Overview: The Sennheiser EW122 G3 is a wireless microphone system designed for presentations, lectures, and sermons where a discreet, high-quality wireless microphone is desirable. It features an ME4 clip-on microphone, an SK 100 G3 bodypack transmitter, and an EM 100 G3 rack-mountable receiver that have access to 1,680 different frequencies with 42 MHz of operating bandwidth. The microphone's cardioid pattern provides clear, full pick-up while the receiver's true diversity antenna system provides for a reliable signal transmission, even in large rooms, by letting one antenna pick up the signal if the other one starts to fade out.

Microphone: The included ME4 microphone is a small, spherical, condenser mic designed to clip onto the speaker's shirt or blouse and plug into the bodypack transmitter. The mic cord is terminated with a 3.5 mm connector that includes a knurled locking collar for attachment to the transmitter. A cardioid polar pattern means the mic can pick up the speaker, even when speaking softly, while rejecting off-axis sounds greatly reducing feedback.

Transmitter: The SK 100 G3 bodypack Transmitter is the device that sends the microphone signal wirelessly to the Receiver unit and is designed to be attached to the speaker's belt, pants, or skirt with the attached belt-clip. The bodypack runs on 2 AA batteries (included) which also powers the condenser mic, and with 30 mW of output power can have a clear reception range of up to 300 feet. Sennheiser employs a proprietary noise-reduction system called HDX. The HDX compander (compression/expander) circuitry allows the transmitter to produce an RF signal that maximizes the microphone's signal-to noise ratio while avoiding the RF noise inherent in most systems. Once the transmitted RF signal reaches the receiver, it is re-converted into analog audio (using reciprocal receiver-side HDX technology) with accuracy and clarity. This results in audio that sounds as good as that of a wired microphone. The ME4 Transmitter functions are as follows:

• Top:
  • 3.5mm Jack: Can accept either Mic or Line level signals.
  • Mute Switch: The Mute switch can be programmed to mute the audio signal, activate/deactivate the RF signal, or do nothing.
  • 5" Antenna: Transmits signal to Receiver up to 300 feet.
• Front:
  • LCD: The orange backlit LCD will display the Audio Level, Frequency, Name (default is model#), signal Transmission icon, Mute, Battery level, Lock on/off, and whether the Pilot tone is activated. The Pilot tone works in conjunction with the Squelch control. If the Pilot tone is on but isn't present, then the Squelch feature knows to mute any unwanted signals that might get picked up by the system.
  • LED indicators: The front panel has an On/Low Batt LED indicator, that lights red when the Transmitter is on and flashes red when the batteries are getting low, along with an AF Peak LED that lights yellow if the audio level from the mic is too high.
  • Up/Down Buttons: This rocker button is used to navigate through options on the LCD display.
• Battery Compartment: Behind the fold-down access panel is the battery compartment for 2 AA batteries. Along with the batteries are the On/Off button for powering the Transmitter, as well as the Set button. This acts like an "enter" button to make selections in the menu settings. There's also an IR emitter beside the On/Off button that's used during the Auto Tuning process.

Receiver: The brain of the EW122 G3 wireless system is the receiver. It's designed to receive the RF signal from the transmitter, convert it back into an audio signal, and output it to a PA system or audio device for amplification, mixing, or recording. The Sennheiser Receiver uses True Diversity technology to ensure stable, uninterrupted wireless reception. The Receiver basically has two independent receiver sections, each with its own antenna, and by means of a comparison circuit, can analyze which one is pulling in a stronger signal and switch to that one. This helps maintain a stable, high-quality signal reducing the possibility of dropouts. Like the Transmitter, the Receiver also uses Sennheiser's sophisticated HDX noise reduction circuitry that maximizes the microphone's dynamic range while minimizing undesirable sound artifacts and transmission noise. This results in a clear, full sound with a CD-quality signal-to-noise ratio. The EM 100 G3 has 21 Banks of operating Channels (Frequencies) each Bank having 12 available Channels for a total of 1,680 Transmission/Receiving frequencies with 42 MHz bandwidth. Banks 1 - 20 are factory Preset and cannot be edited, but Bank 21 allows the user to store their own Channels. Channel frequencies are freely selectable in 25 kHz steps.

• Receiver Front Panel:
  • Sync: This button is used to sync the Receiver and Transmitter in the initial setup procedure. After a Bank and Channel have been set on the Receiver, the Transmitter can be held in front of the Receiver, IR window of the Receiver facing the IR window on the Transmitter, and all the parameters will get transferred to the Transmitter making for a faster setup.
  • Up/Down: These two buttons cycle the cursor up and down through the menu options on the LCD display.
  • Set: Similar This will select whichever option is highlighted in the display.
  • Power/Esc: Used to power the Receiver on and off, it also acts as an Escape button while in the settings menu.
  • LCD Display: During normal operation, the front panel Display will show the following information:
    • Diversity Antenna: Icons of Roman numerals I and II indicate which diversity antenna is currently picking up the signal.
    • RF Level: This 4-segment meter displays the Radio Frequency or "connection" level between the Transmitter and the Receiver.
    • Audio Level: This is also a 4-segment meter, with Peak indicator, to display the audio level from the microphone.
    • Bank and Channel Numbers
    • Frequency: Displays the Frequency associated with the current Channel.
    • Name: Allows you to enter a name for the Receiver. Default is the unit's model number.
    • P (Pilot tone): Indicates whether the Squelch control's Pilot Tone is activated or not.
    • Mute: Displays if the Muting function is on.
    • Battery Status: A 3-segment meter shows the charge status of the batteries.
    • Lock icon: Shows if Lock mode is activated or not.
• Rear Panel:
  • DC Power: 12V/300mA power input with strain-relief cord holder.
  • Outputs: One balanced, male, 3-pin XLR jack and one 1/4" unbalanced jack.
  • Data: Two RJ11 Data jacks are provided for factory use.
  • ANT I/II: These are 2 locking BNC connectors for the diversity antennas to plug into.

Easy Setup: Sennheiser has simplified the setup process with their Easy Setup option in the Receiver's menu. When this is selected, the unit will scan all available Channels and will suggest a Bank with the most free Channels. After selecting a Bank/Channel for the Receiver, the Sync option allows the Transmitter to be placed in front of the Receiver, IR display to IR display, and the Bank/Channel selection will be set automatically on the Transmitter, matching the Receiver. Bank and Channel selections can be made manually as well.

Squelch: Squelch is the ability of a transmitter/receiver to suppress or mute the channel if the signal level weakens enough. This helps keep out unwanted channel noise and stray signals from other wireless devices, especially when there's no signal being sent from the Transmitter. The EW122 G3 system includes built-in Squelch control along with a Pilot Tone. The Pilot Tone is a continuous signal sent by the Receiver that the Transmitter looks for, and if gets weak enough or disappears completely, the Receiver will stop receiving completely. The Pilot Tone can be turned off if needed, such as when more than one microphone are using the same channel. An RF level meter on both the Transmitter and the Receiver display the signal level along with a "P" icon that displays if the Pilot Tone is activated.

Lock Mode: The EW122 G3 includes an Auto Lock feature that, when activated, keeps the controls from working unless temporarily deactivated. Once deactivated, the Lock Mode is automatically activated after 10 seconds while the standard display is shown. If the menu is displayed, it will stay deactivated as long as long as you're in that menu. A Lock icon on the Receiver and Transmitter will display the Lock status.
