A fresh take on a classic Klipsch tower speaker

For over 30 years Klipsch has delighted music lovers with their popular line of Forte series floor-standing speakers. They've outfitted their latest generation, the Forte III, with key upgrades that provide even richer sound than its predecessors. Among them is a newly designed midrange driver that uses the same horn-loaded design as their award-winning tweeter.

Klipsch Forte III Floor-standing speaker

The Klipsch Forte III features a massive rear-panel 15" passive radiator that reinforces the speaker's robust bass output.

Built to rock

The Forte III provides startlingly lifelike sound thanks to new titanium compression drivers in the midrange and tweeter sections. It's also impressively efficient, delivering terrific sound without needing a ton of power. A 12" woofer rounds out the low end with powerful, accurate bass.

Passive doesn't mean weak

On the back of the Forte III you'll find a hulking 15" passive radiator. This unpowered cone moves in tandem with the active 12" woofer to reinforce low-frequency notes. The result is tight, clean bass that fills large rooms with ease.

Proudly made in the USA

The Forte III is designed and hand-built in Hope, Arkansas. It's available in several attractive finishes including Black Ash, American Walnut, and Natural Cherry.

We are also proud to carry two super-limited finishes: Special Edition Matte Black, and Special Edition California Black Walnut. According to Klipsch, only 70 pairs each of these handsome speakers will ever be made.

Product Research

Features

The Forte III: First introduced in 1985, the Forte quickly established itself as the most popular Klipsch model. The elegant design and outstanding performance made the Forte a standout among its competitors. In 2017, Klipsch re-introduced the Forte as part of the Heritage speaker series. The new Forte III features updated cosmetics and the latest advancements in acoustic engineering, while maintaining the original charisma that made the Forte so popular.

3-Way Design: The Forte III hosts a three-way design utilizing a 12" woofer and horn-loaded midrange and tweeter. The new Forte III utilizes all new state of the art drivers including a 1.75" midrange and 1" tweeter titanium compression drivers for a smooth and powerful response. The Forte III's new midrange horn utilizes patented technology to improve coverage and control of the key mid-frequency band.

15" Passive Radiator: The Forte III's well-extended bass is found in the use of a rear-mounted passive radiator. A mammoth 15"in size, this sub-bass radiator operates on acoustic pressure generated by the woofer for greater bass output and extension.

Book-Matched Wood Veneers: Klipsch only uses book-matched wood veneers for the Heritage series. Each pair of Forte III loudspeakers is grain-matched using wood veneer panels that come from the same timber. The veneer leaves are kept in order as they are delicately sliced from the timber and precisely arranged to provide a mirror image at the splice joint - like turning the pages of a book. This gives each speaker a more aesthetically appealing and consistent appearance that is treasured more than any other cut of wood veneer. Each cabinet is carefully matched so that each speaker in the pair is practically indistinguishable from the other. The speakers move seamlessly together through the factory. Each finished product is inspected and labeled with sequential serial numbers, ensuring that each pair of speakers leave the factory as a meticulously crafted set.

Note: The Forte III real-wood veneer comes in four distinct finishes including Natural Cherry, Black Ash, and American Walnut - all designed to blend into your home's décor.

Dual Binding Post Speaker Terminals: The Klipsch Forte III loudspeaker has two sets of binding posts connected by jumpers. Using the dual binding posts, you can bi-amp or bi-wire the speakers. The binding post terminals will accept banana plugs (single only), pin-connectors, spade-connectors, and bare wire.

Placement: The Forte III has excellent bass extension and therefore offers a good degree of toe-in and placement options. However, the Forte features a rear-firing 15" passive radiator that requires the loudspeaker to be placed at least 1" away from the back wall. For optimal low-bass performance, it is recommended the loudspeaker be placed within 2"-10" of the back wall. This will provide the best low bass loading and enhance the low frequency extension of the loudspeaker.

Heritage Series (Made in the USA): The Klipsch Heritage Series is built and handmade in the USA at Klipsch's manufacturing facility in Hope Arkansas. They are meticulously handcrafted and assembled using the finest quality materials, even down to the highest-grade adhesives and fasteners (no detail goes unnoticed). Each Heritage Series loudspeaker utilizes Klipsch proprietary horn-loaded technology to bring a live music listening experience into the home. All Heritage Series loudspeakers are available in a variety high-quality wood veneers. Klipsch Heritage loudspeakers are built to rock the house and stand the test of time.  This is a speaker that will be handed down for generations to come,

Note: The Heritage Series consists of the La Scala II, Cornwall III, Heresy III, and Forte (all sold separately).

4 Principles of Klipsch Sound: Paul W. Klipsch believed four principles to be the foundation for great sound. They continue to drive the design of every new Klipsch speaker, today and tomorrow.

  • High Efficiency & Low Distortion: Klipsch horn technology is highly efficient, providing more accurate sound with less power and less distortion - resulting in louder, cleaner audio. Klipsch's Law: Efficiency is inversely proportional to distortion.
  • Controlled Directivity: Klipsch horn technology accurately directs sound to the proper locations, which, in turn, creates a more lifelike soundstage without wasting acoustic energy where sound is not needed or desired.
  • Wide Dynamic Range: The softest sounds are reproduced with remarkable clarity and the loudest sounds are delivered without harshness or distortion - with the greatest possible range between the softest and loudest sounds.
  • Flat Frequency Response: Audio is delivered without frequency bias - no unnatural highs, mids or lows - reproducing recorded sound as accurately as possible without colorization.

Customer Q&A

Q
Why are they sold individually when they come in consecutively-numbered matched pairs from the factory?

A
The price listed is per each. The purchase process cannot be completed without adding a second speaker to your cart. Call Crutchfield for their policies regarding B stock .. Buyers are probably still required to buy the pair (w/ consecutive serial numbers).

They aren't sold individually. You won't be able to actually purchase one. I had a problem with one and they had to replace both.
jason  Aug 20, 2019

At checkout you will see the instruction that the speaker is sold only in pairs. Possibly B stock is sold singly? Call Crutchfield and ask.

I have a Sony STR-DG500 multichannel AV receiver that is 8 ohms from 20-20,000 Hz rated 100 watts per channel min RMS. Would this work for these and would they play they were designed?

I see no problem matching up the Forte III with your Sony. I know nothing about AV receivers, but 8 ohms and 100 watts per channel, 20-20k is all you need. Everything I have is vintage Sansui or McIntosh, from 100 to 180 per channel, but you should have no problem. I have had a variety of high-end speakers, including Forte I and Forte II. The Forte III is just about the best you will ever find. So good, you might some day want to dump the Sony to get the best from them. Sony has always made some of the best audio electronics - solid and reliable. Klipsch speakers are easily the most efficient. But the Forte IIIs are in a very special class and will match up with the absolutely best amplifier you can dream of. I don't know the specs on the Sony and specs don't tell the whole story, but I speculate that the Forte IIIs way outmatch your amplifier - and most amplifiers. They will be the best you have ever heard with your Sony, but even better with a better amp.

That is plenty of power for those speakers. They are very large but don't require a huge amount of power to drive.

I Have a Pair of KEF 104/2 What would be a good amp for these speakers?

Hi Larry, I have my Forte speakers in a room that is 17ft. x 15ft. and I have a Yamaha RX-A 1080 amplifier driving them which is rated at 110 watts per channel. My set up is 5.2. This amp has abundance of power for my set up. More than your ears can handle. For reference, I before the Forte's, I used a pair of Polk RTi A7's, using an old 70 watt per channel Harmon Kardon amp. which was also plenty of power for the Polk speakers. Since the sensitivity for the RTI A7's is 89 and for the Forte's almost 100 which means that you need about 10x less power for the Forte's, I would think that you could even go with a quality amp and have enough power for a room my size or smaller. Also remember if you have a 7 channel amp or greater you can always get more power from the amp if it can handle bi-amping with a 5 channel set up. Again the one variable is room size. Hope this helps. Robert

By "these" assume you mean these Forte III (not the KEFs). The Klipsch are very efficient - you get a lot of output with not much power. If you're looking to get a new amp for them, focus on high-quality, low-noise & low distortion; don't worry about power. But whatever you're driving the KEFs with would surely be a start - hook 'em up and listen, see if you like it or not and go from there. Hope this helps!

When i first purchased the Klipschs I had an old Kenwood amp I had bought new in 1978.. They sounded wonderful with the Kenwood amp but I was at that point where I wanted to update my whole system. I bought a MAC7200 from Crutchfield. I am hearing music at a different level now. And by the way the service from Crutchfield when I bought the speakers and the receiver was top notch. The whole experience including the delivery was awesome.

Hi, I can only make reference to my setup as forte iii, incredible speakers for both vinyl as well as movies, so I use a Marantz NR1510, only pushes 50watts per Chanel but sounds great.

I don't know because the receiver I use with the Forte III speakers is a new one purchased a couple of years ago.

I can't see why it would. I am running a Peachtree Nova with 300 watts per channel without problems.

If your receiver didn't "harm" your current speakers, it probably won't harm the Forte. However, the Forte is a very capable and high end speaker that can only be apprecia

I'm driving these speakers with 2 monoblock power amps rated at 200 watts per channel each. Overkill, yes (I didn't buy the amps for these speakers but had them already, like you), and no way will I turn them all the way up, but there's been no damage. Love them, love the sound, the power and loudness. I would buy them again.
