Our take on the Samsung LN-S2651D by Crutchfield's Steve Kindig
Samsung's LN-S2651D gives you a crystal-clear picture with today's and tomorrow's digital TV broadcasts. This future-ready flat panel sports a built-in HD tuner and a generous array of inputs that let you hook up your current video sources, as well as up and coming high-definition Blu-ray and HD DVD players. It's "fun-ready," too Samsung's Game Mode enhances the look and sound of your video games. This compact, versatile TV makes a great choice for a bedroom or a kids' playroom.
The year to year improvements we're seeing in LCD picture quality are impressive. The LN-S2651D's screen features a fast "pixel response" time (the time it takes for each pixel to go from fully on to fully off), which virtually eliminates the smearing effect of motion lag that's visible on run-of-the-mill LCD screens. And if you're tired of seeing "LCD black" that's really more of a dark gray, you'll love this set's deep, dark blacks. The contrast ratio is outstanding for an LCD TV.
The back-panel "jack pack" includes several inputs for high-resolution sources, including HD-compatible component video. For future-readiness, there's not one but two HDMI inputs for use with the growing number of HD satellite receivers and "upconverting" DVD players that use this digital connection. The LN-S2651D is a dual-mode display, so you can connect your computer, too. Use the Picture-in-Picture feature to simultaneously surf channels and surf the Web.

Features and Specs
HDTV (ATSC) Tuner: The LN-S2651D has a built-in over-the-air HDTV (ATSC) tuner, so you don't have to purchase a separate digital set-top box to receive and decode over-the-air HDTV/SDTV signals.
Display Resolution: The display has a resolution of 1366 x 768. The unit will accept 1080i, 720p, 480i and 480p signals, and has a built-in image "scaler" to handle a variety of digital and analog audio/video sources. The "scaler" converts the signals from all video sources to match the LCD panel's native 768p resolution.
High Contrast Ratio: The contrast ratio of this TV is 4000:1, which gives you brilliant brightness and contrast for superior picture and detail from both PC and TV images.
Digital Natural Image Engine (DNIe): Samsung's exclusive Digital Natural Image engine dramatically improves the picture by enhancing the contrast, detail, white balance and reduces noise.
10-bit Processing: Samsung's 10-bit processing method produces 12.8 billion lifelike colors to ensure a more natural and vivid picture and aids in video signal processing of analog sources.
Automatic Picture Settings: You can choose one of the following picture settings, each input stores its own setting:
- Standard: Resets the standard factory settings
- Dynamic: For viewing the TV during the day, or when there is bright light in the room
- Movie: For viewing the TV in low light
- Custom: Allows you to adjust and store the following settings: contrast, brightness, sharpness, color, tint, and color tone
Enhanced Game Mode: The Game mode enhances dark areas, sharpens the picture, speeds up the image processing response, and enhances the sounds of your games.
Picture Sizes: You can choose one of the following picture sizes:
16:9: Sets the picture to 16:9 wide mode
Zoom 1: Magnifies the size of the picture and allows you to move the enlarged picture using the arrows on the remote
Zoom 2: Magnifies the size of the picture more than Zoom 1 and allows you to move the enlarged picture using the arrows on the remote
4:3: Sets the picture to 4:3 normal mode, with black bars on both sides
Input Source Names: You can assign a name for the component connected to each of the inputs. When input naming is completed, you will no longer have to remember which component is connected to each input when selecting a source to watch.
Channel Labels: Each analog channel programmed into memory can be labeled with a name up to 5 characters. Digital channels names are already assigned and cannot be edited.
Favorite Channel: You can create a list of your favorite channels and recall the list using the FAV.CH button on the remote.
PC-Capable: This unit has a 15-pin D-Sub (RGB) input that allows you to use it as a high-resolution computer monitor. The TV can be set to automatically adjust to the video signals received, or you can use the setup menu to adjust the screen quality and position. No cables are supplied for connecting the TV to a PC.
Picture-In-Picture (PIP): The Picture-In-Picture feature allows you to watch two video sources (TV, VCR, DVD) simultaneously. The TV has only one tuner, so you cannot watch two TV channels at the same time. There are three PIP views: Double (side-by-side split screens and each screen has a 4:3 aspect ratio), Double Wide (side-by-side split screens and each screen has a 16:9 aspect ratio), or standard picture-in-picture (a small window inside the full screen). In the standard picture-in-picture mode, the inset PIP window can be moved to any of the screen's four corners. PIP will not work when the V-chip is in use.
Picture Freeze: This feature allows you to freeze an image on the screen. This feature can only be activated from the remote control. When you freeze the picture the audio continues normally.
Digital Signal Strength Meter: The digital signal strength meter can be used to help you find the antenna position that delivers the highest HDTV digital signal strength.
Analog Channel Fine Tuning: The fine tuning feature allows you to manually adjust analog channels for optimal reception. A separate fine tuning setting may be put into the TV's memory for each analog channel.
Low Noise Amplifier (LNA): When the TV's antenna setting is on "Air," instead of "Cable," sometimes reception can be improved by boosting the incoming signal using the LNA function. A separate LNA setting may be put into the TV's memory for each channel.
Auto Volume: Auto volume automatically adjusts the volume of the desired channel, lowering the sound output when the modulation signal is high or raising the sound output when the modulation signal is low. This reduces the difference in volume when changing channels.
Digital Noise Reduction: If the broadcast signal received by your TV is weak, you can activate the Digital Noise Reduction feature to help reduce any static and ghosting that may appear on the screen.
Automatic Sound Settings: You can choose from the following sound settings:
Standard: Resets the standard factory settings
Music: For watching music videos and concerts
Movie: For watching movies
Speech: For watching a show that is mostly dialogue
Custom: Allows you to adjust the 5-band EQ, which includes the following frequencies: 100 Hz, 300 Hz, 1 kHz, 3 kHz, and 10 kHz
SRS TruSurround XT: TruSurround is a patented SRS technology that solves the problem of playing 5.1 multi-channel content using only two speakers. TruSurround delivers a compelling, virtual surround sound experience through the two speaker internal playback system. It is fully compatible with all multi-channel formats.
Function Help: With the function help feature turned on, each time you highlight a function in the menu, a brief description of the function is also displayed.
Sleep Timer: The sleep timer switches the television off after a specified amount of time. The sleep timer can be set to 30, 60, 90, 120, 150, or 180 minutes.
On/Off Timer: The On/Off timer allows you to program the television to turn itself on and off by selecting a specific on time and a specific off time. You also choose the On Timer's channel and Volume. The on and off timers work independently of one another.
On/Off Melody: A unique melody plays when the TV is turned on and off. You can turn this feature off if you prefer.
iPod Compatible: With an optional iPod cable box, you can connect your iPod to the LN-S2651D. Once the iPod is connected, you can control the iPod using the TV remote control and onscreen menu. The controls on the iPod are disabled.
Detachable Stand: The LN-S2651D comes with a table-top stand for easy placement on top of a counter or table. On the stand, the TV cannot be tilted or swiveled.
Wall Mounting Option: For wall mounting, an optional wall-mount bracket is available from the manufacturer.
VESA Mounting Bracket Standard: The TV also has 4 mounting holes on the back for an aftermarket wall-mount bracket. The spacing of the mounting holes is VESA 200mm (w) x 100mm (h), in accordance with the industry standards set by the Video Electronics Standards Association. The mounting holes accommodate M4 screws.
Kensington Lock: When mounting the monitor in a public place, you can secure it with an optional anti-theft device called a Kensington Lock. This TV has a slot on the rear panel to accommodate a Kensington Lock device.
Multibrand Remote: The supplied remote is pre-programmed to operate this unit and a number of functions on other brands of components, including VCRs, cable boxes, DVD players, and set top boxes.
HDMI/DVI Inputs: This TV has left and right RCA audio jacks and two HDMI terminals. The HDMI jacks can accommodate a copy-protected digital connection (HDCP) to other devices that have compatible interfaces. The HDMI jacks are compliant with the EIA/CEA-861/861B standard and is not intended for use with personal computers. If you want to connect a DVI-compatible device, you will need an HDMI-to-DVI adapter cable. Since DVI does not carry audio signals, the stereo audio input is provided for the HDMI input. In addition to the HDMI-to-DVI adapter cable, you will also need stereo audio cables.
Note: The HDMI jack will accept 1080i, 720p, 480p, and 480i signals.
PC: This input consists of a stereo mini-jack and an analog RGB (D-Sub 15-pin) jack. This jack allows you to connect a personal computer with a D-Sub 15-pin output. When using the RGB (D-Sub 15-pin) jack, you must use the PC Audio input for your audio connection.
Component Video Input: The component video input will accept 1080i, 720p, 480p and 480i signals.
Headphone: There is a 3.5mm headphone mini-jack on the rear panel.
Digital Audio: The optical digital output (with plastic cover) on the rear panel will output Dolby Digital (when available) or 2 channel PCM.
MP3 Link: Minijack for connecting the optional iPod cable box.
Service 1: The rear panel of the TV has a Service port for repair and software upgrades only.
