Bowers & Wilkins P9 Signature
Premium over-ear headphones
From Bowers & Wilkins: P9 Sound Notes with Thurston Moore
Our take on the Bowers & Wilkins P9 Signature by Crutchfield's Jeff Miller
"Special occasion" headphones for everyday use
The B&W P9 Signature headphones fold up to fit into their included Alcantara and leather carrying case.
I'm glad I got the chance to spend a few months with the Bowers & Wilkins P9 Signature headphones. As impressive as they are out of the box, they sound better and better the more I listen. It's kind of fitting — you could say these headphones have been 50 years in the making.
B&W — the storied British sound experts — recently celebrated their 50th anniversary, and they created these headphones to mark the milestone. They've utilized the same design and engineering experience that landed their famous speakers in recording studios like Abbey Road.
Nicely built from luxury materials
These headphones look and feel like a tricked-out version of B&W's other P-series headphones. The distinct square earcups are bigger than ever. The oversized plush earpads are butter-soft. And the sturdy, firm-fitting aluminum frame is beautifully covered in Italian Saffiano leather.
Sound profile modeled after B&W's flagship speakers
Regarding the sound, B&W had the loftiest of ambitions — the P9s are designed to emulate their super high-end 800 D3 loudspeakers. To achieve this goal, they've angled the large drivers so that they hit your ear the way stereo speakers would. Suspended piston diaphragms deliver punchy sound. And those supersized earcups create a wide open chamber for air to move around in, resulting in clean, natural sound.
A truly enjoyable listening experience
Like a pair of top-shelf speakers, these headphones benefit from a nice break-in period. I expected the novelty of "living the good life" would wear off, but they felt more relaxed the more I wore them. And the sound seemed to spread out, even as the strong bass tightened — especially noticeable when paired with a headphone amp/DAC.
I mainly listen on my laptop through an AudioQuest DragonFly Black v1.5. But these versatile headphones sound great plugged into my phone, too. One of the three included cables offers an inline mic for calls and music.
Throughout Jack White's Acoustic Recordings 1998-2016, instruments were well-defined and placed within a three-dimensional sound stage. These 'phones manage to reveal the upper registers of banjo and harp plucks without ever sounding harsh. Also striking was the complex sub-bass that fueled the production of the new Tribe Called Quest album We got it from here...Thank you 4 your service. Samples sounded distinct, yet they were still expertly mixed together with the drum claps and vocals — all surrounding my head.

Overview: The Bowers & Wilkins (B&W) flagship P9 Signature over-ear headphones are crafted with the finest materials and acoustic engineering available. They were designed by B&W's Steyning Research Establishment in West Sussex, England to reflect 50 years of audio excellence. The P9 Signature comes with an Apple-compatible cable with an in-line remote and microphone, two additional cables, a 1/4" adapter, and a luxurious carrying case.
Engineering and Design: The P9 Signature features 40mm dynamic drivers with a nylon damped cone and an advanced suspension. The CCAW (copper-clad aluminum wire) voice coils have an external large pole magnet for accuracy and power handling. The drivers are placed forward in the ear cup and angled at 15° to give you a more natural listening experience. The stereo image is aligned in front of you instead of to the side. Using Finite Element Analysis, the ear cups contain sophisticated dual acoustic cabinets of aluminum and composite materials. This design enables the drivers to reproduce your music more accurately. The headband de-couples each ear cup to prevent vibrations from transmitting between the two. The P9 Signature's ear cups and headband are covered in fine Italian Saffiano leather by Scabrenta, with a unique cross-hatch stamped finish.
Carry Case: The ear cups are hinged so you can fold them for compact storage in the leather-trimmed Alcantara carry case. This soft padded material is 100% made in Italy, and will protect your headphones from scratches and dings.
Cables: The B&W P9 Signature headphones come with three tangle-resistant audio cables. One cable has an in-line 3-button remote and microphone, designed to be used with Apple's iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. The other two cables lack the remote, and come in lengths of 53" and 16-1/2'. A 1/4" adapter is included for use with your home components that are equipped with a full-size headphone jack.

Why did you buy this?
I am a B & W customer, having owned 2 pairs of their speakers. Their products are world reknowned and are some of the best products you can buy. Seeing these headphones, reading all the good reviews, the great features, great build quality, not to mention they are beautiful, it was an easy decision to buy B & W again. If they sound as good as the reviews, and YouTube videos say they are, I will be very happy. I look forward to many hours of beautiful relaxing music listening. [ Robert Jun 04, 2017 ]
Sound made me melt [ Gary Jan 12, 2017 ]
Brand and Crutchfield is the best electronics company I have dealt with. Absolutely the best! [ Stephanie Nov 16, 2016 ]
I really wanted a Maserati, but I figure this is a reasonable and less expensive (but perhaps no less exorbitant) substitute. Also Crutchfield doesn't sell Maseratis. Now that I think about it, maybe I should have ordered those Pryma 'phones by Sonus Faber... more Italian. On the other hand, these have that Saffiani leather, so I should be good. Also B&W stuff tends to sound really good and be delivered with superb industrial design. [ William Oct 19, 2016 ]
