MP3 Playback: The KD-SX990 can play MP3 files that have been recorded on CD-ROM, CD-R and CD-RW discs. There is no particular bit-rate constraint, but 128 kbps or higher is recommended. The disc must be recorded in one of the following formats: ISO 9660 Level 1/Level 2, Joliet or Romeo. During MP3 playback, the unit will display any recorded ID3 (version 1) tag information. You can directly access folders numbered 01-12 (they must be assigned two-digit numbers when recorded). This unit can handle a maximum number of 289 folders and files. Any surplus folders or files will be disregarded. Note: This unit will not play WMA files recorded on any discs.
CD Text: This unit will display artist, disc title and track title information when playing a disc with CD Text.
Direct Track Access: You can directly access CD tracks 1-12 by pressing the station preset buttons. If a preset button is pressed for less than 1 second, the track corresponding to the number on the preset button is selected (for tracks 1-6). When a preset button is pressed for more than 1 second, the track corresponding to the number above the preset button is accessed (for tracks 7-12).
+10/-10 Buttons: When selecting CD tracks or an MP3 file within a folder, you can jump ahead or jump back to the nearest track/file number that is a multiple of 10 by using the "+10" or "-10" buttons. For example, when selecting track/file 32 from track/file 6, you can press the "+10" button three times (>10, >20, >30) to get to 30, then the "track up" button twice (>31, >32) to get to track/file 32.
Disc Eject Prohibit: This feature keeps the disc from ejecting even if the eject button is pushed. The disc eject prohibit feature is engaged/disengaged by pressing the CD and Attenuate buttons simultaneously for more than 2 seconds.
Custom Equalizer (C-EQ): This unit has six preset tone control and loudness setting combinations that you may select. Each of the sound modes may be adjusted to your preference and stored in memory. The preset Custom Equalizer modes are:
- Rock: Bass = +3, Treble = +1, Loudness = On
- Classic: Bass = +1, Treble = -2, Loudness = Off
- Pops: Bass = +4, Treble = +1, Loudness = Off
- Hip Hop: Bass = +2, Treble = 0, Loudness = On
- Jazz: Bass = +2, Treble = +3, Loudness = Off
- User: Bass = 0, Treble = 0, Loudness = Off
Preferred Setting Mode: You can access the Preferred Setting Mode (PSM) menu to change the general settings of the receiver. The PSM allows you to set the clock, choose the level meter display, set the dimmer mode, turn on/off the beep tones, set the CD text/ID3 tag scrolling mode, choose the type of external component to be connected, adjust the auxiliary input level, and turn on/off the ID3 tag display.
Level Meter: There is a level meter in the right part of the display window. The level meter may be set to Audio 1, Audio 2, or Off. In Audio 1 mode, the meter gives a graphic representation of the audio signal level. In Audio 2 mode, the meter alternates between Audio 1 mode and illumination display. While making volume, balance and fader adjustments, the meter gives a graphic representation of the setting.
Dimmer: This unit is equipped with a wire that JVC calls an illumination lead, however, it acts as a dimmer lead. The dimmer can be set to OFF (normal brightness at all times), AUTO (display window automatically dims when your car head lights are turned on), or ON (display is always dimmed). Note that the amount of dimming is fixed, it cannot be adjusted, and the illumination wire must be connected for AUTO operation.
Clock Display: While playing a CD, you can switch between the clock display and the CD elapsed time display. While listening to the radio you can switch between the clock display and the station frequency display. When you press the Display button during power off, the unit will turn on, display the clock for 5 seconds, then shut off. This can be done with the ignition on or off.
One-Touch Operation: Pressing a source button (CD, FM or AM) turns the unit on and selects the source.
HS-II Tuner: This model is equipped with JVC's proprietary HS-II tuner, which has the ability to eliminate undesirable noise in weak FM signals, and to suppress distortion due to interference from adjacent stations.
Standard and European Tuning Spacing: The tuner allows you to select U.S. standard or European tuning spacing. This feature is not discussed in the manual, but it is easily accessible. To switch the tuning spacing, you simply press and hold the FM button and preset #5 button simultaneously for approximately 3 seconds.
Auxiliary Inputs: The KD-SX990 gives you the ability to add two separate auxiliary sources. This unit has a female mini-jack (labeled MP3 Input) on the front panel for connecting an auxiliary source, such as a portable MP3 or MiniDisc player. You can adjust the volume of the external source (+1 to +5) if it is not high enough. You can add a second auxiliary source through the CD changer input by using an optional adapter (item 105KSU57--sold separately). Since the optional adapter connects to the CD changer input on this unit, you cannot simultaneously connect a CD changer.
RM-RK50 Remote Control: The unit is equipped with the RM-RK50 keychain-style wireless remote control. The dimensions of the remote are: L=2.667", W=1.257", D=0.607". This 9-button remote can control the following functions:
- Volume Up/Down
- Power On/Off
- Source select
- Mute On/Off
- Custom EQ settings
- Track skip (CD + changer)
- Track search forward/reverse (CD + changer)
- Radio station search
- Preset station select
- Radio band select
- Disc skip (CD changer)
Compatibility: The KD-SX990 is compatible with JVC MP3-compatible changers (such as 257CHX1500) as well as other CH-X series non-MP3 changers (except CH-X99 and CH-X100). KD-MK-series changers are not compatible, even with an adapter.
Changer Controls: In addition to basic disc navigation features, this unit has the following changer controls: use of +10/-10 buttons for locating tracks/files, direct disc access, disc intro scan, folder intro scan, track/file intro scan, track repeat, folder repeat, disc repeat, folder random, disc random, and magazine (all disc) random.
