Our take on the Metra ethereal HDM-GA1 HDMI Accelerator by Crutchfield's Steve Kindig
Get your HDMI connection up to speed
When upgrading from HD to 4K Ultra HD, your HDMI cables can be a bottleneck — especially longer runs. It's an issue when connecting an external 4K video source like an Ultra HD Blu-ray player to a 4K TV or projector — the connection must be able to support incredibly high data speeds. The HDM-GA1 HDMI Accelerator can boost the signal capacity of HDMI cables up to 15 meters long. It's a brilliant solution for difficult-to-replace cables, like those installed in a wall or ceiling.
Simple plug-and-play hookup
The latest HDMI 2.0 spec supports data speeds of up to 18 Gbps (gigabits per second), but many HDMI cables sold in recent years have a much lower top speed of 10.2 Gbps. That's just not enough to keep up with 4K sources with 60Hz frame rate, 10-bit color, and other data-intensive features.
When you attach the HDM-GA1 at the display end of your setup, its active circuitry boosts signal speed to the max of 18 Gbps. It's designed to work with passive (non-powered) HDMI cables that use 24-gauge wire, at lengths up to 15 meters. The HDM-GA1 is physically compact and plug-and-play easy to install. It draws its power from a USB port on your display.
Here's how you hook it up:
- connect the input connector of the HDM-GA1 to the display end of your passive HDMI cable
- connect the output connector of the HDM-GA1 to the input of your TV or projector using a passive HDMI cable of 2 meters or less
- to power the HDM-GA1, connect the supplied USB cable between the HDM-GA1 and an available USB port on your TV or projector
- boosts data speed of passive HDMI cables to 18 Gbps
- supports 4K/60Hz video, 10-bit color, wide color gamut, HDR and other data-intensive features
- works with HDMI cables that use 24-gauge wire, up to 15 meters long
- active circuitry, powered by USB
- installs on the display end of your HDMI cable
- 13/16"W x 3/8"H x 2-1/16"D

HDMI Gigabit Accelerator: The HDMI Gigabit Accelerator (HDM-GA1) boosts the speed of your existing passive HDMI cable to 18 Gbps. The HDM-GA1 is designed to be used with passive 24 gauge HDMI cables at a distance of up to 15 meters (49.2') and is intended to be installed at the display side of the system.
HDMI 2.0 Specifications: In addition to supporting speeds up to 18 Gbps, the HDM-GA1 offers support for the latest HDMI 2.0 specifications like 4K/60Hz video, HDCP 2.2, HDR (High Dynamic Range) video, and 4:4:4: color subsampling rate.
HDMI Input/Output: Connect the female HDMI input terminal (labeled "Display") of the HDM-GA1 to the display side of the passive HDMI cable. Connect the female HDMI output terminal (labeled "Source") of the HDM-GA1 to the input of the display with a passive HDMI cable 2 meters (6.6') or less in length.
USB Power Cable: Connect the supplied 3' microUSB-to-USB cable between the HDM-GA1's female microUSB port labeled "Power" and an available female USB (type-A) port on your TV. This will supply power (5V/500ma) to the HDM-GA1.
