Polk Audio MC60
Our take on the Polk Audio MC60 by Crutchfield's Amanda P.
Experience rich, engaging sound from speakers that disappear into your room. Polk's MC60 speaker installs flush in your ceiling for a sleek, attractive look. The 3/4" tweeter lets you aim the high frequencies for the clearest sound in your room. The 6-1/2" woofer provides smooth bass and mid-bass. And this speaker's moisture-resistant design means you can enjoy it in your kitchen, bathroom, or even outdoors, installed under the eaves.
Building a system
Install a pair of the MC60s for stereo music listening. These speakers can also work as the fronts, center, and surrounds in a surround sound system. The MC60s are voice-matched with the other MC in-wall and in-ceiling speakers, so you can mix and match.
An optional in-ceiling bracket is recommended for installing the MC60 speaker in a home with new construction.

MC Series: The Polk Audio MC Series in-wall/in-ceiling loudspeakers offer great built-in sound for multi-room listening. The MC Series features Dynamic Balance driver technology, an aimable tweeter, and polymer cone woofers, which ensures your music always sounds crisp and clear. The MC Series also uses infinite baffle tuning for excellent bass response, so you can install them in virtually any kind of wall.
Dynamic Balance Technology: Laser imaging technology allows Polk Audio engineers to see the entire vibrating surface of a driver and tweeter; they can actually see the resonance develop on the speaker cones-resonance that is the root cause of loudspeaker distortion. Being able to see the resonance develop, they then determine the Dynamic Balance of high-tech materials, geometry and construction that together effectively tune out the offending resonance. Exclusive Dynamic Balance Composite Material Technology delivers sound that is effortlessly clean and clear, even at lifelike volume levels.
Woofer: The Polk Audio MC60 in-ceiling speaker features a 6-1/2" Dynamic Balance Polymer Composite Cone for smooth wide-range response with low distortion. The polymer composite cone provides excellent damping and bass response while resisting deterioration. For a smoother response and improved durability, each woofer uses a rubber surround.
Tweeter: The MC60 in-ceiling speaker uses a 3/4" aimable silk dome tweeter with neodymium magnet for clear, detailed highs and excellent imaging even for off-axis listening positions. Aiming the tweeter toward your listening position improves imaging and detail.
Infinite Baffle Tuning: Infinite Baffle Tuning uses the virtual enclosure of in-wall/in-ceiling space for superior bass response.
Moisture-resistant: Durable, moisture-resistant materials allow you to install the speakers in bathrooms, kitchens, even under the eaves of an enclosed porch. (The speaker is not recommended for exposed outdoor use.)
Timbre-matched: The MC Series speakers are timbre matched to Polk Audio's freestanding speakers, such as the Polk Monitor, TSi, and OWM series; just in case you need in-wall/in-ceiling surround speakers to match your freestanding fronts.
Installation: The round shape and flush-design allow the MC60 to mimic the look of a recessed lighting fixture. Each speaker requires a cutout diameter of 8.1875" and a depth of 3.9375" behind the drywall. Each speaker frame has a 9.1875" diameter. Once the holes are cut, each speaker is placed in the opening and the Rotating Cams are tightened, allowing you to secure each speaker to the drywall without any extra assembly. The cam extends 1.75" deep from the mounting surface of the speaker and will accommodate up to 1.5" drywall thickness. When the cams are rotated, each extends 0.875" beyond the 8.1875" cutout diameter. If you will not be mounting these speakers in drywall, make sure the wall or ceiling material can safely support the weight of the speakers before installation; each speaker weighs approximately 3.1 pounds.
Paintable: The grille and flange can be painted, allowing these speakers to match any decor.

I have a set of similar speakers installed in our tv/media room and they have performed very well for the past 5 years. In addition to trusting the quality and design of my current speakers, these are offered at a great price. I will be installing these in the ceiling in our kitchen as part of a major renovation. Good morning wireless speakers are not wireless at all they require 110ac power. Second your Bass should come from your Subwoofer. 3 sorround speakers are for sorround audio tracks they don't require to be so loud. [ RODOLFO A Nov 17, 2017 ]
1 answer I'm hoping to replace a couple of old Jensen desk-top speakers that I used in a kitchen with these. On the same set-up I have a second pair of larger speakers in the living room, so I use the "A-B" switch on my receiver and all is well. In making a change to something like this speaker, do I need to be aware of any technical issues? I know nothing about ohms, impedance, watts, etc. Do I need to know anything about that, or can I be confident that these would work ok? [ Tom Oct 09, 2017 ]
Thanks for your questions--regarding product compatibility inquiries like this, you would be better served contacting an Advisor directly by phone (888.955.6000) or online chat. They can go over what you have now in more detail to ensure it all works correctly with the Polk MC60 speakers. Hope that helps! [ Larry Oct 15, 2017 ] Staff
18 gauge speaker wire works just fine. Hope this helps. [ Gordon Nov 29, 2016 ]
Speakers alone don't determine the gauge. It depends on how many speakers and in what configuration are drawing from the line. Crutchfield's big advantage is qualified technical support. Instead of asking a question here, I'd call them and ask for tech support and explain your situation. In case you have one receiver driving 2 speakers in the vicinity (10-20 ft) you may be OK with a higher gauge (cheaper) off the shelf wire. [ sundeep Nov 29, 2016 ]
I installed these in the ceiling of my screened in porch about 15 months ago and they still look brand new. I needed moisture resistant speakers as my house backs onto the Chesapeake Bay in Virginia, where there is constant moisture in the air. I guess these would up very well in your environment. I've installed the speakers and had the same question. In the end I bought them because they made the installation easier. My guess is if you're handy and want to rough in a different mount you could make it work. Is it worth the time and effort is the question. [ ANDREW Dec 30, 2015 ]
The new construction mounts are optional in new construction...it eliminates the need to locate wires above drywall later. [ MARTIN S Dec 29, 2015 ]
I installed these into my existing ceiling with no need for additional mounts. There are 3 arms that spin out and press against the back of the ceiling when you tighten the screws. [ Robert Dec 29, 2015 ]
The mc 60 will also work great as a center speaker. I have a 5.1 and all five speakers are mc60 and sound great [ ALEX J Apr 09, 2015 ]
I used the mc60 for my front and rear. I had a nice definitive technology center speaker and use two sub woofers for the deep base [ JAMES Apr 09, 2015 ]
1 answer A couple of questions here. 1) What effect would there be to pairing this as a 5.1 center channel along with RC60i or RC80i's for Front/Rear? 2) what is a good sub to use along with these? Ideally I'd like something I can put in the wall as well (even if I have to do some work to make it happen). [ Aaron Mar 31, 2015 ]
For details on fit or installation please contact an Advisor by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat. They will be able to pull up your vehicle and give you the details on if this will fit and what you will need for an installation in your vehicle. [ Krissy Apr 05, 2015 ] Staff
If you cut your holes well you should be able to. [ DONALD L Jan 22, 2015 ]
Not sure of your specific usage, but you could certainly physically mount this speaker on drywall between the studs in a wall. I'm using these for home theater surrounds mounted in the ceiling, and I'm quite happy with them. The tweeters are somewhat aim-able (on one axis) so if mounting surrounds in the wall, just be sure to locate the speakers fairly high and point the tweeters down across the listening area. [ FilmSound Jan 21, 2015 ]
Absolutely. The general aesthetic notion is rectangles on a wall and circles on a ceiling. But it's up to you - purely aesthetic reasons. [ DAVID Jan 21, 2015 ]
Yes, as long as there is clearance behind and the wallboard can support 3 lbs. I would be concerned if the wallboard was 1/4 inch. [ RICHARD Jan 21, 2015 ]
Yes installing the speakers in the wall, would b just as easy as installing in the ceiling. It should not effect the sound quality of the speaker! Just make sure u put them in propper areas for best surround sound! [ DARRELL Jan 21, 2015 ]
Yes they can be installed in wall or ceiling. I have them installed both ways and had no problems. They look and sound great. [ STEVE Jan 21, 2015 ]
I can't imagine why not. As long as there s enough clearance in the wall to accommodate the speaker depth. I have them in my ceiling as part of a surround system. They are not my primary front speakers. The sound is excellent for this purpose. [ JAMES Jan 21, 2015 ]
7 answers Wanted to hear from people who own this product. I am on the fence over the MC60 vs the MC80. I hear a lot of differences of opinions and am not sure which way to go yet. My ceiling height is only 10' and is flat. The room is 15x15 with no back wall, open concept. I hear that MC80 will be clearer and fill up room more but I have 2 bookshelf Infinity speakers with 4-4.5" woofers that fill up the room pretty well. I will be using speakers for surround sound and music application and will have a subwoofer. Want to know how pleased you are with the speaker in general? [ Dave Dec 06, 2013 ]
I really can't compare the two speakers since I've only heard the MC60. I bought four to use for ceiling surrounds and they are working fine. The ceiling in my house is also about 10' high, but slanted, and I don't have any problem getting enough surround level. If you are using the speakers for full-range playback (not just surround), I would probably go with the MC80 because of the extended low frequency response. [ FilmSound Dec 09, 2013 ]
Thanks Bryan, do you ever use the MC80's for music or just for movies? How big of a space is the MC80's in if you don't mind me asking. I know it is an open concept but like I said my space is literally 15x15 with no back wall to an open concept of the rest of the house, also how high is your ceiling?. I have a son that sleeps 2 rooms over from the TV room and was curious if you thought the 80's produce lot of sound, worried about him sleeping. 1 last question since you have 80's and 60's do your 80's look whiter than your 60's? I had both sent to my house and the 80's look whiter than the 60's. Still undecided about which way to go but all answers are appreciated to help with my decision. [ Dave Dec 07, 2013 ]
Thanks Thomas for the response. My room is not as big as yours but with the open concept, no back wall I am wondering if the 60's will get lost as well. I have heard that the 80's will sound better than the 60's but have also heard that I don't need to go with the 80's. Do your MC60's look white or do they look like they have a slight tint to them? Thanks again. [ Dave Dec 07, 2013 ]
Jerry, Thanks for the response. I have a question about the color of your speakers though if you don't mind. Are they white or are they a little bit of an off white(slight tint to them). Just wondering because I have the MC80's and MC60's in my house at the moment because I am not sure which way to go and the 80's look very white compared to the 60's which look like a different hue. Thanks [ Dave Dec 07, 2013 ]
I bought the MC60 in Oct for a 7.2 surround. I don't have a back wall either. Long (40ft) open room. I am pleased with the sound and quality of his speaker. I use it for the same applications that you asked about. [ JERRY Dec 06, 2013 ]
I have the MC60's and feel they are a bit lost in the room. My room is 21' × 20' with no back wall. Overall, I'm pleased with the speakers, but wish I had gone with the MC80's. [ THOMAS Dec 06, 2013 ]
Dave, I recently finished my basement, open floor plan, and used 5 MC80s for my theater area, 2 front, 2 rear and center channel, all in the ceiling, they are amazing and would highly recommend for that use. I also have a polk sub in that space. I also have 4 MC60s in what I will call zone 2, 2 speakers in the bar area and 2 in my kids play area. The MC60s are fine for that use, but hard for me to rate for surround sound utilization. Both speakers allow for directional sound, which is nice, but I am very pleased with the MC80s in my theater area. Hope this helps. [ BRYAN C Dec 06, 2013 ]
