Stereo integrated amplifier with built-in DAC
Our take on the Yamaha A-S301 by Crutchfield's David Brown
A smart buy for your stereo speakers
Behind every pair of great speakers, there's a great amplifier. But great doesn't have to mean expensive. The Yamaha A-S301 is a budget-friendly mate for your stereo speakers. This streamlined stereo amp offers solid power alongside sound that's clean and crisp. Anti-resonance construction, a symmetrical circuit layout, and Pure Direct listening mode keep unwanted distortion and interference from cluttering signals. Your music will sound cleaner, so more of those fine details shine through.
Connect your TV and Blu-ray player
The A-S301 has six pairs of analog RCA inputs, including a phono input for connecting a turntable. But music sources aren't the only possibilities: optical and coaxial digital audio inputs let you bring video devices into the fold. Connect a TV or Blu-ray player to these inputs, and enjoy movie sound through your stereo speakers with this amp. It's a cost-effective way to build an excellent two-channel rig in your TV room that offers dynamic sound with a wide stereo image.

"Natural Sound" Concept: Yamaha, with a long history of over 125 years as a musical instrument maker, also has a high reputation for HiFi components. Yamaha's A-S301 integrated amplifier takes advantage of this rich experience and high technological expertise. Based on the concept of "Natural Sound", for reproducing all music as it really sounds, and built with scrupulous care from circuit design to basic sound production, the A-S301 reproduces high sound quality and musically rich sound.
Proprietary Yamaha Technologies: The Yamaha AS-301 integrated amplifier employs proprietary Yamaha technologies for optimum performance and sound reproductions.
- ToP-ART Design: When processing and transmission of the audio signal is simple and direct there is less chance of it being affected by noise and distortion. Yamaha's amplifier design technology called "ToP-ART" features an I/O (input to output) Direct Symmetrical Design, with left and right channels organized in a straight, symmetrical layout for highest signal purity.
- ART (Anti-Resonance and Tough): In addition, the ART (Anti-Resonance and Tough) Base bottom chassis and a solid center bar provide high-rigidity support and vibration damping.
High Current Amplifier: The Yamaha A-S301 features a dynamic, high current stereo amplifier with low impedance drive capability. The amp is rated at 60 watts x 2-channels, measured from 20-20 kHz into 8Ω with 0.019% THD (70watts x 2-channels, measured from 20-20 kHz into 6Ω with 0.038% THD).
High Quality Parts: Custom-made power transformer, custom-made block capacitors, two direct signal path speaker relays, one-point grounding system, aluminum-extruded heat sinks and other top-quality parts effortlessly handle demanding audio signal conditions. The quality of each individual part, as well as how they work together, basically determines the sound quality of any component. Yamaha uses only very high quality parts, carefully selected and tested.
Sophisticated Front-Panel Design: With a beautifully simple and unique design inherited directly from Yamaha's HiFi audio components, this amplifier also boast an easy-to-operate button layout. The aluminum front-panel has a richly textured silver hairline finish. The control knobs are also of the same luxurious construction as used on our top-end models. The rotary encoder makes it quick and easy to select input sources. The luxury hairline finish material offers a nice tactile feeling. LEDs clearly show which source is selected, so you can easily switch sources even in a dark room
Pure Direct Mode: The Pure Direct mode causes the music signals to travel the shortest possible circuit route, bypassing the buffer amp and the tone, loudness and balance controls to virtually eliminate any signal degradation for the purest sound quality.
Variable Loudness Control: The A-S301 also feature a new analog loudness control on the front-panel that uses electronic volume for higher sound quality, which lets you adjust the loudness effect as desired. Separate from the overall volume, this controls the balance of the low- and high- frequency sounds, providing full tonal range at any volume level; compensating for the natural loss in the human ear of high and low frequencies at soft levels.
Tone Controls: The integrated amplifier features independent bass (20 Hz) and treble (20 kHz) controls so you can increase or decrease the low and high frequency response (+/-10dB). You can also adjust the output balance of the left and right speakers.
Impedance Switch: The integrated amplifier features a rear-panel impedance switch to match the impedance level of the speakers connected. Choose High or Low:
- High: Select High if using one set (A or B) of speakers with impedance of 6-ohm or higher; when bi-wiring the impedance of the speaker must also be 6-ohms or higher.
- Low: Select Low if using one set (A or B) of speakers with the impedance of 4-ohm to 6-ohm; if using two sets (A and B) of speakers simultaneously, the impedance of each speaker must be at least 8-ohms; when bi-wiring the impedance of the speaker must also be 4-ohms to 6-ohms.
Simple Remote Control: The clean, simple design of the remote control provides easy-to-understand one-hand operation. The easy-to-use design makes it simple to adjust song volume and order. The remote has a sophisticated looking hairline finish that matches the design of the amplifiers. You can also use the remote to control a Yamaha CD/SACD player.
Auto Power Standby: The amplifier has a power management function that detects when it hasn't been used for a long time (about 8 hours) even though the power is on, and automatically shifts it into standby mode. So even if you forget to turn it off, power consumption will be minimized.
Analog & Digital Inputs: The Yamaha A-S301 integrated amplifier offers analog & digital inputs for connection of a variety of home audio components.
- RCA + Phono: The Yamaha integrated amplifier is equipped with six analog stereo (RCA) inputs for connecting external analog audio sources, including a turntable. The Phono input can be used to connect a turntable with an MM phono cartridge to play vinyl records. The unit's Phono input also features a ground terminal.
- Optical & Coaxial Digital Inputs: The A-S301 is equipped with both optical (toslink) and coaxial (RCA) digital audio inputs. The optical and coaxial inputs will accept 2ch PCM (not Dolby Digital/DTS). The audio stays in the digital domain, giving you pure, pristine dynamic sound for all your entertainment sources, from sports and other programs to movies and concerts.
Recording Outputs: There are also two pair of RCA outputs for recording audio through the amplifier to recording device.
A & B Speaker Terminals: The Yamaha integrated amplifier features binding post terminals for its A & B speaker outputs. You can use the A & B speaker outputs to power two pair of speakers, or bi-wire a single pair of compatible speakers. The terminals are not 5-way binding posts because a plastic collar prevents their use with spade lugs and they are too far apart for dual banana plugs.
Sub Output: A terminal for connecting a subwoofer is provided, allowing you to increase the bass output of your system for a more powerful sound with better overall sound quality
Headphone Output: The A-S301 integrated amplifier is equipped with a front-panel 1/4" headphone output for connecting a pair of headphones (sold separately). The headphone output and speaker outputs will work simultaneously; you will need to rotate the speaker selector switch on the front-panel to the Off position to turn off the sound from your connected speakers.

I picked this unit to improve the sound of the TV which has terrible sound quality. Power should be more than adequate. I have an option to use it on my stereo system also or I can set up another stereo system associated with the TV. I really like the digital inputs and the woofer output and the other usual inputs seem adequate I am looking forward to this unit in 4 days as I live in southern California. [ ROGER L Jan 22, 2017 ]
Replacing a 30 year old integrated amp in order to have DAC connection to blue ray player. Old amp had become noisy and phono inputs had failed. [ Edward Jan 03, 2017 ]
Needed an integrated amplifier for the house, with ancient speakers. Required 2+2 technology, not wishing to change everything for 5+1 or better. This one has exactly the features I was looking for. [ David S. Nov 25, 2016 ]
I have had a Yamaha amp since 1974 back in the days of the CA-400, CA-600 style amps. I still have the CA-600 and it still works. These new Yamaha amps gave me a chance to upgrade to more power and more wiring options including the optical and coaxial inputs, something I really needed. Looking for a good sounding amp for playback of live music recordings made with analog and digital equipment. [ Thomas Feb 24, 2016 ]
Needed an amp with a built in DAC (with a coaxial digital or optical digital input) so I could use my new Sony Blu-ray player which does not have RCA L/R audio outputs. [ Roger L. Feb 18, 2016 ]
This integrated unit allows me to bi wire my two way speakers which I built with separate crossover networks for bass/mid and tweeter and provides a subwoofer preamp out (set at 100hz by Yamaha) which allows me to keep the bass/mid drivers excursion under control at high volume. [ James Feb 17, 2016 ]
Did a lot of research and the Yamaha A-S301 had the right combination of features (good power, tone and loudness controls but also allows them to be bypassed, accepts both analog and digital inputs) and high ratings for the right price. My only wish is that it also included a switched power outlet but not willing to pay $150 more for that feature. Actually bought this as a "scratch and dent" which I've never done before - hope that works out OK. [ Michael Feb 15, 2016 ]

18 questions already asked
The subwoofer crossover frequency output is not adjustable. (i.e. Cut Off Frequency: 100 Hz) I am taking the Subwoofer output of this amp into my Subwoofer's (Klipsch Model R-10SWi) LFE input. The Klipsch SW has a Gain and Low Pass frequency adjustment. (i.e. 40 Hz, 80 Hz, 120 Hz, LFE) These two pieces of equipment work great together. [ Robert May 24, 2018 ]
I love this amp and own two of them. Both have Klipsch subs hooked up & sound awesome. I run the subs strait out of the amp and use the adjustable crossover on the sub to adjust cross over frequency and gain. Some experimenting and critical listening is required. A little adjustment can go a long way. The results are well worth the effort. Keep in mind that your room has a lot to do with response so placement is also a factor. Crossover point also will effect the Omni-directional characteristics of the sub so listen closely as it can effect the stereo field/image (can be a benefit in some rooms). Keep your vocals clear and center stage...a good reference point while setting the system up. Hope this helps. [ Fred R. May 24, 2018 ]
No. But I have a powered sub-woofer. Sounds great. I read that 'Most modern AV receivers feature an auto EQ program that will assign the proper crossover frequency automatically based on the capabilities of your loudspeakers.' Can't find any info on this for the A-S301. [ Charles May 24, 2018 ]
The sub out only removes most of the highs and mids. It also sends bass effects from a movie source. Your sudwoofer should have the necessary crossover pointe built into tis amp. All subs sound best crossed over at 100HZ and below regardless of main speaker size. Good listening Matt B [ EUGENE May 24, 2018 ]
Digital amp...it's awsome especially with my Klipsch speakers! [ Linda Mar 18, 2018 ]
It is not digitally powered [ William Mar 17, 2018 ]
It's a standard class A/B amp with optical and coaxial inputs, not a class D. It has a built-in DAC but not USB capabilities, you will have to move up to the A-S801 for that. [ don Mar 14, 2018 ]
Thanks for your question. For information on comparing two or more models I would recommend reaching out to an Advisor by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat. They will be able to help determine the differences and help you make the best choice for your system and your budget. [ Krissy Dec 19, 2017 ] Staff
I live in the US. Mine that I purchased in 2016 is silver. [ Manuel Dec 07, 2017 ]
You would have to ask Crutchfield. [ Roger L. Dec 06, 2017 ]
I am not familiar with the Sonos Connect so I can not address. I do not believe that the A-S301 has any digital outputs ... only digital inputs. [ Eileen Jan 12, 2017 ]
I do not think so but I love how mine works to power the Sonos connect vs the powered Sonos. So much more power this way... [ DAVID Jan 10, 2017 ]
I'm not familiar with your proposal. The Yamaha has 2 digital "inputs" via coaxial and/ or optical. I use the optical for the TV. The digital audio format is PCM (2-ch) and word depth is 24/16 bit. I don't own a Sonos however believe it is basically an output product to an amp. I hope this helps. [ william Jan 10, 2017 ]
Yes.You can use the amp as an input to the sonos connect [ EDWIN Jan 10, 2017 ]
yes [ robert Jan 03, 2017 ]
They work with my A-S301. [ Wlodzimierz Jan 03, 2017 ]
should be fine. I'm using plugs and bare wires to bi amp, or bi-wire, as the case may be... [ Roger Jan 03, 2017 ]
I don't use banana plugs on mine but my manual shows how to connect them on North American versions of the A-S301. [ Daniel Jan 03, 2017 ]
Yes, standard banana plugs are what I'm using. [ Timothy Jan 03, 2017 ]
I would say so. It's a pretty nice quality amp in an age when not to many good ones are made anymore. I run both a CD/DVD player and an iPod through this unit and I have been very pleased with the results. [ Tom Sep 23, 2016 ]
I do not know. I never thought of connecting an ipod to A-S301 because it is a bit too good to use with an ipod. If you connect it, I am sure that the 301 will not add distortion to the sound. [ Wlodzimierz Sep 23, 2016 ]
See question and answers re Bluetooth connectivity on the Crutchfield website for the unit. I do not use Bluetooth. Mine is connected to my pc to run Spotify. [ FREDERICK Sep 23, 2016 ]
this is an excellent amplifier, any source, like an iPod would work great with it,depending upon which iPod you have, you might be able to find a dock that allows the digital signal from the iPod to go digital into the Yamaha for even better performance [ JOHN Sep 23, 2016 ]
It's got digital and analog, so I like that I can do LPs and mp3s. How will you hook up the iPod? I got Apple TV to make it east to play music off my iPhone, but I don't know if iPod has Airplay. If the amp has an AUX in, I guess you could get an RCA to 1/8" cable. [ Lawrence Sep 23, 2016 ]
We use it frequently for streaming from Apple Music or Spotify via an iPad or iPhone. Whether it works for you is all about how much of an audiophile you are. If you are happy with digital streaming the Yamaha is warm and a very solid integrated amplifier. We also use it for our DVD/Video streaming and while only stereo are happy enough (good pair of Peachtree audio speakers and Cambridge subwoofer). It a great lower priced product. If y\ou are a hardcore audiophile you will want some tube amp or something much higher end. [ Jeffrey Sep 23, 2016 ]
Yes. I exclusively use my iPhone using Bluetooth and a DAC and get excellent results. [ David Wayne Sep 23, 2016 ]
I use it with both a CD player and an Airport express playing iTunes. For the airport express I use a Toslink cable that connects to the optical input on the amp. This way the amp is decosing the digital music, which should sound better. With a good set of speakers I assume the ipod will sound great. [ Daniel Sep 23, 2016 ]

The amp will power off after 8 hrs. of nonuse if the auto power switch is set to "on". If the auto power switch is set to "off" then the amp will remain on. Hope this helps. [ Roger L. Aug 07, 2016 ]
Yes but it's quite long. 8 hours. You can download a PDF of any owners manual from Crutchfield to see Ali the features of a particular unit. [ James Aug 05, 2016 ]
Yes - there is an auto standby switch on the back panel which you can disable. It'll put the amp in standby after 8 hours of no signal. [ Adam Aug 05, 2016 ]
haven't the faintest idea. In fact, I'm so out of it I don't even know what an REC is. I'll tell you this: it sounds great, really great--definitely improved the sound of my speakers, and I'd been using a pretty good Onkyo receiver. [ Roger Jul 24, 2016 ]
Sorry, but I don't know the answer to your question. [ Patton B. Jul 24, 2016 ]
I have used the record out ports to feed a signal to another amp while utilizing a cd player via the optical input. BuzzMann [ Eileen Jul 22, 2016 ]
The internal circuitry has a DAC. So the digital signal is converted for audible use. [ Dean Jul 22, 2016 ]
Darrel, I'm afraid you can't connect an analog REC output to a digital input. Digital signals consist of binary bits like those found in computers. Analog signals are wave forms that correspond to the waves of sound moving through the air. Digital signals require a digital-to-analog converter to create waves out of bits. Digital inputs take signals from digital sources like some DVD and CD players. The Yamaha A-S301 Integrated Amplifier will convert these signals to high-quality analog wave forms to play through the speakers. The jacks for analog and digital connections are different too. The A-S301 will accept only RCA plugs in the analog jacks. Therefore, you can only connect analog peripherals to the analog jacks and digital peripherals to the digital inputs. Terry [ Terry Jul 22, 2016 ]
9 answers Can this unit receive a Bluetooth signal from (for example) an iPhone, convert that signal to analog, and output it through wired speakers? My con-ops is to keep my music library in the iCloud, access songs with an iPhone or iPad, and listen to them through wired speakers that I already own. [ John Mar 05, 2016 ]
Should not be an issue. Receiver is Bluetooth ready. You'll need Yamaha YBA-11 wireless adapter- available from Crutchfield for $50. [ FREDERICK Mar 11, 2016 ]
Yes, it can when an optional BT receiver is installed. [ Stephen Mar 07, 2016 ]
It's possible; however, the unit is "Bluetooth-ready," meaning one has to purchase the optional Yamaha YBA-11 adapter. [ Patton B. Mar 06, 2016 ]
No. This unit is designed for higher fidelity input. Add an Apple Airport Express, use an optional optical cable out, then into the Yamaha's digital input. High quality files from sreaming (Spotify) as opposed to lower sample itunes type files sound fantastic with this set-up. [ DANIEL B Mar 06, 2016 ]
It cannot receive a Bluetooth signal directly because it does not have any built in networking capability. However I simply connect my Apple Airport Express to it and play music from my iPhone and MacBook. Works great and sounds great. [ Daniel Mar 06, 2016 ]
It doesn't directly receive a Bluetooth signal. It has standard RCA inputs plus fiber optic and coax digital inputs. You would need to get something to convert the Bluetooth to one of those formats. [ William Mar 06, 2016 ]
Yes , I have a bluetoorh unit hooked into my amp , and it plays over the speakers , works nicely .. [ William Mar 05, 2016 ]
I run my MacBooks and iPhone through an Apple TV into the "optical" input, and it goes to wired speakers just like my CD player and turntable. [ Lawrence Mar 05, 2016 ]
Yes, but you will need an external Bluetooth bridge. I use an AirPlay unit instead. Check out the Motorolla DC800 if you are set on using Bluetooth. [ EDMOND R Mar 05, 2016 ]
The only input that the DAC uses is the optical input. You can try using a product like a Chromecast Audio, which has optical out. You'd use an app like BubbleUPnP or various others to "cast" your files. [ Timothy Jan 03, 2017 ]
I am not sure about "access the DAC in the amp. I have run a cable from an IPod. shuffle to the RCA input and it works fine. I am thinking it has already run through a DAC in the IPod. I am plugged in to the same jack that would output to head phones or ear buds. It is a nice amp and I am really happy with it. [ Bruce Jan 08, 2016 ]
I'm no audiophile, but I would think you can do. I have my PC connected to the amp via the headphone jack on the PC connected to the PB inputs on the amp (3rd pair down). I have no problem listening to Spotify from my computer. Just need to turn off the computer speakers. [ FREDERICK Jan 08, 2016 ]
NO, there is no facility to access the DAC from a phone unless you have access to the digital stream from the phone, and that is usually via a USB cable [ JOHN Jan 08, 2016 ]
Yes. The S301 is optimized for stereo listening, and the VR-7080 is optimized for home theater. There are several features on this receiver designed to optimize your stereo reproduction. [ Jeff Sep 14, 2015 ] Staff
Never connect a single speaker to only one of the terminals. You could connect a center speaker adding a crossover and then you need to connect both terminals. [ JAVIER Sep 09, 2015 ]
You could, but tho wouldn't wouldn't have any balance, and therefore be limited to either left or right channel output. [ Stephen Sep 06, 2015 ]
Yes [ REBECCA Sep 04, 2015 ]
You can , as long as the speaker you use can take the power & base , because it will be a full range signal coming out.. [ William Sep 04, 2015 ]
No, "B" set is Left and Right a "center" channel has much different information [ JOHN Sep 04, 2015 ]
I am afraid I do not know [ Dan Sep 04, 2015 ]
Not technically or experienced qualified to answer your question for sure, but my thought is, YES, you can hook up three out of the 4 speakers that the A&B setting would play, but your third speaker would either be playing R or L channel sound depending on how you connect your third speaker. If your third speaker has the wiring to connect a R&L to it, my guess is it would definitely work relative to providing "Center" sound. Sorry Joseph, best I can provide. Haven't tried it, and don't know for sure otherwise. [ David Sep 04, 2015 ]
Try it and see - I mean hear!. I think it's geared for 2.1 rather than 3.1 [ FREDERICK Sep 04, 2015 ]
Mike- the knobs are plastic as previously answered. But that is the short answer. The functionality and performance of this integrated amp is exceptional. I don't know what you need but here is my setup for rock and dance music, movies and sporting events- The A-S301 A pair of KEF Q300 sitting on pro quality homemade ear level, when sitting, stands (sub-woofer not needed) A 56" Samsung HDTV, and A decent quality Samsung Blu-ray player. I find surround sound tedious. My rec room is 16' x 30'. For normal somewhat loud sound the amp is no more than 35-40% power. Hopes this info better helps you your decision. I think they are metal. And like all Yamaha Equipment, very high Quality. It just doesn't have the power I need to push 4 Infinity Speakers and a big Infinity sub-woofer. I'm trying to find another application for it. I'm going back to my 24 years old Kenwood that I paid Wilson Brothers of Fairfax (Wilm.) DE to tweak @ 18 years ago. I never turned it up past 1/2 way , and it was beyond great. Anyway, good luck . If you are interested in a slightly used Yamaha Amp , I'm ready to ship it at a discounted rate. All the Best. No idea, probably a composite material, the knobs feel sturdy. Remember is a cheap amp. For the price you obtain what you paid. [ JAVIER Jun 23, 2015 ]
