Our take on the ClearView Panther Tribrid DVR by Crutchfield's Eric Angevine
A DVR with multi-camera compatibility
Many DVR units are compatible with only specific types of cameras. The ClearView Panther is known as a Tribrid DVR because it works with the three most common types of surveillance camera on the market — HD-AVS, Analog, and IP. That means you can use it with your older cameras, newer cameras, or a combination of both. And the functionality doesn't stop there. The unit includes multiple inputs and outputs that allow you to connect network devices, additional memory, remote controls and more.
No matter which cameras and devices you choose to connect, you'll get high-quality video surveillance from the DVR. The Panther supports full HD (1920 x 1080 pixels) recording at 15 frames per second, and records to an internal 1TB (terabyte) hard drive. If you need more space, dual SATA slots support up to 8TB of additional storage. You can set the machine to record continuously, respond to triggers, or schedule specific times of day. Use networking functions to send alerts to your mobile device, so you always know what's happening.

Overview: The ClearView Panther-08HP DVR is an 8-channel DVR (digital video recorder) with a built-in 1 TB HDD (hard disk drive). The DVR lets you simultaneously record video from up to 8 connected cameras. This DVR features "Tribrid" technology, which lets you connect three different types of cameras: HD-AVS, IP, and Analog. Even if your existing system has older analog cameras, you can upgrade your existing system while adding high-resolution HD recording capability.
Note: The Panther-08HP-Tribrid does not include any cameras in the box.
1 TB Capacity: The Panther-08HP DVR includes a built-in 1 TB HDD (hard disk drive) that gives you thousands of hours of storage. You can expand the capacity of the DVR by adding a second SATA HDD, if desired. The DVR can accept up to 8 TB of total storage.
Operating System: The Panther-08HP has an embedded LINUX operating system to maintain stable operation.
DVR: The component-style DVR lets you monitor and record video (at up to 30 fps) up to eight channels of video from the remotely-mounted cameras. The unit also has four audio inputs for use with optional microphones. The system uses H.264 video compression and G.711 audio compression. You can set up the DVR to perform motion detection recording, scheduled recording, alarm recording, and manual recording. Each recording can be up to 120 minutes in length, with the default set to 60 minutes.
Monitoring: You can monitor all eight cameras at the same time, or any of the cameras individually. The DVR has an HDMI port for outputting HD video to a TV, and a VGA output for sending a composite signal to a PC or monitor.
Privacy Masking: If there are areas in the camera's view that you do not wish to show, you can use privacy masking to obscure those areas. Up to 4 zones per camera can be selected for privacy masking.
Pan Tilt Zoom: When PTZ-capable cameras are connected, you can set up each camera to pan and tilt up/down/left/right in a constant pattern, or when an alarm is triggered. You can also control the panning speed, zoom, focus, and iris.
Network Operation: The Panther-08HP supports real-time monitoring via a network connection. You will be able to monitor on a PC as a web viewer, as part of a CMS (central management system), or on a smartphone app (iPhone, iPad, Android, or Windows Phone). In addition, you can perform video recording searches remotely, and control the pan, tilt, and zoom (PTZ) action on compatible cameras.
Video Playback: When you are ready to play back recordings, you can search by time, type, or channel. Videos can be played back at normal speed, fast play, slow play, manual frame-by-frame playback, and reverse play. You can switch to the previous or next file, or any file in the current play list. If there are files from another channel recorded at the same time, you can immediately switch to that file. All channel synchronous real time playback is also available. In continuous play mode, the next file automatically plays when the current file ends.
Backup: The Panther-08HP allows you to backup your HDD via the provided USB ports. You can use a flash drive, portable HDD, or a disk burner. You can also perform backup to the cloud via network download for off-site storage.
