient turntable with built-in phono preamp

You really don't need a ton of equipment to get started listening to vinyl. The Audio-Technica AT-LP3 comes with a built-in phono preamp with pre-attached cables, so you have options. Plug directly into a pair of powered stereo speakers, or go through a receiver or outboard preamp — whichever is most convenient for you.
The Audio-Technica AT-LP3 is a smart - and smart-looking - way to play records.

Handy control options

You can push the Start button to begin playing a record, and then hit the Stop button to lift and return the tonearm and shut off the turntable. A tonearm Lift button is also included to let you raise and lower the arm without stopping the platter.

And as someone who has listened to the stylus bumping around in the final groove of a record for several minutes while finishing a tricky task, I'm personally fond of the auto stop feature: it lifts and returns the tonearm automatically when a record has played all the way through. What a relief!

Features

Fully Automatic Turntable: The Audio-Technica AT-LP3 belt-drive turntable offers fully automatic operation, so you can simply press the Start button to begin play and the Stop button to lift and return the tone arm and shut off the turntable (the stop function occurs automatically when a record has played all the way through). If you prefer manual control, a hydraulically damped lift control allows the stylus to be precisely and safely lowered and raised at any point on a record.

Balanced Tonearm w/ Dual Moving Magnet Phono Cartridge: The turntable's balanced straight tonearm comes with an uninstalled 1/2" mount universal headshell and AT91R Dual Moving Magnet phono cartridge with conical stylus, giving you excellent high-fidelity performance, plus the option to use other moving magnet or moving coil cartridges of your choosing.

Note: The headshell/cartridge/stylus assembly must be installed on the tonearm.

2-Speed Operation: The Audio-Technica AT-LP3 fully automatic turntable is equipped to play both 33-1/3 and 45 RPM records (adapter included).

Anti-Vibration Construction: The AT-LP3 is constructed of anti-vibration damping materials that limits low-frequency feedback. Resonance is further reduced by the turntable's die-cast aluminum platter and accompanying 4mm rubber damping mat.

Built-in Switchable  Preamplifier: The built-in switchable stereo phono/line-level preamplifier permits use of the AT-LP3 turntable with stereo systems having either magnetic-phono inputs or line-level (Aux) inputs; also allows convenient use of the turntable with most powered speakers.

Attached Stereo RCA Cable: The AT-LP3 turntable features an attached 40" stereo RCA output cable that enables connection to a home stereo, powered speakers and other components whether they have a dedicated turntable input or not.

Detachable Power Cord: The turntable comes with a detachable 6' AC power cord (2-prong).

Hinged Dust Cover: The Audio-Technica AT-LP3 turntable comes with a hinged dust cover that is also removable.

Two Available Colors: The Audio-Technica AT-LP3 turntable is available in black or white.

Q
Does this turntable have to connect to a receiver using the ground or can you simply connect the RCAs and place tape over the ground wire?
anthony  Feb 18, 2022

A
If you use the internal pre amp you do not need to connect the ground to the receiver. If you use the receivers phono pre amp you do need to connect the ground to the receiver in conjuncture with plugging the rca plugs into the phono input.
michael  Feb 18, 2022
A
the ground is a post w/screw terminal. would not reccomend this turntable.
carl c  Feb 18, 2022
A
If it has a hum,, it needs the ground wire connected
douglas  Feb 18, 2022
A
connect it with ground wire..
david  Feb 18, 2022
A
You can but it is not suggested as you can create a ground loop by not using it which in turn can cause audible 60-cycle hum.
tim  Feb 18, 2022
A
There is a switch on the back of the turntable as the listing shows. For the "line" setting you do not need to use the ground wire, however the unit you are plugging into must not be a powered amplifier. For the 'phono' setting you will need an amplifier that has a ground wire connection otherwise you will get a loud hum throughout your listening.
kenneth  Feb 18, 2022
A
My ground wire is connected to my receiver but I don't know if that is a requirement.

Q
hi if i buy an manual belt drive turntable and when it plays the last song of the record the tonearm returns back or have to do it manually?
jose  Sep 24, 2020
5 answers
A
I meant the tonearm returns automatically. Sorry for any confusion
eric  Oct 17, 2020
A
The tonearm does return manually.
eric  Oct 17, 2020
A
It would depend on which turntable you have. Most manuals, after the last track is played, will continue to turn with the tonearm in place until it is raised manually, and then shut off by the user. One model, the Music Hall Classic, will raise the tonearm, and then turn itself off. I have a Fluance RT-85 which, when the arm reaches the end of the record, will continue turning for another 15-20 seconds, and will then turn itself off, leaving the arm on the LP. While it takes a while longer to turn off than I would like, it is still better than not having this function.
joseph  Oct 15, 2020
A
A manual belt turntable requires you to return the tone arm manually. This Audio-Technica returns the tonearm automatically. Works well.
dan  Oct 15, 2020
A
The tonearm returns back after the last song.

Q
i just want to be sure i can plug this in to my ancient JVC rx707v receiver ( will replace in the near future ) ? thanks
michael  Sep 08, 2020

A
Yes, same cables as days of old.
eric  Sep 10, 2020
A
your receiver needs to have a phono jack or aux port. The older receivers have a phono port, but a lot of newer ones do not because turntables, until recently, were gone.
gene  Sep 09, 2020
Q
Can the dust cover be closed and still play an LP? I have cats that will be all too curious about it when it is playing.
susan  Jul 21, 2020

A
Yes, LP can be played with the cover closed.
gary  Jul 22, 2020
A
Yes, it plays with the cover closed. You can also start and stop playing an album with the buttons on the front without lifting the cover.
eric  Jul 22, 2020
A
yes ma'am
gene  Jul 21, 2020
A
Yes, it will play with the cover closed.
coy  Jul 21, 2020
A
Yes.
justin  Jul 21, 2020
A
Absolutely - in fact we prefer it closed to ensure dust does not get on the records while playing!

Q
What kind of speaker can directly connect to this turntable?
nohelia  Dec 10, 2019
4 answers
A
You would need an "active speaker", which is sometimes called a "powered speaker". This kind of speaker has a built-in amplifier.
james  Dec 31, 2019
A
To connect speakers directly to this turntable, you would need a set of powered speakers. These type of speakers have built in amplification, so that you do not need a separate amplifier to drive them One of our friendly advisors would love you to help you explore y our options! https://www.crutchfield.com/support/ContactUs.aspx
thomas  Dec 23, 2019 (Staff)
A
You need powered stereo speakers for the best result. I have used PSB Alpha speakers for many years - I see Crutchfield has a pair of powered PSB Alpha desktop speakers for a great (low) price. Highly recommended setup.
dan  Dec 23, 2019
A
I have not connected speakers to my turntable, but if it helps, it came with standard RCA terminals, so, if your speakers do not have matching jacks, you could probably get adapters for them.
joseph  Dec 23, 2019
Q
Silly question I know, but will the dust cover remain fixed (open) at a 45 degree angle, or slightly higher? I have a limited distance to a shelf where I want to place a turntable. If this dust cover only stays up at 90 degrees (like the U-Turn Orbit) it won't work for me.
craig  Jan 19, 2019

A
Hey Craig, sorry for the late reply. I was able to test mine out today and there is only one spot the dust cover stays open, which is about 55-60 degrees. It does not go past this or up to 90, but unfortunately it is not able to stay open at multiple angles. Hope this helps!
brandon  Feb 05, 2019
A
No question is silly. But to answer your question, no, if the cover isn't open completely, it closes rather hard. I used a small nightstand from Sauder as a turntable stand next to the entertainment center. No clearance problems that way, plus the turntable is isolated. Happy vinyling!
thomas  Jan 22, 2019
A
Slightly more than 45 degrees, I measure open height at approx 14.75 inches.
jim  Jan 21, 2019
A
It opens and stays at a 45 degree angle. What you see in the picture is how far it opens and doesn't open any further than that.
parker  Jan 21, 2019
A
Yes it will stay open at 45 degrees (or slightly higher.. I have it in a 15" opening and it works fine.
martin  Jan 21, 2019
A
The fully open position is as pictured, it appears to be 45 degrees. At this 45 degree full open the top of the lid is 12 inches above the base which is 2 1/2 inches tall. You will need 14 1/2" height between the shelf it sets on and the one above.
michael  Jan 21, 2019
A
I bought this turntable for a friend, but I believe it stays open at 90 degrees
kevin  Jan 20, 2019
A
The picture shows the heigh of the opening. It does not open to 90°
carol  Jan 20, 2019
A
My dust cover does not stay up in my cabinet. I can't say it requires 90 degrees elevation, but it is certainly more than 45 degrees. I just leave the cover off since the turntable is inside a closed cabinet.
robert  Jan 20, 2019
A
Not quite 90 degrees, but the total height from base to fully opened dust cover is 15"
paul  Jan 20, 2019
A
45 degrees, as shown in the product photo.

thomas  Jan 22, 2019

About twenty-four inches, and they are fixed at the turntable end, and cannot be replaced.
elroy  Jan 20, 2019
A
The cables are about twenty-four inches long, and there is no provision for replacing them with longer cables.
elroy  Mar 05, 2018
A
Cable is 3' long and can NOT be replaced
paul  Mar 05, 2018
A
The RCA cables provided are not attached, about 12 inches in length and can be replaced with longer cables.
linda  Mar 05, 2018

The,RCA,cablrs, are only 6 feet long. I bought separate coil of wire/cables so I could spread my speakets, across, the length of my living room. I think I bought th e 50 foot unit. Not at home but when I arrive home later tonight I can look up specs and actual item name. Lawrence Zierler
