Our take on the iDatalink Maestro ADS-MRR Interface Module

iDatalink's Maestro ADS-MRR module, along with the correct interface harness for your vehicle, allows you to install a new car stereo in select late-model Fiat, Ford, GM, Chrysler, Toyota/Scion, Honda, Fiat, Subaru, or Volkswagen vehicles while retaining your factory steering wheel audio controls and the use of your factory amplifier, if present.

iDatalink's Maestro RR module

iDatalink's Maestro RR module

iDatalink's Maestro ADS-MRR module, along with the correct interface harness for your vehicle, allows you to install a new car stereo in select late-model Fiat, Ford, GM, Chrysler, Toyota/Scion, Honda, Fiat, Subaru, or Volkswagen vehicles while retaining your factory steering wheel audio controls and the use of your factory amplifier, if present.

Here's how it works

First, you connect the Maestro to your Windows-based computer (not compatible with Macs) using the included USB cable, visit www.idatalink.com/maestro, and follow the instructions. Once the unit has been "flashed," it's ready to go. Next, you'll either solder or crimp the vehicle-specific Maestro harness  (sold separately) to your new receiver's wiring, just like you would with any Crutchfield wiring harness or wiring adapter.

Important Note: You will also need an additional Maestro vehicle-specific wiring harness that connects your new receiver to the ADS-MRR module and your vehicle's wiring. We will automatically add this harness to your Cart at a discounted price when you purchase a new car stereo and this ADS-MRR module.

Retain steering wheel audio controls, too

The ADS-MRR module also allows you to use your factory steering wheel audio controls with your new receiver. Using the intuitive web programming interface, each factory button can be assigned a specific radio function. Better yet, you can also assign a secondary "press and hold" radio function to each factory button, effectively doubling what can be controlled.

Keeping your factory features with an iDatalink-ready car stereo

If you're buying a compatible Kenwood, JVC, Pioneer, or Alpine receiver, you'll enjoy the outstanding performance of your receiver, plus seamless touchscreen control over most of the factory features in select vehicles (see Details for specific functions and installation notes).

Chrysler: You'll retain the use of the Uconnect® system (including voice command), along with your steering wheel audio controls and factory amp.

Fiat: You'll retain your vehicle's factory amp, USB port, and backup camera.

Ford: You'll keep your SYNC® system, including the factory Bluetooth, satellite radio (in select vehicles, see Details), steering wheel audio controls, and other great features.

GM: You'll retain the use of OnStar® system, along with your steering wheel audio controls, your factory amp, and safety warning chimes.

Honda: You'll retain your vehicle's steering wheel controls, Bluetooth, aux iInput, and factory amplifier.

Subaru: You'll retain your steering wheel controls, factory amp and sub, and Subaru backup camera.

Toyota: You'll retain your vehicle's A/V input, USB port, and backup camera.

Volkswagen: You'll retain your VW's Bluetooth, the factory digital amplifier and fader, plus VW's media device interface. Select Kenwood receivers allow you to display navigation info on your VW's multi-function screen.

Important Note: iDatalink Maestro RR is not compatible with a Mac.

Note: Most vehicles will require additional installation parts — please identify your vehicle if you haven’t done so. You can also call an Advisor for more information.

General Features

Web-Programmable Radio Replacement Solution: The iDatalink Maestro RR (ADS-MRR) is part of a web-programmable solution that allows you to replace the factory radio in many 2006-up Ford/Lincoln/Mercury, GM, Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep, Toyota/Scion, Honda/Acura, Fiat, Subaru, and Volkswagen vehicles (requires additional vehicle specific harness). Retained features will vary by vehicle and aftermarket head unit.

Note: Click here for the latest compatible vehicles. Please enter your vehicle information to see if your specific vehicle is compatible and what additional accessories will be needed.

Flashing the Module: The iDatalink Maestro RR (ADS-MRR) will need to be loaded with correct firmware before installation. The included USB cable plugs into your PC and allows you to "flash" the Maestro RR with the appropriate firmware to prepare it for installation. Just visit iDatalink's Weblink site, and follow the instructions. System Requirements for Weblink 6.3 include:

  • Windows 2000 (SP4), XP (SP2), Vista, 7, 8, 8.1, or 10
  • Administrative rights on your PC
  • Internet Explorer 7.0 or greater (excluding 64-bit version)
  • Available USB port
Note: iDatalink Maestro RR is not compatible with a Mac.

Aftermarket Radio Compatibility: The iDatalink Maestro RR (ADS-MRR) is fully compatible with select aftermarket receivers with an iDatalink Serial Port and partially compatible with non-serial port aftermarket head unit. Features will vary by vehicle and type of aftermarket head unit.

  • Fully Compatible Serial Port Aftermarket Receivers: The iDatalink Maestro RR is fully compatible with the select Kenwood, JVC, Alpine, and Pioneer in-dash receivers which feature an iDatalink Serial Port. Click here for a list of compatible radios.
    • Kenwood Notes: Select 2016 Kenwood DDX and DNX receivers will require a firmware update for full iDatalink Maestro RR compatibility. For interfacing the Maestro RR with a Kenwood 2012 DNX/DDX-series receivers, you'll want to add the iDatalink Maestro ADS-HRN(SX)-ALL01 cable (794HRNSXA1, sold separately).
    • Pioneer Note: 2014 AVIC-NEX series and 2015 AVH-X series receivers require a firmware update. 2014-2015 Pioneer receivers are not compatible with Maestro RR's "Extra Gauges" feature.
  • Partially Compatible Non-Serial Port Radios: The ADS-MRR is also compatible with non-serial port radios from Alpine, Axxera (Dual), Blaupunkt, Boyo, Clarion, Eclipse, Jensen, JVC, Kenwood, Pioneer, and Sony.

Navigation Outputs: The ADS-MRR provides a VSS (vehicle speed sense), Foot Brake, Parking Brake, and a Reverse Light output to make installing practically any aftermarket navigation radio simpler and less time consuming in select Ford/Lincoln/Mercury, GM, Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep, Toyota/Scion, Honda, Fiat and Volkswagen vehicles.

Steering Wheel Controls: The iDatalink Maestro RR also lets you retain your Ford/Lincoln/Mercury, GM, Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep, Toyota/Scion, Honda/Acura, Fiat and Volkswagen vehicle's OEM steering wheel controls when replacing the factory radio with an aftermarket stereo that offers a SWC input. In addition to retaining the original steering wheel functions, you can assign secondary press & hold features to the buttons of your choice. There is only one wire that will have to be spliced when installing this interface in your compatible Ford/Lincoln/Mercury vehicle. However, if the vehicle was equipped with factory navigation, there will be no extra SWC wires to connect in the vehicle. You will not have to splice any wires to get SWC functionality in a compatible GM, Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep, Toyota/Scion, Honda/Acura, Fiat, or Volkswagen vehicle.

Note: Steering wheel controls work with the following brands - Alpine, Axxera (Dual), Blaupunkt, Boyo, Clarion, Dual, Eclipse, JVC, Kenwood, Pioneer, and Sony. Other brands are not supported.

Amp Turn-On Lead: The ADS-MRR provides an amp turn-on lead to turn on any factory amps when installing virtually any aftermarket head unit. Both balance & fade control are retained in many vehicles with analog amplifier systems. iDatalink Serial Port compatible head units from Kenwood, JVC, Alpine, and Pioneer also support fading in vehicles with digital amplifier systems.

Note: If you are installing an aftermarket head unit that does not feature an iDatalink serial port, then you will not be able to fade in vehicles with digital amplifier systems. In this case, adjust the factory amplifier's fader prior to installation of the new aftermarket head unit.

Extra features: When installing an iDatalink Serial Port compatible Kenwood, JVC, Alpine, or Pioneer in-dash receiver in select Ford/Lincoln/Mercury, GM, Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep, Toyota/Scion, Honda/Acura, Fiat, and Volkswagen vehicles, the iDatalink Maestro RR offers Extra features. The Following Extra features will vary by aftermarket head unit and make/model/year vehicle.

  • Climate Controls: Control your climate, defrost, and heated seat settings directly from your aftermarket head unit's LCD touchscreen.
  • Vehicle Info: Monitor your car's door status, tire pressure, read and reset engine codes and more directly from your aftermarket head unit's LCD touchscreen.
  • Gauges: Displays speed, boost, turbo, RPM, engine temperature and more directly on your aftermarket head unit's LCD touchscreen.
  • Visual Parking Assistance: Displays visual proximity indicators directly on your aftermarket head unit's LCD touchscreen for extra security.
Note:  2014-2015 Pioneer receivers with the iDalink Serial Port and non-serial port aftermarket radios do not support these Extra features.

Installation Note: Connecting the module, vehicle specific harness, and aftermarket head unit together requires hard-wiring numerous wires by soldering or using Posi-Twist connectors.

2013 Subaru WRX STi. After speaking with an iDatalink adviser I decided to give it a try. I want the SW interface and gauges. Crutchfield doesn't list it for my vehicle because "you lose some of the factory settings", ie there are things you can do with the factory head unit that you can't do with an aftermarket head unit, but you lose that no matter what brand of receiver you buy and no matter what SW interface you install. You will want to contact an Advisor by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat to discuss compatibility with your factory system. They will be able to pull up your vehicle and see if this will integrate. If it does not, then they will also be able to discuss other options with you. [ Krissy  Aug 22, 2018 ]  Staff
This module was mainly for me to retain my steering wheel controls. I don't think it has anything to do with outputting video. I think as long as the new unit has additional video output you should be okay. If, your Dodge has controls on your steering wheel to control your radio you will definitely need this as long as it's the one crutchfield recommends. Hope that helps!. [ David  Aug 05, 2018 ]
The information we have access to on the programming options of this interface doesn't specify the type of sound that is produced when the turn signal alert occurs. But I do see that the alert tone is programmable so I don't expect that you will be forced into either, but can choose the alert tone. Sorry, no; the iDatalink Maestro ADS-MRR and it's harnesses are not recommended for your vehicle. You'll find the installation accessories we do recommend for your vehicle by using the "Find What Fits" application on the main Crutchfield website: https://www.crutchfield.com/car/carselector.aspx?lp=%2fCar%2foutfitmycar%2fmycar.aspx For additional assistance and personalized recommendations, feel free to contact us directly by phone or through our online chat service: https://www.crutchfield.com/support/ContactUs.aspx [ Ryan  Jun 20, 2018 ]  Staff
The optional vehicle specific harness helps you complete the install with splicing the least amount of wires. Technically, this interface can be installed without that optional harness, but it is then a complete cut/splice installation to the stock wiring and the level of difficulty increases exponentially. Because of this, we recommend getting the optional harness for your Ram vehicle. We have advisors that you can call on 1-800-324-9695 for help getting the correct one! I used this kit to integrate factory steering wheel controls with my Pioneer head unit. That is all it is used for to my knowledge. If your stereo picks up vehicle information such as door open, tire pressure, and malfunction indicator lights, that is achieved through connecting the radio to the OBD2 connector. I used the maestro to assign volume, next track, and phone call buttons on the steering wheel to functions on the radio. [ chris  May 13, 2018 ]
The I data link is necessary so you can use your factory controls in your car I E satellite radio if equipped when I consulted Crutchfield . As far as I know, the equipment in question is only for the steering wheel controls for the audio system. I don't see how this unit would be able to control the heat/AC unit unless the controls are also on the steering wheel. [ William  Jan 20, 2018 ]
