The backup bundle

Boyo knows that not everyone can fit a video receiver in their dash, so they've bundled a high-quality dash monitor with their VTL17 HD backup camera for a convenient parking solution.

Easily mount this cam

Boyo has affixed their VTL17 camera onto a sturdy strap that attaches behind just about any license plate. This compact camera delivers a picture that's great for low-light scenarios, while selectable parking lines and reverse imaging make it a versatile, little addition. The camera includes a video cable that connects to the monitor.

5" monitor

Once wired for power and video with the included wiring harness, Boyo's 5" monitor attaches conveniently to your windshield with its included suction mount for a crisp view that will be a big help when you're in reverse. An included reverse trigger wire ensures you'll only have to see a backup view when your vehicle is in reverse, and two video inputs allow you to add a front-view camera if you need to be mindful of crunching your low-slung bumper.

Installing this camera yourself? Here's what you should know.

What does it do? Unless otherwise noted, a backup camera is only intended for use backing up your vehicle. (If you require a front-view or constant rear-view camera, check for that capability.)

What tools and supplies will I need? A panel tool, a wire cutter/stripper, a soldering iron, and a rosin-core solder with heat shrink tubing are recommended, along with whatever tools are needed to remove the radio from the dash.

How much wiring is required? Wiring instructions vary from camera to camera. Some cameras have power wiring that can only be connected near the radio. Others let you power the camera at compatible reverse lights. In all cases, the camera must be wired for power and ground, the camera's video output must be connected to the radio/monitor, and the radio/monitor must be connected to a reverse trigger in your vehicle. Some radio replacement interfaces supply a reverse trigger wire for the radio -- using that wire to power your camera will damage the interface.

Will the included video cable be long enough? You'll need to route the camera's video cable from its mounting location outside your vehicle into your vehicle's cabin and all the way to the screen in the dash. This often requires drilling a small hole in your vehicle or filing some metal and or plastic. You'll also need to estimate the length of cable needed to run from the camera to the dash, which will not be a straight shot. Each camera's cable length is listed.

Features

5" LCD Monitor: The Boyo VTC175M includes a 5" LCD monitor with a resolution of 840 x 480 (384,000) and a contrast ratio of 350:1. The LCD monitor can be used as a front view or backup camera monitor, based on how you configure the included camera. The monitor can be mounted to your dash using the included self-adhesive mounting bracket or to your windshield using the included suction-cup mounting bracket. Both brackets allow you to adjust the LCD monitor for the best viewing angle. The monitor also comes with a sunshade to help block sunlight and reduce glare.

  • Camera Input w/ Auto Switching: The LCD monitor features a composite video jack for its camera input to connect the included camera. Thanks to Auto Switching, when you place your vehicle in reverse gear (requires connection to your vehicle's reverse lamp), the LCD monitor will automatically switch over to the backup camera's video signal so you can see what's behind you immediately.
  • Video Input: In addition to the composite video camera input, the LCD monitor features a second composite video input for connecting a front dash camera (sold separately) or other external video source (sold separately).

Camera with License Plate Bracket: The included camera is equipped with a highly sensitive 1/4" color CMOS image sensor. The camera features a waterproof (IP68) housing and a integrated mounting bracket that is designed to mount behind your vehicle's existing license plate. Once the camera and bracket are mounted, you can position the camera forward or angle it down. The mounting hole spacing of the license plate bracket is roughly 6.75" to 7" apart.

  • Rear or Front View: The camera can be used as a backup or front view camera. By default, the camera will display a mirror image for backup use. If you want to use it as a front camera, cut the white wire loop labeled "mirror control" to get normal (non-mirror) image.
  • Parking Guidelines: The camera provides parking assist lines on the screen of the included monitor. These parking lines are there to assist you when backing up into a parking space. There are two vertical lines which help you judge the left and right edges of the parking space and your vehicle. There are also three color-coded (green/yellow/red) horizontal lines that are used to distinguish how close you are getting to the end of the parking spot. If you do not need and want to remove the parking guidelines, then simply cut the blue wire loop labeled "Parking Line Control".
Note: The Boyo VTC175M is meant as a back-up aid only; never solely rely on the rear view camera system when backing-up. In addition to using the rear view camera system, always look behind you to make sure everything is clear when backing up your vehicle.

Q
How long is the included video cable? I need to install this on a 2007 Isuzu NPR-HD truck, which has a 16ft long bed behind the cab. I probably need 25 to 30 feet of cable.

This fantastic Boyo VTC175M Camera bundle comes with 19.5' of Composite video cable length. I would suggest using the T-Spec V10 20-foot video cable extension in the first link with the barrel connectors in the second link. This would give you plenty of length! https://www.crutchfield.com/p_120V10R20V/T-Spec-v10-Series-Video-Cable-20-foot.html https://www.crutchfield.com/p_120RCABFN/T-Spec-RCA-Barrel-Connectors.html

Q
Does monitor have to be turned on manually? Or does it turn on with the ignition switch?
lazaru5  Dec 27, 2021

A
As long as you either 1) connect the reverse wire (which can be difficult to find depending on your vehicle) or 2) connect the power wire at the camera to your reverse lights (what I did), the monitor will turn on automatically when you shift into reverse. If you attach the power wire to your vehicle's accessory wire, the monitor will turn on with the ignition switch.
jeffrey  Dec 27, 2021
A
When wired correctly to the reverse lights, the monitor will turn itself on when the car is placed in reverse.

How long are the wires? I would like to install this unit on a GMC long bed extra cab truck.

Not sure. I had my mechanic install the device. Since the camera is in the rear and the mirror on the dashboard, the wires must be at least the length of the car. I might add it took some time.

Tom, I had the same problem with mine. I ordered pin remover tool and spliced in the wires and use the good pins and replaced the bad one. Then I used dielectric grease to keep moisture out of the coupling when I replaced it. Hope this helps and have a great Fourth of July. Keith

Can the monitor be mounted to the underside of the dash and the screen image flipped so the image is right side up? Looking at a mounting location for a 3rd gen Camaro.

I had one for my father in law that was mounted for the top of the monitor. I used a spot of silicone to hold the screen. I am not sure if you can change the orientation of the screen. I never tried.

Does the screen get power from the same cable (which can be connected to backup light) or does it need additional power source?

I bought a cigarette lighter adapter and hooked up the power to that.
isidoro  Mar 31, 2021

It needs additional power. Use a wire that's has power only when the ignition is on, otherwise the display, even though it's not on, will drain your battery.

It is pretty wide. I'm guessing about 135 degrees. I hacked it up and mounted it dead center on a Jeep wrangler and I like it a lot.

It's pretty wide and you can adjust it. I don't think it's 180 degrees but still pretty good.

Hey I am new to this, I just want to make sure before I make a purchase that I can connect the camera the back license plate and have the monitor in the front(right by the driver) and it should work correct? Also, how close does the camera need to be to the monitor for the connections to work?

Mine wasn't wireless but the cam bolts on to the license plate hardware. Just pull power for the cam off the back up light (i wanted mine on while I was driving too, so pulled from running light). I installed mine in a Nissan NV200 and there was plenty of adequate gauged wire included so install was pretty straight forward.
john  Aug 02, 2017

I just installed this camera on my 2007 Ford Ranger Extended Cab pick-up truck. The supplied cabling was JUST long enough to go from the rear license plate to the dashboard on the driver's. The monitor has to sit very close to the left of the dashboard (close to the side of the truck). I put the connections where the camera cable attaches to the long cable behind my left rear tail light. This used up some cable but it's a convenient location if I need to access the connections.
chet  Aug 02, 2017

You can mount camera to license bracket and put monitor on the dash. The video cable that comes with it should get you all the way. With a wired system you should be able to go as far as you need. You can buy an extension for the cable if needed. The wiring diagram that comes with the unit leaves a lot to be desired. If you have a problem with it,ask an electrician to help you out. There are several ways you could wire it. On some vehicles you cannot connect extra load to some circuits. I connected mine to the backup light circuit at my trailer hitch receptacle. The camera works when truck is in reverse. You may want yours to work all the time. Something to think about. If you don,t have trailer hitch wiring you may want to ask your dealer where it is best to connect to. Lots of luck and have fum.

You can mount camera to license plate bracket and put monitor on the dash. The video cable that comes with the camera should reach all the way in most cars. On a wired system any reasonable length should be okay. Could get extension cable if needed from Radio Shack or the like. The wiring diagrams that come with the unit leave a lot to be desired. You may need to ask an electrician to explain if you have a problem. In many new cars you should not add an extra load to some lighting circuits. Better check with your dealer about where you get power. I connected to the backup lights at my trailer receptacle which should be okay on any car if you have trailer wiring. Mine works only when my Tahoe is in reverse. You might want yours on all the time. Some thing to think about. There are several ways you could wire it. Have fun.

My nephew just installed this in my Honda Accord and the monitor is on my window (low on the left side as I am left handed), and the camera is attached at the top of the license plate. Works great

I put this Boyo Camera on a Honda Oddysey. Camera on License Plate and Mounted the Monitor on the Dash.I did have to get a Yellow RCA Camera cable and coupler to extend the Camera cable about three feet. Van is pretty long. I suggest you only use one power source. The 12V that goes active when you go into reverse worked good for me. In the Honda the 12V reverse signal was behind the Drivers side Kick Panel. Their Support team was very good with answering my questions. NCC
nick  Jul 31, 2017

It should work fine. The camera is hard wired with an rca cable so the distance between the camera and monitor can be as far as the cables length.
