2GB digital voice recorder with expandable memory
Our take on the Olympus DS-2500 by Crutchfield's Ralph Graves
If you work in a law office, medical center, or other business that requires dictation and transcription, the Olympus DS-2500 is a great solution. This professional-grade voice recorder captures audio in highly compressed DSS (Digital Speech Standard) format — designed to record voices accurately. And it does so with the same clarity as Olympus' larger professional dictation systems.
Expandable memory and easy connection
The recorder has 2GB of built-in memory, enough for 303 hours of basic-quality recordings. But if you need more, just insert a microSD card into the player and keep recording. And transfer is simple. The DS-2500 has its own USB connector and included recharging cable.
The voice-activation mode lets you make convenient, hands-free recordings. Simply select what you want to record, such as lectures, music, or personal memos, and Scene Select automatically adjusts the recording levels for you. You can adjust the sensitivity of the built-in mono microphone to ensure optimal voice recording.

Overview: The Olympus DS-2500 is a compact, hand-held portable digital voice recorder with features found in professional dictation systems. The recorder records onto SD memory cards (a 2 GB card is included) for hours of recording time. It has a built-in microphone, a 23mm diameter mono speaker, and jacks for an external microphone and headphones. The DS-2500 operates on two "AAA" Ni-MH rechargeable batteries (included). It can also work with alkaline batteries.
LCD Display: The DS-2500 features a 1-5/8" (diagonal) backlit, monochrome LCD display which indicates recording and playback information. The recorder will display the elapsed or remaining recording time in hours, minutes, and seconds. When not recording, the current time can be displayed. You can set the display contrast to one of 12 levels, and the backlight duration is approximately 10 seconds.
Date and Time: The recorder features a built-in clock. If you have set the time and date, information as to when a sound file was recorded is stored automatically with that file.
Built-in Microphone: The unit features a built-in microphone on the top of the recorder. You can set the recording level to Dictation, a low-sensitivity mode for close-up recording, and Conference, a high-sensitivity mode that records distant sounds in all directions. In addition to the built-in microphones, the recorder also has a 3.5mm external microphone input.
Memory Card Slot: The DS-2500 has no built-in memory, but has a slot for SD memory cards. The slot will accept SD and SDHC memory cards from 512 MB to 32 GB. A 2 GB SD card is included.
USB Port: The DS-2500 has a Mini-B 2.0 USB port at the bottom to let you connect the unit to your computer for transferring files or charging (when using the rechargeable batteries). The unit is Hi-speed USB 2.0-compatible, and can work with the following Operating Systems: Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows XP, and Mac OS X (v10.4.11-v10.7).
Power Requirements: The recorder is powered by two "AAA"-sized Nickel-Metal Hydride (NiMH) batteries (included). The batteries charge via USB in approximately 3 hours. Fully-charged batteries provide approximately 40 hours of battery life when recording in QP mode, 50 hours in SP mode, and 48 hours in playback mode (with earphones). An optional A514 AC adapter is available for charging the batteries.
Power Save: The Power Save function switches the unit to Standby after a preset amount of time without a button being pressed. You can set the Power Save duration to 5 minutes, 10 minutes, 30 minutes, 1 hour, or Off.
Recording Format: The DS-2500 records audio files in the DS2 format, the Digital Speech Standard Pro (DSS Pro). There are two Recording Modes: QP for higher quality recordings and SP for maximum recording time:
|Recording Mode |
|Maximum Recording Time (Hours)|
|2 GB SD |
|4 GB |
|8 GB |
|16 GB |
|32 GB |
|QP (16kHz)||200Hz to 7kHz||148||290||588||1178||2363|
|SP (12kHz)||200Hz to 5kHz||303||595||1205||2413||4843|
File Structure: The DS-2500 features five folders that will hold up to 200 files each, for a total of 1000 recordings.
VCVA Function: You can set the DS-2500 to automatically start recording when it picks up sound and shut off when the sound stops. The Variable Control Voice Actuator (VCVA) lets you adjust the volume level threshold for starting and stopping recording. The VCVA level can be set to any of 15 different values.
Recording Options: There are other options when recording voice files:
- Append: The recording starts at the end of the current file.
- Overwrite: You can overwrite a previously recorded file from any point within the file.
- Insert: Additional recording can be inserted into a previously recorded file.
Playback Speed: You can adjust the playback speed as you desire; slowing it down to review spots you couldn't understand, or speeding it up to listen to meeting content at a faster speed. Each time you press the Speed button, you can switch between Normal Playback, Slow Playback (-50%), or Fast Playback (+50%).
Index Marks: Setting an index mark lets you quickly find a location you want to listen to while fast forwarding or fast rewinding. Up to 32 index marks can be placed on a single file.
Erase: You can erase your recorded messages one by one, or all messages in a folder at one time.
Protect Files: To prevent a file from being accidentally erased or edited, you can protect an important file. When a file is protected, it is regarded as a read-only file. Protection can be released, if desired.
Hold Function: The DS-2500 has a Hold function that will lock the buttons to prevent accidental operations. The Hold function is activated by sliding the power switch to the right.
DSS Player Software: The included DSS Player software helps you manage your files on your computer. Once the software has been loaded to your computer, the DSS Player application automatically starts when you connect the device. In addition, new dictation files are automatically downloaded when the device is connected. The software is compatible with the following Operating Systems:
- Windows: XP (SP2/SP3), Vista (SP2), 7
- Mac: OS X 10.4.11 to 10.7

We have not received any answers from other customers on your question. I do not see a listing for a cue/review function. However, I would recommend reaching out to an Advisor by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat. They should be able to confirm for you. [ Jeff Mar 14, 2014 ] Staff
