KEF Q950 floor-standing speaker

An expanded view of the Uni-Q driver assembly shows the careful design and construction that go into making each Q950.

A room-filling "sweet spot," thanks to Uni-Q® technology

KEF's patented Uni-Q technology places the Q950's 1-1/2" aluminum dome tweeter into the acoustic center of the cabinet's topmost 8" woofer. This concentric design allows sound to originate from a single point source, making the speaker's "sweet spot" (the ideal listening position) much larger.

I've had the pleasure of hearing Uni-Q technology in person many times. Even when sitting off to the side or in the back of our listening room, I've enjoyed detailed, three-dimensional sound. You can expect the same in your home with a pair of the '950s.

Ideal for music, movies, and more

The speaker's 8" Uni-Q driver is joined by a separate 8" woofer dedicated to reproducing low frequencies. These two woofers team up with a pair of 8" passive radiators to deliver accurate, punchy bass with your favorite albums, movies, sports broadcasts, and video game soundtracks.

Optional magnetic grille available separately.

Part of a complete KEF Q surround sound system

The KEF Q Series features an array of speakers that are voice-matched for compatibility in an immersive surround sound system:

Product Research

Features

Uni-Q Driver Array: At the heart of the Q Series loudspeaker is the Uni-Q driver array. This signature innovation by KEF places the tweeter in the acoustic center of the midrange cone, with both drivers acting as a single point source. The result is a more detailed, accurate three-dimensional sound image, which is dispersed more evenly throughout the room than is possible with any conventional speaker. The Uni-Q driver array is made up of a 1.5" aluminum dome tweeter and a 8.0" aluminum midrange driver.

  • 1.5" Aluminum Dome Tweeter: At the center of the Uni-Q driver array is a 1.5" aluminum dome tweeter that utilizes KEF's "tangerine" waveguide over the tweeter dome for ultra-wide dispersion. Further enhancements to the 1" aluminum dome tweeter is a damped loading tube and a cone-neck de-coupler. The damped tweeter loading tube reduces any harshness in the lower treble frequencies by gently terminating the sound produced from the rear. The cone-neck de-coupler reduces output in the cone breakup region to improve high frequency performance.
  • 8.0" Aluminum Midrange Driver: The Uni-Q driver array's 8.0" midrange driver features an aluminum cone structure that has been engineered to reduce cone breakup and improve midrange performance. The driver's optimized suspension allows more movement, better controlled excursion, and lower distortion for accurate bass performance. As well as allowing the driver's cone its full extension, KEF's ingenious Z-flex surround guides the sound from the tweeter across the surround without any disturbance or secondary radiation.

Isolated Sealed Uni-Q Chamber: The Uni-Q driver array is isolated in a closed chamber inside the speaker cabinet to reduce distortions. The closed box midrange cabinet design reduces the load on the Uni-Q midrange cone, increasing clarity and detail while delivering cleaner, punchier bass.

Low-Frequency Woofer + Dual Auxiliary Bass Radiators (ABR): The Uni-Q driver array is paired with a 8.0" low frequency woofer and dual Auxiliary Bass Radiators (ABR). The same aluminum cone found in the Uni-Q's midrange driver is also used in the bass woofer and dual ABRs for excellent low-distortion midbass/bass performance. The woofer's vented magnet assembly on a rigid metal chassis and 50mm voice coil offers incredible power handling, while the new rubber rear suspension of the ABRs provides greater excursion and a lower tuning frequency so that the speaker can play deeper and louder. Both types of drivers feature a large roll surround that allows a longer throw with less distortion at high sound pressure levels.

Sleek Cabinet Design: The sculpted Q Series finish epitomizes KEF's approach with seamless, sleek cabinets unblemished by visible fittings and joints. Q Series speakers are coated with a fine satin finish with matching driver colors. If you wish to conceal the drivers, an optional magnetically attached speaker grille (see Accessories Tab) is available and sold separately.

Gold-Plated Binding Post Terminals: On the rear of the speaker cabinet is a pair of heavy-duty, gold-plated binding post terminals that will accept bare wire (up to 10AWG), pin-connectors, spade-lugs, and banana plugs (single only). Plastic inserts must be removed from the binding posts to use banana plugs.

Outrigger Feet w/ Spikes: The included outrigger feet and spikes provide a larger, more stable footprint with greater stability. The outrigger feet screw into the bottom of the speaker cabinet, while the spikes screw into the bottom of the outrigger feet using the supplied hardware. Once the outrigger feet and spikes are installed and the speaker is positioned, the spikes can be adjusted from the top of the outrigger feet to make sure the speaker is level with your floor.

  • Dimensions w/ Outrigger Feet & Spikes: 14.25" (w) x 43.9375" (h) x 12.375" (d)
  • Dimensions w/ Outrigger Feet Only: 14.25" (w) x 42.625" (h) x 12.375" (d)
Notes:
  • The spikes are designed for carpeted flooring. These spikes can cause damage to hardwood, tile, laminate, and vinyl flooring (there are no rubber feet included).
  • The speaker should not be used without the outrigger feet installed for stability and performance reasons.
  • A pair of speakers should be positioned 6' to 10' apart. They can be "toed-in" or angled inward toward the main listening area to improve stereo imaging and soundstage.

Q
Kef q950 or wharfedale evo 4.3?
carlos  Sep 12, 2023
1 answer
A
There is a lot of personal preference here, Carlos. Both speakers are exceptional as far as sound quality, with the KEF Q950 playing crisp and surgical with excellent stereo separation. The Wharfedale's have a slightly less high frequency response, so they will sound a tad smoother in comparison. I was a big fan of both of these speakers when we tested them. If you tend to like a crisper sound, lean in on a pair of the KEF Q950's!

Q
Can you install these on hardwood floors?
brian  Dec 02, 2022
1 answer
A
You absolutely can Brian, but you do want to be able to protect your hardwood from the KEF Q950's spiked feet. I would advise grabbing a pair of these Pangea Audio Sonic Saucers in the link below. These are the extra-large size, they will protect your hardwood from scratches, and they also isolate the speaker for enhanced sound performance. It's a triple win! These come four to a pack (enough for one speaker). https://www.crutchfield.com/S-WyPG3jlwvqN/p_991Q950B/KEF-Q950-Black.html

Q
I am looking to upgrade my speakers froms sx80's to the Kef q950. Is my Cambridge Audio AXR100 a good match for the kef Q950 ?
john  May 14, 2022
7 answers
A
I have the Cambridge AXR100 driving two Kef A950's. its an awesome set up unless you want to play your music crazy loud (like I do sometimes)) if you do this, the AXR will clip after about 10 minutes of play. if you don't ever plan on having the volume set at 11, you'll be more than satisfied!!!!! I just added a 200w amp and now I can blow my eardrums out.
matt  May 16, 2022
A
This is my first venture back into hi-fidelity in a long while. I've always had a Yamaha amp, so I wouldn't feel qualified to give a opinion on the Cambridge match. As far as the speakers go, I couldn't be more pleased. They have met all my expectations and were most certainly the right choice for my listening pleasure.
david  May 15, 2022
A
I can't speak to the match, but it is hard for me to magine these speakers sounding anything but superb in any set up. I rock a tube rig.
trevor  May 15, 2022
A
I bought a pair of Q950s been listening for 3 months now, it's highly powered with 250 WPC. I am satisfied and happy with the speakers and performance. It's a big speaker so I would power it with ad much amp as you can afford.
danny joseph  May 14, 2022
A
I think it would be fine. I purchased a Marantz SR6015, which is 110 wpc (in 2 channel mode) and it suffices. However, I did purchase a separate 2 channel 205 wpc amp to power them because I'm using them more in a surround system. They do sound amazing!
toby d  May 14, 2022
A
The Q950's are much more efficient than the sx80's - your AXR100 should have zero trouble driving them. My Marantz AVR sports 110 per channel x2 which gets whittled down a fair bit as I am driving 9 channels. I don't have a real need for more power.
bradley  May 14, 2022
A
The Q950's are fairly efficient .. your amp should have more than enough oomph to drive them.
robert  May 14, 2022
Q
Which would you recommend, the B&W 704 S2 or the Kef Q950?
chris  Nov 02, 2020
1 answer
A
Yes, I recommend the Bowers & Wilkins 704 S2 for their sound quality,

Q
I have a 65 watt sansui amplifier which requires 8 ohm speakers will this be a fit for the Q950?
robert  Sep 29, 2022
1 answer
A
You could certainly go with an even more powerful amplifier with these KEF speakers, but many of the older/vintage amps/receivers were very conservatively rated for power, so your existing amp should pair well with the Q950 speakers.

Q
KEF q950 or SVS Ultra towers?
anthony  Dec 02, 2021
3 answers
A
I have the 950's and have not heard the Ultra's. I love my 950's. They sound great for music and movies. Have heard great things about the Ultras but you will need the right space for them. Due to design, placement needs to be right. They also need some power to get everything out of them.
jason  Dec 02, 2021
A
If you can listen to them. Especially with the amplifier you will use. The SVS has a strong bass response that can be tamed. The KEF needs a brighter amp. In my view KEF Q950 and a maranta amp are a no go. Too smoothed off music reproduction. My comments relate to playing music.
john  Dec 02, 2021
A
I had the same question when I bought the q950's. I don't think my room had enough room behind for the Ultras if I remember correctly. But, the Q950's are sooo good. I am very satisfied.

Q
I have a older Mac. Power amp 2125, is 125 watts enough to power these speakers to there full potential?
mike  Oct 25, 2021
1 answer
A
You'd have no problem driving the Q950s with that amp. They are rather efficient speakers.
robert  Oct 26, 2021
Q
Would the Parasound HINT 6 Halo Integrated Amplifier be a good match with these speakers?
jeff  Nov 17, 2020
1 answer
A
Yes. I believe that is 160w/ch. These speakers really need at least that o drive them. I just added a Legacy Monobloc 2 to my Yamaha RXA 3080. The 325 w/ch made a HUGE difference!
