A slimline receiver that's serious about sound

Marantz slimline receivers have been among our favorites for years. And our customers love them too. The feedback is consistent: these low-profile receivers fit in tight spaces, they're easy to set up, and they deliver rich, powerful sound. The 7.2-channel NR1608 offers full support for 4K Ultra HD video, flexible connections, and next-level wireless streaming features. Dolby Atmos and DTS:X surround sound decoding bring movie soundtracks to life with heart-pounding realism.

Built for solid audio performance

The NR1608 features high-current discrete power amplifiers on all seven channels for powerful, precise sound. At 50 watts per channel, there's plenty of power to fill small- to medium-sized rooms with thrilling sound. This receiver lets you enjoy clear, detailed music with playback of high-resolution audio formats. Special processing cleans up lower-resolution audio formats, letting you get the most out of the ample streaming music choices you get through Wi-Fi, Bluetooth®, and Apple® AirPlay®.

Streamline your music with HEOS

Built-in HEOS technology lets you access all of your music — from your personal library, internet radio, and popular streaming services like Pandora®, Spotify®, and TIDAL.

This receiver can be easily integrated into a wireless multi-room audio system. Stream music to HEOS wireless speakers in different rooms, and control each room's speakers independently with the free HEOS app. The app lets you control playback, browse music sources, and select which rooms you want to use. Play the same music throughout your home, or listen to something different in each room.

Customizable amp configurations let you set up the system you want

The NR1608's surround back channels can be used in whichever of four different configurations suits you best, starting with a standard 7.2-channel surround sound setup. You can use the surround back channels as height channels in a 5.2.2 Dolby Atmos setup, or to bi-amp your front speakers for more powerful sound. Or, you can set up a 5.2-channel surround sound system in your living room and use the surround back channels to power a pair of speakers in a second area like a kitchen or patio.

7-Channel Discrete Amplifier: The Marantz NR1608 is equipped with a power amplifier that reproduces high-fidelity sound in surround mode with equal quality and power for all channels, true to the original sound. The power amplifier circuit adopts a discrete-circuit configuration that achieves high-quality surround sound reproduction. The seven channel amplifier is rated at 50 watts with 2 channels driven (20-20kHz, 8-ohms, 0.08% THD). The NR1608 features low-impedance drive capability, for excellent speaker control, and is compatible with 4-16 Ω speakers.

Amplifier Assignment: The NR1608's seven discrete amplifier channels can be configured to accommodate your type of home theater setup.

    • Surround Back: The AV receiver's amplifier channels can be configured as Front Left/Right, Center, Surround Left/Right, and Surround Back Left/Right for Dolby TrueHD & DTS-HD 7.1ch playback.
    • Front Height: The receiver's amplifier channels can also be configured as Front Left/Right, Front Height Left/Right, Center, and Surround Left/Right for more front effects during 7.1ch playback.
    • Top Front/Middle: This amplifier configuration provides 5.1.2ch playback using top front or top middle speakers for Dolby Atmos or DTS:X.
    • Dolby Front/Surround: This amplifier configuration provides 5.1.2ch playback using front or surround Dolby Atmos enabled speakers.
    • Bi-Amp: You can configure the amplifier for front bi-amp operation to achieve a higher-quality 2-channel sound by connecting the receiver's front and surround back channels to your main front speakers (if compatible). Receiver will be limited to 5.1ch surround.
    • Zone 2: The NR1608's amplifier channels can be configured as Front Left/Right, Center, Surround Left/Right, and Zone 2 for Dolby Digital & DTS 5.1ch playback in the main zone and 2ch PCM playback in the second zone.
    • Front B: A second set of front speakers can be powered by the surround back amplifier; the receiver will be limited to 5.1ch surround. This is useful when you want to have a dedicated pair of 2ch speakers, in addition to your home theater speakers. If you choose to play the Front A and Front B speakers at the same time, Front B will play the same exact audio source and audio signal as Front A without down-mixing.

Compatible Digital Audio Formats: The AV receiver supports the following stereo & multichannel digital audio formats through its HDMI jacks and optical/coax digital inputs.

Digital Audio Connector Audio Signal Type Audio Signal Format

Immersive Surround Sound: The Marantz NR1608 AV receiver goes beyond regular surround with the latest immersive surround sound formats - like Dolby Atmos or Dolby Surround and DTS:X, DTS Neural:X, or DTS Virtual:X (future firmware update).

    • Dolby Atmos: Dolby Atmos surround sound technology dispenses with channel-based coding in favor of more advanced object-based coding, giving the soundtrack designer the ability to precisely place sounds anywhere in the 3-dimensional space. Now you can enjoy this same award-winning technology at home with the NR1608 that lets you to connect a 5.1 surround sound speaker system and 2 additional overhead speakers or 2 Dolby Atmos elevation speakers for the ultimate home theater experience.
    • Dolby Surround: Dolby Surround offers an enhanced cinema experience to your 2ch or multichannel movie soundtracks using your existing 5.1ch, 7.1ch, or Dolby Atmos speaker setup. Dolby Surround enhances audio definition by improving the spatial dimension and overall audio definition of movie soundtracks. It does this by using four distinct surround zones that provide greater control over the exact placement of each detail in a movie sound track, so audio can be matched more accurately to the video on screen; this means more depth and greater realism for your movies. As a result, individual sounds are clearer and more distinct. It also improves the surround sound experience across the entire theater by widening the listening "sweet spot".
    • DTS:X: The latest immersive surround sound system, DTS:X features object-based audio coding that lets the soundtrack designer place sonic elements anywhere in the 3D acoustic soundspace, and provides for overhead speakers to deliver a stunning surround sound experience. Along with DTS:X decoding, the NR1608 features DTS-HD Master Audio decoding and other DTS audio technologies.
    • DTS Neural:X: Further, DTS:X incorporates Neural:X, the latest spatial remapping technology from DTS, which provides a fully immersive output for all types of source content; this includes DTS bitstreams and non-encoded (PCM) data. Neural:X delivers a thrilling sense of immersive sound to your speaker layout regardless of the original source format.
    • DTS Virtual:X: DTS Virtual:X bridges the gap between DTS:X and the reality of reality of most consumers' homes, allowing you to enjoy multi-dimensional sound regardless of room size, layout, or speaker configuration. DTS Virtual:X delivers an unprecedented acoustic performance regardless of speaker configuration or room layout with enhanced bass, crystal clear dialog, and enveloping sound thanks to Virtual Height & Virtual Surround processing based on psychoacoustics (not reflective surfaces). It will deliver an immersive sound experience regardless of room layout or speaker configuration (stereo, 2.1, 3.1, 5.1, 7.1, etc). Best of DTS Virutal:X supports any content from DVD, Blu-ray, UHD Blu-ray, and more.

Other Listening Modes: You can also choose from the one of the following Listening Modes.

    • Stereo Playback: Sound is output from the front left and right speakers, as well as the powered subwoofer. If multichannel signals are input, they are mixed down to 2-channel audio. The tone settings can be adjusted.
    • Virtual Surround: Enjoy surround effects using only the front speakers or set of headphones.
    • Multichannel Stereo: Left and right stereo channels are distributed to all the speakers so that stereo sound can be heard from all directions at any listening position.
    • Source Direct: Source Direct Mode provides playback of 2ch or Multichannel audio in its original form, without any surround or tone processing.
    • Pure Direct: Pure Direct Mode goes a step further by turning off the receiver's display and analog video circuitry to minimize the possibility of any noised being added to the audio signal.

Audyssey Bronze: The NR1608 features the Audyssey Bronze suite of powerful DSP features - including MultEQ speaker/room calibration, Dynamic Volume, and Dynamic EQ.

    • MultEQ: Via the supplied measuring microphone, Audyssey MultEQ measures all the speakers in your home theater during setup, including the subwoofer, and then generates multiple high precision DSP room acoustic correction filters, which together provide smoothest and most natural tonal balance, regardless of the brand or model of the various speakers. Up to six listening positions can be measured, configured, and recorded. MultEQ compensates for both time and frequency characteristics of the listening area based on "Audyssey Setup" measurement results. Selection is done from three types of compensation curves - Reference (default and recommended, L/R Bypass, Flat, and Off).
    • Dynamic Volume: Audyssey Dynamic Volume features advanced psycho-acoustic processing to deliver clear dialog and wide range sound at reduced volume levels so that you can enjoy theater-level clarity at whatever listening level you choose.
    • Dynamic EQ: Audyssey Dynamic EQ also features advanced DSP processing to deliver full range wide-band response, even at reduced volume levels. Dynamic EQ Reference Level Offset provides three offsets from the film level reference (5 dB, 10 dB, and 15 dB) that can be selected when the mix level of the content is not within the standard.

Audio Enhancements: The Marantz NR1608 receiver provides various audio enhancements to deliver a high-quality listening experience every time.

    • CINEMA EQ: The Cinema EQ function gently decreases the level of the extreme high frequencies, compensating for overly-bright sounding motion picture soundtracks. Select this function if the sound from the front speakers is too bright. This function only works in the Dolby Digital, DTS, Dolby Pro Logic, and DTS Neo:6 modes.
    • M-DAX: Compressed audio formats such as MP3, WMA (Windows Media Audio) and MPEG-4 AAC reduce the amount of data by eliminating signal components that are hard for the human ear to hear. The M-DAX function generates the signals eliminated upon compression, restoring the sound to conditions near those of the original sound before compression. It also corrects the sense of volume of the bass to obtain richer sound with compressed audio signals.
    • Dynamic Range Compression (DRC): Motion picture soundtracks have tremendous dynamic range (the contrast between very soft and very loud sounds). For listening late at night, or whenever the maximum sound level is lower than usual, Compressing the dynamic range allows you to hear all of the sounds in the soundtrack with reduced dynamic range. DRC works when playing program sources recorded in Dolby Digital or DTS.

Level Adjustments: The NR1608 provides the following level adjustments.

    • Source Level: This function adjusts the playback level of the currently selected input source's audio input. Use this feature if there are differences in the input volume levels between different sources. You can correct the playback level of the audio input from -12 to +12dB.
    • Dialogue Level: You can adjust the output level (+/-12dB) to clarify the dialogue output from the center channel.
    • Subwoofer Level: You can set the receiver's subwoofer output level (+/-12dB) independent from the other speaker levels and system's main volume.

Volume Settings: The NR1608 offers the following volume settings.

    • Volume Scale: You can choose to display an Absolute volume scale (0-98) or Relative volume scale (-79.5 to 18dB).
    • Volume Limit: You can set a maximum volume level of 0, -10, or -20 dB to limit the receiver's total volume output.
    • Power On Level: You can define the volume setting that is active when the power is turned on (0, 1-98, -79 to +18dB, or Last)
    • Mute Level: You can set the amount of attenuation for the audio muting circuit; -40dB or -20dB below current volume, or full mute (sound turned off entirely).

Audio Outputs: The Marantz AV receiver features color-coded binding-post speaker terminals, dual sub outputs, and a front-panel headphone jack.

    • Color-Coded Speaker Terminals: The receiver has binding-post terminals for all speaker connections. The binding-post terminals can accept bare wire, pin connectors, and banana plugs (single only). The receiver will accept speaker impedances of 4 to 16-ohm. The AV receiver comes with color-coded labels to easily identify which channel a speaker cable should be connected to. Since the speaker cables have labels in the same colors as the connectors on the NR1608's rear panel, there's no longer any confusion about which terminals they should be connected to.
    • Dual Sub Outputs: For compatibility with dual subwoofer home theater systems, the NR1608 features two non-discrete subwoofer outputs. With dual subwoofers, which can be placed in different parts of the room, you'll benefit from response averaging, which helps provide smoother and more detailed deep bass, compared to a conventional single subwoofer speaker system. The same signal is output from each sub output.
    • Front Outputs: This receiver features front channel line-level outputs to connect an external power amplifier to your front speakers for increased power output.
    • Headphone Jack: When headphones are plugged into the full-size 1/4" jack on the front panel, all the speakers are automatically muted.
    Video Section

HDMI 2.0b: Featuring eight HDMI inputs (including one conveniently located on the front-panel) and one HDMI output, the NR1608 incorporates an advanced video section that features the latest HDMI 2.0b specification, including support for 4K/60 Hz Ultra-HD video, 4:4:4 Pure Color sub-sampling, BT.2020 Wide Color Gamut, & High Dynamic Range (HDR). The NR1608 also features HDCP 2.2 compatibility, a requirement for 4K Ultra HD copy-protected content.

    • 4K/60Hz Pass-Through: The NR1608 supports up to 4K (3840x2160 pixels) video @ 60 frames per second on all of its HDMI inputs and output (pass-through only). It will also pass a 480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i, or 1080p video signals via HDMI.
    • HDCP 2.2: All of the receiver's HDMI jacks support HDCP 2.2, which fully complies with the latest copyright protection standard for 4K video transmission.
    • 4:4:4 Color Subsampling: All of the receiver's rear-panel HDMI jacks support RGB, YCbCr 4:4:4, YCbCr 4:2:2, and YCbCr 4:2:0 color subsampling (@ 60Hz or 50Hz). With 4:4:4 color subsampling, luminance (brightness) and chroma (color) are sampled at the same rate; resulting in an RGB color palette as big as the video sampling rate for a video image with more colors, plus greater color accuracy and detail. The front-panel HDMI only supports 4K 60/50Hz using format YCbCr 4:2:0 only.
    • Wide Color Gamut (BT.2020): The BT.2020 color standard delivers a much wider color gamut and represents about 75% of the total visual color spectrum, while the current Rec. 709 color standard selected as the color space for HDTVs and early generation 4K Ultra HDTVs covers only 35% of the total visual color spectrum.

HDR Compatibility: HDR provides enhanced picture quality by simultaneously enabling greater detail for both the dark and bright parts of an image. HDR reproduces a greater dynamic range of luminosity or brightness levels, creating greater contrast. This increased contrast reveals the subtle nuances of the image, from detailed blacks and shadows to the brightest whites and colors, plus greater depth. The receiver support HDR 10, Dolby Vision, and HLG (via 2017 firmware update).

    • HDR 10: HDR 10 is an open standard and currently the most popular HDR format on the market. It supports 10-bit color and 1,000 nits. It uses static metadata at the start of a movie to tell the receiver and your TV that the video content is encoded using HDR.
    • HLG (via 2017 Firmware Update): HLG (Hybrid-Log Gamma) is primarily designed for live video feed and over-the-air broadcasts. It uses no pre-encoded metadata and is backwards compatible with SDR. HLG's native compatibility allows much of today's existing SDR infrastructure to be re-used for HDR in the future.
    • Dolby Vision: Unlike HDR 10 which contains static metadata and HLG which uses no metadata, Dolby Vision utilizes dynamic metadata which adjusts brightness, color, and contrast automatically for each scene. Dynamic metadata carries information that maps every image to your TV's display capabilities, so you see more of what the content creator intended. Dolby Vision supports 12-bit color and 10,000 nits.

4K Video Upscaling: The AV receiver is equipped with a 4K video upscaler that allows standard definition (480i/480p) sources and high definition (720p/1080i/1080p) sources to be upconverted to 4K Ultra HD (3840x2160 pixels) for ultra high definition video images from any video source. This lets you connect all your analog (composite/component) or digital (HDMI) video sources to the NR1608 and then connect to your TV with just a single HDMI cable.

Other HDMI Features: The Marantz NR1608 AV receiver's HDMI connectivity also offers 3D video pass-through, ARC (Audio Return Channel), Deep Color & x.v.Color support, as well as an auto LipSync function.

    • 3D Ready: The NR1608 AV receiver supports 3D video pass-through (720p/1080p only) from connected 3D-compatible Blu-ray, games and broadcast devices to 3D-compatible HDTVs (all 3D components must be connected via HDMI). Special eyewear will be required for viewing 3D content.
    • ARC (Audio Return Channel): This feature of the NR1608's HDMI monitor output allows audio to be sent from your compatible HDTV to the receiver through the same HDMI cable already being used to send audio and video to your HDTV. This eliminates the need for extra cables connected to your television.
    • Deep Color & x.v.Color Support: The AV receiver supports Deep Color and x.v.Color content, which can display a larger color range than standard-definition schemes. The result is a more lifelike, vibrant picture.
    • LipSync: This function adjusts the delay between audio and video output. You can do this manually or have the receiver set the LipSync function automatically. When connected to a TV via HDMI the receiver automatically adjusts audio output timing (0-500ms) if the TV supports an automatic LipSync function. You can also manually delay the sound output up to 500ms to synchronize it with the video image.

HDMI Standby Pass-Through: When the AV receiver is in "Standby" mode and the HDMI Standby Pass-Through function is enabled, both audio/video streams from the receivers HDMI input will be output to your television, via the AV receiver's HDMI monitor output. Once the receiver is turned "On", only video will pass through the monitor output to your TV and the audio is directed to the receiver's speaker outputs.

    • HDMI Input: Selects the HDMI Input for which the HDMI Standby Pass-Through function is enabled.

Tidal's has two tiers standard and high-fidelity sound/cd quality which is their premium tier. Will the NR1608 stream Tidal's premium tier from the internet?

Yes according to the list of features as long as you pay a monthly subscription for the premium level. I personally have not subscribed to any premium services yet. Still enjoying Tune-In which has some hi-res aac choices.

Honestly, I'm not sure. If you are able to use their remote app, and install it from there, the receiver should be able to play it. I have never seen or heard of Tidal, but there may be the ability to download the app and stream it that way. Best of luck.

This Marantz should have absolutely no problem, but always chance may have buffering issues if internet bandwith not good, or if depending on wireless connections. We love our NR1608 & NR1603. We have one for upstairs, and one in the cave downstairs. It has all the power needed to manage anything we throw at it. We got the highest internet speed package available in our area. Playback of DSD and FLAC files via USB and networks This unit supports the playback of high resolution audio formats such as DSD (5.6 MHz) and FLAC 192 kHz files. It provides high quality playback of high resolution files.

Do they make a right angle power cord? Its nice have a smaller chassis but power cord makes it a tight fit in my cabinet
    andrew  Feb 22, 2019

Andrew, I'm sure that you can purchase a right-angle power cord. I know that Amazon has those in stock. Crutchfield may sell those as well. Just be sure you are purchasing one that matches or exceeds the specs on the Marantz supplied power cord. As for my Marantz it is still in the box unopened. Happy Listening, Steve

I have one connected. just rename the input you select to turntable or whatever you want. I have a phono pre amp also as there is not one in the Marantz
    standiford  Jan 22, 2019
    A
Absolutely yes you can. You will need a preamp between the turntable and the Marantz as the unit does not have one built in, which is better anyway as that allows you to choose the preamp of your liking. Let me know if you need additional info.
    larry  Jan 21, 2019

No. You would need a bi amp.

there are no phono inputs....if that is what you are looking for. but there is a USB input in the front panel.
    dari  Jan 21, 2019
    A
Not directly, just purchase a phono preamp, and take the output of that to one of the 2 Aux inputs. Be certain you get a preamp with the correct type of input for your phono cartridge, 95% are MM or moving magnet, the other 5% are the more $$ MC or moving coil type. You'll like the Marantz unit, hard to go wrong at this price.

I don't have a turntable but from everything I've seen on line the marantz nr1608 requires a phono pre amp.
    adam  Jan 21, 2019
    A
Depends if the turntable has an internal preamp. Some new turntables have that included. Old ones need what's called a phono preamp. This receiver does not have the preamp. Crutchfield has a lot of separate preamps that you can add to your system.

I understand that the Zone 2 output is only possible from the analog outputs and not HDMI. Is it possible to have HDMI audio in the main zone (while watching TV from cable box) and have Air Play sent out via Zone 2 simultaneously?

Will this Marantz NR1608 "play well" with a Marantz MM7025 amp driving the front main speakers? With the front main speakers connected this way, will it overpower and drown out the center and surround channels, since the MM7025 is so much more powerful? Or does this receiver know how to balance it out?

Hi Steve, yes they will play well together, and you will likely enjoy it. I pair my amp to a Marantz SR6011 for my front towers, and let the receiver handle the rest. The amp handles the demands of the towers better than my receiver can. The amp won't provide more 'volume', but more 'power, and stability' of the speakers. With a few tweaks to the level settings, you may find yourself listening to, and enjoying more music, as I have.

Nope. I have been loving the sound from my 47" floor standing Fluance signature speakers that are run by the 2 channel MM7025. Was watching Luke Cage, episode 7, I believe, when he and Iron Fist busted through that door. I have the volume level set at 55 when they hit the door, and I almost shook every glass off the shelves upstairs. I spent over $2500 in sound proofing the walls to keep from upsetting the family. Can't wait to let my son hear them.

Funny you ask this question. I use the MM7025 with a NR1607 currently for my fronts. No it will not drown out your center, and it sounds SO much better. I use this in our Master Bedroom setup with Definitive Technology SM65's in the front and a Definitive Technology Pro Center 2000. I bi-wire my SM65's with a set of Audioquest Rocket 33's from the MM7025 and use a Rocket 33 for my Center from the NR1607, use Pro Monitor 800's as my rears and NHT atmos speakers for my front Atmos speakers. Once you re-run through the Audyssey Calibration in full with the MIC (be sure to use a stand for best results) it balances it out beautifully and my fronts sound perfect, especially with quality cables bi-wired (bi-amp was better when these were my main speakers in our family room with 2 Rotel Amps but I upgraded and those fronts found there way to the Bedroom when I got this amp. Short answer, YES get the amp, it makes a world of difference, especially in 2 channel music listening.

Can I feed from this receiver to a powered sound bar for LCR and then to TV for video and use the receiver channels only for rear surrounds and subwoofer?

You can use the Pre Out Front R/L outputs (see page 20 of the PDF user manual, section 10) with a powered sound bar for the front speakers, but the center would have to be powered by the receiver; or, you could use a passive 3 or 5 channel soundbar powered by the receiver. Crutchfield has several of these.

I don't know get answer to the first part but the second answer is "No" because Spotify doesn't stream high res audio. Even the highest Spotify stream is less than CD quality.

Yes, as long as have an app on TV, like we do on our Samsung TV,s, or can use your external Roku or Tivo apps. What we really enjoy as well is casting Youtube from our iPhones or iPads.

I don't use streaming services, but according to the manual the NR 1608 "...can use many online music streaming services from the HEOS App. Depending upon your geographical location, there are several options to choose from." You can download the NR 1608 manual from the Marantz website.

No. The only streaming it can do is music via Spotify, Pandora, Tidal, Sirius, and I believe internet radio. You will need a separate device like ApplyTV, Chromecast, Roku, or FireTV to stream video content.

The Marantz's built-in Bluetooth is for receiving audio transmitted to it from your Bluetooth devices (smartphone, tablet, computer). It does not transmit to external Bluetooth speakers or headphones.

I have a new Marantz receiver that I've paired with a Bose 7 channel speaker syste, all are 8 ohms. The receiver routinely shuts down in the middle of TV shows or stereo use. I've had an electrician check the power source/outlet, which has no problems. Are the receiver and speaker system incompatible? Seems strange given that they are both such high end systems. Has anyone run into something like this? I would welcome thoughts on how to troubleshoot. Thx!
