To the untrained ear, all bass might sound the same, but you know better. If you're chasing that frequency that makes people hit the dance floor en masse, you'll want Yamaha's HS8S subwoofer in your studio arsenal. You may want the track to boom like surf pounding the shore by the time it hits the club, but when you're in the mixing chair, you want to hear the original notes, including the lower frequencies, faithfully recreated. The architecture of accurate sound

Yamaha's engineers used in-depth airflow analysis to arrive at what they believe is the ideal port design, resulting in a reduction of audible noise up to 6dB. State-of-the-art technology allows the HS8S to meet the strict demands of professional production.
Yamaha draws on decades of firsthand musical knowledge to ensure that no unwanted noise creeps into your pristine studio sound. They borrowed a three-way mitred joint technique from their piano design to enhance durability and eliminate unwanted resonance in the rock-solid HS8S cabinet. Connection and control
The HS8S offers precise output control via an 80-120 Hz low cut filter that can be turned off and on with the flick of a switch, sending send sound right back out to your studio monitors via a separate set of XLR outputs. There's also a simple normal/reverse phase switch and level control knob. Signal comes in clean via paired right and left XLR or 1/4" inputs (cannot be used simultaneously). Connect to a pair of Yamaha's HS5 or HS7 studio monitors and hear the depth you've been missing.

8" Woofer: With a newly designed, ultra-responsive 8"woofer that utilizes large, carefully selected magnets, the HS8S studio monitor powered sub produces low distortion sound with a well-defined bottom end at any output level. All of the components in this high-power woofer, including the woofer ring and the basket further contribute to the HS8S stunning bass.
150-Watt Amplifier: The HS8S studio monitor powered sub employs a 150-watt amplifier unit perfectly matched to the 8" woofer. This amplifier unit ensures that the HS8S consistently delivers dynamic bass.
Low Resonance Enclosure Design: The HS8S cabinet is designed to eliminate unwanted resonance and increase the accuracy of sound reproduction to their extreme limit. The enclosure is constructed from a very dense and resilient MDF with a damped acoustic response that is perfectly suited for reference monitors. Drawing from Yamaha's over 100 years of piano design experience, HS Series engineers also employed a traditional three-way mitered-joint technique. Common to architectural design this construction firmly anchors the corners of the enclosure to dramatically improve durability and eliminate unwanted resonance that can influence overall sound.
Noise Reduction Port Technology: Speaker port design can greatly influence the clarity of overall sound. Often a vortex at the either end of the port can generate air vibrations inside of the port, causing unwanted noise. By adopting an advanced noise reduction technology that incorporates a thorough analysis of a visual representation of the sound, Yamaha's engineers are able to control and reduce the vortex. Through this in-depth analysis Yamaha arrived at the ideal rear-firing port design, resulting in a reduction of audible noise up to 6dB. The utilization of this state-of-the-art technology allows the HS8S to meet the demands of more strict professional production environments.
Subwoofer Response Controls: The HS8S studio monitor powered subwoofer offers several audio controls to match the sub to your system and application.
- Level: Adjust the subwoofer output level.
- High Cut: Sets the cutoff frequency for subwoofer output high-frequency attenuation from 80Hz to 120Hz.
- Phase: Switches the phase of the subwoofer output. This switch should be set to "Normal" in most situations. But in combination with some speakers and in some speaker layouts, switching to the "Reverse" setting may improve low-frequency response. Choose the setting that provides the best bass response in your system.
- Low Cut: When this setting is "On", the low frequencies are attenuated prior to output to your studio monitor speakers (sold separately) via the sub's L/R connectors at the frequency of 80Hz to 120Hz.
Inputs/Outputs: The HS8S studio monitor powered subwoofer
- Input L/R Connectors: These connectors receive the input signal to the subwoofer. Balanced XLR and balanced phone jack connectors are provided for both the L and R inputs. The L and R inputs can be used simultaneously. Signals supplied to both the L and R inputs are mixed internally. The XLR and phone jack input connectors can not be used simultaneously; use only one input connector at a time.
- Output L/R Connectors: The subwoofer features balanced stereo XLR output connectors. The input signals received at the sub's Input L/R connectors are output via the subwoofer's L/R output connectors, respectively to your studio monitor speakers (sold separately). Low frequency reproduction characteristics can be adjusted via the "Low Cut" switch and "Low Cut" control.
Placement: The studio monitor powered subwoofer is normally placed on
the floor between the left and right full-range speakers. But since the
subwoofer reproduces low frequencies below 200 Hz that are relatively non-directional, subwoofer positioning is not critical.
