Features

Dynamic Balance Drivers: Dynamic Balance is a proprietary Polk Audio technology using laser imaging to determine what combination of speaker materials create the least amount of resonance. Eliminating resonance in speakers results in a wide, smooth response and low distortion. Using just the right materials enables Polk to eliminate issues that reduce speaker performance and tune out performance-robbing resonances before they occur. Dynamic Balance ensures a rich, clean, full-range sound no matter what you're listening to. The Polk Signature S55 floor-standing loudspeaker incorporates a Dynamic Balance two-way driver array with one 1" tweeter and two 6.5" woofers.

  • Hi-Res 1" Terylene Tweeter: The Signature S55 floor-standing loudspeaker utilizes Polk's newly designed 1" Terylene tweeter to deliver clear and detailed high-end response for realistic reproduction of vocals and instruments. It will support high frequencies up to 40kHz to perfectly reproduce the latest high-resolution audio files with improved audio extension, earning Hi-Res Audio Certification.
  • Dual 6.5" Mica-Reinforced Polypropylene Woofers: The Signature S55 floor-standing speaker employs two 6.5" Dynamic Balance low distortion mica-reinforced polypropylene cone woofers for clean, clear bass, better linearity, and increased dynamic midrange and midbass. This mica-reinforced polypropylene woofers feature butyl rubber surrounds, massive ceramic motor structures, and high-temperature Conex fiber spiders that combine to create drivers of exceptionally high efficiency, for clean, clear bass, better linearity, lower distortion, and greater durability.

Power Port Technology: The Signature S55 floor-standing incorporates Polk's Power Port technology with a specially designed down-firing port. Power Port technology smoothly transition air flow from inside the speaker into your listening area for deep, extended bass impact while minimizing turbulence and distortion. Polk's patented Power Port technology delivers 3dB more bass response than a traditional ported speaker. Because the port is located on the bottom of the floor-standing speaker, its not necessary to position to the loudspeaker a certain amount of feet from wall - giving you greater placement flexibility.

Non-Resonant Enclosure: The floor-standing speaker's strong, rigid and acoustically inert enclosure reduces unwanted internal standing waves for less audible coloration. And non-resonant Meddite MDF construction, extra bracing, and a thick front baffle ensure a more lifelike sound. The enclosure's curved edges not only look cool, they reduce standing waves inside the cabinet for less audible coloration. The enclosure features a beautiful black washed walnut finish.

Anti-Diffraction Magnetic Grille: The Signature S55 includes an anti-diffraction magnetic grille for unaltered sound. The integrated magnets make it easy to attach and remove the grille from the floor-standing speaker.

Two-Way Crossover: The floor-standing speaker employs a high-performance two-way crossover array (2.5kHz) for seamless blending and optimum time alignment of the tweeter & woofers, creating a lifelike soundstage.

Dual 5-Way Binding Posts: The floor-standing loudspeaker has two sets of 5-way binding posts connected by jumpers. Using the dual 5-way binding posts, you can bi-amp or bi-wire the speakers. The 5-way binding posts will accept bare wire (up to 10AWG), pin-connectors, spade-connectors, and banana plugs (single or dual). The speaker terminals are color coded for easy identification between positive (red) and negative (black).

Dual-Floor Compatible Feet: Customized for improved stability and bass coupling to the floor, the floor-standing loudspeaker's feet are designed for both carpet and hard floors. The feet come pre-installed and should not be removed.

Applications & Placement: The Signature S55 floor-standing speakers can be used as front and/or surround speakers in a home theater setup. They can also be used in a simple stereo application. If your AV receiver offers built-in bass management, the S55 should be set to "Large" for an unfiltered, full-range audio signal.

  • Placement for Front Speakers: As a pair of front speakers in a home theater or stereo setup, create an equilateral triangle between the speakers and the listening position - with the speakers placed as far apart from one another as the listeners are sitting from them.
  • Placement for Surround Speakers: As surround speakers, the S55 should be placed on a side wall slightly behind the listening position. If you cannot place the speakers on the side walls, position them on the rear wall just behind the listening area.

Signature Series: Polk designed its Signature Series of loudspeakers to bring a big surround sound and a live music experience into the comfort of your living room at an affordable price. Featuring Hi-Res certification with a new high-resolution Terylene tweeter, redesigned Dynamic Balance drivers, precision crossovers, an anti-diffraction magnetic grille, modern cabinet styling and exclusive Power Port bass enhancing technology, Polk's Signature series loudspeakers deliver crystal clear highs, detailed midrange, and deep bass; plus they look great in almost any decor. The Signature Series by Polk consists of two center-channel speakers, three bookshelf loudspeakers, and three tower speakers.

Note: You may also want to add one of Polk Audio's powered subwoofers (sold separately) for even more bass response.

Q
I don't understand the biwiring or biamp option on the Polk speakers... what does it mean?

A
There are two sets of binding posts. One pair is for the upper frequency range, one for the lower frequency range. There is a metal strip that onnects the two (upper and lower) binding posts. When not bi-amping, then just connect your speaker wire to either the upper or lower posts. When bi-amping, then you use an electronic crossover to separate the higher and lower frequencies. In this case, the crossover outputs have two sets of speaker wire outputs, one set for high frequencies one for low. If bi-amping, then you remove the metal strip connecting the two posts, and connect the high freq. speaker wire from the crossover to the upper post and the low freq. wire from the crossover to the lower post.

I was curious about that as well. A Crutchfield advisor helped me with it. Basically, bi-amping allows the speakers to receive 2 channels from your receiver rather than 1. In other words, there are two sets of pos/neg posts on the back of these speakers. So, if your amplifier puts out 100w per channel, like mine does, I can now provide these speakers with 200w. You'll have to check your receiver to see if it has bi-amount outputs. My 2010 Onkyo receiver was set up with bi-amping and was labeled as such on the back, and for me I had the choice for either using the channel for high front or bi-amped speakers. The bi-amped output goes to the lower connections. The regular front output goes to the upper connections on the speakers. After setting it up, I also had to go through the setup menu for my receiver to tell it I was now using bi-amped speakers. You may also want to redo you equalization setup (using a setup mic) if your receiver has that feature to ensure to maintain balance for your surround sound. I'm being wordy in the explanation, but it was pretty simple to do, and you can send twice the power to the speakers - I get a noticeable difference! One last thought is to check the output of your receiver to ensure the speakers can handle the extra power. Hope this was of help.

With a Denon AVR-640H 5.1 receiver would this speakers sound good? And does this speackers have some good bass incorporated? Thanks.

I cannot speak on the receiver, but the speakers do sound great. They are crisp on the high end and drop low to 32 hz which is pretty good for tower speakers. The other night I had my sub turned off and didn't notice until I tried to turn it up, so they definitely have some bass, but I recently went with a klipsche ref-12 to make up the much lower notes the towers cannot reach.
caden  Apr 12, 2020

They have nice bass response. I probably don't really need the sub. However I am bi-amping with 110 watts per channel.

I found these speakers had a great clean sound but i ended up with the S60s for the extra driver. Bass was ok but the s60s were a big improvement for me.

Q
I have a Yamaha v581 receiver would it be able to power these speakers?
mikey  Jan 31, 2020

A
The receiver I am using with the S55 speakers is a vintage Marantz stereo receiver that is conservatively rated at 125 watts per channel, and I believe the Yamaha is a 7.1 surround receiver rated at 80 watts into two channels. The unit I am using is overkill for these speakers as they are very efficient, so unless the amplifiers in the v581 are over taxed by trying to split the power between the other four channels as well it should be adequate. I can say that the highest I've driven these speakers is 1/3 volume level and turned it down promptly to keep peace with the neighbors !
david  Feb 01, 2020

I believe your v581 is 80w per channel. Yes it should drive them just fine. I have used both an 80w receiver and a 50w amp with these speakers and they sound great with either of them.

Q
For the owners of the S55 who may ALSO use them as " 2 channel stereo " listening.....Is the BASS good enough and deep enough to use them without a SUB WOOFER ? Do they really get down to 32 Hz (perhaps with some -dB)? THANK YOU IN ADVANCE FOR YOUR HELP AND REPLIES. JOHN C.

Hi John Yes the S55 has great bass, haven't really turned off my sub woofer but I think it would do great. Hope the information I gave you will help. Terry

I would say...no, it's not enough to operate without a sub if your expecting to get solid bass. I guess they do technically hit the low notes, and it provides good depth to the bass for surround sound, but it's just not going to provide anywhere close to the volume you're going to get out of a descent 12" sub.
