Polk Audio 255c-LS
In-wall center channel speaker
Our take on the Polk Audio 255c-LS by Crutchfield's Marshall Chase
Answer to the center channel challenge
The center channel speaker is critical in any home theater system, yet it can be the hardest to place. Do you put it below the TV, or get a shelf for it, or what? The in-wall Polk 255c-LS is a great solution.
Big sound, no footprint
This in-wall center channel speaker is built to perform. Potent 5-1/4" woofers work with Polk's PowerPort® bass venting technology to deliver punchy lows. A 1" ring-radiator tweeter extends high-frequency response for incredible details and realistic imaging. You'll hear every breath of dialogue and every note of music. All of this from a center channel speaker that's out of sight, in more ways than one.
A wall distance toggle switch lets you compensate for boominess due to installation near a side wall. You also get a tweeter attenuation switch to help you get balanced sound in rooms with lots of reflective surfaces.
Bring the family
The Polk 255c-LS is timbre-matched to Polk's free-standing LSi M speakers. It can mingle with matching towers or bookshelves. Or it can join in harmony with other members of the "Vanishing" LS speaker family.
An optional in-wall bracket is recommended for installing the 255c-LS in-wall center channel speaker in a home with new construction.

I've had both the Bose 191 and the Klipsch center speaker. In personally feel this speaker sounds better than both of those, and the bass is surprising good for an open air speaker.

Vanishing Series In-Wall Speakers: The Polk Audio Vanishing Series in-wall loudspeakers feature a precision-engineered, minimally flanged design and Polk's exclusive Sheer-Grille, which protrudes only 7mm from its surroundings. Installing virtually flush in your wall, the Polk Audio Vanishing Series in-wall loudspeakers offer a one-cut, drop-in installation and rotating cam stabilizing system. The Vanishing LS series in-wall speakers are timbre-matched to Polk Audio's flagship LSi and LSiM series loudspeakers for seamless blending from speaker to speaker when you're building a speaker system.
Dual Midranges: This Polk Audio Vanishing Series 255c-LS in-wall center-channel loudspeaker employs two 5-1/4" Dynamic Balance aerated polypropylene cone midrange drivers with rubber surrounds for a smooth, consistent frequency response. The aerated polypropylene cones are 20% lighter than conventional polypropylene, and 35% lighter than aluminum, to give you clear midrange, punchy bass, and high efficiency. Polk Audio's patented Dynamic Balance technology eliminates unwanted resonances.
Ring Radiator Tweeter: The 255c-LS employs a 1" Dynamic Balance ring radiator tweeter for detailed highs and superb imaging. This high-performance tweeter features a 15° swivel housing, for more direct high frequency control, excellent off-axis imaging and more placement flexibility.
Reflective Room Compensation Control: The Reflective Room Compensation Switch, conveniently located on the front panel, allows you to digitally compensate for harsh reflective surfaces, such as smooth walls, glass windows, and hardwood floors. The filter doesn't merely reduce high frequencies, it simply cuts the level only in the 4-5kHz range where room acoustics most often interfere with performance. The switch is labeled "Tweeter" with two positions: out (normal) and in (filter).
Frequency Response: The overall frequency response of the in-wall center-channel loudspeaker is 30Hz to 33kHz, and the -3dB frequency response is 44 to 29kHz.
Sheer-Grille: The 255c-LS features Polk Audio's exclusive wafer-thin Sheer-Grille, a magnetically-secured metal grille that protrudes only 7mm from its surroundings. The Sheer-Grille can be painted to match your décor, making it virtually indistinguishable from its surroundings. The Sheer-Grille has nearly transparent, ultra-small perforations, and is acoustically inert, for dynamic, unimpeded sound and more uniform coverage, even in larger rooms. The grille's dimensions are 14-3/4" x 9-1/4".
Gold-Plated Spring-Loaded Posts: The in-wall center-channel loudspeaker has a gold-plated pair of spring-loaded binding posts that can accept up to 12-gauge wire, single- or dual-banana plugs, or pin connectors.
Applications: You can use the Polk Audio Vanishing Series 255c-LS in-wall center-channel loudspeaker to complete a system of traditional loudspeakers or in-wall speakers, by adding an inconspicuous center-channel speaker.
Note: The speaker isn't recommended for installation in high-moisture locations.
Placement: The in-wall center-channel speaker is designed to be installed above or below your flat-panel television. It should be installed as close to ear level as possible. If the speaker needs to be installed lower or higher than ear level, you should aim the tweeter accordingly.
Note: Do not block the in-wall center-channel speaker with your TV or furniture, as this will disrupt and muffle the sound.
Rotating Cam System: The Polk Audio in-wall center-channel loudspeaker utilizes a rotating cam system to ensure a secure, vibration-free installation. The 255c-LS has 6 rotating cams to hold the speaker in place. The cams can be tightened from the front panel with a Phillips-head screwdriver.
Installation: The 255c-LS can be installed in new or existing construction:
- Existing Construction: In existing walls, use the included cardboard template for one-cut, drop-in simplicity. Achieve secure, vibration-free efficiency with a simple turn of Polk's Rotating Cam system (6 rotating cams).
- New Construction: The optional PB LCic pre-construction brackets should be used for new-build or open-wall retro-fitting.

2 answers I have installed a set of Polk 265LS for right and left channel and a single Polk 255C-LS. They are installed in a built-in wall unit. I'm happy with the sound clarity but the speakers are really lacking any amount of bass or warmness. I have a 12" subwoofer in the rear of the room which helps for the dynamic sounds in movies but general dialogue is really lacking good sound. Can you recommend something to help improve the sound? Should I have insulation filled into the cabinet to simulate an in-wall setup? Thanks for your help. [ DC1971 Oct 16, 2015 ]
I have the same setup, but I built a small box for my center, and the 265's are very "bassy". My entertainment center is built into the wall, with walk-in access on the backside of everything. I noticed that if built a box for the 265's, that the bass was reduced to almost nothing. So I left them as "free air", and they rock! So if you can increase the volume of air on the back side of your speakers, or perhaps port that space they are in, you should have a substantial increase in the bass. [ Darrel Oct 18, 2015 ]
Given that the instructions said some amount of insulation should be placed in the void, I think you should try doing so. I have the same speakers you have mounted in the wall and am pleased with them. You don't mention which receiver you have and that can make a big difference. [ David Oct 18, 2015 ]
