Our take on the Shure BETA 58A by Crutchfield's Ken Nail
High output BETA Series mics
Shure has been setting the standard for audio for over 80 years. They engineered their BETA® Series mics to provide powerful output and resistance to feedback, and their rugged construction ensures they'll stand up to the tough conditions you'll find on the road.
A vocal standard
The Shure 58A features a hardened steel mesh grille for protection.
Shure's BETA 58A vocal microphone is equally at home on stage or in the studio. The mic of choice for many vocal artists and touring groups, the BETA 58A features a frequency curve that's optimized for close-up performances, and boasts a supercardioid pattern that rejects outside noise. This upgraded version of the legendary Shure SM 58 was made for life on the road, with a steel mesh grille and an integrated shock system that can take some serious punishment.

Overview: The Shure Beta 58A is a precision-engineered professional microphone for live sound reinforcement and studio recording. It has a tailored, smooth frequency response, tuned specifically for vocal applications. The Beta 58A comes with a swiveling stand mount, a 5/8"-to-3/8" thread adapter, and a zippered carrying bag.
Pickup Pattern: The Beta 58A has a supercardioid polar pattern, which picks up the most sound from directly in front and sides of the microphone. It features a tailored low-frequency roll-off, which helps the performer take advantage of the proximity effect, while preventing explosive low-frequency sound during close-up use. Its greatest sound rejection is at 120° toward the rear of the microphone, where monitors should be placed. A microphone/monitor locator is included to help you properly position the monitors.
Construction: The microphone has a silver blue painted die-cast metal handle. The hardened steel mesh ball grill protects the internal elements, and resists wear and abuse. Inside the grille is an integrated "pop" filter that reduces explosive breath sounds and wind noise.
Mounting: The Beta 58A comes with a swiveling stand mount, which provides a secure mount to a floor stand or a boom stand. The microphone slips into the swivel mount, which lets you tilt the microphone forward or backward over 180°. A 5/8"-to-3/8" thread adapter is included for alternate mounts.
Connector: The Shure Beta 58A has a 3-pin male XLR connector. No microphone cable is included in this package.
- Frequency Response: 50Hz - 15kHz
- Directional Polar Pattern: Supercardioid
- Output Impedance: 150 ohms (EIA rated)
- Sensitivity: -51 dBV/Pa (2.8 mV)
