About the Auralex® SonoLite™ Bass Trap

Steve Kindig

Hear less boom and more real bass

The Auralex SonoLite Bass Trap is a 3" thick, 2-foot-square fabric-wrapped sound absorption panel. It's designed to be used as a "corner trap," providing low-frequency control when placed horizontally in a corner at the juncture of two walls, or vertically where a wall meets the ceiling or floor. Compared to similar products, Auralex's Bass Trap is a more cost-effective and visually appealing way to alleviate the problems of uneven, muddy, or boomy bass.

Low-frequency control for your listening room, studio, or home theater

One of the basic facts of room acoustics is that low frequency sounds tend to gather at the room's boundaries, and especially in the corners. That creates uneven low-frequency response — some frequencies are boosted while others are diminished. You can easily hear this unevenness just by walking around your room and standing in the corners or next to the walls.

Each SonoLite Bass Trap is made of Auralex's extra-dense Studiofoam acoustic foam, which is then wrapped on the front and sides with thin, stylish velour fabric. The back of the Bass Trap is angled on the sides so you can wedge it snugly between two room boundaries. Once in place, the Bass Trap forms a triangle with either two walls or a wall and the floor or ceiling, creating an air pocket behind the panel. The combination of the 3"-thick foam and the air pocket absorbs frequencies from 100Hz up without attenuating the deep bass frequencies that add so much to music and movie soundtracks.

Taking the measure of a sound absorber

The Auralex SonoLite Bass Trap has an NRC rating of .55 at 125Hz and 1.0 at 250Hz. NRC (Noise Reduction Coefficient) is the most common spec listed with sound absorbing products, and represents the amount of energy absorbed when sound strikes a surface. An NRC of 0 indicates 100% reflection, while an NRC of 1.0 indicates 100% absorption. For more information on sound absorption, check out our room acoustics article.

Product Research

Features

Bass Trap Acoustical Panel: The Auralex Bass Trap acoustic panel optimizes low frequency performance resulting in highly effective control preventing bass build-up and cancellation that mask your room's true low-frequency character.

Construction: The core of the SonoLite Bass Trap panel consists of Auralex's high performance StudioFoam acoustical foam which is covered in a velour fabric. Available in stylish black or tan velour fabric.

StudioFoam: StudioFoam is a melamine-free acoustical foam with a Class A fire rating, per ASTM E84. StudioFoam offers durability & affordability, while also delivering outstanding acoustical performance with an overall NRC of 1.15. Its proprietary chemical formulation prevents StudioFoam from rot, crumbling, or suffering surface harm from normal use like other alternatives.

Low Frequency Sound Waves: Low frequency sound waves are extremely long, very strong and the toughest to control. This is true no matter whether you're attempting to block their transmission to a neighboring space or trying to absorb them to clean up the low frequency response within a room. Controlling low frequency sound is harder than controlling mid or high frequency sound and generally requires more effort and expense. This is where the SonoLite Bass Trap acoustical panel comes into play. The SonoLite Bass Trap adds low-end control for your listening environment.

Mounting Options: The SonoLite Bass Trap panel is designed to be mounted in the corner of two connecting walls. EZ-Stick Pro mounting tabs are included.

I have a single SVS SB16-Ultra Subwoofer. it's placed almost in the center of my two Klipsch Heritage Speakers. Your suggestions on proper wall placement of the AuraLex SonoLite Bass Trap?

The placement of any acoustic treatments will be 100% dependent upon your room and its interaction with the sound pressure you add with your speakers. That said, generally, you would want to place bass traps spanning corners, as they need the airspace behind them to help manage the low frequency waves. If you mount them flat on the wall somewhere, you may find it improves the sound...but that won't be because it's managing bass waves; it may be improving some other attribute, like reverb, echo, etc. I have a terrible room for HiFi but it sounds great now, as I have about 20 panels and traps of various types. I have two REL subs, BTW. I started by treating the corners with traps, including the ceiling/wall intersections. Managing first reflection points is very important too, if you haven't done that yet.

The SonoLite Bass Traps are 3 inches thick. The corners are beveled to span a corner. I have used them in a couple of places and they do help.

Q
How much surface of a wall should be covered with the noise absorption panels? The full wall or just patches?

I don't expect that you will need to completely cover your walls with these panels and just need to install them in patches My Bio: https://www.crutchfield.com/bio/Paul
