Home THX is the unique collaboration between Lucasfilm Ltd. and audio equipment manufacturers. THX Ultra2 certification provides a rigorous set of performance standards, along with proprietary surround sound post-processing technologies, designed to enhance the surround sound playback experience in the home theater.
ASA (Advanced Speaker Array): ASA is a proprietary THX technology that processes the surround and surround back signals to provide the optimal surround experience. ASA is used in THX Ultra2 Cinema, THX Music Mode, and THX Games Mode.
THX Ultra2 Cinema Mode: The AVR-4806 is equipped with THX Ultra2 Cinema mode that plays 5.1 channel movies using all 8 speakers (7.1). The THX processing blends the surround and surround back speakers providing the optimal mix of ambient and directional surround sounds. DTS-ES and Dolby Digital EX 6.1 channel soundtracks are automatically detected and processed appropriately.
THX Music Mode: THX Music mode can be used for playing 5.1 multi-channel music sources. In this mode THX processing is applied to the surround channels to provide a wide and stable rear soundstage.
THX Games Mode: Two channel stereo and multi channel, analog and digital signals are compatible with THX Games Mode. ASA is used to accurately place all game audio information, providing a full 360° playback environment. THX Games Mode is unique as it gives you a smooth transition of audio in all points of the surround field.
Dolby Digital EX: Dolby Digital EX soundtracks have an additional surround channel signal matrix encoded into the standard surround channel signals of a Dolby Digital soundtrack. When a Dolby Digital EX soundtrack is decoded you will hear more detailed imaging behind you; this feature brings more depth, spacious ambience and sound localization to the home theater experience than ever before. Although Dolby Digital EX decoding produces the best results with soundtracks that have been recorded with Dolby Digital EX processing, the Dolby Digital EX decoding feature can be used, with varying results, with all 5.1 channel Dolby Digital, DTS or MPEG soundtracks.
THX Surround EX: With the AVR-4806 Dolby Digital EX soundtracks further undergo Home THX Cinema processing to achieve a THX Surround EX system. This mode gives you more detailed imaging behind you, allowing for 360-degree surround sound effects.
Dolby Digital: Dolby Digital is the discrete multi-channel digital surround format developed by Dolby Laboratories consisting of 5.1 channels, front left, front right, center, surround left, surround right, and LFE (Low Frequency Effects or subwoofer, referred to as the .1 channel). Unlike the analog Dolby Pro Logic format, Dolby Digital's channels can contain full range sound information. Each channel is distinct from the others, allowing pinpoint imaging. Dolby Digital also offers tremendous dynamic range from the most powerful sound effects to the quietest passages, free from noise and distortion.
Dolby Pro Logic II: Pro Logic II is a Dolby Laboratories technology that produces surround sound from any stereo source, including CDs, VHS tapes, and TV programs. Like Dolby Digital, Dolby Pro Logic II has stereo surround output, giving you a more realistic surround sound experience. Another benefit of Pro Logic II over the original Pro Logic is better frequency response from the rear channels (full band width compared to Pro Logic's 7 kHz limitation). Unlike Dolby Digital, Dolby Pro Logic II allows you to enjoy a "5.1-like" (not discrete) presentation using any analog stereo source. Pro Logic II includes a Cinema mode, a Music mode, a Game mode (2-channel sources only), and Pro Logic mode; the Pro Logic mode decodes audio in the same manner as original Pro Logic.
Dolby Pro Logic IIx: Dolby Pro Logic IIx furthers the matrix decoding of Dolby Pro Logic II to decode audio signals recorded on two channels into up to 7.1 playback channels, including the surround back channels. Dolby Pro Logic IIx also allows 5.1-channel sources to be played in up to 7.1 channels. The mode can be selected according to the source. There are 3 Dolby Pro Logic IIx modes: Music, Cinema and Game.
Dolby Headphone: This receiver includes the new Dolby Headphone signal processing mode. Extended headphone listening can cause fatigue, because all of the sound resonates inside the head. Dolby Headphone replicates speaker playback in a room and places the sound at the front or the sides, outside the head, to achieve sound resembling movie or home theaters. The Dolby Headphone mode is effective for both stereo and multi-channel audio sources. There are three levels of effect: DH1--Reference room (small room with weak reverberations), DH2--Live room (slightly ber reverberations than DH1), and DH3--Large room (offering a sense of distance and sound diffusion effects). In addition to Dolby Headphone playback, the AVR-4806 can also output signals encoded in the Dolby Headphone mode from the recording output terminal to allow recording to another digital or analog recording device.DTS-ES Extended Surround: This format greatly improves the 360° surround impression and space expression thanks to further expanded surround signals. This format has been used professionally in movie theaters since 1999. DTS-ES includes the Surround Back (SB) channel in addition to the existing 5.1 surround channels of front left, front right, center, surround left, surround right, and LFE, enabling surround playback from a total of 6.1 channels. Due to differences in surround signal recording methods, DTS-ES offers two formats:
- DTS-ES Discrete 6.1: Discrete 6.1 utilizes the digital discrete method to record all 6.1 channels independently. Since the surround left, surround right, and surround back channels are fully independent, sound can be freely designed and sound images can move freely and rapidly amongst each other within a background sound that envelopes the room from all sides
- DTS-ES Matrix 6.1: In the Matrix 6.1 format, the surround back channel is matrix encoded in advance to the surround left and surround right channels, and when a matrix decoder plays them back, they are decoded into separate surround left, surround right, and surround back channels
DTS Neo:6 Surround: Featuring the newest DTS matrix processing technology, the DTS Neo:6 function provides up to 6.1-channel surround sound from conventional stereo sources, and can be used with virtually any 2-channel stereo source, analog or digital. Two modes are provided:
- Neo:6 Cinema: Optimized for surround encoded stereo movie soundtracks
- Neo:6 Music: Optimized for superior surround sound with stereo music sources
DTS 96/24: The AVR-4806 is compatible with sources recorded in DTS 96/24, a new multi-channel digital format. This new format can reproduce high-resolution, 5.1-channel audio on DTS-capable DVD players (those with DTS digital output), without the need for special players such as DVD-Audio or SACD. Some DVD-Audio discs will have a DTS 96/24 mix for compatibility with DVD-Video players.
Surround Modes: In addition to those listed above, you can choose from the following modes:
- Wide Screen: Achieve an atmosphere like that of a movie theater with a large screen, all signal sources are played in the 7.1-channel mode including Dolby Pro Logic and Dolby Digital 5.1-channel sources, effects simulating the multi-surround speakers of movie theaters are added to the surround channels
- Super Stadium: For watching sports programs to achieve a sound as if you were in the stadium, provides the longest reverberation signals
- Rock Arena: Gives the feeling of a live concert in an arena with reflected sounds coming from all directions
- Jazz Club: Creates the sound field of a live house with a low ceiling and hard walls, gives jazz a very vivid realism

- Mono Movie: Select this when watching monaural movies for a greater sense of expansion

Surround Parameters: You can adjust the following surround mode parameters:
DDSC-Digital (Dynamic Discrete Surround Circuit): DDSC-Digital is a circuit configuration specially designed by Denon in which all the elements of the surround processor are optimized by the use of selected high performance discrete elements, including separate A/D and D/A conversion, with sophisticated dual DSP surround decoding.
192kHz/24-bit Analog-to-Digital Conversion: The AVR-4806 has 192kHz/24-bit Burr-Brown A/D converters on each analog input, thus making it capable of performing DSP processing on any input. This significantly improves signal-to-noise ratio and dynamic range and enables you to control bass management and delay processing of any input, including DVD-Audio and SACD.
192kHz/24-bit Digital-to-Analog Conversion: Two Burr Brown high resolution 192kHz/24-bit DACs are included for each channel, giving the AVR-4806 a total of 16. The 192kHz sampling and 24-bit word length capabilities of the DACs allows you to play high-resolution recordings and hear the increased clarity, detail, and dynamic range of those recordings.
AL24 Processing: The AVR-4806 includes Denon's renowned 24-bit AL24 processing technology that reproduces digital signals in a waveform with the smoothness of analog signals. This technology thoroughly suppresses annoying quantization distortion and faithfully reproduces the delicate musical details of low-level signals. This version of AL24 processing supports 192 kHz sampling frequency and 5.1 channel signals.
Video Digital to Analog Converter: Denon uses high speed 216MHz/12-bit video DACs to achieve greater fidelity in composite, S-Video, and component video signals, both standard and high definition. Additionally noise shaped video (NSV) technology improves video S/N for greater signal linearity.
Time Base Corrector (TBC): The AVR-4806 uses a TBC in converting composite and S-Video signals to component video to suppress jitter in the video signal during playback.
Amplifier Assign: There are seven amplifier channels built into the receiver. These channels are typically used for 7.1 channel surround in the main room, but the amplifier assign function gives you the option of configuring the system differently if you prefer (see the descriptions of bi-amp, dual surround, and multi-zone).
Bi-Amp: Four of the seven amplifier channels can be used to bi-amp the front speakers, leaving three to power other channels.
Dual Surround Speaker Mode: The AVR-4806 provides outputs for two different sets of surround speakers, allowing you the flexibility to choose the speaker design and placement to optimize both movie soundtracks and music with no compromise. Use the amplifier assign function to select which set of speakers is powered for a given input.
On-Screen Display (OSD): An OSD can be displayed on your television for easy system setup. The OSD is sent through all monitor outputs (composite video, S-video, component video, and HDMI)
7.1 Multi-Channel Input: The AVR-4806 is equipped with a 7.1-channel input to accommodate present and future multi-channel formats, such as DVD-Audio and SACD.
RS-232C Port: The AVR-4806 includes an RS-232C port for connection to external whole-house control systems from companies such as AMX, Crestron, and others. The port also provides a software/firmware upgrade pathway.
Ethernet: Like the RS-232 port, the Ethernet connection is used for external controllers and possible upgrades.
IEEE 1394: The back panel has two IEEE 1394 ports. IEEE 1394, also known as "i.Link", is a high speed digital interface that may be used for plug and play connection of compatible digital components. Once connected, each i.Link port is assigned to an input.
HDCD (High Definition Compatible Digital) Playback: HDCD is an encoding/decoding technology that greatly reduces the distortion that occurs during digital recording while maintaining compatibility with the conventional CD format, thus expanding the dynamic range and achieving higher resolution. HDCD encoded CDs are identified automatically to select the optimum digital processing.
RDS (Radio Data System) Tuner: RDS is a broadcasting service which allows FM radio stations to send additional information along with the regular audio signal.
Personal Memory Plus: The Personal Memory Plus function automatically memorizes the surround modes and input modes selected for the different input sources. When an input source is selected, the modes stored in memory for that source are automatically recalled.
Pure Direct Mode: In addition to surround sound playback, the AVR-4806 lets you enjoy pure 2-channel stereo sound through its Pure Direct mode. In Pure Direct mode, power to the video circuitry, the front panel display, and any other unnecessary circuitry is turned off so all available effort if spent reproducing 2-channel audio. Four DACs are used to maximize sound quality.
Manual Bass Management and Speaker Setup: Various settings are available to ensure that small speakers do not receive full-range signals and to tell the receiver where to send signals.
- Front Speakers: The front speaker size may be set to Large (full range) or Small (high pass crossover engaged, the crossover point is individually adjustable for each set of channels and has the same setting options as the subwoofer crossover)
- Center Speaker: If you selected Large as the front speaker size, the center speaker may be set to Large, Small or None, if you selected Small as the front speaker size, the center speaker may be set to Small or None
- Subwoofer: Select Yes or No
- Surround Speakers A: If you selected Large as the front speaker size, the surround speakers A may be set to Large, Small or None, if you selected Small as the front speaker size, the surround speakers A may be set to Small or None. Note: If you have selected None as the surround speakers A size, the surround speakers B and surround back speakers are automatically set to None
- Surround Speakers B: If you selected Large as the front speaker size, the surround speakers B may be set to Large, Small or None, if you selected Small as the front speaker size, the surround speakers B may be set to Small or None
- Surround Back Speakers: If you selected Large as the size for the front speakers and either the surround speakers A or surround speakers B, the surround back speakers may be set to Large, Small or None. If you have selected Small as the front speaker size or if both the surround A and surround B are set to small, the surround back speakers may be set to Small or None. Once the surround back speaker size is set, you may set the number of surround back speakers, 1 or 2
- Subwoofer Crossover Frequency: The frequency of the low pass filter on the subwoofer output can be set to a fixed (80Hz THX setting) or variable output according to the speaker's bass playback ability (selectable between 40, 60, 80, 90, 100, 110, 120, 150, 200, and 250 Hz). In addition to these settings, if you are using a THX Ultra2 certified subwoofer, you can use the Boundary Gain Compensation. The Boundary Gain Compensation allows the subwoofer to receive very low frequencies (20-55Hz). If the bass seems too b, the compensation can be set to on to cut the lower frequencies
- Delay Time: The delay time (as a function of distance from speaker to listening position) for each channel can be adjusted from 0 to 60 feet in 0.1 or 1 foot increments
- Test Tone: The volume level of each channel is adjusted independently using the test tone
Audyssey: The AVR-4806's Audyssey MultiEQ XT function is designed to optimize the sound quality at each listening position in the room. The included DM-S305 microphone is used to measure test tones at each listening position, this measured data is then analyzed using a program to improve acoustic characteristics in the listening area. For best results at least six positions should be measured, one of which is the main position which is given more weight in the calculations. Like the manual speaker setup, Audyssey adjusts each channel's crossover frequency, delay time, and output level. Added features of Audyssey include the ability to equalize each channel to correct for room acoustics, measure the room's ambient noise level, and check speaker polarity.
Manual Equalizer: An EQ curve can be manually set for each channel (front left, front right, etc/surround back is adjusted as a single channel). The adjustment range runs from +6 to -20 dB in 0.5 dB steps at nine frequencies, 63 Hz, 125 Hz, 250 Hz, 500 Hz, 1 kHz, 2 kHz, 4 kHz, 8kHz, and 16 kHz.
Re-Equalization: The tonal balance of a film soundtrack tends to be excessively bright and harsh when played back over audio equipment in the home because film soundtracks are designed to be played back in large movie theaters using very different professional equipment. Re-Equalization restores the correct tonal balance for watching a movie soundtrack in a typical home environment.
Timbre Matching: The human ear changes our perception of a sound depending on the direction from which the sound is coming. In a movie theater, there is an array of surround speakers so that the surround information is all around you. In a home theater only two or four surround speakers are used. The Timbre Matching feature filters the information going to the surround speakers so that they more closely match the tonal characteristics of the sound coming from the front speakers. This ensures seamless panning between the front and surround speakers.
Adaptive Decorrelation: In a movie theater, a large number of surround speakers help create an enveloping surround sound experience, while in a home theater there are usually only two or four surround speakers. This can make the surround speakers sound like headphones that lack spaciousness. The surround sounds will also collapse into the closest speaker as you move away from the middle seating position. Adaptive Decorrelation slightly changes one surround channel's time and phase relationship with respect to the others. This expands the listening position and creates the same spacious surround experience as in a movie theater.
CINEMA EQ (Cinema Equalizer): The Cinema EQ function gently decreases the level of the extreme high frequencies, compensating for overly-bright sounding motion picture soundtracks. Select this function if the sound from the front speakers is too bright. This function only works in the Dolby Pro Logic (including PL II and PL IIx), Dolby Digital, DTS Surround, DTS Neo:6, and Wide Screen modes.
D.COMP (Dynamic Range Compression): Motion picture soundtracks have tremendous dynamic range (the contrast between very soft and very loud sounds). For listening late at night, or whenever the maximum sound level is lower than usual, the Dynamic Range Compression allows you to hear all of the sounds in the soundtrack (but with reduced dynamic range). This only works when playing program sources recorded in Dolby Digital or DTS. You can select one of the four settings: "OFF", "LOW", "MID" (middle), or "HI" (high).
Dialogue Normalization: The dialogue normalization function is activated automatically when playing Dolby Digital program sources. Dialogue normalization is a basic function of Dolby Digital, which automatically normalizes the dialog level (standard level) of the signals that are recorded at different levels for different program sources, such as DVD, DTV and other future formats that will use Dolby Digital.
XM Ready: Using an optional XM Mini Tuner and Mini Tuner Home Dock, you can take advantage of the variety and sound quality of XM Satellite radio. XM offers over 150 channels of music, news, sports, and talk radio and even has weather and traffic information in several major markets. The channel number, channel name, artist name, and song title are listed on the AVR-4806's display and on the connected TV monitor. XM stations are stored as presets and recalled in the same way AM and FM stations are. A subscription to XM Satellite Radio is required.
Input Name: The name displayed on the receiver's front panel and on a connected TV monitor can be customized with a new name up to 8 characters.
Input Function Level: If the volume of one source is higher (or lower) than the others it can be adjusted to match. Each input has an input function level which is adjustable from -12dB to +12dB in 1dB increments.
Assignable Digital Inputs: The 5 optical and 3 coaxial digital inputs are assigned to individual input sources (Example: Optical 1 assigned to CD, Optical 2 assigned to DVD, etc). Optical inputs 2, 3, and 4 are equipped with an optical digital output jack that can be used for digital recording between a digital audio source and a digital audio recorder.
Audio Delay: The audio signal can be delayed, from 0-200ms, to match the video signal.
Component Video Switching: In addition to composite and S-Video switching, this unit can switch between component video sources. There are 3 component video inputs and 2 component video outputs; each input and output has gold-plated jacks labeled "Y", "Pb/Cb" and "Pr/Cr". This feature allows you to connect, and switch between, high resolution video sources equipped with component video outputs. High performance relays provide wideband component video bandwidth (>100 MHz), compatible with progressive DVD (480p), as well as HDTV formats (720p, 1080i). Both component video outputs are active simultaneously so 2 HDTVs can be fed a signal at the same time.
Video Conversion: The AVR-4806 is equipped with a flexible video switching system that converts video signals in an effort to only require one video connection from receiver to TV. Unlike most other conversion circuits, this receiver will convert analog signals from composite video, S-Video, and component video to HDMI.
- Composite video: Can be converted to S-Video, component video, or HDMI
- S-Video: Can be converted to Composite video, component video, or HDMI
- Component video: Can be converted to composite video, S-Video, or HDMI (480i signals only when down converting)
- Digital video in: The HDMI and DVI inputs are output only through the HDMI output
Denon Link 3rd Edition: The RJ-45 jack on the back panel allows the connection of a Denon DVD player (with Denon Link output) for ultra-clean digital transfer. The Denon Link interface enables the transfer of high-grade linear PCM 96kHz/24-bit 6-channel audio or 192kHz/24-bit 2-channel audio via a shielded twisted pair cable. (If the 192kHz/24-bit source is copyright protected, the DVD player may convert the digital output to a 48kHz/24-bit signal). Since Denon Link uses low-voltage differential signaling (LVDS), transfer capabilities of greater than 1.2 Gbps at a differential voltage of approximately 0.3 Vpp are possible. The signal transfer is balanced and voltage is lower than coaxial or unbalanced cables so Denon Link is far less susceptible to radiated noise, ensuring the highest level of signal transfer. In most cases Denon Link enables Denon components to transfer DVD-Audio signals digitally, the digital transfer of SACD signals is not yet possible. Note: Super Audio CDs have certain rules for digital signal transfer designed to protect copyrights. In order to receive permission for the transfer or the multi-channel digital signals of SACD, Denon has proposed to SACD licensors and content holders the Denon Link (3rd edition), and approval procedures are now underway (at the time the manual was printed).
Last Function Memory: This unit is equipped with a last function memory, which stores the input and output setting conditions as they were immediately before the power was switched off.
Back-Up Memory: The unit is also equipped with a back-up memory. This function provides approximately one week of memory storage when the main unit's power switch is off and with the power cord disconnected.
Multi-brand/Learning Remote: The RC-995 has controls for an entire home theater system on two backlit LCD touch screens. You can navigate and make selections by touching the screens directly. When a component is selected (receiver, DVD Player, etc) the keys on the LCD panels change and are specific to that component. In addition to being pre-programmed to control many brands of audio/video source components and TVs, this remote also has learning capability, allowing it to be customized for any installation.
Motion Sensitive: The remote is motion sensitive and illuminates when it's picked up.
Hard Keys: Hard keys have been provided on the main unit for frequently-used operations, such as volume, channel selection, cursor and select, and power.
System Call: Up to 6 System Call settings (macro) with up to 12 sequentially-issued commands can be stored. The System Call programs you have stored can be easily be checked on the LCD panel.
Back lighting: To conserve battery power, the back light automatically turns off after a certain period of time. This time is set to 5, 10, 15, or 20 seconds. The back light brightness is adjustable to three different levels.

- DVI input: The HDCP compatible DVI input can be assigned to any of the eight video inputs. DVI video signals are passed to the HDMI monitor output, while digital audio signals are not passed to the HDMI monitor output. When using this connection, a separate digital or analog audio connection should also be made.
