Our take on the JL Audio JX500/1D by Crutchfield's Buck Pomerantz
Lots of power from a very small box
JL Audio's JX500/1D mono amplifier will power your subwoofer with up to 500 watts RMS, so you can experience thunderous bass in your music. A variable low-pass filter and bass boost help you tune your sub to fit your system and sound its best. An optional remote level control lets you turn the sub up or down from the front seat.
Compact, but beefy
You know you're holding a serious piece of sound equipment when you feel the heft of this tiny JX amp. JL Audio built it with sturdy, high-grade parts that ensure excellent heat management, provide high current flow, and deliver stable performance in almost any situation. You won't find blinking lights or meters on the outside of these amps, but you will find oversized output transistors and rugged MOSFET power supplies inside. The high-mass aluminum heatsink keeps things cool enough to virtually eliminate thermal shut-downs.

High-Mass Heat Sink: A heavy extruded aluminum heat sink is designed to keep the JL Audio JX series amplifier in a comfortable thermal range during demanding operation. This high-mass, extruded heat sink removes heat from the amplifier circuitry, extending high-power operation. This improves reliability and reduces the frequency of thermally related shut-down event.
Protection Circuitry: The JX500/1D's protection circuitry automatically shuts the amplifier down if thermal limits are exceeded, a short-circuit is detected in the speaker wiring, or if low supply voltage limits are reached.
Status Indicator Lights: There are two status indicator lights on the right side of the amplifier.
- Power (Green): This LED lights green to indicate that the amplifier is turned on and operating normally.
- Protect (Red): The Protection LED lights red to indicate the amplifier's protection circuitry has been activated to prevent product failure due to thermal overload, a short-circuit, or a dangerously low impedance connected to the amplifier's outputs.
Input Sensitivity: The Input Sensitivity Control is used to match your source unit's output voltage to the input stage of the amplifier for maximum clean output:
- Low-Level Input Range: 200mV-4V (RMS)
- High-Level Input Range: 2V-10V (RMS)
Low Pass Crossover: The JL Audio JX500/1D monoblock amplifier is equipped with a 12dB/octave Butterworth low-pass filter with variable frequency selection from 50 to 200Hz.
Bass Boost: The amplifier is equipped with a variable 0 to +12dB, 45Hz Bass Boost.

- Remote Turn-On: The JL Audio JX series amplifier's set-screw turn-on lead will accept 18 to 8 AWG wire.
Note: The amplifier is not equipped with a fuse. An external 50-amp AFS, AGU, or MAXI fuse (not included) must be installed on the power wire. If a wiring kit is used which includes a fuse with a value other than 50-amps, the original should be replaced with a 50-amp fuse.
Speaker Output Terminals: The JL Audio JX500/1D features four set-screw speaker terminals for an easy parallel subwoofer connection. The monoblock amplifier's four set-screw speaker terminals will accept 16 to 8 AWG speaker wire. A 2.5mm hex-wrench is supplied for tightening/loosening the set-screws.
Preamp Inputs: The monoblock amplifier features one set of stereo RCA input jacks. The amplifier features a dedicated Input Sensitivity gain control for these inputs. These controls are designed to match the input sensitivity of the JX500/1D to the specific signal source that is feeding it. The amplifier's low-level input can be set between 200mV-4V RMS.
Speaker Level Inputs: The JL Audio JX500/1D also accepts speaker level signals, including those from factory systems (without the need for a line-output converter), via the supplied 10" speaker-level harness. The amplifier's high-level input can be set between 2V-10V RMS.
Preamp Outputs: The JX500/1D incorporates a pass-through preamp output sections, so that additional amplifiers can easily be connected to the same signal feeding the monoblock amplifier. The preamp output signal is buffered to prevent noise.

Yes. It will [ chad Feb 11, 2018 ]
I use this AMP with the stealth box in my 2015 Toyota Tacoma. The shallow mount JL Sub 10TW3-D4 coupled with this AMP is amazing. When I had it installed I could not believe how much bass this set up delivered. I had to remove the sub and amp later and put dynamat behind the setup due to it creating so much bass the back cab of my Tacoma was rattling. When I ordered this from Crutchfield the sales rep recommended this amp. He definitely nailed it, I wouldn't change anything about my system. I highly recommend this amp from my experience. I use the stock stereo that came with my Tacoma and a Audiocontrol LC7 which then ran to the JX500/1D amp mounted on the stealthbox behind the rear double cab. Hope this helps you make your choice. Sorry, the link to the amplifiers breaks when I add the required filter for the 1 Ohm capability. You can use the filter option to the left of the list of mono amps to narrow the selection to 1 Ohm capable models. You'll just need to click the box for "1" under the "Minimum Impedance Unbridged" section. [ Ryan Jul 06, 2017 ] Staff
No. In order to support two of the 12TW3-D4 subs the amp would need to be 1 Ohm stable (The JL Audio JX500/1D is not) and provide closer to 800 watts RMS at that impedance (400 per sub). Here is the wiring diagram for the 1 Ohm load: https://images.crutchfieldonline.com/ca/learningcenter/car/subwoofer_wiring/2-DVC-4-ohm-mono-low-imp.jpg And our selection of 1 Ohm capable mono amps: https://www.crutchfield.com/g_347250/Mono-Amplifiers.html?tp=35834#&nvpair=YCMinimum_Impedance_Unbridged|1 I hope that helps My Bio: https://www.crutchfield.com/bio/Ryan [ Ryan Jul 06, 2017 ] Staff
1 answer I was wondering if this amplifier is able to handle bass boosted music. More specifically when I increase the bass using Spotify's newly added equalizer function. I've known for a while that bass boosting songs can ruin your amp by virtue of imputing too much power to the amp but I was wondering if this amp could handle the bass boost via Spotify's equalizer function? [ Cap_Con1 Apr 23, 2017 ]
IMO, bass boosted music sounds terrible. You want the amplifier to boost the music file alone as it will be cleaner and less distorted. Turn the bass boost off and turn up the amplifier gain if you need to [ Matthew Apr 25, 2017 ]
Use the 4 gauge. That's what I use and the amp performs perfectly [ JAMES Mar 09, 2017 ]
You could probably get away with the 8awg but you're better off with the 4awg [ Jennifer Mar 09, 2017 ]

I went with 4 just to be on the safe side. [ ryan Mar 08, 2017 ]
1 answer Protection circuit never came on, just stopped working- no lights? I was running this for several days as part of the JLAudio soundwedge package. It ran just fine, then at loud volume it just shut off. No fuses popped, no protection light, amp is not responsive. Is it blown? [ George Sep 16, 2016 ]

Always match the RMS wattage of the speakers as close as you can to the amp rating. [ Olinda Jun 09, 2016 ]
Hi. It's all according to your ear. To get good solid bass I usually run it 3/4 of the way around. Between half and 3/4 should get you where you want it. Especially with cd's and higher quality audio. If the bass is too much with the radio you can back it down to half way. Experiment with it and see what fits your particular ears the best. Keep your bass setting on your head unit around 2 positive, any other bass settings you might have keep them neutral, in the middle. When listening to high quality audio once your woofers are broken in you can crank it on up past 3/4 if you want. They are 12's correct? [ Olinda Jun 09, 2016 ]
The input sensitivity depends on the preamp voltage output of your head unit. I think most units today are around 4V which is good. Turn the sensitivity all the way down on the amp and then turn the volume of your head unit up to around 75% of the full capacity. You can adjust the sensitivity from there until you've got a good volume. Typically, the lower you make the sensitivity, the more headroom the amplifier has so it won't clip at high volumes. [ JOSEPH Jun 09, 2016 ]
The JL Audio JX500/1D is a mono (single channel) amp so there will be no bridging. You can wire the two 4 Ohm coils of the woofer in parallel to the amplifier to present a final 2 Ohm load though. You'll just have to set the amplifier gains carefully as it does offer more wattage (500 RMS) than your woofer is rated to handle (350 RMS). I hope that helps! My Bio: http://www.crutchfield.com/Support/Bio.aspx?bio=5 [ Ryan Mar 21, 2016 ] Staff
The only way I know add a subsonic filter is by getting a crossover with one in it. You can connect the crossover on the wiring between the radio and the amp. You can turn off the amp on the amp as well [ Daniel Dec 13, 2015 ]
You still have to run the remote line back to the head unit. [ RANDY L Dec 12, 2015 ]

if I understand correctly those have a 300rms. x 2 would be 600 rms this amp is 500w. plus its a mono. my thoughts are it wont be enough. I run this amp with the jl audio stealthbox for the colorado crew cab which has the 10w3v3 with 500rms. sounds awesome, but my ears want a ported box... but thats just me. [ JASON Sep 16, 2014 ]
I'm not sure. What I would do is go to Crutchfield's website and pullup one of those subs. Check the specs on it and see what the nominal power rating is and multiply that times two. William [ William Sep 11, 2014 ]
It will power them but you may find distortion at higher output levels because it's not pushing enough rms power for 2 JLw3s . I'd look at at least a 750 or 1000 [ SPENCER Sep 11, 2014 ]
It should Brian, this little things pumps out a strong 500w with no problem. I've had mine for a few years now and it's as good now as it was new. [ CHRIS M Sep 11, 2014 ]
Hello and yes you do need it i have mine that way. [ EVERARDO Jun 26, 2014 ]
A converter is not required. This amplifier comes with an additional wire harness that you can hook up your high level output (factory speaker wires) into without a problem. And it also has an RCA output if you were to add an additional amplifier later. [ ALAN A Jun 26, 2014 ]
No you do not need a line output converter. The required wiring comes packaged with the amp to allow you a direct connection to your factory head unit via the speaker outputs of the radio [ ANTONIO Jun 26, 2014 ]
2 answers Ok I bought it early today car stereo one now I got the 2 12" JBL subwoofers and this amp I connected my subs together and ran 1 wire from one port on the sub box and then went + on the amp and the - on the other side. Like making 2 channel into one channel can I do this? Or we'll I have issue I ran it today and the amp was not even warm?? Help please? Thank you [ Mitch Feb 01, 2014 ]
