Our take on the Oppo UDP-203

The Oppo UDP-203 4K Blu-ray player is a pretty big deal. Our TV customers often ask us where to find 4K content to really show off their new Ultra HD screen. Ultra HD Blu-ray is the highest-quality video source available now and should be for the forseeable future. We've been eagerly awaiting the first Ultra HD Blu-ray player from Oppo — probably the most well-respected Blu-ray player manufacturer today.

Oppo UDP-203

A look under the hood reveals a sturdy, isolated disc drive and powerful video and audio processing.

Oppo's first 4K Blu-ray player

The Oppo UDP-203 4K Blu-ray player is a pretty big deal. Our TV customers often ask us where to find 4K content to really show off their new Ultra HD screen. Ultra HD Blu-ray is the highest-quality video source available now and should be for the forseeable future. We've been eagerly awaiting the first Ultra HD Blu-ray player from Oppo — probably the most well-respected Blu-ray player manufacturer today.

If you're not familiar with Oppo, their players are designed to squeeze every bit of video and audio detail from your movies and music. (We use an Oppo Blu-ray player here at Crutchfield HQ — in our training room, where all the top electronics companies demo their latest and greatest gear.) This high-performance player combines Oppo's time-tested build quality and versatility with cutting-edge 4K video.

Powerfully built from high-grade materials

Like all Oppo components, the UDP-203 is rock-solid. The disc drive itself is extra-sturdy, and utilizes an optimized laser to reduce movie load time. It's surrounded by an all-metal frame that is covered by a steel top panel and brushed aluminum front panel. This creates a heavy-duty foundation that lowers resonance and allows discs to spin smoothly and briskly.

This 9.5-pound 4K player looks and feels the part of a high-end component.

Perhaps the best 4K video processor available

But where the UDP-203 really shines next to your top A/V gear is with its internal wizardry. Oppo uses an advanced, customized quad-core 4K video decoder/processor. You'll be able to take full advantage of all the 3840 x 2160 pixels offered by 4K Blu-ray, along with the extended color range that makes the best 4K images look so rich and gorgeous. There's also a higher level of fine-tuning and tweaking available than with other 4K players, so you have full control over the picture on your screen.

And guess what? That special image processor can also make standard Blu-ray discs and DVDs look much better, too. There's even a 4K-ready HDMI input for your Apple® TV, Roku Premiere, or cable/satellite box.

Ready for current and future HDR standards

Ultra HD Blu-ray discs with HDR (High Dynamic Range) offer the best picture available today. HDR allows compatible TVs to display extremely bright and dark black picture content together within the same image. It's incredibly striking.

Now, not all 4K Blu-ray movies offer HDR, but the Oppo UDP-203 is ready for any that do. The player not only supports the required HDR 10 format, but will also support the more sophisticated Dolby Vision™ format. This dynamic system can adjust brightness and color levels on a scene-by-scene basis.

Back of Oppo UDP-203

The Oppo UDP-203 offers a plethora of connections, including 7.1-channel RCA audio outputs.

Riveting movie sound and high-resolution music

Oppo players are famous for their top-flight sound, and true to the company's name, the UDP-203 brings it. The audio capabilities rival the quality of the video processing. Plus there are outputs galore — both digital and analog — for connecting to a receiver, preamp, or amplifier. Oppo also supports all the latest Dolby and DTS surround sound formats for movies (including Atmos and DTS:X when connected to a receiver via HDMI).

For music, you can play CDs or SACDs, connect a hard drive or thumb drive to one of three USB ports, or play tunes from a networked computer or music server. High-resolution downloads should sound pristine (the player can handle FLAC, ALAC, DSD files, and more). But even lesser-quality music files will enjoy a boost from the powerful built-in 8-channel DAC. It's why this workhorse of a player belongs in a high-end music setup as much as a top-of-the-line home theater.

  • Playback Time: 17.43 seconds (the Playback Time test began with the player initially turned off and ended when the loaded disc began playback)

Multiple Disc Formats: The design of the UDP-203 focuses on quality playback and universal compatibility with multiple disc and file formats. In addition to the latest UHD Blu-ray, the UDP-203 supports regular Blu-ray, Blu-ray 3D, DVD, DVD-Audio, SACD, audio CD, and more.

Disc Type Disc Description
Blu-ray UHD-BD, BD-ROM, BD-R, BD-RE, BD-3D
CD CD-Audio, SACD, CD-R, CD-RW, Kodak Picture CD
Note: The UDP-203 supports NTSC and PAL systems for both disc playback and video output.

Ultra HD Blu-Ray: Ultra HD Blu-ray provides these key features and advantages over standard Blu-ray.

  • 4K Resolution: Ultra HD Blu-ray supports resolutions of up to 3840 x 2160 pixels. That's 4x as many pixels as Full HD televisions, and 27x as many pixels as Standard Definition televisions
  • Wider Color Gamut: Ultra HD Blu-ray can display over 75% of the visible color spectrum; this is known as "Wider Color Gamut". That's more than twice the color range of current HDTVs.
  • HDR (High Dynamic Range): Ultra HD Blu-ray also supports High Dynamic Range (HDR) video. Dynamic range is the difference between the brightest whites and the darkest blacks on screen. HDR means that scenes with high contrast can be shown with much greater clarity and detail.
  • Smooth, Realistic Motion: Ultra HD Blu-ray supports progressive frame rates of 24, 25, 50 and 60 frames a second, enabling smoother, more realistic motion.
  • Greater Capacity & Speed: Ultra HD Blu-ray Discs will be available in a dual layer 66 gigabyte disc and a triple layer 100 gigabyte disc. Ultra HD Blu-ray can stream video up to a maximum of 108/128 Mbps for 66Gb and 100Gb discs.
  • Backward Compatible: Ultra HD Blu-ray players will play all current Blu-ray Disc & DVD content. When connected to a current HDTV television, the player will output a standard HDTV signal. Ultra HD Blu-ray players will support existing Blu-ray media, as well as provide down conversion and HDR to SDR conversion functionality to match the connected television's capabilities.
Note: Like standard BD, Ultra HD Blu-ray discs use region codes. The region code on your disc must match the region code on your player, otherwise the disc will not play. This Blu-ray player is region A and DVD region 1. Blu-ray Disc uses the Advanced Access Content System (AACS) to prevent unauthorized recording of copyrighted material.

3 USB-A Ports: The UDP-203 is equipped with two USB (type-A) 3.0 ports on the back and one USB (type-A) 2.0 port on the front to connect a USB MSC (Mass Storage Class) device, like a USB thumb or flash drive. You can play video, music and photos from compatible USB MSC devices formatted in FAT (File Allocation Table), FAT32, exFAT or NTFS (New Technology File System). The USB ports are rated to provide a maximum of 5V/1A power to your connected USB drive.

Note: You can also add background music to the photo slideshow. To do so, you will need to prepare digital music files. The music files can be stored on the same disk as the photos, or on a different USB drive.

Compatible Audio/Video/Photo Files: The OPPO UHD Blu-ray disc player supports playback of the following audio/video/photo files recorded on BD-R/RE, DVD+R/RW, DVD-R/RW, and CD-R/RW discs; plus compatible USB memory devices.

  • Supported Audio Files: AAC, AIFF, ALAC, DSD64, FLAC, MP3, WAV, and WMA

Firmware & Software Updates: As Blu-Ray technology continues to evolve, new disc types with enhanced functionality will become available. In order for you to enjoy this new functionality, you will likely be required to update the firmware in your player. These firmware updates can be downloaded to the player via USB, disc, or network.

Video Section

Quad-Core Video Processor: With over a decade of experience developing high-end DVD and Blu-ray players, OPPO has once again teamed with MediaTek to produce and manufacture a specialized 4K UHD Blu-ray decoder SoC - the quad-core OP8591, which offers the most advanced image decoding and processing technology available for 4K UHD Blu-ray, Blu-ray, DVD and user generated media formats.

HDMI Connectivity: The OPPO UDP-203 is outfitted with two HDMI outputs (1 audio/video & 1 audio only), plus a HDMI input.

  • Dual HDMI Outputs (1 AV/1 Audio only): The player features two HDMI outputs - an HDMI 2.0a port for connecting to the latest UHD TVs, projectors and AV receivers, and an HDMI 1.4 audio port for connecting to older AV receivers. Customers with newer 4K- and HDR-capable AV receivers can use a full HDMI 2.0a signal path, while customers with older AV receivers can have a split AV setup.
  • HDMI Input: An HDMI 2.0a input that supports UHD 4K resolution and HDR (via a firmware update) is available for users to connect an external streaming device, satellite/cable box, or game console. The incoming signal is processed by the player and output to your connected display, allowing you to take advantage of the player's built-in audio and video processing capabilities. This approach affords users the flexibility to choose from a wide range of devices and easily upgrade as technologies evolve, while still taking advantage of the UDP-203's audio and video processing capabilities.

4K Content Support: The UDP-203 supports the playback of 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Discs. Packing a resolution of up to 3840 x 2160 pixels, UHD Blu-ray delivers 4x the pixels of Full HD Blu-ray. The UDP-203 is also capable of playing 4K media files and user generated content. Support for decoding the HEVC, H.264, VP9 4K, and Hi10P (10-bit) video codecs provides increased compatibility with user generated media.

Note: It is recommended to use an 18 Gbps Premium High-Speed HDMI cable to watch 4K UHD movies.

Ultra HD 4K with Upscaling: The UDP-203 features support for all current SD, HD, and UHD resolutions, including 4K@60p, 4K@50p, 4K@30p, and 4K@24p using various color spaces such as PC RGB, Video RGB, YCbCr 4:4:4, 4:2:2, and 4:2:0. The UDP-203 is also capable of upscaling lower resolution content up to 4Kx2K at 50/60Hz to a compatible display, which is 4x the resolution found on a 1080p Blu-ray disc.

HDR (High Dynamic Rage) Video: The UDP-203 supports High Dynamic Range (HDR) and Wide Color Gamut. The enhanced resolution, refined contrast, greater brightness, and expanded color produce stunning video with unparalleled clarity and detail. In addition to supporting HDR on Ultra-HD Blu-ray, it is also capable of providing an accurate conversion of HDR to SDR for older displays, as well as conversion between various color spaces such as BT.2020, BT.709, and BT.601. The UDP-203 supports both HDR10 and Dolby Vision.

  • HDR 10: HDR 10 is an open standard and currently the most popular HDR format on the market. It supports 10-bit color and 1,000 nits. It uses static metadata at the start of a movie to tell the receiver and your TV that the video content is encoded using HDR.
  • Dolby Vision: Unlike HDR 10 which contains static metadata, Dolby Vision utilizes dynamic metadata which adjusts brightness, color, and contrast automatically for each scene. Dynamic metadata carries information that maps every image to your TV's display capabilities, so you see more of what the content creator intended. Dolby Vision supports 12-bit color and 10,000 nits

3D-Ready: The OPPO UDP-203 lets you enjoy 3D Blu-ray disc movies in full HD 1080p. 3D viewing requires compatible 3D content, 3D-ready HDTV, 3D emitter and glasses, and a high-speed HDMI cable (supporting at least 10.2 Gbps) connection.

Advanced Picture Control: The UDP-203 also features advanced picture controls. Adjustments can be made to brightness, contrast, hue, saturation, sharpness and noise reduction, allowing you to make adjustments to compensate for any limitations found in your other home theater components, or merely to adjust the image to your own personal taste.

Zoom Levels: This feature zooms in and out of the displayed frame and also changes the aspect ratio (image width vs. height). Select from Stretch, Full Screen, 1:1, Compress, or Under Scan.

  • Stretch: The image is vertically stretched 1.33x. For movies with 2.35:1 aspect ratio, this zoom level cuts off the black borders at the top and bottom of the image. Users of a projector with an anamorphic lens may find this mode helpful.
  • Full Screen: The image is stretched by 1.33x for both vertical and horizontal directions. For movies with 2.35:1 aspect ratio, this zoom level cuts off the black borders at the top and bottom of the image while maintaining the correct aspect ratio. The left/right sides of the image are slightly cropped.
  • 1:1: The image fills up the entire 16:9 screen but is horizontally stretched. Figures may look shorter and wider than they should be.
  • Compress: The player maintains the correct 4:3 aspect ratio and adds borders to the left and right sides of the image.
  • Under Scan: The Under Scan zoom level shrinks the image by 5%. This zoom level may be used to compensate for TVs that over scan, so the viewer can see the entire image area with no cropping. All other zoom levels are indicated by their respective zoom ratio

Source Direct Mode: For users who wish to use an external video processor, high-end audio/video receiver or display, the UDP-203 offers a "Source Direct" mode. The original audio/video content on the discs is sent out with no additional processing or alteration. The actual output resolution varies by content -

Content Source Direct Output Resolution
PAL DVD 576i
Most Blu-ray Movies (film source) Ultra HD (4K) 23.976Hz or Ultra HD (4K) 24Hz 1080p 23.976Hz or 1080p 24Hz
Most Blu-ray TV shows or Concerts (video-source) 1080i
SACD and DVD-Audio 1080p

Subtitle Shift: For customers using a 2.35:1 "Constant Image Height" video projection system, subtitles may get cut off because they are positioned outside of the active video area. The Subtitle Shift feature can be useful to these customers. The player can shift subtitles up or down so they are displayed within the active video area.

Bonus View: The Bonus View feature provides picture-in-picture capability with select Blu-ray Disc titles. You can view addition content (such as director/actor commentary) in a small display window while the movie is playing.

Audio Section

High Quality Metal Construction: The UDP-203 features a brushed aluminum front-panel and metal chassis that continues the tradition of excellent workmanship found in previous generations of OPPO universal players.

32-Bit/192kHz DAC: The UDP-203 features a premium 32-bit DAC from AKM, the AK4458VN, which is an 8-channel DAC with support for formats such as 192kHz/32-bit PCM and multi-channel DSD. You can even configure the digital filter for the audio DAC. Choose from Sharp Roll Off, Short-Delay Sharp (default), Slow Roll-Off, Short-Delay Slow, or Super Slow.

Lossless High-resolution Audio: The UDP-203's video performance and universal compatibility is further complemented by its support of lossless high resolution audio. The player decodes audio file formats such as AIFF, WAV, ALAC, APE and FLAC. It also directly plays Direct-Stream Digital (DSD) audio files in stereo or multi-channel.

Note: DSD64 is played back in native mode or converted to PCM, while DSD128 converted to PCM.

Note: The above chart provides a reference to what type of audio signal can be expected (when Secondary Audio is off).

Pure Audio Mode: You can enjoy higher quality music audio by turning off the video processing and output. The Pure Audio mode reduces any potential interference between the video and audio signals. Because HDMI carries audio together with video, the HDMI video signal cannot be completely turned off. A black screen is transmitted instead to minimize any potential interference.

A/V Sync: Allows you to add a slight delay to the audio so it is synchronized to the video. The delay can be adjusted in 10ms steps and within the range of -100ms to +200ms. The delayed time will be applied to all output terminals including HDMI, Coaxial, Optical, and 7.1ch outputs.

Dynamic Range Control (DRC): DRC can smooth out the sonic peaks and valleys common with wide-range digital audio. Enabling DRC may make low level audio more audible during low-level listening. The Dynamic Range Compression is applied on the analog audio output; it also works on the digital audio output (HDMI, Coaxial and Optical) when the audio format is set to PCM.

Down Mix Mode: Down mix is the process of converting multi-channel audio to less number of channels. For example, converting a 5.1ch source to stereo, or converting a 7.1ch source to 5.1ch. Down mixing allows the audio output from the player to match the exact number of speakers available in your home theater. The following down mix modes are available.

  • LT/RT: Left Total/Right Total. The center and surround channels are mixed into the two front channels according to the LT/RT matrix. A Dolby Pro Logic receiver will decode the two-channel audio into surround audio.
  • Stereo: This mode down-mixes multi-channel audio to 2-channel stereo output. For original stereo content the output will not change. For original multi-channel content the surround and center channels will be mixed with the left and right front channels. Recommended for use with TV sets or stereo receiver/amplifiers.
  • 5.1Ch: This mode enables 5.1ch decoded audio output. The number of actual output channels depends on the disc. If the source content has more channels, the surround back channels will be mixed into the surround channels.
  • 7.1Ch: This mode enables 7.1ch decoded audio output. The number of actual output channels depends on the disc. For 6.1ch contents, the left and right surround back speakers will both output the same surround back audio channel.

Optical & Coaxial Digital Outputs: In addition to HDMI connectivity, the UDP-203 is equipped with coaxial (RCA) and optical (toslink) digital audio outputs to provide backward compatibility with legacy audio components. The optical and coaxial digital outputs support 48k LPCM, 96k LPCM, 192k PCM, and Bitstream (Dolby Digital/DTS).

  • Due to bandwidth limitations, high resolution audio formats such as Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD High Resolution and DTS-HD Master Audio cannot be sent through the coaxial or optical digital audio output. A reduced resolution version of the same audio track will be output instead.
  • Due to copyright restrictions, SACD audio cannot be sent through the coaxial or optical digital audio output. To listen to SACDs, please use the HDMI or analog audio connections.
  • Due to copyright restrictions and bandwidth limitations, full resolution audio from DVD-Audio discs cannot be sent through the coaxial or optical digital audio output. To listen to DVD Audio in full resolution, please use the HDMI or analog audio connections.

7.1Ch Analog Output: To ensure compatibility with older amplifiers, pre-amps, and receivers that do not support HDMI, the UDP-203 retains a 7.1 multichannel analog output section, which delivers an incredible soundstage and an immersive surround experience. The 7.1ch analog output can also be used a 2ch stereo analog output by using only the front left & right output channels.

Speaker Configuration: In the Speaker Configuration menu you can configure speaker settings such as speaker distance, speaker size, crossover frequency, and trim level.

  • Test Tone: Test tone is a special group of artificially-created sounds that are used to test your audio speaker system and help to identify any wiring faults.
  • Speaker Size: The speaker size parameter sets bass filtering control for the speakers. The options are:
    • Large: Bass frequencies are passed to the speakers.
    • Small: Bass frequencies are not passed to the speakers to reduce possible distortion. If the subwoofer is available, bass frequencies are redirected to the subwoofer.
    • On (for subwoofer only): Specifies that a subwoofer is available
    • Off: Speaker for the corresponding position does not exist. Audio for the missing speaker is redirected to other speakers or discarded if redirection is not possible.
  • Crossover: When a speaker size is set to "Small", bass information below the selected crossover frequency (40/60/80/90/100/110/120/150/200/250Hz) is not passed to the speaker to reduce possible distortion; and if a subwoofer is available, the bass information will be redirected to the subwoofer.
  • Speaker Distance: The speaker distance parameters set delay control for the corresponding audio channel. The delay is used to compensate for the audio time difference caused by the placement of speakers. The speaker distance can be set from 0 to 60'.
  • Trim Level: The speaker trim level parameters sets the volume of each individual channel. The trim level can be set to +/- 10dB in 0.5dB increments. Channel trim is generally not required since most A/V receivers have the capability to adjust.
Note: Speaker Configuration applies to the multi-channel analog audio outputs only. All digital bitstream and LPCM outputs are unaffected by these settings.

Network Functions

Wired or Wireless Network Connection: Built-in 802.11ac WiFi or Gigabit Ethernet connects the UDP-203 to your home's network, so you can easily play media files stored on computers and home servers. The built-in wireless module is compatible with 802.11 a/b/g/n (2.4GHz/5GHz) and 802.11 ac (5GHz) wireless networks. The remote control features a motion sensor to activate the backlight for five seconds when you pick up the remote or press a button on the remote. When using the remote control, the front window of the remote control should be pointed to the infrared sensor on the front panel within an angle of +/-30°and a range of about 26'.

Note: The remote control contains three OPPO remote codes. The default is Code 1. If you have other OPPO products placed close to the UDP-203, they may inadvertently respond to the UDP-203 remote control. To prevent this, you can select a different remote code

Remote Integration: The UDP-203 is easy to integrate into practically any system due to its ability to receive standard IR, RS-232, third party IP Control system, and HDMI CEC commands. The player also has a Trigger In and Out.

  • HDMI CEC: HDMI Consumer Electronics Control (HDMI CEC) simplifies your home theater by allowing a single remote control to operate multiple devices through HDMI connection.
  • RS-232C Port: The UDP-203 has an RS232 control port and can be integrated into most custom home theater control systems
  • Trigger In/Out: The player also supports Trigger In and Out, so it can automatically turn on and off other devices connected to it for the ultimate convenience.

RCA outputs so I didn't need to update my receiver - no other players have this feature. Also, it's Oppo and they're getting out of the disc playing market. Always wanted one so it was now or never. [ MATTHEW J  Apr 21, 2018 ]

Quality of audio converters SACD capability and 4k [ JAKE  Apr 03, 2018 ]
It seems to get consistently high grades for quality, build, picture and sound. Seems many of your staff has one as well as Video Review staff, etc. Rarely a bad thing anyone has to say about it except for no streaming apps, which I seldom use from my player. Have a Sony UPD-X800 that I like, but I miss the front panel display, and the Oppo also displays more disc info than the Sony. Also like the 7.1 analog output. [ James  Apr 01, 2018 ]
Item highly rated [ Ted  Apr 01, 2018 ]
Thanks you for the lowest price out there! It's the last minutes of March and I've been searching which to buy--203 or 205. Came down to this and now my bud with his previous generations oppo told me he hates me hahah [ David  Apr 01, 2018 ]

I have been wanting an Oppo since seeing one at a friend's House for years. Also; I will be upgrading my TV to a 4k unit soon. This allows a more seamless transition. [ Thomas  Mar 31, 2018 ]

Excellent processing and build quality. [ New User  Mar 25, 2018 ]
After lots of comparison shopping your website had the cheapest price for the product AND the fastest shipping, for FREE!!! It was a no brainer. [ Marc  Mar 25, 2018 ]
I chose the Oppo UDP-204 because of its compatibility with both HDR10 and Dolby Vision, its multiple connectivity options, and its build quality. Lack of streaming services was not an issue for me . . . I have that available from several other sources and it would simply be redundant in yet another component. [ THOMAS  Mar 24, 2018 ]
I am using Xbox one X as a 4k bluray player, but it doesn't support external subtitles. Moreover, the performance of it is not enough for me I think, and using a gaming console as a bluray player is somewhat uncomfortable. I have heard a lot of positive things about Oppo 203. Many people tole me it is one of the best players in the world. I am so excited to get this awesome player! [ Namwook  Mar 24, 2018 ]
To pair with my new LG OLED 4K TV and to use to upscale my satellite reception and AppleTV. Excited to have a high end audio player as well. [ Justin  Mar 24, 2018 ]

I have UDP-93 that worked great for many year, time to upgrade to 4K [ Thomas  Mar 17, 2018 ]
excellent reviews [ Mukesh  Mar 17, 2018 ]
High build quality, even though made with chinese parts, previous Oppo units have always been rock solid. It also has Dolby Vision support. Even though no Sony TV does. [ Jeremy  Mar 16, 2018 ]
Crutchfield always has lots of information on products, plus they always carry quality products. Saw a feature they did on this blu-ray player the day before my blu-ray player died! I knew this is the one I wanted to replace it. [ Albert  Mar 16, 2018 ]
I'm hoping this lives up to the hype. I chose this unit because I've heard nothing but good things about and am looking for a good multi-format disc player for a dedicated home theater room. [ Mike  Mar 15, 2018 ]

I have never heard a bad word about Oppo products. Reasonable price and best in class performance, cant ask for better. [ Derrick  Mar 11, 2018 ]
High end product with dolby vision. Best on the market! [ Sheryll  Mar 10, 2018 ]
Excellent reputation. They seem more inclined to keep their products current with firmware updates than other manufacturers. [ William  Mar 07, 2018 ]
I wanted the very best 4K player that could also convert an external HDMI input to 4K and could process Dolby Vision. [ Robert  Mar 07, 2018 ]
Reviews from a number of seller's web sites. [ Big T  Mar 06, 2018 ]
Very positive reviews [ Richard  Mar 06, 2018 ]
High Quality [ Robert  Mar 05, 2018 ]
4K Dolby Vision with SACD capabilities makes this a great player [ ryan  Mar 04, 2018 ]
I own three Blu-ray Oppo players and have been very happy with them. Oppo's latest 4K players are consistently rated best for picture and audio quality and have the highest compatibility amongst available video and audio formats. I selected the UDP-203 over the UDP-205 as I do not require the 2 channel analog audio performance provided by the UDP-205, particularly given the price difference. [ Mark  Mar 04, 2018 ]
Will be upgrading TV to 4K and after spending lot of time researching this seemed my best choice for my price range. I download and play Hi-def music so this will be a plus too. [ PATRICK J  Mar 03, 2018 ]

Very highly rated. Oppo makes very high quality products. [ Russell  Feb 28, 2018 ]
All the positive reviews. [ Joseph  Feb 26, 2018 ]
Very excellent reviews from several sources. I also owned an older Oppo and it was phenominal. [ Darren  Feb 22, 2018 ]
Already have an older Oppo 103. It's awesome! After reading so many great reviews, the Oppo UDP-203 should be an excellent Ultra Blu-ray player! Plus, Crutchfield is the best electronics retailer in the business!!! [ Alfred J.  Feb 20, 2018 ]
After some research I did this player came in at my price point and I wanted something better then your average LG,Samsung players that are cheap. The one I currently use will play most Blu Rays but then randomly wont play others at all. I wanted a good quality build and sleek look as well. I wanted an up to date player for playing UHD 4k Blu Ray plus regular Blu Ray discs. I've been shopping this for a while and decided to just go for it. Looking forward to it. [ Adam  Feb 20, 2018 ]
To pair with my OLED [ A  Feb 20, 2018 ]
This is my fourth OPPO unit from DVD to Blu-Ray to UHD BD. They have been the most reliable units with constant firmware updates and superior construction [ Scott  Feb 19, 2018 ]
Based on my research and reviews, this is the best 4k dvd player for the price. It supports Atmos and DTS X which is very important to me. It should work well with my new LG OLED 4k tv and my Yamaha rx v670 receiver. [ Willie  Feb 17, 2018 ]

Previous Oppo DVD owner, upgrading to UHD 4K [ David  Feb 09, 2018 ]
Great reviews on this product [ Annette  Feb 09, 2018 ]
The Oppo was one of the only units that had true universal disc playback compatibility, true full 4K native processing (not upscaling) and component output for the high resolution audio. The construction looks solid and the brand reputation as an industry reference standard makes this worth every penny! Crutchfield, thanks for making this amazing unit available with the best price out there! [ Stephen  Feb 07, 2018 ]
If you have an OLED, there is no other choice. [ Jonathan  Feb 07, 2018 ]
Recommendation and reviews [ Raymond  Feb 06, 2018 ]
The Oppo UDP -203 seems to be the disc player for forward and backward compatibility of video and audio formats. I was looking for a well made component for playing video discs, including 3D blu-ray, with respectable audio quality (hopefully no clicks or pops in disc playback). With 3D TV production dead (on hold?), I also wanted a player that could survive as my last 3D disc player. I don't need more streaming apps. [ John  Feb 06, 2018 ]
The videos on both OPPO models were very helpful. [ Robert S.  Feb 04, 2018 ]
Reviews of all of the UHD players (available at time of purchase) pointed to Oppo being second to none. I personally like the fact that it does not have any apps/online streaming capabilities...I don't want that in a disc player as it has only one job, nor do I need several devices that are all capable of streaming Netflix, so thank you, Oppo, for going against the status quo.. The quality, reputation, and focus on purpose justified the price for this unit. Dolby Vision is a plus as well. [ Bradley C.  Feb 02, 2018 ]
Overwhelming positive comments from you website, as well as others [ Jerrell  Feb 02, 2018 ]
Quality of construction, components, feature set is what I was looking for without any bloat. [ Michael  Feb 02, 2018 ]
Recommendation in Wall Street Journal last weekend, and I need to replace a failed Blu-Ray player. [ Harold  Feb 02, 2018 ]
Great reviews and I have been reading about this player on avsforums [ brad  Feb 01, 2018 ]
Good reviews. [ Renato  Jan 30, 2018 ]
Has 2 HDMI out connections. Supports Dolby Vision. Reviews of LG UP970 say it is noisy and Firmware update for Dolby Vision still not available. The Oppo is a bit pricey. But with all the 5 star reviews sounds like a very good unit. [ John Grubbs  Jan 29, 2018 ]

I did my research and double checked with multiple credible sources. This is the best player for the money on the market, bar none. There are some competent players at lower price points but I went with the player that makes no compromises. [ Berton  Jan 22, 2018 ]
Need a high quality 4K Blu Ray Player for a Home Theater project I'm working on. Have used this player before and really like it. [ Dean  Jan 22, 2018 ]
This is the best 4k Blu-Ray player you can buy. [ John  Jan 20, 2018 ]
My Sony es-1000 was 8 years old and I wanted newer technology. [ John  Jan 18, 2018 ]
The on-line evaluations caused me to down select to this product and the Panasonic UB900. The pricing confusion on the Panasonic at various sites listed on Amazon and the delivery charge/timing resulted in the Oppo 203 being my final choice. I purchased it from Crutchfield because it will be delivered by Friday for use at a party on Saturday. [ Charles  Jan 17, 2018 ]

Because I purchased a Samsung 78" 4K TV from Crutchfield it is now time to upgrade my Blu-ray player to 4K UHD. I have owned an Oppo BDP-93 since 2012 so the UDP-203 is the only choice for me! [ ERIC  Jan 15, 2018 ]
I had a Oppo 105 and it worked flawlessly, very user friendly. I am sold on Oppo the reason I just purchased the Oppo 203! [ Alan Aipperspach  Jan 15, 2018 ]

I have had two others before . Incredible stuff and customer service is unreal . [ Julia  Jan 06, 2018 ]
OPPO is a great blue ray player. I have a older model in my living room. The color on my tv is awesome with my older model, you can't go wrong with this product. Oppo-UDP-203 is for my bedroom tv. I have a older Sony that takes for ever to load and to play a dvd movie. Also I wanted the latest in a blue ray player. So its time to upgrade to the top of the line OPPO. [ BROOKSEY  Jan 05, 2018 ]
Previous experience with the Oppo 93 made me realize they make the best players on the market. [ Lee  Jan 04, 2018 ]
Good reviews from customers and professionals. Only bad thing I read or heard is the price, but if the product is half as good as the reviews, it will be worth the money. [ JOHN  Jan 03, 2018 ]
Had a previous model (UDP-103) and it is the BEST Blu-ray player on the market. Performed flawlessly. A little more expensive than other models but a very good investment. Received a very good price for my old player because of the high quality and they retain their value. [ ART  Jan 02, 2018 ]
Numerous customer reviews suggesting the Oppo UDP-203 is the desired DVD/CD player for audiophiles. Excellent summary of specifications including details concerning connectivity. Excellent website Crutchfield. My first source for my audio purchases. [ Gregory  Jan 01, 2018 ]

excellent brand build history, great customer reviews and need quality product to add to my fine audio video components owned. [ ROBERT  Dec 28, 2017 ]
Previous blu-ray player was Oppo and has preformed beautifully over the years.Between Crutchfield's and Oppo's customer service and technical support I couldn't find a better player. [ James  Dec 28, 2017 ]
After suffering with supposed high-end blu-ray players from other manufacturers over the past few years, I decided to go with the OPPO-203. I was tired of discs not loading or them locking up as well as really poor app support. I can stream content with many of my other devices so why not get a quality built dedicated player that is highly respected. It even comes with a 2 year warranty, how about that. I'm looking forward to unboxing and installing the 203 next week. [ Sean  Dec 28, 2017 ]
Lots of research. Best 4K blu ray player. [ David  Dec 26, 2017 ]

Current owner of two Oppo Digital blu ray players (model 83 and 95). Great products. Very good PQ and DVD upscaling (the 95 has great audiophile features and connections). Both players has a quality build. Waiting to see what the UDP- 203 can do with my LG OLED C7P 4K TV. [ Eddie  Dec 13, 2017 ]
Free shipping [ Justin  Dec 11, 2017 ]
I choose this primarily because I just purchased a LG OLED and wanted a solid 4k player with HDR/Dolby Vision (I currently don't own a blu-ray player of any sort). The way things are going with online video content, I figured this just maybe the last player of any sort I will ever buy so I wanted something that would last. [ Ankur  Dec 10, 2017 ]
I chose this unit based on brand reputation and build quality, I wanted something a step up from the $100 mass produced variety. [ Michael  Dec 10, 2017 ]

Recently upgraded system to play 4K video. Watched Crutchfield video regarding this product, and decided on it versus other (cheaper) brands as a result. [ Paul  Dec 05, 2017 ]
My Oppo BDP-103 will continue to shine for years to come but the 203 is a no-brainer compliment to my new Sony A1E OLED TV. And now that it is Roon Ready, it's almost like I'm getting a fantastic 4K Blu-ray player as a bonus with my long anticipated purchase of my first Roon endpoint. I'M WINNING! [ richard  Dec 04, 2017 ]
Many positive reviews on the product, just bought a new 4K TV and needed a complimentary DVD Player to provide quality DVD content. [ Joseph  Dec 03, 2017 ]

Previous Oppo products ownership. [ Edwin  Dec 02, 2017 ]
Always have owned OPPO players....I would buy nothing else. [ James  Dec 02, 2017 ]
Thought about the 205, but I'm older (aka: don't need all the bells / whistles) and connecting to an older TV / receiver. Read and watched the reviews, and as others have noted, I've come to respect the knowledge of the staff. So, let's give this a shot, older Denon finally died, this will be first Oppo, so we'll see! [ MARK  Dec 01, 2017 ]
It appears to be the best Blu-ray player that exists in this price range. [ Charles  Dec 01, 2017 ]

The build quality, coupled with the extraordinary number of 5 star reviews. [ Kenneth W.  Dec 01, 2017 ]
Great ratings and appears to be a very reliable player for 4K. In addition, it can connect to older receivers for great audio sound. [ Michael  Nov 30, 2017 ]
Top of the line blu ray player at a great price. [ Clint  Nov 30, 2017 ]
Believe this will provide good performance and short-midterm future proof functionality (i.e. Dolby Vision). Also chose for the HDMI input for 4K streaming (a leap of faith if it will support HDR in the future), as well as 2 HDMI outputs (1 for my Marantz 8801 preamp, the other for Sony Z9D TV). Will also play the few DVD-A and SACD discs I own. Good experience with my older Oppo BDP-83 unit. Chose this over the Panasonic DMP-UB900. [ Gary  Nov 29, 2017 ]

Have one of the first Oppo DVD players and loved it (10+yrs). Time for an upgrade. Have a TV that is 4K, but Marantz receiver (only 3yrs old) is not 4K. Looking for this mighty little Oppo to help take up the receiver slack. [ ANGELLA M  Nov 28, 2017 ]

My first Oppo was the best sounding and picture from a DVD player I ever have heard and seen. Time for 4K upgrade. [ Paul  Nov 25, 2017 ]
Because I'm currently using a Sony UBP-X800 and hate it, as I've had constant problems with it shutting down every 20 minutes when watching discs. The Oppo 203 seems to be defacto standard for 4K blu players, and I'm willing to spend more on a higher quality player. I'm also wanting a player that has Dolby Vision support. [ Jason  Nov 24, 2017 ]
Excellent reviews on WEB. [ Manuel  Nov 24, 2017 ]
It has support for Dolby Vision and HDR10. My television has support for both. The XBOX One X had issue with its 4K disc player out of the gate, so here I am. [ Daniel  Nov 24, 2017 ]

Supposed to be the best 4k player on the market and it has dolby vision which will pair nicely with my LG OLED tv. I would of tried another player for less money but they there are no other players that currently offer dolby vision. [ eric  Nov 19, 2017 ]
We have an OLED at home. We want the absolute best picture quality for our 4k playback. Oppo supports Dolby Vision, which out TV does very well. [ Bryon  Nov 18, 2017 ]
Love the quality of Oppo players and this specific model is one of very few that have working Dolby Vision playback. [ Steven  Nov 16, 2017 ]
I play SACD, DVD-A & Blu-Ray Audio and have multiple NAS with FLAC. The UDP203 has good DAC and OPPO is fairly reliable. I expect to give in to household 4K OLED lobby soon enough to take it into account. Streaming from internet not a realistic option in bandwidth-limited rural Alaska. [ BRADLEY  Nov 16, 2017 ]

I chose the Oppo UDP-203 to go along with my new TCL 55P605 UHD TV. The TV supports both HDR10 and Dolby Vision, so I wanted a UHD Blu-Ray player that also supports those formats. The Sony UBP-X800 supports only HDR10, and from what I have read, there are no plans to support Dolby Vision at this time. The video quality is excellent in the UDP-203. I have looked forward to this purchase for a while now, and I am not disappointed. [ ROBERT B  Sep 15, 2017 ]

Scary that a player that ranked second had 15% negative reviews out of about 200 consumer reviews. You can't beat Crutchfield pricing with Amazon, either. [ Bruce  May 03, 2017 ]
Plays DVD Audio & SACD's as well as 4k Ultra disks [ Mark E.  May 03, 2017 ]

The reason I selected the Oppo UDP-203 is the because of the custom 4K/UHD video processing chip. The other vendors use the same 4K/UHD chips from their UHD TVs. [ Andrew  May 01, 2017 ]

Quality components and great reviews. [ timothy  Apr 14, 2017 ]
Having purchased a new 4k display, we needed an player that could play actual 4k discs. While our Xbox One S does an admiral job, I didn't want it pulling double duty. Besides, as an audio/videophile, the idea of using a game console as a movie player just doesn't sit well with me. Knowing Oppo's incredible reputation, the stellar customer reviews and it's ability to play SACD & DVD-A discs along with our growing 4k library, the UDP-203 is an absolute no-brainer. [ Byron Dean  Apr 14, 2017 ]
Outstanding product, fully described by Crutchfield and others. When I decided to buy, there was no question about where I would buy it; Crutchfield, my years long reliable, full service supplier of all things video and audio. [ Warren  Apr 14, 2017 ]

I heard it's the best in the game right now. [ Kolapo  Mar 28, 2017 ]
My current OPPO loads discs much faster than any blu-ray player I have tried. It also plays discs that my other players have trouble with. And many years later, OPPO still has the best rating. I also want to use it to play high resolution 4K slide shows from camera .jpeg's on USB drives. And plays 3D and 4K discs, both of these upgrades will be new to me. I used reward points from recent purchase of new 3D/4K projector to partly pay for this. [ William  Mar 28, 2017 ]

As an owner of an earlier OPPO model, I know and understand the quality and support of the company that makes the OPPO. Years after buying my first OPPO, they are still updating the firmware and the unit is spectacular.... I knew that I needed to consider OPPO for my new 4K player, and when I saw that Crutchfield carried them, it was a no brainer, as their support, too is also second to none. [ Robert  Feb 02, 2017 ]
Picture Quality and the fact one reviewer said it worked well with his OLED. I've heard of one review elsewhere that said a Panasonic model wouldn't recognize an OLED and no one seemed to be able to figure it out. [ Rod  Feb 02, 2017 ]

It plays just about every kind of disc. 4K. Analog audio inputs. [ Jim  Jan 19, 2017 ]
Based on conversation with CJ online and my research. Recently purchased a Denon DBT-3313 and was happy with it, until I read about the Oppo which wasn't available when I ordered the Denon. Plan on A/B'ing them at home and returning the lesser of the two which I expect to be the Denon based on more features(Denon can't play 4K Ultra HD discs). Music quality more important to me than video, so that will be my focus. [ Dirk  Jan 19, 2017 ]

38 questions already asked

As far as I know it does. I have a 7 ch system and Atmos sound tracks are pretty impressive. [ JAMES  Apr 21, 2018 ]
Yes it does. As long as you have a AVR that also does. [ Jim  Apr 21, 2018 ]
Yes, it does both Atmos & DTS X. It's a great machine with incredible quality. The company has announced it will be stopping production of all their DVD/Blu-ray devices. You won't find a better made machine. The Ultra Blu-ray disc player is incredible as well. Make sure you have a receiver that us Atmos & DTS X capable as well. [ SCOTT  Apr 21, 2018 ]
No. It does not. If you want Atoms, you need to HDMI out to external AVR or processor. [ Jean  Apr 21, 2018 ]
I have an older Sony Bravia KDL-46V5100 from around 2009, and I have no problems playing DVD or Blu Ray disks. Originally, I was going to replace the TV, but the picture is absolutely amazing with the Oppo, so we decided to keep it. Also, I can stream music from my media server through the Oppo, which is another great feature. It's connected to a NAD T758, and I feel it is the best media purchase I have ever made. The picture and sound were beyond my expectations. [ eric  Apr 25, 2018 ]
I have a Panasonic V10 54 Plasma TV (1080 p). I have a Pioneer 1016 receiver. I have no problems playin BD discs or dvds. In fact the does a better job than my old Panasonic BD player. I have a friend with an Oppo 203 and 1080 p display. He has played 4K discs and the Oppo 203 was able to send a great picture to his display. [ Michael  Apr 23, 2018 ]
You can play 4K discs if you like but you're only going to get the picture of your weakest link (hdmi cable, receiver, tv, etc...) . In your case you're going to get a great 1080p picture limited only by your display or your display and hdmi cable if you're playing a 4K disc. The oppo does have a seperate audio hdmi out port if you're running surround sound on an older receiver for instance that doesn't have 4K passthrough. That's how I'm utilizing mine to keep the surround sound while still getting the 4K picture. Long story short though the oppo is compatible with dvds, blu-rays, and 4K discs. Hopefully that helps you decide. [ DUSTY  Apr 23, 2018 ]
Hi William, yes you are very focus on your status, try to upgrade all the parts in your home theater before trying to play a 4K movie. Nevertheless you can play a 4K movie in your Oppo-203 and still able to watch it without having a 4K projector as Panasonic PT-AE7000U or PT-AE8000U which are 1080p of course only up to 1080p resolution but see the positive side, you will enjoy the movie. Don't hesitate to buy Oppo-203 best on the market, only better Oppo-205 but don't lose your sleep on that, both are excellent. Plasmas tv are getting behind, once you can buy a real 4K tv, there are a few outstanding out there for selling. Try to see if your receiver it's firmware upgrade able on line, that's the very first step to find out, blessings. [ Juan  Apr 23, 2018 ]
I believe you can. Like connecting any component like CD/DVD component to amp using RCA cables for audio only. [ Manny  Apr 06, 2018 ]
Yes [ STEVEN J  Apr 04, 2018 ]
Yes I have my oppo plugged into the hdmi bluesy port and the out of receiver into my Samsung smartbox and it works great! Picture and sound are awesome. [ BARRY  Apr 03, 2018 ]
To a preamp first or a stereo receiver [ THOMAS  Apr 03, 2018 ]
Yes as long as your amp has RCA type inputs or HDMI. The player has really good audio processing so it should work well. [ STEPHEN  Apr 03, 2018 ]
I believe you can,, in addition to the main HDMI audio/video output, it has a separate HDMI audio only out connection. [ MICHAEL  Mar 17, 2018 ]
Yes, you can. But if you do and you also connect it to network, you would be better off to set it with a TV on initial setup NOT to auto update the firmware! I wasn't aware the auto firmware update is on default and if there is a new firmware available and if you have CD tray out and press the close button, it will assume you agree to update. While it shows the question of screen, it is NOT on the front panel display! Since you are not using a TV, you would not see it. I made that mistake and the player went on to update the firmware without showing anything for a long while that looks like it hangs. If you long push the power button to reset it like I did, you will brick it and the only way to recover is to ship it back to Oppo!! [ Jean  Mar 14, 2018 ]
I would be more than happy to assist, but I did not use the cable that was provide with the Oppo UDP-203. I purchased my own cable. Sorry! [ COL MIKE A  Feb 27, 2018 ]
yes. It's a premium High Speed hdmi cable capable of 18 gbps. It can handle 4K Dolby vision at 60 hz. [ Rajmohan  Feb 27, 2018 ]
Yes [ Oscar  Feb 27, 2018 ]
it should be i have not had any problems with my cable [ Sammie  Feb 27, 2018 ]
No the 203 does not support apps. [ STEVEN J  Feb 20, 2018 ]
Simple answer: "NO". [ Preston  Feb 20, 2018 ]
No, they can't. [ Thomas  Feb 20, 2018 ]
No [ Seany  Feb 20, 2018 ]
Nope...they don't have apps and no plans for apps. Just focused on superior video and audio processing. Prior units did...too many options these days outside of UHD players. You want them to focus on what they do best....and, boy, is this one heckova playrr! [ Robert  Feb 20, 2018 ]
No, there is no media on this device at all. It was a bit of a disappointment as I upgraded from the 103 that had all of it. I'm not sure the reasoning behind it but you will have to use a smart t.v. or other device to get your media. [ STEPHEN  Feb 20, 2018 ]
No! No apps. can be added. [ Karen  Feb 20, 2018 ]
The advantage is that you will be able to use the audio and video processing power. For example, not all the video the 4K capable AppleTV can stream into itself is 4K. So you can get a better picture with that by letting this player process that up to 4K than you would get by letting the AppleTV send that video to the TV. My Bio: [ Paul  Feb 12, 2018 ]  Staff
As of this posting, we do have the Oppo available in our open box inventory for a discount: I hope that helps. My bio: [ Ryan  Feb 07, 2018 ]  Staff
Thanks for your question, Richard! This was actually just recently brought to our attention, and we will be updating our website ASAP to show that both the UDP-203 & 205's HDMI input are HDR/HDR10 compatible (via a firmware update). For more details or to discuss further, please feel free to contact an Advisor directly by phone (888.955.6000) or online chat. Thanks again! :) [ Larry  Dec 11, 2017 ]  Staff
While the player does support PAL content, it does not convert into NTSC. The player is also region coded (Blu-Ray: Region A, DVD: Region 1) so, it will not play copy-protected discs made for use in other markets. [ Ryan  Oct 11, 2017 ]  Staff
I have used that function on several BD disc with perfect resultsEnter [ t  Jan 13, 2018 ]
The feature works for Blu-ray, DVD, DVD-Audio, SACD & CD discs. This is covered on page 31 of the Oppo owner's manual. You can download a copy of the manual by clicking the link for it under the "What's in the Box?" heading on the player's main webpage. I hope that helps. My Bio: [ Ryan  Oct 11, 2017 ]  Staff
Thanks for the answers but I now realize the HDMI input will not pass an HDR signal so it's all a moot point. That makes the 203 much less useful IMO. Streaming through the TV and living with only a 5.1 audio optical link makes the most sense for now. I'll still get a 203 for Blue Ray discs and hopefully Oppo will fix/upgrade the HDMI input in the future. [ kenneth  Jul 18, 2017 ]
You could do this, but you may run into problems with 4K copy protection. If you are getting a new 4K TV with HDR, I assume, AND the new OPPO(which is awesome), why not upgrade your receiver too. You can get all the latest HDCP 2.2 HDMI connections and not spend any more than the cost of the OPPO. Also, the TV should have all the streaming options you need, especially if you go with Samsung or Sony. Happy viewing. [ JAMES  Jul 15, 2017 ]
Well I'm not sure but if have a Dolby Atmos/DTS X set up at home I don't believe you'll get that part of the signal. It's in meta data and accessible through HDMI. Also, the difference is minimal but adds more wires to the connection. [ SCOTT  Jul 13, 2017 ]
Yes, there is a "flaw" in your plan called "Oppo bug"! The HDMI input from time to time stutters on video. When this happen, you have to switch display back to home screen and then switch to HDMI input again to resolve it. Despite all the f/w updates, this bug still exists in both 203 and 205. [ Jean  Jul 13, 2017 ]
No not it all [ JORGE E  Jul 03, 2017 ]
no boss,no amp or jack [ debra  Jul 01, 2017 ]
No, I don't think so. I believe they figured almost every TV coming out these days has that function, so why bother. Go to their website and email them. [ Keith  Jun 15, 2017 ]
I read on a forum that Oppo said no plans to add this to the 203. Maybe for the 205? I think only Oppo can answer this question. [ Wayne  Jun 12, 2017 ]
you would have to ask OPPO if they have any such plans for firmware upgrades as you have described. [ Albert  Jun 12, 2017 ]
Not that I am aware of. [ Joseph  Jun 12, 2017 ]
not in the near future, hopefully ONE DAY [ THOMAS  Jun 12, 2017 ]
Hi Steven: I'm standing exactly at the same spot you are, I have a 105 and two 103 for streaming, Netflix and everything else and two 203 UDP just for 4K discs. I presume Oppo must be working on new models which combine all services at once ! There is no sense going backward tecknologically when launching new models but when you put evething on model 203 performance like ( 4K discs ) then you figure out how accurate and strong should be that uniqhe 4K signal you want to be special, give it some second thoughts ! [ Juan  Jun 12, 2017 ]
Steve, I currently have the udp-203. It has received numerous updates since I've purchased it when it came out. Oppo says they kept it minimalist without streaming services to focus on quick loading and a speedy ui. I have not seen any plans for them to add this on the upd-203 but I am not sure about the 205. It is an excellent player though I highly recommended it. I use my TV for streaming services. [ Dylan  Jun 12, 2017 ]
The company continues to say that they have no plans to add streaming services to either model. That may change, but not what I'm hearing. They say that "[t]he UDP-203 is designed with a purist approach for disc and file playback, and it does not have any built-in video or music streaming apps." My guess is that their decision on that is based in part on other smart devices in your setup covering that need. In my case, both my Tivo and smart TV provide all the streaming apps I need. [ James D.  Jun 12, 2017 ]
Not at this time, nor really planned [ ANDREW  Jun 12, 2017 ]
I don't believe so. It up scales DVDs, and Blu-ray that are played. You'd be better off getting a good receiver that does up scaling. You could play your Dish content though it. [ SCOTT  Jun 05, 2017 ]
I'm not sure why you would need to. Your TV should be able to do that on its own. In theory you could use the HDMI input on the Oppo, and output that way, but again the TV should be able to on its own. [ Kdog  Jun 05, 2017 ]
There is an HDMI input but we don't have anything hooked into that. The oppo is straight to the TV and the sound output to the video receiver because ours does not process 4k [ Patrick A.  Jun 04, 2017 ]
I have mine going to a Marantz AV reciever. This Oppo has some really high end decoding and features so I think it would sound very good going to any decent sound bar/ Sub. I'm very happy with this Oppo player. [ Franklin  May 21, 2017 ]
Sorry,but i don't use a wireless are wired in. [ Mark W.  May 18, 2017 ]
Not as well as it works connected to a REAL sound system! ;) [ Jesse  May 18, 2017 ]
I really don't know about sound bar because I hooked up to my receiver. I don't think there is big difference. You can hook up your sound bar ( subwoofer should be connected to your sound bar) by HDMI, optical or coaxial cable (depends what input you have in your sound bar). Believe me it's the best on the market 4K player and you will love it. [ retmaj1  May 17, 2017 ]
I run mine through a Bose Lifestyle 650 system which utilizes bluetooth Surrounds and Sub Woofer. The sound bar in the system is hardwired. But it works and sounds great. [ William  May 17, 2017 ]
The Oppo dos not offer the ability to stream from online services. It will stream compatible file types from computers/servers on the same local network. You will find this information, and more, by clicking the "Details" tab on the player's main webpage and scrolling down below the "Features & Specs" table. [ Ryan  May 13, 2017 ]  Staff

According to the OPPO website a software update will be available in early 2017. [ Stephen  May 09, 2017 ]
Yes, it will output both at the same time. I use HDMI to receiver and run RCAs to a separate amp to run headphones for family member who is hard of hearingEnter [ t  Jan 13, 2018 ]
I would think so. I use the RCA audio out to connect to my old Nakamichi cassette deck to record CDs playing from Oppo. [ Manny  May 04, 2017 ]
I'm 99% sure that you can. Go to Oppo's website to download the manual to double check.I bought this machine to listen to multichannel music and it rocks! I don't even think of this machine as just a Blu-Ray player but as a universal disc player. I hope this helps. Enjoy. [ Keith  May 03, 2017 ]
Not sure on that situation. Some devices let you use one or the other but not both at same time. Trial and error may be the remedy. [ Mr. Chad L.  May 01, 2017 ]
NO! SPIDIF does not allow for that many channels, the SACD is available analog. [ Preston  May 01, 2017 ]
I only use HDMI for that signal transfer to my receivers. [ Mr. Chad L.  May 01, 2017 ]
The SACD/DSD signal is only available over a hdmi connection. [ Michael  May 01, 2017 ]
Jeffery, I play all my audio through my tube analog CD player. The main reason I purchased this player is to play 4K video disk, in which this player is remarkable. Just check the specs on it, I am sure this player should have have that capability, but check to be safe with a Crutchfield Rep. hope this helps. [ John  Apr 20, 2017 ]
It would not decode HDCD. Only play them as regular CDs. [ Jean  Apr 20, 2017 ]
I am unfamiliar with HDCDs. But the user guide does not list them as compatible. [ Robin  Apr 20, 2017 ]
yes it will [ todd  Apr 14, 2017 ]
yes! this is a very nice sacd playing unit , Thank you i'm very happy with it. [ roddy  Mar 29, 2017 ]
Yes it will send all audio formats in what ever amount of channels there are. Your receiver has to be able to decode the format. For SACDs if your receiver does not decode DSD then you will have to use PCM. I believe you set that in the Oppo set up menu in the audio setup. This is a great player. I have owned two previous Oppo's an SE8300 and a Bdp 95. Steve [ Steve  Mar 27, 2017 ]
Yes it does, shows as multi DSD or stereo DSD signal on my Denon [ Michael  Mar 27, 2017 ]
hi alan this is mike and yes it does play sacd thru hdmi,i have a good collection of sacds and it plays them perfectly thru hdmi. [ debra  Mar 27, 2017 ]
I believe the optical is limited to band width. I think optical only goes up to 96k sample rate. HDMI may go to 192K sample rate at 24bit. Steve P [ Steve  Mar 28, 2017 ]
Optical connection I believe transfers high quality signals using light(LED ?) via fiber optics. Should be as good as HDMI connection or better. [ Manny  Mar 14, 2017 ]
Fiber optic cable is a different way of sending the information from the player to the receiver or tv. Bursts of light, instead of electrical signals are used to communicate the information. The benefit is said to be that light it will cause no distortion or interference with othe devices nor can it be interfered with by othe electrical signals. Before hdmi connections, it was considered a gold standard. The oppo allows you to choose what connection works best for your system. I am using both the fiber optic and the 7.1 analogue audio output for my system, and I switch back and forth depending on what kind of source material, e.g., 5.1 Dolby digital or 7.1 HD. [ Michael  Mar 13, 2017 ]
Optical connection is to be used ( just audio signal ) with old model amplifier which doesn't hold Hdmi in & out for HDMI cables. This is for old models, connect audio from optical Oppo-203 output to the optical input on the back of the amplifier. The rest is easy, just speakers cable from the amplifier to the speakers. [ Juan  Mar 13, 2017 ]
You can download the user manual here. Check out page 16 and 59. There's a lot of information than I can write here. [ Wayne  Mar 13, 2017 ]
It is missing a programming feature! This is quite annoying- programming Titles on DVDs made it a lot easier to find the hidden stuff and watch everything in one sitting without messing with the remote. [ Jesse  May 18, 2017 ]
Sorry, I just use this player for 4k video, since I did a lot of soul searching spending the money. This player performs more than I expected 4k wise. I use tube anolog equipment for my audio with a tube CD player. [ John  Mar 08, 2017 ]
From Page 21 of the user guide, with respect to disk playback: Program Play: Play the tracks in the preferred sequence (only available with CD playback). [ Robin  Mar 08, 2017 ]
Thanks for your question. For information on comparing two or more models I would recommend reaching out to an Advisor by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat. Thanks for your question. Crutchfield does take into account any connections on the rear. This helps with making sure it will fit in certain cabinets. So the manufacturers spec would be the chassis only. Hope this helps. [ Kenny  Feb 07, 2017 ]  Staff
The rack from the older 103 will fit. I've done it [ Kdog  Jun 05, 2017 ]
No, I'm sorry I don't believe there is one. I looked on their website and haven't found any mention of one. You can or course contact them yourself. [ SCOTT  Feb 01, 2017 ]
The kits are sold separately but I believe you have to buy the kit from oppo. [ michael  Feb 01, 2017 ]
The Oppo UDP-203 is capable of upscaling SD or HD resolution content *up to* 4K resolution. So if you're using a TV that only accepts resolutions up to 1080p, you can set the output resolution to 1080p in the UDP-203's menu in order to upscale your DVD discs to 1080p HD. If you would like to discuss further, feel free to contact an Advisor directly by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat. I hope that helps! [ Larry  Jan 30, 2017 ]  Staff
There's nothing specifically stating compatibility with VCD's on the Oppo UDP-203. It will only work with the following type of CD & DVD discs: CD-Audio, SACD, CD-R, CD-RW, Kodak Picture CD; DVD-Video, DVD-Audio, DVD-R (DL), DVD-RW, DVD+R (DL), DVD+RW.
