About the Klipsch Reference Premiere RP-140D

James Ralston

This versatile home theater performer is ultra-compact

The Klipsch RP-140D is compact, flat, and wall-mountable — perfect for putting together a home theater system that stays out of the way visually but still packs a serious punch. It's part of the Reference Premiere lineup, which has been a favorite among our customers for years. Klipsch has managed to fit that ear-pleasing performance into a speaker that's only a foot tall (or wide, depending on how you place it) and 2-1/2" deep.

Klipsch has managed to fit that ear-pleasing performance into a speaker that's only a foot tall (or wide, depending on how you place it) and 2-1/2" deep.

Versatile options for your home theater installation

Given its small size, you might choose to use a pair of RP-140Ds as surround speakers along with Klipsch's larger on-wall models like the RP-640D or RP-240D for your front channels. Or, for smaller spaces, you could use five '140Ds along with a powered subwoofer of your choice.

Classic Klipsch sound

Klipsch famously mounts their tweeters inside of a flared opening, or horn. This feature helps control the way sound waves are projected into your room, for crisp, focused highs. The 90° x 90° Tractrix® horn used in the Reference Premiere series is a refined version that delivers a wider sweet spot with more precise placement of instruments and vocals.

The RP-140D teams its 1" titanium tweeter with a 3-1/2" copper-spun woofer. The drivers are mounted in a ported enclosure that helps reinforce the bass frequencies. You get richer sound than you'd expect from a speaker that's so compact.

Product Research

Features

Horn-Loaded Tweeter: The Klipsch Reference Premiere RP-140D features proprietary Tractrix Horn technology coupled with a Linear Travel Suspension (LTS) titanium tweeter to produce clean, natural high frequencies.

  • 90° x 90° Tractrix Horn: The Tractrix Horn's geometry helps to improve high-frequency response and extension, while enhancing imaging and dynamics. The 90° x 90° Tractrix Horn also focuses the high frequency sounds towards the listening area, for the cleanest, most natural sound possible.
  • LTS Tweeter: Behind the Tractrix Horn lies a 1" titanium tweeter with a Linear Travel Suspension (LTS) for open, natural, sound. The Linear Travel Suspension (LTS) minimizes distortion for enhanced, detailed performance.

Spun-Copper Cerametallic Woofer: The 3.5" woofer of the RP-140D loudspeaker features Klipsch's distinctive, spun-copper Cerametallic material. Made with an anodized aluminum, this cone is strong and dent resistant. The anodizing process converts its inner and outer surfaces to ceramic. The outcome is a rigid cone with superb damping characteristics that will not flex or resonate at frequencies within the woofer's operating range. The woofer also employs a rubber surround for added durability.

Bass Reflex Enclosure: The horn-loaded tweeter and spun-copper Cerametallic woofer are housed in a bass reflex enclosure with a rear/side firing port for greater efficiency and better midbass performance. The enclosure is made of ABS and features a matte black painted finish.

Wrap-Around Magnetic Grille: The Klipsch Reference Premiere series RP-140D on-wall loudspeaker features a removable, wrap-around cloth magnetic grille which easily snaps into place over the ABS enclosure.

Spring-Post Terminals: The RP-140D is equipped with spring-post terminals to connect bare speaker wire from 16AWG to 12AWG. Due to the position of the spring-post terminals they will not accept banana plugs or pin-connectors.

Applications: The RP-140D on-wall speaker can be used as a front, center, or surround speaker in a home theater setup.

  • Placement for Front Speakers: For the most spacious sound place a pair of speakers 6' to 15' apart with the listening position about 1-.5x the distance separating the speakers. However, excellent sound can still be achieved by placing these speakers close to both sides of your TV if that is more aesthetically pleasing.
  • Placement for Center Speaker: Since a center-channel speaker is designed to place dialogue and primary sounds so that they appear to come from the video screen. The speaker should therefore be placed horizontally, as close to the screen as possible, preferably at least 1" directly below the screen.
  • Placement for Rear speakers: As rear surrounds, a pair of speakers should be placed approximately 2' above the listening position (typically this will be about 5'-7'above the floor. The surrounds should be placed on the walls directly adjacent to the listening position or on the wall behind the listening position.

Mounting Options: The RP-140D on-wall loudspeaker can be mounted vertically or horizontally when wall-mounted or attached to the included table-top base. Dual four-way keyhole slots allow for easy, tight-to-the-wall mounting (mounting screws not included). The included glass base provides a table-top solution for placing the speaker on a stand, table, or shelf (the base attaches to the speaker using the two included screws when the speaker is mounted vertically and only one screw when the speaker is mounted horizontally).

  • Wall-Mount Dimensions:
    • Vertical: 6.0" (w) x 11.9375" (h) x 2.5" (d)
    • Horizontal: 11.9375" (w) x 6.0" (h) x 2.5" (d)
  • Table-Top Dimensions:
    • Vertical: 7.5" (w) x 13.5" (h) x 5.0" (d)
    • Horizontal: 11.9375" (w) x 6.875" (h) x 5.0" (d)

Customer Q&A

Q
For a small area, can this be used for a center speaker?
john  Feb 08, 2024
1 answer
A
Greetings John. Thank you for your question. Absolutely, in fact a lot of our customers use these for left, right and center speaker applications.
hogan  Feb 08, 2024 (Staff)
Q
Is this active or passive speaker? Also can I use this as rear right and rear left for 5.0 system?
cenk  Feb 04, 2023
1 answer
A
Greetings Cent, and thank you for your question. This speaker is passive. It would need speaker wire ran from your receiver/amplifier. It can be used for fronts, center channels, rears, or side surrounds.

Q
How does the sound quality compare to in-wall speakers? I have new construction and like the appeal of flexibility of mounting to the wall later as opposed to knowing exact placement now but have a feeling in-wall will perform better.

A
If you do research. The surround speakers should be angled at a certain degree towards your main sitting area. I built my own mounting brackets. Now i can aim them where i want. I have also read a lot of reviews of in-wall speakers rattling over time.
ronald  Jul 13, 2021
A
I have these the sound awesome
chad  Jul 12, 2021
A
I don't have any in-wall speakers to compare them with, but I intentionally avoided in-wall in my new house in case I decided to swap out my speakers. So far these sound perfectly fine, although I am using them primarily in a rear surround and ATMOS height speaker configuration. I'm using Klipsch RP-640D as the front L/R and center channel.
paul  Jul 12, 2021
A
In-wall speakers rarely match the performance of sealed speakers. In-wall are used when esthetics matter more than performance. In decreasing order of performance (generally speaking), you have floorstanding towers -> bookshelf -> on-wall -> in-wall. Having said all that, my basement theater uses RP-140D's for the rear L and R and and RP-640D's for the front L and R and they sound great - way better than I expected them to.

Q
Can these be connected to a articulating mount, so it can be angled on the wall?
colby  Mar 07, 2021

A
Only if you can one that lines up with the screw holes used for the included speaker stand. The wall mounting holes were strictly designed for mounting either vertically or horizontally on the wall (they are for hanging). You would have to be somewhat innovative to use the wall mounts for attaching to a mounting bracket.
paul  Mar 08, 2021
A
There is a screw hole in the back which can be used to attach a different wall mount. I have mine mounted to back wall for back channels.
john  Mar 08, 2021
A
I had to create my own Idea. I bought 2 sets of these mounts Echogear Wall & Ceiling Speaker Mount Pair - Universal mounts from amazon and I can adjust the angle.

Q
Where can I get a copy of the wall mounting template?
robert  Oct 23, 2020
2 answers
A
Hello Robert, I don't remember a template. The speaker mounts flat on the wall and you need to space the mounting screws depending on the speaker. I remember that spacing being given in the instructions. One other thing: if you want the speaker to be angled off the wall you will need to make something to do that. It would be nice if the manufacturer supplied a mounting for the speaker for an angled configuration off-the-wall but they don't. Hope this helps.
thomas  Nov 25, 2020
A
If you haven't already done so, contact Klipsch. They're usually pretty quick with responding.
paul  Nov 19, 2020
Q
can you connect this speaker (1 single) to 2 rear channels of a receivers, simultaniesly?
hector  Jun 08, 2020
1 answer
A
You can but you won't like the results. You typically want to keep the powered channels isolated from one another so the only practical way to do this would be to add some additional wiring (with resistors). You should be able to find some wiring diagrams that demonstrate how to convert stereo channels to a mono configuration if you are interested.
paul  Jun 08, 2020
Q
When using as atmos height speakers, how can they be angled/aimed at the main listening position safely (differ the screw height or stuff foam behind them)?
ezeepzee  Mar 04, 2020
1 answer
A
Hi Steve, thank you for your question. Since these speakers do not offer a swivel adjustment option, you would likely need to use something like foam to direct them to a more desirable location, as you mentioned above. Depending on your application, and existing speaker array, you may benefit from speaking with a member of the Advisor team. There could be an easier solution for you to achieve a Dolby Atmos capable home theater system. You may chat with us online or by phone at 1-800-324-9695. We will be happy to help.

Q
Can these speakers be mounted on the wall? If yes, wall mount suggestions?
jason  Jan 04, 2019
5 answers
A
Yes they are designed and intended especially to be mounted because of how thin they are, so they will look flush and even with a hi-def thin television on your wall. They're lightweight for speakers, so there's no complicated wall mounting necessary. Just use the parts in the packet and stick a screw in the wall, and you're all set!
william  Jan 04, 2019
A
Yes, these are designed to either be wall mounted (with included hardware) or they include a nice glass stand.
robert  Jan 04, 2019
A
Yes, just use #10 wood screws into a wall stud, very easy
christopher  Jan 04, 2019
A
Yes they can be mounted on the wall. They do not come with the screws or mounting hardware. But all you need is two screws per speaker. It's quite easy. They mount flat to the wall.
conway  Jan 04, 2019
A
Yes these can be easily wall mounted. You don't need a mount they just hang on screws or nails. I have them mounted on screws on studs..
avineesh  Jan 04, 2019
Q
I have the Klipsch RP-250 5.1 system. Can I use the RP-140D or RP-240D to create a 7.1 system or for ceiling speakers in a 9.1 system?
philippe  Apr 26, 2018

A
To be honest, not technically knowledgeable enough to answer your question. The only thing i can say is anything Klipsch is a sure bet.
john  Apr 27, 2018
A
You should be able to use them to extend to 7.1 but i dont think these will be the best choice for ceiling speakers.
