About the Bowers & Wilkins P7 Wireless

Jeff Miller

Wireless twist on a modern classic

Even before I opened the Bowers & Wilkins P7 Wireless over-ear headphones, I had a feeling they would be special. After all, they boast the same eye-catching design and ear-pleasing soundstage as the company's beloved wired version. And the addition of Bluetooth frees you from the connecting cord, allowing you to play music and take calls wirelessly from your phone. Still, I was struck by the great care B&W put into these headphones — evident in the unboxing experience alone.

Bowers and Wilkins P7 Wireless

The Bower & Wilkins P7 Wireless headphones make a powerful visual statement.

Solid, sophisticated look and feel

Opening the P7 Wireless headphones was sort of like unwrapping a gift. I forced myself to take time with it. Each slight peak, reveal, and even satisfying waft of genuine leather helped build anticipation for the neatly folded headphones inside.

The first thing that jumped out was the smooth, curved aluminum pieces that link the sturdy headband and earcups. Sheepskin leather is stitched on the padded headband and lines the plush, rectangular earpads. They rested comfortably around my ears, helping relax the firm grip.

Potent sound nimbly adapts to your tunes

The tight fit keeps these headphones from moving around, and also ensures the meticulously designed drivers point properly to your ears. They produce full sound that can be either spacious or intimate, depending on the music. On the jam band Twiddle's "Every Soul," an entire virtual live show sprawled out in front of me, like I was about 10 rows back. The P7s had a relaxed feel, and by the time the keyboards kicked in, my head was out of my day-to-day and temporarily bobbing at a festival.

On the flip side, Vince Staples' EP Prima Donna uses deep, funky bass lines, muffled samples, and crunching percussion to create almost a claustrophic, introverted vibe. The B&W P7 Wireless delivered a soundstage that was appropriately tight and close. Reverb from the beats seemed to rattle off the "room" around me. The raw-sounding vocals came through like I was there in the booth, punctuating the "ripped-from-a-personal-journal" nature of Staples' lyrics and delivery.

Features

Overview: The Bowers & Wilkins (B&W) P7 wireless over-ear headphones retain the classic styling of the original P7s, with the leather ear pads and detachable cables. The P7 wireless features Bluetooth version 4.1 for superior audio and wireless convenience. The P7 wireless headphones come with a 4' audio cable to use when you want to save battery life or when you can't use Bluetooth, a USB charging cable, and a leather storage case with magnetic closures.

Bluetooth 4.1: The P7 wireless headphones uses Bluetooth 4.1 and AptX for streaming high fidelity audio from your smartphone, tablet, or computer. The headphones are powered by a rechargeable Lithium battery that is charged via USB with the supplied Micro USB cable. With a 3 hour full charge, the P7 Wireless can deliver up to 17 hours of music playback at average volume levels. Once paired, the P7s will remember up to eight source devices.

Ear Cups and Drivers: The P7 wireless headphones feature 40mm dynamic drivers that work more like a driver in a hi-fi speaker. The headphones are tuned by sound engineers, so they sound as good as they look. The removable magnetic ear pads allow you to connect the cable, or replace the pads if they gets damaged. These luxurious sheep's leather ear pads with an optimized grille pattern to allow the air to move freely through the pads for minimal acoustic impedance.

Folding Design: The ear cups swivel so you can fold them flat for compact storage in the supplied soft leather case.

Cable: The B&W P7 wireless headphones come with a 48" audio cable. The headphone cable has a unique curved terminal on the headphone end that plugs in under the left earcup. The 2.5mm sub-mini plug rests in a contoured jack to protect the terminal and prevents accidental disconnection. The 3.5mm miniplug features a slim connector (less than 1/4" in diameter) that allows you to plug into your portable music device, even when it's housed in a hard protective case. A 48" Micro USB cable is provided for firmware updates, service, and charging the battery from a laptop or USB charging device.

On-board Controls: The on-board controls on the back of the right ear cup let you raise and lower the volume, and control the music playback (play, pause, next track, previous track) while you're in active mode (using Bluetooth). The controls will not operate when used in passive (wired) mode. The P7 Wireless headphones also have two microphones for clear phone conversations.

Specifications:

  • Frequency Response: 10Hz to 20kHz
  • Impedance: 22 ohms (passive)
  • Distortion (THD): <0.3% (1 kHz/10 mW)
  • Sensitivity: 111 dB/V at 1 kHz
  • Maximum Input Power: 50 mW

Q
Is a portable amp required to get the best sound from the P7 wireless headphones? If so, how is it connected?

A
Hey, RCMoto...no, you definitely don't need one. Let me tell you this, I had the same question as you and here's what I found out: 1. It depends on what type of media player you connect it to (I had the Sony zx-2, which has a "warm" sound, so the headphones sound bassier than before), 2. The type of files you listen to...the better quality files (FLAC, Apple lossless, or better) the more clarity and stronger the sound...mp3s will sound muddy and muffled and therefore, give the impression that the headphones are not as clear or bassy. 3. Wired vs wireless. In my opinion, they both sound the same; although, you want your device to have "apt x" on it and you definitely want your headphones to have aptx as well...it helps with the overall frequency response and the sound is sharper, fuller and the low end is well maintained. I think, and I have had quite a few wireless and wired headphones, but the p7 wireless is without a doubt the best sounding headphones to date! I hope this helps a little. Please feel free to contact me anytime, if/when you have questions. Enjoy!

I am using the headphones with FiiO X7 and they require no amp. They are fine with no amp.

The P7 sound great by themselves even over Bluetooth.

What kind of wireless head phone amp Do you have or have you seen. The purpose of any amp is to improve the sound quality by reducing noise especially at higher volumes. The amp will drive the 40mm speaker in the P7 more efficiently then internal via Bluetooth from the source device. The sound quality of the P7 wireless was adequate at medium volumes is why I bought this brand. The Bluetooth option is for convenience more that sound quality. For portable sound quality I use my customized 1964 A6 with the interchangeable mic cable. Sound quality is better via wired versus wireless. Ian considering having custom cables made with a mic.

Sure you could use a preamp but you would need to plug directly into the p7 using a cable they provide.

I can't speak for the sound quality of the wireless version using a wire, however, I can say that the sound was better wireless than several other Bluetooth headphones including the senheiser momentem and bang and olafsen h7s
