CD receiver with built-in SIRIUS tuner and MP3 / WMA playback (New Stock)
Our take on the Kenwood EZ-700SR by Crutchfield's Matt Freeman
The Kenwood EZ-700SR CD receiver looks sharp, sounds great, and makes your life easy, thanks to its built-in SIRIUS Satellite Radio tuner and included antenna. Now you don't have to shop for extra gear to enjoy the music, sports, news, and entertainment SIRIUS has to offer ($12.95-per-month subscription also required).
True to its EZ philosophy, Kenwood made this receiver extremely easy to use. The fold-down, detachable face offers simple, intuitive controls, a roomy button layout, and two large rotary knobs for making system adjustments, plus a white LED display that's easy to read and easy on the eyes. For the right stylistic accent of your vehicle's interior, you can select red or green button illumination.
Kenwood made sure to pile on the extras, too. In addition to your standard CDs, you can enjoy the MP3 and WMA files you've burned onto CD-R or CD-RW. System Q with its 3-band equalizer and six preset tone curves lets you dial in the sound just the way you like it, while System E's high- and low-pass filters tailor the EZ-700SR's output to your speakers so you get the most out of your system.
Three sets of preamp outputs let you add additional power in the form of external amplifiers and you can even turn off the internal amp for the cleanest possible signal. The EZ-700SR's auxiliary input will accommodate another sound source, like the audio from your iPod®, so you won't want for entertainment options. A wireless remote is also included.
Important note: The CD player and AM/FM tuner on the EZ-700SR will not operate until you activate your SIRIUS subscription. If you discontinue your SIRIUS subscription, the EZ-700SR will operate normally.

Sirius Satellite Radio: The Kenwood Ez700SR has a built-in Sirius Satellite Radio tuner and comes with a Sirius antenna. You can store up to 24 stations in 4 Sirius preset bands. When Sirius is selected as a source, Channel Scan will allow you to listen to every receivable channel for 10 seconds. In addition, you can switch between channel seek and preset seek tuning. You can choose to skip or lock out particular channels if desired. You can search for stations by category, channel, or by direct access tuning.
Note: The Sirius subscription must first be activated before any of the receiver's functions are available.
MP3/WMA Playback: The receiver can play MP3 and WMA files recorded on CD-ROM, CD-R, and CD-RW discs in ISO9660 Level 1/Level 2, Joliet, and Romeo formats. Each disc should have a maximum of 8 directory levels, 100 folders, and 255 files per folder. During MP3/WMA playback, the unit displays any recorded ID3 Tag information.
System Q Sound Control: Six EQ curves are preset into memory, allowing you to recall the best preset EQ curve for different types of music. Each preset has its own level settings for bass, midrange, and treble. Each level can also be set to your personal taste between -8 and +8 and stored in the "User" memory. Furthermore, when activated, you can also adjust the center frequencies of the bass (60/70/80/100/150 Hz), middle (0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0kHz), or treble (10, 12.5, 15, 17.5kHz), the bass and middle Q Factor, and Bass Extend. The 6 preset curves with their respective bass, mid, and treble levels are as follows:
- Rock: Bass +6, Mid +1, Treble +2
- Pops: Bass +3, Mid +2, Treble +6
- Easy: Bass +6, Mid 0, Treble -2
- Top 40: Bass +3, Mid +1, Treble +8
- Jazz: Bass +5, Mid +2, Treble +2
- Flat: Bass 0, Mid 0, Treble 0
Speaker Settings: The Speaker Setting function tailors the System Q Sound Control settings according to the type of speakers in your vehicle. You may select a Speaker Setting of "SP Off" (flat), "SP OEM." (for OEM factory speaker systems), "SP 6x9/6" (for systems with 6" and 6"x9" speakers), or "SP 5/4" (for systems with 4" and 5" speakers).
System E's: In addition to System Q Sound Control, the Ez700SR features the System E's crossover system for the speaker and preamp outputs. You can make the following adjustments:
- Front High Pass Filter: 100Hz, 125Hz, 170Hz, or Thru (no filter)
- Rear High Pass Filter: 200Hz, or Thru (no filter)
- Low Pass Filter: 50Hz, 80Hz, 120Hz or Thru (no filter)
Source Tone Memory: This feature allows you to store System Q bass, middle and treble tone settings for each source (CD, FM, AM, and CD changer).
Volume Offset: The level of each source may be independently adjusted to prevent radical leaps in output volume when switching from one source to another. The available settings range from -8 to 0.
Disc/Station Naming: You can enter and store names of up to 8 characters for CDs and radio stations. Characters can include upper and lower case letters, numbers, symbols, and special accent characters. The memory can store names for up to 48 stations (32 FM/16 AM) and 30 discs in the internal CD player. The number of disc names you can store for an external CD changer depends upon the capability of the changer.
Dual Zone System: The Ez700SR's Dual Zone System allows you to output one source to the front preamp outputs and another source to the rear preamp outputs. The main source can be the internal disc player, tuner, or a source connected via the 13-pin CD changer input. The sub source is a device connected to the rear RCA auxiliary input. You can assign the sub source to either the front or rear channels. When the Dual Zone System is activated, the volume of the front outputs is controlled by the volume knob, while the volume of the rear channels is controlled in the Audio Control menu.
Built-in Amp Switch: If the audio signals are output to external amplifiers, you can turn off the internal amplifier to improve audio quality.
CR-2 Advanced Tuner: This unit uses Kenwood's CR-2 Advanced tuner for clear radio reception. You can choose one of three tuning modes: Auto 1 (seek tuning), Auto 2 (cycles through and tunes the selected band's preset stations only with each button press), or Manual.
HD Radio Ready: With an optional Kenwood HD Radio tuner (item # 113HR100TR), you will be able to receive digital AM/FM broadcasts from local stations where available. This new technology will significantly improve audio quality and reception, as well as include information such as artist name and song titles or traffic news, viewable on the receiver's display.
Clean Reception System Circuit (CRSC): This circuit controls multi-path distortion by reducing stereo separation. As stereo separation is reduced, multi-path has less effect on the radio signal, improving reception in areas with tall buildings and mountains. The CRSC circuit can be turned on or off.
Last Position Memory: If the unit is shut off or switched to the tuner mode while a CD is playing, the next time CD is selected as the source, playback will resume from the point where it left off.
Disabled System Indicator: A red indicator will blink on the unit after the faceplate is removed, warning potential thieves. This feature can be turned On or Off.
Security Code: You can enter a 4-digit security code which must be used when the unit is removed from the vehicle, or the constant power source is disconnected from the unit. When constant power is restored to the unit, the security code must be entered before the unit becomes operational. The security code may be disabled if desired.
Remote Control: The Ez700SR comes with the RC-505 wireless remote control, a 22-button full-function remote with a 10-key number pad. It is powered by 2 "AA" batteries (supplied). The dimensions of the remote are: L=5.488", W=1.75", D=1.115".
Display Illumination/Clock Display: When the unit is in Standby mode, the face/button illumination is "keyed". In addition, while the unit is in Standby mode, you can turn the clock display on or off." When the Clock Display is turned on and the unit is in Standby mode, the Clock Display is also "keyed". Pressing and holding the source button turns the unit off completely.
Display Dimmer: When the dimmer control is set to "on", the display automatically dims when the vehicle lights are turned on. When set to "off", the display doesn't dim. Note: In order for the display dimmer feature to operate, the orange/white wire in the supplied wiring harness must be connected to the vehicle's headlight circuit.
Bass Management System (B.M.S.): The receiver can remotely adjust the bass boost level of a compatible Kenwood external amplifier with Bass Management System. When properly connected (the pink/black wire on the receiver harness needs to be connected to the amplifier), the head unit can set the bass boost to Flat, +6dB, +12dB, and +18dB (when the amp is capable). Also, you can set the bass boost center frequency to Normal (set by the amp), or Low (lowered by 20%).
Auxiliary Input: The Ez700SR is equipped with a built-in auxiliary input. There is a set of stereo RCA jacks on a 12-inch pigtail on the back of the receiver for connecting an external audio source. The Auxiliary input can be activated/deactivated through the menu. When it's activated, you can select one of six names for the source: Aux, TV, Video, Game, Portable or DVD. When deactivated, Auxiliary does not appear as a source. With an optional adapter (item 113CAC1AX or 113KCAS220), you can also turn the unit's CD changer input into a second auxiliary input.
Compatibility: This unit is directly compatible with Kenwood changers manufactured in 1998 or later. If the changer has an O-N switch, the switch will need to be set to the "N" position.
Changer Controls: In addition to basic disc navigation features, this unit has the following changer controls: direct disc access (using the remote), direct track access (using the remote), track intro scan, track repeat, disc repeat, disc random, and all disc random.
