Medium-diaphragm cardioid condenser microphone
Our take on the AKG P120 by Crutchfield's Ralph Graves
The AKG P120 is a handy mic to keep around your home studio for all sorts of recordings. Its 2/3” diaphragm delivers clear, accurate sound, whether you're capturing vocals, an acoustic guitar, or even louder instruments. A switchable bass-cut filter minimizes rumble and low-end noise. The P120 can handle sound pressure levels up to 150 dB, letting you close-mike high-energy sound sources like drums or amps. Plus, the durable all-metal body means you can count on years of reliable use.

Overview: The AKG P120 is a rugged, durable, general purpose condenser microphone designed for studio, broadcast, and live applications. The all-metal body helps to reject RF interference, so it can be used near wireless mics, transmitter stations, and other communications equipment. A sturdy front grill helps protect the microphone from damage due to tough stage handling. Other key features include resistance to humidity and high temperatures, and the ability to handle high sound pressure levels, up to 150dB, without introducing perceptible distortion.
Polar Pattern: The P120 has a cardioid polar pattern, which has maximum sound pickup directly in front of it (facing logo), slightly less pickup from the sides, and almost no pickup from the rear of the mic.
Bass Cut Filter: Included on the microphone is a bass-cut filter switch that applies a high-pass filter at 300Hz with a 6dB/octave slope. This helps minimize the proximity effect, from close-in miking, as well as low-end distortion from wind, heating/cooling equipment, and other external sources.
Switchable Attenuation Pad: The P120 includes a -20dB Attenuation switch that increases the maximum sound pressure handling from 130dB to 150dB. This is ideal for close-in recording of very loud instruments such as brass and drums.
Connection: The mic provides a balanced output on a 3-pin male XLR connector.
Phantom Power: Since the P120 is a condenser microphone, it requires 48V phantom power.
